Tools of the Trade by Michael Coyle The tandem of Iconfactory and Panic has released a major update to CandyBar. In case you're a recent "Switcher", let me tell you that this utility is the best way to change System icons under MacOS X. This latest release allows to easily create and import System icon sets called Containers. 10 Minute Review: RBrowserLite Most of us use a free web browser. Previous polls have shown we also prefer free email clients. Now that MacOS X ships with a terminal application, the one major net program that Apple needs to create is an FTP client. (Just as under Linux, I have been hoping for a long time that Apple would support ftp from within the Finder windows). Transmit 2, Fetch, and Interarchy are all great ftp clients, but if you're on a budget you really need to take a look at RBrowserLite. It provides drag-and-drop ftp with the comfortable Finder styled window. Bookmarks are supported and the Key Chain remembers all your passwords. Navigation arrows allow you to move through the server hierarchy of directories, and you can view folders as either icons, lists, or the NeXT style browser. Need secure ftp and more features in your ftp client? There are two shareware versions of RBrowser. Pick the version that's right for you. Pros: Low cost (free). Intuitive MacOS X interface. Several directory list formats from which to choose (including reveal triangles). Cons: When uploading, can't turn off 'overwrite' warning. Folder bookmark icons can't be resized. FTP progress window a little cluttered. Update: Regarding built in ftp in the Finder, Thomas Lenggenhager sent the following info, "FTP is built into Jaguar, it is just not so obvious. From the Finder try 'Connect to Server' and type ftp://ftp@ftp.apple.com/ or ftp://anonymous@ftp.apple.com/" Whoa Tom, you are so right! How the heck did I miss that? I know I have tried the ftp protocol in the Connect window in previous versions of MacOS X, and I thought I had tried in Jaguar, but obviously I had not. There is one big problem with ftp under the Finder. Even with a proper user name and password, the remote server is read only. That would make it a little difficult to update ResEx! Read more about this limitation from Apple's Knowledge Base. Eight new sites have been added to the ResExcellence Links page. Go get them! Looking to skin your Moz? There are three new Themes available for Mozilla. My favorite out of this bunch is Blue. Click your favorite preview below to get more information.

- Dotmac Desktop is based on the ultra trick photoshop template of Apples's iDisk icon, painstakingly created by Lorne Kwechansky. Here's what he has to say about the project: "I loved this icon from the second I saw it, I wanted to have a full image of it for myself so I went to www.apple.com and saw the home page which has a decent picture of it, I took a screen shot, blew it up to 800 x 800 and started my work, I left everything intact for you, from pen paths to the original screen shot that I worked from. I also included a text layer talking about some strategies I used when making this image for you to see, anyway, I hope you enjoy looking at it as much as I do" This adaptation of the original image made by yours truly, comes in 1024x resolution.

Today's News by Cletus Rene from Happicon has made some graphic files to fix part of the GUI in the recently released iPhoto and iMovie Apple has just released. About iPhoto he writes: "Apple goofed up a bit with the 'Info' button in iPhoto 2, which is in a completely different style (old iTunes style actually) then the ones right next to it. Below are before and after images of what iFix © will do. Concerning In iPhoto and iMovie, the window has a light shadow on the left side and a dark shadow on the right side. iChat, Address Book, iCal etc have the light source from above. iPhoto-/iMovie-Fix will bring the look of the iPhoto/iMovie window in line with the others. If you want to reduce the items in your Dock, you can create DockExtender Menus that fit right into the dock. DockExtender eliminates the clutter that happens in the Dock. Check out the newest version which has a ton of fixes and enhancements. On the other hand, if you wish to not have certain applications appear in the Dock at all you may want to give Dockless a whirl. It is a simple utility for making applications show themselves (or not) in the Dock. Still in the early stages of development, Dockless works for most applications, but not for all. Keep track of internet time using iBeatTime. Besides cleaning up the interface, version 1.6.4 provides the following: - You can now enter number in the converter without having to write the ':'. For example: 1015 or 0305, notice the preceding zero. This is required!
- The favorites table now looks like the one in iTunes
- Clicking on the "Clear" button will bring up an "Are you sure" dialog
Rocket Launcher places application icons in your menu bar and further allows you to use it as a launcher. Changes to this popular program include: - Preview Browser in Preferences.
- User can easily set the menu bar Icon.
- Increased Stability.
- New Aqua Icon.
Add a couple of Contextual Menus from Move Items X 1.0.3 and you can have several nice functions added to Mac OS X. For instance: "Users can copy files or folders from the desktop or any folders to a specific destination by using the contextual menu features. Destinations folders will appear as hierarchical menus, i.e. entire hard disks will be listed on the menus, and users can browse to any levels of the hard disks." The February issue is out for the e-zine About This Particular Macintosh. Topics in this issue include: "The Candy Apple: Valentines Day Observations, Roll Your Own: The Object of Programming, Whats Under the Hood: Eye Candy for the Mac, and How To: Personalizing Your Mac 101, to name just a few of the terrific articles. Stop by their site and grab your choice of a PDF or HTML formatted, downloadable e-zine. Have a Press Release? Software or General News? Submit it here: Suggestions!
Polling Place by Michael Coyle At ResExcellence, we're so cosmopolitan! 60% of us have our passports. What a jet-set group of geeks! I could not find detailed statistics on the percentage of the population with Passports, but the State Department says seven million people each year request passports. Since there are 280 million people in the US, it seems save to say that more ResExcellence readers have their passports than in the general population. More proof of just how cool we are! :-) If you have a Macintosh computer running MacOS 9, you can't use Apple's newest 20" LCD monitor. Frankly, that's a lot of BS. Macintosh users use to feel shutout from monitor offerings built by PC manufacturers due to connector compatibility. It's ironic that Mac users are now shutout from monitors from Apple! Ever since the crude coffin scene proclaiming the "Death of MacOS 9", Apple has aggressively put up road blocks to stop their customers from using MacOS 9. They altered Open Firmware to prevent the booting of MacOS 9, stopped installing MacOS 9 disk drivers by default, and crippled hardware (monitors) under MacOS 9. I know MacOS X has been available for a few years, but let's be honest - it wasn't usable until 10.2! What do you think? This week's Polling Place asks, "Should new Macs boot OS 9?"
