Tools of the Trade Tools of the Trade. by Michael CoyleAfter reading the comments of ResEx readers, I purchased a non-Apple wireless base station. The SMC2655W suited my needs and saved the most money. This unit was only $159 at CompUSA, but it's really a barebones box. There is only one ethernet port so a hub is needed if you are connecting additional wired computers to your network. Apple's Airport software would not configure the unit, even though I think it should have. Does anyone know if Apple refuses to configure other brands of wireless access points for purely political and not technical reasons? To configure the unit, I booted Virtual PC and downloaded the software from SMC's web site (they provide it on a floppy. Duh!). The Windows software was almost identical to Apple's Airport software, so configuration was a snap. If this step bothers you, some wireless access points can be configured via any web browser, but be prepared to pay more. When finished in VPC, the unit performed perfectly. The wireless works great under MacOS 9 and X, now I just need to set it up under Linux. Any one know of a good HOW-TO? The money I saved was used to purchase an extra Lucent wireless PCMCIA card for an older WallStreet Powerbook. Fianlly, I can put away my 50 foot ethernet cable! Jonah Greene found something cool in the Mac OS X client of AOL's Instant Messenger. If you use buddy icons and the person your chatting with has one selected, when you minimize the IM window into the dock, their user icon appears instead of a window! He thought that was really cool, and then he noticed that when they send you the next message, a little IM cloud pops up telling you they are the one that IM'd! Intel Linux users have been using it for awhile, and thanks to the efforts of Kevin Hendricks and others, OpenOffice is now available for PPC/Linux. First you'll need to install java, and then OpenOffice. This package has a great set of Microsoft Word translators.

Today's News by Cletus Rest assured I am getting all of your entries for the WindowShade X contest. Despite the @Home snafu affecting some, I was given a new e-mail account through my cable company to have the emails from my Mac.com account forwarded to. In no time at all the entries started funneling in and now total around 400 plus submission. Terrific! We still have the rest of the week to go too. If you haven't entered yet, please do so. Tiger Technologies has updated the popular Holiday Lights to version 5.2. It provides rows of festive light bulbs around screen edges. Designed for System 7.0 or higher. This updates adds an "Old Glory" US flag bulb. Now this is cool. Really cool and I like it a lot! Can you tell? It is called: MenuCalendar. I always used the Calendar CSM in Classic. Just for real quick reference. I use Entourage for my PIM. But for quick reference, I love the Calendar CSM. I missed it tremendously when I switched to using Mac OS X exclusively on the iBook. When I noticed the MenuCalendar program I downloaded and installed it immediately. I then set about having it open at start up to make sure it is always running. For me it is the perfect replacement for the missing CSM. It slides down from the menu bar, slides back up when done and does not tie up further Dock space. piDock 1.4.2 is the newest version of this hierarchical file navigation and launcher. Designed for Mac OS 8.6 or higher with CarbonLib and Mac OS X 10.1 or higher. Changes in this version include: - Optimized Control-Option-Click activation (still not perfect, but better)
- Menu now closes when an item is selected to be launched
- Registration bug fixed where app would not become registered until relaunched
Snard .8 by Gideon Softworks is now available. It is described as a launcher that can be used as a system menu or a dockling. Snard reduces dock and screen clutter by replacing numerous items with a convenient system menu or dockling depending on the users preference. Changes to this release include: - Configuration Application no longer shows a dock icon
- Preference Menu groups items like in the actual System Preferences application
- Personal Preferences are now shown in the menu ( ie Tinkertool etc... )
- Open App as Administrator now works again
- Preference Menu Application Included : Snards preference menu as a system menu.
- Root level application items show Recent Items in a submenu - this can be turned on in Snard Config->Preferences
- Note : The recent items functionality is a concept. There are a few bugs that I know about. This release is just to gauge the amount of interest in this feature. Send me some feedback.
Time-X 1.7 is a skinnable digital alarm clock that works in the dock., More dock menus are included with this release. Eliminated a transparency bug with some skins. Good friend Len Ford dropped me a note about "a very good review of Canvas 8 for Mac OS X." It also happened to be a beta project he was involved with. Perhaps the article is of interest to some of you. Thanks Len! Have a Press Release? Software or General News? Submit it here: Suggestions!
Tools of the Trade Tools of the Trade. by Michael CoyleYou want cool? I'll give ya cool. Sanity Software released Visage, a System Control Panel Pane that allows you to change many aspects of MacOS X without logging in as Root or moving files with terminal commands. Andree Hollander was wondering, "I would like to know how to change the text that is displayed in the Finder when you open a font. Now the text is "Cozy lummox give smart squid who asks for job pen". The text is stored in the Finder's STR# resource under ID number 5816. Open the Finder in ResEdit to change it. Remember Andree, don't type any naughty phrases in there! :) Thanks to a tip from Eric Guerin, here's a simple three-drag way to convert MacOS X fonts for use under Classic MacOS 9. You'll need QuickConvert and Creator Changer. Fonts under MacOS X are stored in /System/Library/Fonts and /Library/Fonts.

Well, Unsanity has come up with what they call "haxies" which are additions or hacks for Mac OS X. Combine the name hack with "X" and you get Haxie! One of their haxies is called WindowShade X. WindowShade X is a haxie that brings WindowShade functionality into MacOS X. When you double-click a window title or try to minimize a window, it will perform an action which is different from the default MacOS X. Check the WindowShade X contest page for more details. Changes include the ability to copy icon to clipboard by using Edit menus "Copy To Clipboard" command and repairs to fix some interface bugs. GideonSoft Works has released version 0.9.1 of Get Info. Below is a full description and the logic for such a program: Kill Dock will let you see the process id of the program which runs the Dock for OS X. Sometimes the Dock will get messed-up, specifically, I have had a problem with programs crashing and the Dock not recognizing it. Kill Dock will terminate the process, allowing OS X to restart it. This has, so far, fixed all the problems I have had. Diablotin is a new Preference pane which allows you to see the Startup Items which have been added to Mac OS X in the /Library/StartupItems folder. If you're an user with administrative privileges, you can enable/disable these items. While I still have internet connection, things are still up in the air. Please be sure to use my iCletus@mac.com address for any email. Thanks. Have a Press Release? Software or General News? Submit it here: Suggestions!
Polling Place Polling Place. by Michael CoyleOuch. Over a third of ResEx readers still refer to Apple's newest OS by the wrong name. Not that I blame them. In my head I say the letter 'X', but in conversation, I manage to say 'ten'. Go figure. The comments on this poll were interesting as readers tried to guess how far Apple will carry the Roman numerals. Anyone interested in an early beta of MacOS MCIIIV? I believe it was with the release of MacOS 8.5 that the MacOS had the option of performing a mount check after the computer was shutdown improperly. This has greatly increased the reliability of file systems on the Mac. So much so that I wonder if many users bother to buy Tech Tool, Norton Utilities, or some other third party diagnostic tool. This week's Polling Place asks, "Do you use a third party disk tool?"
Tools of the Trade Tools of the Trade. by Michael CoyleHe contributed a bunch of MOSS, ATM, and even a Desktop picture! Stop by to get the latest info on a new theme switching tool called Duality which will also coincide with the release of the much anticipated Glass 2.0 for MacOS X 10.1. In the ResEx Theme archive are four of Mike's iCloud series of Classic themes: Tangerine, Ruby, Sage, and Strawberry. X Themination, the group that is working hard to create a Theme Editor for MacOS X, has opened a forum section to discuss all things related to theme creation. If any of you Scheme creates are looking to transition to MacOS X, give them a read. ResEx editors Cletus, Erick, and Dan have all been affected by the @Home bankruptcy. Judging from the server stats from Sunday, thousands of people have had internet disruptions. Did your subsequent ISP give you a user name that looks like an email address? For example, user name = user@isp.com. Netscape 4.7 cannot check email for accounts that contain an 'at sign' @. At least not until you perform this simple mod by Jonathan Scott! In the System Folder->Preferences-->Netscape Users-->UserName->Preferences you need to add the following line: user_pref("mail.allow_at_sign_in_user_name", true); And change the following line to add your user name with the @ symbol: user_pref("mail.smtp_name", "user@isp.com"); The trickiest part is actually opening the darn Preference file. You can use ResEdit to change the File Type from 'pref' to 'TEXT' and open in a decent text editor like Tex-Edit. Then after performing the modification, switch the code back to 'pref'.
