Today's News by Cletus Wow! I can not believe we are heading into December already. As we head into the weekend let's look at what updates have been released. Another thing I may face this weekend is the loss of my ISP depending on the outcome of this @Home situation. DropIcon 3.0.2 will generate thumbnail preview icons for image files instead of the normal generic or program icons. This release fixes a number of bugs and adds a few new features. A full listing of all changes is available here. HotApp 1.0RC4 will allow you to assign hot keys to any Mac OS X app, file, or URL. Several changes are involved with this work in progress. Test it out and send in your reports. - HotApp does not crash anymore while adding an application more then once
- HotApp's main window no longer disappears while using it
- HotApp's feature to "hide other application" while activating another item is now faster
- A new Software Developer Kit is available as a separate download
SoraTile 2.0 PR2b is an application switcher with drag and drop file opening. It also hides other applications. Several screen shots can be found here. This release includes the following: Fixed "Command Key + Click" action and added "Show In Finder" menu. CharView 1.1 shows all printing characters of a selected font in systems 8.0 through Mac OS X.. This update includes the following. - Interface font size customization
- Interface cleaning
- Scrap code rewritten
Virex Definitions for December have been released. The definitions come as a DAT file for versions 5.9.x and 6.x Have a Press Release? Software or General News? Submit it here: Suggestions!
Tools of the Trade Tools of the Trade. by Michael Coyle Doh! Talk about leaving the barn door open. Remember those 10.1 update CDs that Apple was giving away at all Apple and CompUSA stores? It seems that with a simple modification it could be turned into a full MacOS X installer. MaxFixIt posted the modification and was slapped with a letter from Apple's law firm. MacFixIt has pulled the info, you can read more of the debate at Slashdot. Apple's handling of this matter was just plain dumb. Here's why: - The only people who bothered to get the 10.1 updater were those who already had a full installer of MacOS X.
- Stopping the publication of the mod to keep the installer from being used as a full installer will not stop piracy because a person possessing the updater already has the full installer (see above). For example, I wanted to let a friend pirate MacOS X, wouldn't I just give him both CDs: the full installer and the update?
All Apple's law firm accomplished was to publicly insult one of the most respected Macintosh web sites and prove that along with the iTunes 2 debacle, Apple engineers need to read the manual on "Installer Creation". Because of this, Apple is the first recipient of the ResExcellence "Egg on Their Face Award". Congratulations. Thanks to the efforts of Benjamin Herrenschmidt, PPC/Linux is running on my Titanium Powerbook. The display is in 32 bit color, but still not accellerated X. According to Ben: My current rsync has working radeonfb on this machine. X 4.1 works with the plain unaccelrated fbdev driver. For an accelerated X, you'll need a version built from a recent XFree CVS HEAD (4.1.99). I'm using that now, it works correcty. YDL will soon release a kernel update for 2.1 that will include, among other things, that new radeonfb support. I haven't gotten around to updating XFree 4.1 because I, um, can't figure out the instuctions. I'm working on it. :) Have you never built a kernel before? Here is the two minute drill: ln -s /usr/src/benh_kernel /usr/src/linux cd /usr/include/ mv scsi/ scsi.old/ rm -f asm linux ln -s /usr/src/linux/include/asm-ppc/ asm ln -s /usr/src/linux/include/linux/ linux ln -s /usr/src/linux/include/scsi/ scsi cd /usr/src/linux/ make mrproper make menuconfig make dep make clean make vmlinux make modules make modules_install That's not too bad is it? More detailed instructions are here. On Wednesday, I was talking about hard kernel crashes with MacOS X 10.1.1. Bj Rampton has something to add. Once he mentioned it, I realized that I too was logging into a remote computer: I found the 10.1.1 problem it has to do with the mounted servers that I mount at startup. For some reason it doesn't like them very much, and is crash prone. I had login problems last night and all day yesterday before I sat down and figured it out. I've had to remove my servers to mount at startup in order to login normally. This worked great with 10.1, but 10.1.1 has something against it.

Complete Cable Management For The Home & Office.
Today's News by Cletus The results are in for the textSOAP giveaway. I have listed the five lucky winners below with their recommendation for a new feature. Once again we wish to thank all those that entered. Congratulations to the winners. I have shortened the suggestions. - William M. Leahy: Add a QuickKey type command that enables click-drag-highlighted text conversion to a pre-selected format. Ex.: Bold, Italic, 14, Red, Underlined.
- Brian Moore: Separation of signatures and bodies in e-mail. Cleaning of headers from-mail (w/ emails that have been forwarded one too many times and show the entire history of the email, like with chain emails)
- John Corey Miller: textSOAP should have a macro ability. For example a person has to work with e-mail from a certain program a lot, and to get text from this program to look correct they have to remove this one character then remove the extra line breaks. It would be so much easier to make a macro for this and just copy in the text and activate one command to do it.
- Bobby Thompson: My suggestion is to create a control strip module that will allow execution of some features on a text file directly.
- Andrew Craft: I would like to see a PERL filter under MacOS X.
WorkStrip 1.5.1 is a file management Control Strip-like launcher for system 8.6 or higher. "Many preferences have been added to the WorkStrip Control Panel to allow better control of WorkStrip's features, where previously a specific key combination had to be remembered/discovered. Most significantly, it is now possible to have item previews always enabled when using WorkStrip menus. Many other improvements and additions have also been added." iView MediaPro 1.3.1 is now available. It runs on both Classic and Mac OS X systems. It will allow quick viewing of all types of media in a simple and intuitive layout. Of note in this release is support for Canon CRW files. Media view displays 1440 by 960 preview version only until Canon releases conversion libraries. Drop Drawers X and DropDrawers for Classic have been updated to version 1.5.8. I think you all know how much I like this program. It provides floating drawers that store text, URLs, pictures, and just about everything else you can imagine. Changes to the both versions include the following: Fixes all known outstanding issues with Mac OS X 10.1, including recognizing all package files correctly and no longer emptying out the login list on some systems. Both versions of Drop Drawers 1.5.8 include several other minor fixes and improvements. Trash X is an application that will put the Trash can back on the Mac OS X desktop. Trash X is a handy tool designed to emulate the classic Mac OS Trash can under Mac OS X. The application also features numerous useful functions for the power user. Super Get Info goes to version 1.0.5. It is a replacement for the Show Info command in Mac OS X. New to this version is: - Finder keyboard shortcut. Select the items you want to open in Super Get Info, and just press Shift-Command-I. (Keystroke now configurable in version 1.0.5.)
- Dock menu. Click on the Super Get Info icon in the Dock and choose Open Finder Selection
- BBEdit 6.5 integration. The new status bar button makes it easy to invoke Super Get Info from within BBEdit 6.5
- DragThing integration. Now integrated with the premier Mac OS application launcher. Use Super Get Info to display info about the item(s) you select on any DragThing dock
- Command-line interface. The 'sgi' command-line tool makes it simple to open files and folders in Super Get Info from the Mac OS X Terminal. For example, just type sgi *.html to tell Super Get Info to open all the .html files in the current directory
SNAX has also been updated to 1.1.7. SNAX is a Finder replacement for OS X. A full list of changes and enhancements follows: - Allows customization for text editor application and get info panel
- Added support for Mac OS X Services
- Added a scrollbar in the text preview drawer
- Animated gifs now animate in preview drawer
- Fixed desktop window from hiding menubar shadow
- Added drw_rw_rw_ style permissions display in Get info panel
- Changing owner, group and permissions now will ask for root password if you don't own the file
- Numerous minor enhancements

Today's News by Cletus Another great contest comes to a close. Thanks goes out to all who entered from unmarked software and ResExcellence. I should be announcing the winners of the textSOAP contest on Wednesday. While we are talking about textSOAP, I want to mention the newest update. textSOAP 3.1.2 provides several fixes to last weeks version. All users should update to this version. - Fixed problem where OS X Services would crash in 3.1.1
- Fixed problem where some cleaners crashed under OS 9
- Fixed problem where unregistered app could crash when quitting
- Added Preference to free cmd-H keystroke for Hide Application (under OS X)
- Added new menu items to send email, visit unmarked web site
The Kaleidoscope Scheme Archive snuck in an update over the holiday. They added two new and one updated scheme. FT-8 by Daisuke Yamashita and Low Vision Platinum by Joe Stenger Icon Machine 3.0b11 is now available and will allow you to create and edit custom icons. Runs from system 8.6 to Mac OS X. - New application icon
- Internal changes to ensure stability
- Standard sheet dialogs in OS X
- Fully bundled with built-in help files and Japanese localization
- Improved contextual menu support
- Fixed some window activation issues, restoring the ability to drag from inactive windows
- Many other little things
iTunes Tool 1.3 provides a floating tool bar with playback controls for iTunes 2. Works under both Classic and Mac OS X. Only requirement is that you have iTunes 2.X. - Fixed a problem with vertical oriented tool bars not updating correctly
- Added option to shrink the tool bar when not in use.
- Known issue: iTTool does not idle at 0% in Mac OS X. This is because it doesn't use carbon events, and will not be corrected in the near future.
Memory Monitor 1.1 will display a graph of memory usage in the Dock. Changes include: Optional floating window with the memory usage graph . Paging rate is now displayed in pages per second, regardless of the update frequency. David Lloyd dropped ResExcellence a note about a new piece of software he developed for Mac OS 7.5 through Mac OS X. It is called Image Info. He writes: "Image Info is targeted at both scripters and non-scripters who wish to retrieve information about images without opening the whole image into memory. Because it does not need to open entire images, it returns the info very quickly." Thanks to the many who wrote in with suggestions about the icons jumping around on the desktop after updating to 10.1.1. (Previous image) Although the suggestions provided "workarounds", the remedies are not sufficient enough for me to change my opinion. The one constant suggestion was to turn off "Snap to grid" and the other was to trash the .DS Store. I did not feel comfortable trashing .DS Store, since I have read to many conflicting reports on this in various forums. Turning off "Snap to grid" does in fact work to a point. The icons continue to jump if the name of a folder or volume would bring it under the Dock. Hopefully Apple will make this "feature" an option in a future release. Have a Press Release? Software or General News? Submit it here: Suggestions!
Polling Place. by Michael Coyle
The usual number tossed about is 90%. If you're a webmaster considering charging a subscription fee, expect to loose 90% of your readers. So the difficult question is: can you charge the remaining 10% enough to make money? More and more sites will be facing that difficult decision, but not ResExcellence. I'd shut the damn thing down first. Plus much of the content at this site is contributed by readers, it would be ridiculous to then charge those same readers a fee to see their work!
Fortunately, ResExcellence is doing well generating income with the help of our sponsors, but please remember that without the support of companies like REAL Software (makers of REALbasic), Small Dog Electronics, PowerMax, and RAMJet, we would cease to exist. So please purchase form these fine companies at every opportunity. They support many quality Macintosh sites, not only ResExcellence.
If you are a long time Mac owner, you may remember the ridiculous System versions that were prevalent for a short time. There was System 7.5, 7.5.2, and 7.5.3. To go from one update to the next required standing on your head while juggling balls with your feet.
I'm afraid that with MacOS X, history will be repeated. Seriously, what the heck do you call this: MacOS X 10.1.1? Shouldn't it be MacOS X.I.I?
We have been living with MacOS X for quite a long time, and still its name is mangled in the press. This week's Polling Place once again asks, "MacOS X. Do you say X or 10?"
Tools of the Trade. by Michael Coyle
If you use a Windows computer, you may have noticed that Internet Explorer will often display a custom icon alongside a bookmark or location bar URL. This is a feature called a "Favorites Icon". In order to see it, the webmaster places a Window's formatted icon file on the web server. If the icon, named favicon.ico, is present the browser will download and display it.
Two years ago I uploaded a favicon for ResExcellence, but have never seen it in a macintosh browser until I downloaded the MacOS X version of Mozilla .0.9.6. The feature is still not present in the Classic version. Surprisingly, ResExcellence is the only Mac site I stumbled upon to have the icon, though it is prevalent throughout other sites on the internet.
To see this feature in MacOS X and PPC/Linux, check the setting shown below in the browser preferences. The current MacOS Classic version does not have the feature, instead you need to snag one of the Nightly Builds.
Sosumi, the great looking MacOS X Theme file, has been updated. There is also a matching iTunes skin. Check them out and be sure to send any bug reports to Sinewave.
The LowEndMac Best of the Web survey results have been posted and ResExcellence was noted as the sixth most respected site. I believe that means we are worthy of meeting the parents, but marriage is out of the question.
Time flies. After three years of publication (and the 300th cartoon installment), pcweenies.com has done a complete site overhaul. The new site offers improved navigation, a weekly letters column, free downloadable desktop pictures, and a complete three year archive of previously published "PC Weenies" cartoons.
