A-Dock 2.6p3 is the newest release of this App switcher/launcher that is a bit like Mac OS X's dock. It's separated in 3 zones - your favorite applications you've added by drag and drop (left part) - the other applications running on your computer (middle part) - the trash (right part). Changes in this version include:

  • Fixed cosmetic problems.

  • Improved cancelling of a drag inside a spring-loaded folder (press the esc key).

  • Improved a bit the skin format for vertical docks.

File Freak 3.5.2 allows you to list, open or move all your files based on dynamic search criteria. Very fast and great for a large amount of programs. Designed for Mac OS 9.0 and Mac OS X 10.0 or higher.

  • Moving multiple items to the trash is much faster

  • Scroll wheel support

  • In Mac OS X launched items now show up in Recent Items menu

  • Now you can batch change Finder info such as type, creator, and invisibility

  • Command-A selects all items in the file list if the text box isn't active

  • Fixed a crash that could occur during indexing if "ignore items in trash" pref was selected

CocoaTech, Inc. has sent notice that SNAX 1.1.6 is ready for immediate download! Italian and Swedish localizations were added, plus many other improvements. SNAX is a file utility similar to the Mac OS Finder, but with many more features. It was written entirely in Cocoa, exclusively for Mac OS X.

ChangeDesktop 1.0 is designed for Mac OS X and higher. It of course allows you to change Desktop pictures at specified intervals. Some features include: Can choose a picture at random, or choose each picture in sequence. Coalesces pictures from multiple directories so you don't have to move all your pictures to one directory.

Infinity-to-the-Power-of-Infinity recently released a revision to the icon utility Can Combine Icons. "Can Combine Icons 1.2.0 features new and better icon generation, support for colorization and interface enhancements. It also includes a template for creating Aqua folders with icons of the correct perspective. Another highly anticipated feature is Drag and Drop support allowing users to automatically add icons by dropping them on the application icon."

Good Doug Software has posted version 1.0 of Xmas Lights. "This is a simple little program that puts holiday lights on your MacOS X desktop. Download and get into the spirit of the season." Attribution Desktopper.

There is an interesting topic going on in the forum dealing with FileSharing in Mac OS X. While it doesn't nearly discuss everything, it does cover some important topics. I know I figured a lot of this out by playing with filesharing on my own...for hours on end...and I could not call Mike because we only ever IM. :D In any case, it may be of interest to you.

Wow. Don't buy stock in your local telco! More than half of ResEx readers have cut back on phone usage in favor of IM chat. I asked people around the office and they concurred, especially if they had relatives overseas.

In the circles in which webmasters travel, the buzz is all about moving to a subscription method of payment. MacOS Rumors is offering advance email notification to readers who donate the suggested $25 via PayPal. For thirty bucks, The Salon gives you access to premium content for an entire year. Even Slashdot is considering a move to subscriptions. Is it the wave of the future? Will all web sites soon charge for access? This week's Polling Place asks, "Would you pay a subscription for web content?"

I can't wait to see the comments on this topic!

Tools of the Trade. by Michael Coyle

From the Forum, we have a recommendation from bert the muppet to checkout a cool MacOS X Dockling called X3.

It's an interesting spin on the idea of a CPU load indicator. The cube spins faster as load increases. The colors and transparency can be customized. I've been running it for a day, and it hasn't driven me mad yet! The real-thing looks much better than my squirrelly gif. (<--first use of 'squirrelly' on ResEx.)

Phoenix Design is not only a great place to get icons and desktops for your Mac, but webmaster Brian Ellis also has something to say about the design of the MacOS X Dock.app.

He has put together an interesting proposal for the next redesign of the Dock. This is worth a look just to see all the cool mockup images.

PPC/Linux kernel hacker Benjamin Herrenschmidt emailed to say why I couldn't get the proper bit depth set on my new TiPowerbook, "You probably need to wait for a better radeonfb in the kernel (we are working on it) and a patched XFree driver (at least until the proper fixes are in the main XFree CVS)."

Click for image in a new window
While I wait for those updates, I thought I would spend a little time installing Fink! It's a package installer for setting up an XFree windowing system in MacOS X/Darwin. After installing the Fink Package Manager, you use a terminal application to select and install dozens of packages, including the Gnome Desktop and Gimp.

You install Fink on your current MacOS X partition and the placement of its files will not interfere with the running of MacOS X. If you can afford half a gig of drive space, give it a test drive. Like Linux, it will give your brain a mental workout!

Replace the Fonts in iTunes by Pithawat Vachiramon

Pithawat Vachiramon has successfully modified iTunes 2 to use different fonts for its playlist, LCD and other items. This is extremely useful if you have MP3s in non-roman characters (i.e. Thai like Pithawat). The trick is to modify the "length" byte in front of the font name. (Continued...)

  • Ben Millett sent us his first iTunes skin, and it's a beauty! The green color will great on a Holiday desktop, then pull it out again for St. Partick's Day!

  • As a kid, we would all fight for the tin Race Car icon in the game of Monopoly. This new Boot Panel by Ed Dyer features a roadster that brought back memories.

  • With Rick Roe's permission, Oscar Marsh created a nice AIM splash using one of Rick's icons.

  • A pair of brushed titanium splashes, one for Explorer and the second for Outlook Express were left without a READ ME in the ResEx Drop Box. If they are yours, drop me a line!

James Thomson has posted a little blurb on his page concerning two items that have popped up with DragThing. In particular, the subjects concerned are: "DragThing not running properly at login under Mac OS X 10.1. And, "What do the little anchors mean when I drag windows around?" If you have a desire to know the answers to these FAQ's, head over to this page.

A great little program for cleaning up "internet" text has been updated, textSOAP. textSOAP, by umarked software has gone to version 3.1. DropIcon 3.0.1 will generate thumbnail preview icons for image files instead of generic or program associated icons.. "DropIcon works on a wide variety of image formats, is packed with additional features, and is the perfect addition to anyone’s desktop." Works with Mac OS 8.1 through Mac OS X.

Angelo Scicolone has released ClipWorks 2.0, a new version of the application that allows you to edit the contents of the clipboard before pasting. This version includes print support, ability to discard changes and other minor changes.

It does require Mac OS X 10.0 or higher and an OpenGL accelerated graphics card. The second is Planets Screen Saver1.0 which is a Screen saver module. I have not looked at either.

Toren Valimir has dropped me a note about a brand new Kaleidoscope Scheme he is working on. The new scheme is called Infinite Obsession. He also sent me a little teaser shot and asked me to let all ResExcellence readers have a peek. REALbasic Image Table by Erick Tejkowski

Q: When is an image not an image?

The new TiPowerbook has arrived! Beyond the obvious comments on speed and beauty, here are some other interesting tidbits. The first thing I do with my new Books is to repartition the hard disk in preparation of PPC/Linux. While Apple has always provided install and restore CD's, this new double set was impressive.

After reformating, it recreated the boot partition - installing both MacOS 9 and MacOS X. The whole reformat/reinstall took 40 minutes.

One advantage to the 'Unix' way of thinking is the User Folder. Instead of hunting through the Preferences folder on my old Powerbook deciding what to copy, the Users folder of MacOS X simply copies over and preserves all my preference settings. (Under Linux, the same is accomplished with the /home directory.)

Yellow Dog Linux 2.0 wouldn't install. It was necessary to download the new 2.1 ISO disk image. Surprisingly, burning the disk image stumped me for several hours. Toast 5 would mount and burn the image, but it would not boot. After chatting with #ppclinux I was told you need to burn the ISO image without mounting it. To do this, you need a little known option in Toast 5: the popup "Other" menu pictured below. Mine had defaulted to VideoCD when it needed to be on "Disk Image". One set correctly, drag the iso-disk image into Toast and burn without mounting.

YDL 2.1 installed wonderfully in 20 minutes with a new triple-boot script that allows you to choose MacOS 9, MacOS X, or Linux at boot time. The only remaining problem I have is the XFree config. I just can't seem to get anything other than UGLY eight bit color. Comments appreciated. :)

Thanks to all the readers who recommended alternatives to Apple's Airport Base Station. As soon as the piggy-bank gets a little fatter, I'll pick one up.

I'm very excited. My screaming fast TiPowerbook finally arrives today. I had already ordered one several weeks ago when the 667Mhz version was released, but someone saw it on the back of a FedEx truck and thought it would look better on their desk!

Since this new Book comes with an Airport card, it would be great to buy a base station, but at $299, Apple (as usual) is asking too much.

Have any readers had success with other 802.11b base stations? For example, NetGear makes one for only $139. That would allow me to buy another Airport card for my old Powerbook. I understand the software is Windows only, but I have VirtualPC. I've started a forum thread if you have a comment.

Desktoper.net wrote to say the MacOS X theme Xenogenesis v1.1.0 has been updated.

Are you looking for a faster way to index your hard drive? Jeremy Hoesly suggests using the little known Labels feature. Launch Shelock and under Preferences you can select a single label color for indexing. Then select your files (the Documents folder for example) and enjoy a fast index.

MySQL and PHP Installation Tutorial by Christopher Sample

Like many of you, I jumped right into 10.0.x hoping to join the ranks of the elite Unix and Linux users, developers and overall ‘extreme geeks’. One of the first things I wanted to do with 10.0.x was to install PHP and MySQL, as well as get Samba up and running (but that’s another tutorial!). I quickly sparked up the internet and began perusing the many sites and posts related to the installation of these magical beasts, only to find that no one agreed completely on the installation. Paul Sahner sent in the winners of the "I Love New York" contest. They are listed below. DV Graphics and ResExcellence would like to thank all those that participated. Congratulations to the winners. Be sure to stop by DV Graphics for some great desktops, icons and other resources. Oh yeah, for those who suggested I was the original designer, you were wrong. Susan Kare was the original designer and only consulted me. Although they did use an imprint of my left hand for the hand icon. :)

  • Lon Hutchison
  • Matthew Hogan
  • John Stack
  • Lambert Dickmeis

Diane Jennings left me know about a new CSM from Mikawares called: Appearance CSM version 1.0. It provides Control strip to access the Appearance control panel. "This is for those who often change desktop picture or play with the Appearance options. It's been built under OS 9.2.1."

Folder Icon X 1.0.3 is the newest release of this utility for making customized folder icons in OS X. "It fully supports "drag 'n drop", live icon resize, and can load any icons from any files or folders. All generated icons are 32-bit Mac OS X-compatible icons which can be viewed on both Classic Mac OS and Mac OS X."

  • Allows to change transparency of the logo icon.

  • Allows to use "Delete" key to delete the selected logo icon.

  • Added offset and size editable box. To make changes of editable values, users must press "Return" or "Enter" key. See manual for full details.

  • Improved quality of saved icons. Transparent icons will not show the grayish tone.

Key Xing 1.1 lets you Launch applications and files from the keyboard in Mac OS X 10.1. Product description; "Launches almost any type of file or program with a key stroke. Runs in the background and uses very little memory or CPU time. Tracks files even after they're renamed or moved. Supports Unicode file names (up to 255 characters). Allows launch options like "hide after open", "hide others", and "open in background" changes to this version includes:

Polling Place. by Michael Coyle

Almost 40% of ResEx readers play music CDs primarily in their computers. A surprisingly high number. In an email, Jake Tenenbaum thought this high number my be due to the fact that ResExcellence has a young readership.

"Your results say that the majority of your readers listen on their computers. This suggests to me that perhaps, your website readers are disproportionately young. About 25% of the population is underage, but 40% of your readers listen to CD's somewhere other than the car."

In a survey taken last year, 49% of ResEx readers were between the ages of 19 and 30, so Jake is probably correct.

If you have been following my comments on copy protected CDs, you may have seen this list of protected CDs. Fat Chuck's Corrupt CD's also mentions on the possibility that the MacOS is immune to the copy protection. While this is good news, it almost certainly not stay this way. So if you want to keep your freedom to play CDs on your computer, read Chuck's suggestions.

Over the past year, the number of phone calls placed from my house has been slowly decreasing. This is surprising because my daughter is fifteen, and a decreasing phone bill defies the laws of physics when a teenager is in the house. Why?

Could it be that she is planning more of her activities via Instant Messaging? My sister and mother-in-law have AIM accounts and I seldom call them anymore, preferring to chat online instead. If this is the case, what does it mean to local and long distance phone companies? This week's Polling Place asks, "Do you dial less because you IM more?"

It ain't easy, but if you really want to use a custom login panel in MacOS X 10.1, then read this forum tread by Techo_Geek. Basically, he reworks the size of the Apple icon in the Login window so that it fills the entire box. Then you can replace the logo with your Login Panel.
