Today's News by Cletus Lemke Software has posted version 4.5 of their wonderful Graphic Converter program. It can import 96 different graphic-based formats, edit the image, and export it out of 38 file available file formats. This update requires you to send for a new registration code that is free to previous owners who purchased a registration after April 2002 and $15 for previous users to upgrade to version 4.5-5.x. Thanks to Mike Harris for pointing this out to me. Unsanity Software has update Dock Detox to version 1.1 making it a .ape to fall in line with their other products. Other changes provide better Mac OS X 10.2 "Jaguar" compatibility, and it now uses a new installer. Dock Detox prevents icons in the Dock from jumping up and down. This is sometimes very annoying I think. iconCompo receives a new update after the initial release. Below is a listing of changes: - A menu "View" is added which contains a new item "Customize Toolbar...".
- A menu item "Use Default Background" is added under the menu "File".
- "Attach custom icon..." is stabler and more effective.
- "Paste" menu item works properly.
Hopalong is a new screensaver to me. At least I never heard of before. Hopalong is a fractal screensaver. It generates real plane fractals as described in the September 1986 issue of Scientific American. piPop X has been updated for another beta release by piDog Software. This menu based utility helps to make your workflow smoother. If you use this utility, then download this beta and give it a good going over for the author. Angelo Scicolone has posted AliasMultiplier X 2.6 for download. It is possible to overlook how useful this program can be. I like it for setting up and working on projects. One click and you can have the folders needed, programs opened and off to work you go. If you do not know about this program, it is one that creates single aliases that can open more programs, documents, folders or web pages. - Optimized for Mac OS X 10.2.x "Jaguar", This includes many bug-fixes for Jaguar users, like correct icon display, working "Windows" menu.
- Improved overall stability thanks to REALbasic 4.5.2 runtime.
- Now bundled applications are not displayed as folders.
- The "Type" column now displays more detailed information about items.
- AliasMultiplier X remembers window positions for multi-alias windows.
- You can disable the "slurp" sound when you drop files on a multi-alias window.
@-time 3.0a1 is out and will display local time and several other locations simultaneously in the Dock. It has been completely rewritten in Cocoa. Here is another excellent tip from Dr. Mac - "What the little icon in the title bar is good for..." I didn't know this, did you? Have a Press Release? Software or General News? Tools of the Trade by Michael Coyle For Halloween, I helped my son make a costume of an escaped criminal. It's the old black stripes on a white sweatshirt and pants. We painted on the black stripes, which looked good, but it was missing the stenciled letters with the prisoner's ID number. A quick search of Google returned Simply The Best which has a ton of great stenciled fonts, among others. Two new Appearance Themes for MacOS X are going into the Archive today and I'm going to try something new. When posting a new theme I'll include a snapshot highlighting any included desktop pictures or icons. This should allow you to make the best judgement as to whether you want to try the theme. Mad Max Rudberg gives us his interpretation of Platinum on MacOS X with the release of Rhapsodized. Also included are two desktop pictures and Copland styled icons (both shown in the snap below). As usual, Max's theme is a comprehensive makeover with lots of little extras like a Boot Panel, Login Makeover, and Finder button resources. Our first theme by Woody Sabran is on display! Titled Plax, it has nice menus and window widgets, but it's still a little to Aqua for me. Woody suggests using Metalizer for more consistent look (which I admit I didn't do). The theme consists only of an Extras.rsrc file, but Duality did install it when I dragged the rsrc file into the Duality window. Give it a spin and send Woody some feedback and encouragement. It's nice to have another themer on board! | | | Rhapsodized | Plax | | Click preview for full size image in new window. | Looking for good Halloween laugh? Strong Bad, Homestar, and the rest of the gang have put together their annual Pumpkin Carving Contest flash animation. If you haven't visited the Homestar Runner site before, be sure to read all of Strong Bad's emails.

If you contribute a file to any section of ResExcellence, you could win a PowerMax gift certificate worth $50 ! (How?) - It's a testament to the influence Bungie that so many contributions feature the games the company has published. Jonathan Chapman sends a huge set of 24 boot images featuring logos and characters from many Bungie software titles. Jonathan was even nice enough to send me an animated GIF, saving me the trouble of making a preview image!
- Space Invader sends a new skin for iTunes 3! Titled Industrial, it's loaded with little bits of metal.
- You'd have to be an old grouch like me to remember watching the original broadcast of Get Smart. Todd Crider sent this colored boot image of Agent 86, Maxwell Smart.
- Following up on Tuesday's creation, Trc3 sends another anime Boot Panel. This time it's Faye Valentine.
- Carver Tangeman sends the Gonzo logo of the great Hunter S. Thompson as a boot image. He warns, "Use at your own risk and never attempt to emulate the behavior of said author. Many have tried, yet few have survived."
- The lovely Cameron Diaz is smiling in this boot image from Dumbo.

SoraTile is an application switcher with drag and drop file opening. It also allows you to hide other applications when switching. Path Finder, which I mentioned last time and was formerly named SNAX was quickly updated. Not sure what has changed in this update, but it must have been something..... Typeset is a really cool and easy to use full-featured font viewing utility for Mac OS X. It was designed for the creative professional. That would be a ResExcellence reader! The screensaver I mentioned the other day called Batz! has been updated. This version adds Desktop Mode. Bats no longer 'hang in mid-air', they rest at the top of the screen. Just like a bat is supposed to do. HourWorld Live Deskpicture X 2.0.2 is the very popular dynamic desktop image switcher. This update fixes a bug for 1440x900 displays on 17" iMacs. If you have such a beast and use this program, you wish has been answered. Update now! VirtualDesktop 2.0 Beta 8 by CodeTek has been posted. If you are interested in trying this out. The new feature in this release is an option on the Applications tab of the preferences to disable moving a window to the desktop of an applications top-most window when it is created. Thee are some known issues that are included in the read me file and many many bug fixes. Try it out and let them know any problems as they prep for the final release. Primate 1.5.1 fixes a nasty bug that would cause a crash at startup. Primate helps control your Unsanity Haxies. Direct download. I can not believe that it is snowing right now. To soon for my tastes. They claim we may have two inches by morning and some areas may get 6 inches. Eh-gads.... Have a Press Release? Software or General News? Submit it here: Suggestions!

I would never have believed that a large number of Windows users are working hard to making XP resemble MacOS X. Sones Homepage has posted some amazing snapshots that at first glance appear to be Macs. There is even a tutorial on hacking XP to display 128x128 icons. OSXP is another Windows site dedicated to emulating the MacOS X UI. With the permission of the original artists, this page has an archive of MacOS X icons that have been ported to Windows. While Mac users have used products like GoMac that adds a Windows-like Start menu, and we even have an XP Appearance theme, I'm not aware of any sites dedicated to bringing the look of XP to the Mac. Let me know if I'm wrong. The talented Takashi Izawa has updated Maggra and Makki for MacOS X 10.2. Maggra comes with two versions so you can choose your scrollbar style. He also updated AlumiteX which also ships with two versions. This time you can choose the style of the inactive window. Rene from Happicon has posted a set of 24 boot images made up from finest Happicons. The new set is cleverly titled HappiBoot©. :-) The October Cursor Update for Blobber contains two cuties by Joe Kohlmann. Thomas Blaschy tipped me off to RAD.E8. He comments, "Sascha is a screen designer who does absolutely stunning work. His latest creation is the SNOW.E 2 icon set, but his site has much more to offer, including desktops, Audion faces, more icons, and last but not least the site's design itself, a very soothing Flash creation."

Today's News by Cletus Since getting my new G4 desktop unit, I have been using the Apple mouse that came with it. Mostly because I have been happy with it. However, with the recent release of the Kensington MouseWorks 2.1b2 drivers, I decided to pull my relatively new Turbo 4 Button Mouse out of storage and try it again. There are still several features missing that I was use to and liked in the Classic version. However, it is now compatible with the 10.2 Jaguar release and functions nicely for me. If you have not tried the new Kensington drivers yet, I recommend doing so. I have been very happy over the last couple of days. It is nice to have the multiple button options back again. Rocket Launcher 0.9.1 is a new launcher program that operates from the menubar, and is in the early stages of development. It allows you to switch and launch applications from the menu bar. An Icon will appear in your menu bar, which opens to a menu displaying your apps and files. Select which application or file you want to launch and you are off and running. We have mentioned this program before and it has just been update. AquaFix 1.5.1 is a nice program for those of you who like to try out all the modifications we offer at ResExcellence. But if you mess something up, then AquaFix will return you to your default Aqua state. It runs from a GUI window, but does include a command line version in case you can't even boot into Mac OS X. John MacDonnell is letting everyone know that the completely rewritten version of DockFun! Version 3.5 preview is available for you to try out. DockFun! is a tool to run an infinite number of Mac OS X Dock configurations. Stop by his site and check out the new version. It is all Cocoa! The excellent program LaunchBar has been updated. Changes to this version include: - Dragging files from LaunchBar has been improved to work properly with Terminal.
- The Help pages are now opened in the "Default Web Browser"
- Hiding the bar at login should now work properly.
- The "Scan Subfolders" option couldn't be modified in the Inspector drawer.
- Fixed an occasional problem where the bar disappeared when autohiding was turned off.
- Fixed an issue causing LaunchBar to hang at startup.
Trash Icons (direct download) provides you with the Trash Icons from system 7, and by using CandyBar, allows you to change the Trash icons in Mac OS X. Process Wizard allows you to access all processes from menu bar and further tune their priority. this release brings full compatibility with Mac OS X Jaguar. Full details and screenshots are available on the homepage. Snatcher was updated over the weekend again. - Added printer destination.
- Added an option to set Mac Creator codes for snaps.
- Added an option to open screenshot immediately after snap.
- Added an option to delete screenshot after snap is open.
- Fixed PNG brightness bug.
One site I visit regularly is Zeldman.com, although I am not sure why. They do have interesting tidbits every once in a while. They also do all their work on Macs. Now they are completely redoing their site. Check out the new design. We do not deal in rumors at ResExcellence so I will make this quick... Rumor has it that an update to Jaguar will be coming this week. ;) I hope so. Not that I am having any particular troubles, but I am hoping it will include certain fixes for the most complained about bugs with Mail, AddressBook and iCal. Time will tell. I am developing my Christmas wish list. I thought I would post some ideas in case and of you wanted to get me a little something... I am interested in the Rolex Submariner in Steel. I also am interested in a new 22" Apple Display! Why not the 23" version? I have a phobia to odd numbers. I am also thinking about doing this. I think it is also important that I mention Fran's favorite new saying to me: "What world do you live in?" Mostly since I will laugh hysterically when I see the new Sprint telephone commercial about the guy bringing home a monkey with a cold! I also have no interest in BlueTooth. Have a Press Release? Today's News by Cletus A quick apology for the brevity of today's news. I have been just absolutely swamped the last couple of days and evenings negotiating to sell my parents house. Since the people are making a cash offer for it, it has accelerated the whole process, bypassing the normal bank delays. UGH! A Better Finder Rename X has been updated to the next beta stage. Using a CMM to do its work, you can batch rename multiple files. This forth beta release of the forthcoming 5.0 version provides some improvements to the sorting of file names over 32 characters and the registration assistant. It also fixes several minor problems introduced in the previous beta releases. The former SNAX file browser has been updated. The new name is Path Finder and the version number is 2.0.1. Path Finder is similar to the Finder, but it also puts a Aqua user interface on many powerful Unix tools for operating on files. Path Finder also has well designed user interface for viewing and navigating your hard disks. I'm going batty here, so this may be an appropriate screensaver. Batz! This is from the same group who did a cemetery screensaver. Very seasonal! Balin and his bat buddies fly around your screen hunting for food, while a full moon shines, and the gentle sound of crickets can be heard in the background. I noticed this tidbit on MacDailyNews as I buzzed around today. It is the animated "Halloween Dock App" from the now defunct StimpSoft. You can set the speed at which the pumpkin light "flickers" by adjusting the "Flicker Speed" slider in the preferences window. Ugly Dockling 1.0.1 brings back the Favorites menu found in Mac OS 9. "A simple contextual menu in the Finder adds applications, documents, folders and even drives to the Ugly Dockling menu. No need to go to the Preference Pane to add and organize your menu items." Mac OS X 10.1 or later. Have a Press Release? Software or General News? Submit it here: Suggestions!

- This minimalist, dual-monitor snapshot from Jeffrey Garczewski sports two custom desktop pictures in addition to custom folder icons. Wide open spaces are the order of the day.
- A custom desktop picture photographed in Tobermory, Ontario and Takashi Izawas DSX Theme are showcased in this contribution from Paul Hollingsworth. Audion, equipped with the Horse Dreams face, is cranking out music along the right edge.
- A desktop of unknown origin and Maury McCowns AquaX III Graphite K-Scheme debut in this submission from miK. A-Dock provides the dock lining the left edge.

Tools of the Trade by Michael Coyle In the past I have discussed configuring printers via IP, Appletalk, and over Airport. On newer portable computers that support Airport cards, accessing common printers on a wireless network is easy. Unfortunately, my son has my old Wallstreet Powerbook. The Lucent 802b card works after installing open source drivers, but printing to an Appletalk printer still would not work. Finally I have a solution. First I installed the following three packages: Installing the first two packages expands IP and postscript printing. The third package adds postscript drivers for HP Deskjet printers (I have an HP 960). While I was most interested in printing over a wireless network, these drivers also work great over wired networks and USB. After opening the Print Center on my son's Wallstreet Powerbook, I selected IP printing and the HP 960 driver. For the first time, printing now works great over a 802.11b wireless connection. Adding a Deskjet printer after installing HPIJS | Noticing that I often mention the cool images at The Astronomy Picture of the Day, Sky O'Mara recommends the NASA Earth Observatory Picture of the Day. They will have really nice satellite pictures of Earth, and sometimes (like on 10/23/02) they will have little quizzes about where on Earth a picture was taken. Most times they are very big and some make good desktops like the one of the Terkezi Oasis in Chad from a couple of days ago. Very nice! Be sure to bookmark this. A ResEx Reader improves on the recently mentioned modification to have multiple icon sizes on the desktop. This enables a "Icon Size" sub-menu in the view menu of the Finder. This hack has taken it a step further by providing a resource file to easily copy and paste into the Finder.app, and also customizing the menu so that the "Arrange by..." sub-menu is not converted into just an "Arrange by Name" menu item. The resources in "Icon Size Hack.rsrc" need to be copy and pasted into "/System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/Localized.rsrc". If you're planning on using ResEdit then you need to swap the data and resource forks for the Localized.rsrc file before editing. You can do this with QuickConvert. And remember always work on a copy, you should backup the original! I'm not sure how I missed this even though I use the software daily. ThinkFree Office has been updated to version 2.1. The new version fixes quite a few bugs. PC Weenies is proud to announce two significant milestones -- first, it's the 400th installment of the PC Weenies! Second, October 21st marks the 4th year anniversary of the cartoon! Please stop by and join the celebration!

- Last update, Jonathan Chapman send some Boot Images of the Angels and Giants - the two teams who are playing in the World Series. One team that is NOT playing is the New York Yankees. Like most Yankee fans, Jonathan is having trouble accepting the fact that his team is NOT still playing in October. He sent some nice Boot Images of Yankee logos. Come on Jon, get over it. The Yankees are done for the season! :-)
- In honor of the finest game ever made, James Badger sent a of seven Boot Panels featuring the computers of Marathon.
- Are you familiar with "Schlock", the main character of the popular online comic strip "Schlock Mercenary"? Jonathan Chapman sent an additional Boot Image of the cartoon character.
- As promised, here are the final six Sailor Moon boot panels from Ben Scripps.
- Who lives in a pineapple under the sea? Bannanaman sent a Boot Panel of Sponge Bob (Square pants!).
- Dumbo sent a boot image of the lovely Brit.
- I'm not sure what to make of this Boot Image. Todd Crider calls it Battery though I'm not sure if that's him in the picture or if it was lifted from a commercial. UPDATE: Ok, I'm a dork. Readers emailed to say the image is Morphius from The Matrix. And yes, I have seen The Matrix. :)
Today's News by Cletus Drop Drawers 1.6 will be released on Wednesday. I gave a little teaser about his the last time. Several guessed correctly. It has received several nice enhancements. A lot of work has also gone into optimizing Drop Drawers on Mac OS X, so there is smoother drawer animation, better hot key response, improved Aqua look. Some of the Mac OS X specific add-ins are: added option of using Quartz anti-aliased text throughout and the addition of a drawer transparency settings, allowing fading while sliding. There were also a lot of enhancements to the legacy version as well. Check the read me in the new version for a full list. Macaroni quickly receives an update fixing a "Run Job Now" failure in the program. They also fixed a problem where the Unix maintenance scripts are missing and therefore cannot be run. How does this happen? Some complained the history window was incomplete, so this has also been fixed to provide a full history. QuickAccessCM provides easy access to frequently used folders, documents and applications. It can be used as a launcher, file commander or installer. QuickAccessCM plugin provides the following independent modules: - "Quick Access" with items for quick opening.
- "Move To" with folders into which you often move things.
- "Copy To" with folders into which you often copy things.
Fritz has left me know about an update to Snatcher version 1.0a8. Snatcher is a free screenshot program designed to replace Grab. Yes, I said Free! Changes to this version include: - Added TGA and SGI file formats.
- Added contextual menu support.
- Added preferences.
- Fixed a bug when pulling up the JPEG settings dialogue.
- Fixed a bug where Snatcher would not save your prefs if you quit without closing the window.
Are you up for some testing? Keyboard Maestro 1.2.1a2 is available to try out. Keyboard Maestro is your hot key solution that allows you to perform a multitude of tasks simply by pressing a keystroke! Give this a run through and report back to the author with any information you can provide. Primate 1.3 has received some bug fixes and more support additions for other Haxies. Primate is a tool to help you manage your Unsanity Application Enhancers (.ape). I want to point out that this is not a program by Unsanity, but rather a program to work with Unsanity's Haxies. I know if I did not say that, someone would email me. ;) David Catmull has updated Icon Machine. A full listing of changes is available on the homepage. So it appears that a lot of you stopped by John Haney's site and downloaded Creature. Referring site logs do not lie! In any case, he notified me that within 24 hours a new version would be released. So that puts it right in the middle of Wednesday sometime. If you tried an earlier version, you will want to try the new one, right? Have a Press Release? Software or General News? Tools of the Trade by Michael Coyle It's a good thing that Kevin Husted doesn't require much food or drink to survive. Locked away in his room for the weekend, he emerged this morning with a box full of MacOS X themes. Today his Power 1.6 and Power 1.6 Ice Blue themes are final, and a new beta for you to try is available for download. Take a look at Cappuccino and email Kevin some feedback (Don't forget to thank him for all his hard work). The Astronomy Picture of the Day has posted a stellar image of the Andromeda Galaxy that is large enough to be a great desktop picture. Mozilla users can grab a couple of new skins. Hybrid-I is a nice looking grey theme, and Breeze is a very simple, almost minimalist theme. Breeze Mozilla Skin |

- Randee has contributed a huge collection of splash screens for a variety of applications. They remind me of Dan Flax's Aqua Fusion icon style. In addition to a MOSS, Explorer splash, and Eudora splash, Randee also sends splashes for the following: Quicktime Picture Viewer, Quicktime Player, Photoshop, Acrobat, Quark, and Illustrator.
- Go Giants! Jonathan Chapman sent a set of Boot Images representing the Angels and Giants, the two teams playing in the World Series. While the previews are in grey, the download also includes color variations.
- The iSync throbber has been converted by sven7 for use in Internet Explorer.
- Ben Scripps' first set of six Sailor Moon boot panels is being posted today. These are very nice looking composites.
- For players of FAKK2, Matt sent a replacement splash screen and instructions for installation.

Today's News by Cletus And they call it: Macaroni. As we all know by now, there are certain maintenance scripts scheduled to run in the middle of the night on a Mac. "Macaroni solves this problem. If a scheduled maintenance task is not run when it's normally scheduled, Macaroni automatically ensures that it's run at the next opportunity, whenever the Mac is on." The uniqueness of Macaroni over other similar programs is that it can handle these tasks vis-à-vis a schedule. Here is a segment of the FAQ: Aren't there free tools that do the same thing?: - Some require the user to remember that maintenance tasks are due. Macaroni handles scheduling automatically, remembering these things for you.
- Some require Unix experience to install and use. Macaroni provides a Mac OS X-style installer and control panel.
Marcel Bresink has announced the release of a new version of TinkerTool. This release fixed a user interface bug where the Cocoa font-smoothing control could mistakenly be enabled in Jaguar. The Icelandic language package has been revised completely and is now fully translated. The release also provides completely rewritten documentation for the program. Enter the newest version of AutoHide. Click on a new application and automatically hide the previous one. This is really useful. One bug though needed to be fixed. It was a bug that was preventing "never hide when switching to" feature from working consistently, this is now fixed. There is also an "About" box now. The other bug fixed in this release is one that caused AutoHide to show in the dock under 10.1x. How about a robot on your screen? "Creature is perhaps useful, perhaps ridiculous, perhaps entertaining." Creature is a simple, mobile utility. You can setup a custom menu to launch applications, open files, visit websites, play sounds or speak text. To the right you can see Cletus' creature. I have not named it yet. It seems so impersonal to leave it at just "Creature" :D CoolBackground runs a screensaver as desktop background. I never really saw a need for this feature of Mac OS X. But many do, so go for it! Changes include: - You can choose another screensaver than is currently selected in your Preferences Pane.
- Full Cocoa application.
- It does not open the Terminal application any longer.
- French localization is completed.
- You have a choice between graphic and non graphic application (startup item use).
While we are on screensaver news, Street Crossing is another one you may wish to look at. This one is described as an Artistic video screensaver. Now this is a screensavers that I do like. There is a preview in QT for you to check out. Here is a little teaser. Check back Wednesday for the announcment. "A lot of work has also gone into optimizing ????? on OS X, so there is smoother ????? animation, better hot key response, improved Aqua look, and the added option of using Quartz anti-aliased text throughout.
