iClaibrate icon loading......Here it is! iCalibrate! Change the color of the text in events from white text to black text. You can change both the hour and the summary text colors for each of the three event types: Selected Calendar: Selected Event, Selected Calendar: Normal Event, Unselected Calendar: Normal Event. There's room for infinite combinations, as any color in the standard Apple color picker is available to you. At this point it does not function under Month View, but it is a darn good start. I bet that feature is eventually added. Experiment with it! Considering Apple has not posted an update yet, we appreciate Alex's effort. Well done— now if someone can get reminders to work......

The new and very popular screen capture tool— Snatcher has been updated to a new alpha version 1.0a7. The following changes are:

  • Added BMP, PSD and MacPaint formats.

  • Transparency bug fixed.

  • Fixed a bug with spaces in file names.

Marc Moini has been quiet recently, but is back with the release of Startup Doubler for Classic Mac OS X. This version fixes a Virtual Memory related startup freeze that affected some Mac OS 9.2.1 and 9.2.2 systems.

PrefsOverload helps you manage those preferences veery easily. I try out a lot of software, keep some, toss some, but the preferences always remain. This nifty program allows you to manage those changes with ease. This release provides better stability under Mac OS X 10.2.x. It has been compiled with the latest REALbasic version (4.5.2).

The beta testing continues for TigerLaunch. Have you tried this yet? It displays an Applications menu at the top of your screen listing all your applications in alphabetical order—no matter what folder they appear in. Version 1.0b4 adds two new features: you can add folders where TigerLaunch will search for applications and you can specify that the Projects menu should never be shown.

Alrighty... before I get the moniker that I complain too much I want to say I really like the Nike Golf balls after using them this year! Excellent ball. I continue to use the Titleist irons, which I also find a great product. See, I can find my happy place. ;)

However I find this bit of news extremely absurd. Another well thought out management decision on both sides. I know it is not called the Apple Expo, but really. "Apple Says No To Boston Expo," or "Macworld's return to Boston sours Apple " or "IDG moves MacWorld to Boston; Apple won't participate." The logic of it all....

While it's a little expensive for the casual user, Resorcerer 2.4 is the perfect machete is you're a serious hacker. Doug McKenna emailed to say he just released an updater (2.4.1) for both the MacOS X and Classic versions of the utility. While primarily a bug fix, it does offer a couple new features, like a completely rewritten, Carbonized, color cursor editor for Mac OS 'crsr' resources. Curious if this resource editor is worth $256? Download the demo and take it for a spin.

MacOS X Theme Archive...

Last update I mentioned three new appearance themes from Kevin Husted. Today, I have them posted in the archive. All of the new themes since the release of 10.2 have really matured. There are fewer Aqua-mods, and more original themes! Hopefully the resources that are modified (mostly in the Extras.rsrc file) will stabilize in future updates of the MacOS so that creation and installation tools can mature instead of always playing catch-up.

The cursor changing utility Beachball has received a maintenance update, bring the version number up to 1.5.1. The update does better error checking and kills a few bugs.

After reading the Previous Edit to add two clocks to the menu bar, Caleb Hutchins discovered there's an easier way under MacOS X 10.2...

  • Open /System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras
  • In your Home /Library directory, make a new folder named "CoreServices". Inside that new folder, make a new folder named "Menu Extras".
  • Option-drag the Clock.menu file from the Menu Extras folder in your System, to the new Menu Extras folder that you just created.
  • Select the new copy of Clock.menu, and change it's name to Clock2.menu (or whatever, as long as the name is changed).
  • Drag Clock2.menu up to the menu bar. A second clock should appear, which can be changed to analog or digital.
  • That's it! Much easier than your current instructions, and no need for extra software or booting into MacOS 9!

Can't get enough of Jaguar skinned accessories for your Mac? Brian Freeman sent a link to the Wildlife Conservation Society's web page where you can buy Jaguar mouse pads and T-shirts - and the money goes toward protecting the endangered species!

New Boot Images in the Archive...

  • Patrick Browning sends an image with the NERV logo.

  • It's sort of a cross between a HAL eye and the XBox logo. It was created by Jonathan Chapman.

  • Jonathan also made four images based on the RoboTech logos.

  • Here is another version of the Mac/128 logo by Brien Edick.

  • In another of his CD cover images, Dale3 sends P.O.D.

  • Here is a Blue HAL eye from Dave Sisler.

  • For MacOS X, miraijin has created a replacement character for the speech recognition feedback window. Lose the silly circle and get the silly skull just in time for Halloween!

  • Also for Halloween is MacOS 666. This HellOS MOSS is from Matt Soghoian.

  • Daniel Manley has updated the fading static dock poof for MacOS X 10.2.

  • This Mac Astral Boot Panel by Evan Nielson looks like an Okuda-gram from Star Trek.

The excellent freeware weather program— Meteorologist has been updated. If you are closed in by walls and do not have a corner office, check this out. It provides a nice menu bar icon that lets you know what is going on out side. There are many feature enhancements and bug fixes in this release.

Meterologist loading.

ParaDocks adds a cool feature in this most recent release of a program described as a "reincarnation of the Classic application launcher found on OS 9." What is the feature you ask? You can install an Applications list in the menubar of Mac OS 10.2 or later. It also adds a new tiny Applications list window. Contextual menu enhancement and Shortcuts reminder has been added also in the release.

Application Switcher Menu [ASM] has been updated. ASM brings the familiar open application listing to the right side of your menubar. Changes listed in this update include ASm being bumped to shareware status and Special features that now work independently of the menu.

The recently initiated Template menu in Folder Icon X needed some improvements, so a new update has been made available. The author also fixed a serious bug in the generic template items. The paste command bug was also rectified. Grab this newest release of Folder Icon X!

Primate is a new program that helps you manage your Unsanity Application Enhancers. It is not authored or connected in any way with Unsanity Software. I have not tried this program out yet. It appears to act as a type of extension manager to enable and disable the Application Enhancers. The homepage is here, but was down as of this writing.

I mentioned this CMM the last time from Balance Software, Inc. They have just that quickly released a newer version of Ittec you will want to try out. No specific are given in the PR for the new release.

We hope you haven't hacked around too much that you are in trouble with your system, (you did back up right?) but if you have, AquaFix 1.5 proclaims it will correct everything for you.

Repair your Aqua.....If you've managed to hopelessly screw up the aqua interface, or have a theme that won't go off, this Application will replace all interface elements with the original aqua ones. A command line version is included in case you can't even boot into OS X. This version of AquaFix will not work with versions of OS X prior to 10.2. Download version 1.1a for OS 10.1.

  • Mac OS X 10.2 compatible.

  • Now an AppleScript studio application with rewritten interface and simpler installation.

  • Tons of new interface elements restored.

  • Menu extra restore is now automatic and better integrated.

There is nothing like an extended weekend camping trip to clear out the cobwebs. Unfortunately, I didn't arrive home until late in the evening. So please accept this abbreviated posting with my apologies.

Waterfall at Governor Dodge State Park

One of the items in my email box which I read upon my arrival home was from theme designer Kevin Husted (swiscore). He has some new goodies posted on his web site - Three themes: NeXT Jaguar, Power 1.5 Jaguar, and the nifty beta Ice Power 1.5 Jaguar.

Polling Place (better late than never...)

With only 12% of readers not using them, it appears Apple's iApps are a hit. While I imagine readers use iTunes the most often, that still means two-thirds of you are using at least one other iApp. We read last week that Cletus has bailed out of his support for iApps citing a lack of features, and at times I agree with him, but as a package, these Apple supplied programs provide a such a high level of integration that I can overlook the rough edges.

Let's play the Rumor Game with this week's poll. With MacOS X 10.2, Apple added "ink", their handwriting recognition software. Why? The way Cupertino tosses around the phrase "digital hub", they appear to be interested in creating more consumer appliances like the iPod. Will they? The release of iSync has everyone believing that sooner or later there be an Apple Palm device. When? This week's Polling Place asks, "What will be the next new Apple hardware release?"

  • iTablet: a flat panel, keyboardless computer similar to the ViewPad 1000.
  • iPalm: an Apple branded PDA running PalmOS.
  • iPhone: multimedia cell phone similar to the SonyEricsson T68.

  • Clifford L. Haight has taken Hexley, the Darwin Mascot, and used him extensively in this Darwin Makeover package for MacOS X. It includes a boot panel, login items, and more.

  • Think Different - and BIG! This giant boot panel from Jeff Garczewski humorously mixes a giant brain with Jaguar fur.

  • To match his Boot Image mentioned above, Barnaby Johnson Fry sends a Homaur Boot Panel featuring Homer Simpson. Why is it named Homaur? I still have no idea. :)

  • Space Invader sends another new skin for iTunes 3. This one is titled, Neutral.
