X-Tips
All of our MacOS X tips have been placed on a single page. If you think you may have missed any, take a look.
You know how when you log into MacOS X as a new user you get the Quantum Foam desktop? Sure you can change it in the Control Panel, but if you want to change the default forever (or at least until the next System install), Aaron Eiche found the file.
The file is in the directory pictured above. It's in a Quicktime format, but you can convert any picture with Quicktime's PictureViewer, if you have QT Pro. Just match the name and format, and replace the original.
With all this talk about the pico command line text editor, I mentioned that the included MacOS X TextEdit couldn't save files as plain text. M. Schultz came over to spank me with,
"You didn't set the preferences! Go to the preferences to tell it you want plain text. Trust me. (I'm shocked you didn't look there.....it's the first thing I do with *any* program)."
Sorry. It was a momentary lapse of reasoning. You can put the whip away now..
In between updating Dragthing for MacOS X, James Thompson released today a new calulator for both MacOS 9 and MacOS X. PCalc has tons of math functions, and you can predefine constants on function keys. Now you can replace all your wimpy calculators.
(I ain't no programmer, but given the rapid appearance of carbon/cocoa applications for MacOS, Apple must be making the transition fairly easy for developers. Add to that all the terminal apps that are being ported from BSD to Darwin, and we should have an amazing number of options when the OS goes golden!)
SoundSet Central has a new home and design. Stop by and get your share of over 300 soundsets for Outlook Express and Entourage. If be some chance none of those 'fit-your-fancy, use the supplied soundset creator, Expression.
Gosh, I wish this MacInstruct tutorial had been around several years ago when I started ResEx! How to Create A Website walks you through the basic html commands, how to get some server space, and a famous domain name. Now, don't read this and think about how easy it would be to start a GUI site!
It has been over two years since their last update, but just like in Jurassic Park, Fontosaurus Text is back! All the fonts are now free downloads, and there are 11 currently available with more on the way. They've added Volume 2 of the Dan's BePeople icons, and 7 new desktop graphics, one of which is available in seven different "flavors".
The fonts are now $2.00 Giftware (pay if you want), but if you do send a couple of bucks, you'll be entered in a drawing to win the FontMaster's current car. (It's NOT a PT Cruiser.) See site for full details.

Icon & Desktop News

Today I present you with icon alerts, juicy gossip, and lame excuses. Let's begin, shall we?
Icon Archive: Oops! I've been informed that as of last update there ARE icon sets to be archived! My apologies! Please bear with me as I utilize this weekend to move from a state of procedural ignorance towards a Mensa-quality incarnation of archival genius.
Desktop Archive: Hey, you guys have sent in some really cool deskpics! Hey, could somebody help me here ... my arms are full of deskpics and I can't see where I'm going! Thanks for your continued patience as I lovingly and properly post these things!
Thanks for your continued patience as I attempt to Vulcan mind meld with the Archive. And, as always, it's open for your contributions ... you silly rabbit.
Metroid, that familiar space guy from dimensions Nintendo, shows his extraterrsetrial mug in a newly Macified icon set at the Macintosh IconXpress. As Samus saves the galaxy, Baphomet saves formerly PC icons from obscurity.
Dome-o-rama, besides celebrating the cultural phenomenon of making it "snow" on any and all vacations spots, offers some nicely retro icons as well as various desktop patterns that would make even Ward Cleaver say: "Golly."
Hungry for some exotic pixel tasties? Pixture Studios, home of the phenomenal ResEditting of Hide Itoh, offers Hide's Bento Icons Vol.1. According to Hide, his depictions are of various foods one in Japan packs for one's lunch. It would be the perfect diet for me ... food too beautiful to eat.
Visit Akio's Homepage for not one, not two, not three, not fourteen, but 8 new desktop pictures, one of which will soon be in the archives!
Thanks for the info concerning the whereabouts of the Iron Devil! Though I received a few responses, Sara, an angel of icon heaven, gave the most in-depth information: Seems as if Mr. Devil is taking leave on some personal business but WILL return to the iconic drafting board, if for no other reason than to craft some of his lovely guitars for OS X.
Hey, kids, it's time for a little rumor-mongering: When Noel Green gracefully bowed out of icon-making and departed from his IconPlanet, he put the domain up for sale. If one should surf in that direction today, one would read a promise of something to come. And if one puts two and two together, one might suspect from the signature "grin", that the Planet's return might be being orchestrated by a certain fellow who shares the name of a certain robot associated with the earth standing still. I don't know. Do you?
Have a great weekend! And remember to take a break from your Mac! A little solar lumination, rather than that which eminates from your monitor, will do you a world of good.
Hmmm ... your site seems so ... updated! Is it the icons? Could it be the desktop
pictures? Let us know! We'll post it!
Software News 10-06-00 Software News: by Cletus A little slow today so let's go back a bit and check out a potential for the Software Archive. Sound Shuffler by No-U-Turn Software offers users the ability to randomize the Mac system alert beep. This control panel will use any sound in the sounds folder within the System Folder. Try this out and if you want it added to the archive, please send me and email. The SETI@home 3.0 client software for Mac OS X has been released in beta form. The page lists the following requirements for this program: 32MB RAM (it could run with as little as 24MB RAM, but would be quite sluggish) The ability to display 8-bit color in 640x480 resolution (though 800x600 or higher is recommended in order to fit all the graphics on the screen) Mac OS X public beta operating system I have made the notes for this in the SW Archive. Desktopper dot net has released their Klassik K-Scheme for the Mac OS Classic only. A preview of the scheme, which is by the webmaster Butt_O'sigh, is posted on their page. Stop by and check it out. They have also posted and update to Platinum Gold, coming in at 2.0.6 by Morokuma. Very nice K-Scheme you may be interested in. Submit Software News Suggestions!

I can't remember a poll that was so evenly split into thirds as last week's. The good news is that 66% of readers are customizing the look of their windows with either Kaleidoscope, or Appearance Themes.
As my mailbox fills with hints, tips, and files for the MacOS X beta, this week's Polling Place asks, "Do you have MacOS X installed?"
Today ResExcellence welcomes Brian Brasher to the staff as our new Icon and Desktop Editor. You may be familiar with his work as Etherbrian! Brian brings several years of Macintosh graphics experience to this site and we all wish him a warm welcome. I'll muddle through today's update until Brian is familiar with the system, but start sending him your icon/desktop news and contributions.
If you recently sent something to Ilona and it hasn't been posted yet, don't worry, the files haven't been lost in the shuffle. Regular posting will begin again soon.
Replace the Login Screen in MacOS X
If you would like to customize the screen that greets you for your user name and password, it's very easy. The original screen is 400 x 320 and because of button and box placement, I would keep any replacements the same size. (Continued...)
X-Tips
Axel Wefers passes this tip to toggle MacOS X ZoomRectangles:
To enable Finder Zoom Rectangles at the MacOS X Desktop:
Open the Terminal and enter:
defaults write com.apple.finder ZoomRects true
Restart the Desktop via ForceQuit and voila...
To disable Finder ZoomRectangles, enter:
defaults write com.apple.finder ZoomRects false
Again restart the Desktop...
I posted this tip the other day, and somehow deleted it while creating the news archive page. So if you missed it, here it is again. If you want to see all the hidden files and directories, open up a terminal window and type
defaults write com.apple.finder ShowAllFiles TRUE
Holy Mac has a new article up on how to hack the ever-living stuffings out of Office 2001. It covers quit a bit, from toolbars, to sounds, to icons, and more.
OE5 Soundset Central has updated their utility, Expression 1.1.0 with full Entourage support (Office 2001). Stop by for dozens of replacement sounds for Outlook Express too! Expression has also been added to the ResEx Software Archive.
A new beta of AOL's Instant Messenger is available for download. While one reader has already sent me an updated patcher, I no longer plan to host the download on ResExcellence. AOL's lawyers recently shutdown a site that posted a similar patch. Sorry to be so gutless, but we already used up all our legal budget on beer.
The current phydeaux patch for 4.1 is hosted off site, and can be used with the latest beta following these instructions from Chris Wiegman:
I got the new AIM and tried using the patches for it (even thought they were made for v4.1) and thought I would tell you that the patcher program DOES NOT work, but the "aim4.1patch" that contains the ResEdit file (you manually apply the resources to aim) DOES work as far as I can tell.
User Contributed Splash Screens:
- Do you have a special MacOS 9 System folder set aside just for use under MacOS X in the Classic environment? Bill Hughes made this MOSS especially for this circumstance. For some reason, when booting Classic, the depth is only 256 colors, so Bill made this special MOSS for use with the Azul Dark desktop color.
- Chris Kiss sent this beautiful splash for Internet Explorer.
- To go with today's edit on changing the Login background, here is a replacement by Mike Vannorsdel.
- Brian Ellis created this latest Interarchy Wand with a button for just about everything.
- To match the recently released icons and desktop, ReNe contributed this Frunnel MOSS.
- Proving he can create more than just clocks, alexander whipped up a splash screen for Illustrator featuring (gasp, not again!) Brittany Spears!
- This latest Dock replacement for MacOS X by Graham Brown was an interesting discovery. In the Previous Tutorial, I mentioned that the size of the pdf images was 8 x 8 pixels. Graham proves with this large Danger Girl image that the images can be much larger!
- Brien Edick created a Quicktime Player skin with glowing blue buttons.
- If you're jealous of the MacOS X attention, sysinfo created a MOSS in the style of the Login Panel.
Snapshot Gallery by Jeremy Hoesly Heres your dose of snapshots for Monday: - Christopher Brown is back with another submission, this time touting Kei Kinoshitas Silencio con Konicons K-Scheme. Audion, retro-fitted with Smoking Drums Bubble Life face, is serving up the music along the top. A custom desktop picture is displayed in Photoshop.

- This screenshot from James Davie touts RAILhead Designs X-Top desktop picture along with Ben Mackins Liquid Theme. SoundJam, retooled with the EmulateX skin, is dishing out tunes in the upper left-hand corner. Icons from icons.cx abide on the Mac OS desktop, and the Windows 98 desktop peers out from Virtual PC.
- A custom desktop picture and the FT-300 K-Scheme are showcased in this contribution from Nick Muerdter. Audion, outfitted with the Reintegration Graphite face, is pumping out soundwaves in the upper left-hand corner. Icon Factorys Photonica icons are also present.
- A custom desktop picture featuring the Honda Interceptor coupled with Sandy Marnat-Damezs MandariBook K-Scheme debuts in this contribution from PTmon. SoundJam, equipped with Ricos MP3 Omatic skin, is tickling the eardrums in the lower left.
- Eli Rousso sent in this snapshot showcasing a custom desktop picture in combination with Ben Mackins incredibly popular Liquid Theme. Audion, overhauled with the Reintegration Graphite face, is taking music requests in the upper left-hand corner. The Mac OS X Appearance Kit and PY3 Wallstreet iPack take care of the icons.

Icon/Desktop News 10-02-00 Icon & Desktop News by Michael (until Brian is up to speed!)In case you missed it, we posted a new icon set, and six desktop pictures last Friday! See them all in our archives. After recovering from a fried computer, Matt's Matrix is back online! To celebrate, they're releasing four new icon sets; Ghostbusters 2, the Y-Men, Shadows, and Nocturne, and new five desktop pictures! Colheres has posted a new icon set titled, "People I saw in Jerusalem". Rampant Mac has posted a huge update containing eight new desktops and four oversized patterns. The icon-stork has made a delivery at irvi-soft.com. His name is "September (bêta)". He weighs 34 kb, and will have to wait at the nursery for a few days, till he's completely buillt. The beta is about 20 icons, the whole set should contain about twice as that. At this time, it is only downloadable as Mac icons or Gif files. What's new on your site? Icons? Desktop pictures? Inform us! We'll post it!
Software News 10-02-00 Software News: by Cletus I had an 82 for golf on Sunday career low! Here I come Tiger. :) Michael Rabe at Doghouse Online has the theme "GlassWorks Indigo" up and ready for downloading. A preview for a new theme called "Tech" is also available at the site. HourWorld has updated their premier software called Live Deskpicture & Screensaver to version 1.04. The page lists the program as placing a: dynamic image of the earth that updates as the world turns. High resolution maps and beautiful, specially-generated graphics are individually crafted for six different monitor sizes from VGA (640x480) all the way up to 1280x1024 pixels. Every now and then I come across an article I feel others may be interested in. I found this article on the element K Journals page. It is entitled: Making the trip easy with the Location Manager. For those of you who travel a lot with your Powerbooks, you may find this a good read. Symantec and Virex have both updated their virus programs for the month of October. Be sure you download the new files. The Kaleidoscope Scheme Archive has updated with 11 new and 17 updated schemes. OK, what do I like this time? Let's see; Aquatica Z is nice I feel and I really like all of the variations of the Prelude series. Submit Software News Suggestions!

Over the past year, Ilona Melis has done an outstanding job of editing the Icon and Desktop archives, but just like a 603 chip, nothing lasts forever. Today will be Ilona's last update at ResExcellence as she moves on to bigger and better things. If you are a software developer and need outstanding icons and splashscreens, visit her portfolio page to see the work she has done for other companies. Read her farewell below, and drop her a line to wish her well in her new endeavors.
Replace the Boot up Screen in MacOS X
In MacOS X, instead of a MOSS (MacOS Startup Screen), there is the BootPanel.pdf. Located in the directory pictured below, this pdf image file is 353 pixels wide by 264 pixels high. Like a MOSS, the BootPanel displays a progress bar and text while the computer boots. (Continued...)

There are two new BootPanel replacements in the Archives.
X-Tips
Maybe it's because my System and Finder are hacked, but no matter how I arranged my Extensions, I couldn't get Classic to load consistently under MacOS X. Plus, I like BeHierarchic over Apple Menu Options, and I like to leave Software Update and File Sharing disabled. The solution was to install a clean MacOS 9 on the HFS partition I normally use for sharing with LinuxPPC.
In this new clean Preferences Folder, I put aliases to the true preferences from my main MacOS 9 System Folder. Now Classic is a breeze.
Making the rounds on the internet is an Applescript titled MacOS Downloader. Don't kid yourself, it's the "666" SevenDust C Virus. Because the MacOS X uses invisible partitions, even if someone wanted to, you couldn't make an image available for download.
Tired of the MacOS X Empty Trash warning? Hold the Option key while making the menu selection to suppress it. Unfortunately, adding it to the command key combination doesn't work.
If you Command-click an item in the Dock, it opens the folder containing the original item.
Edward F. O'Rourke says you absolutely CAN use multiple network settings in MacOS X
- Open the System Preferences and click on Network
- Enter ALL the settings for one network and hit apply. Close the Preferences Panel.
- Open System Prefs again Click Network.
- Enter ALL the settings for the second network and hit Apply. Close Preferences Panel.
- Open System Prefs again now click on the Configure menu and you will see the 2 network addresses all you need to do is select the one you want to switch to and that's it.
MacThings comes back from a 5 day shutdown with a cool new Themes Page, it contains every Theme in the Web for the Mac OS.
Basic Macintosh Maintenance is the latest MacInstruct Tutorial written by H. Michael Casper. It should help you keep your Mac running smoothly with less chance of problems occurring.

Icon/Desktop News 09-29-00 Icon & Desktop News by Ilona My life has been so busy lately that it is only fair I give up my place here to someone who can devote more attention to ResEx than I could. It's been a little over a year since I stepped through the door at ResExcellence after the invitation from webmaster, Michael Coyle. I enjoyed every update. I was happy if I could bring a little excitement about icons, a little more attention to icon artists who deserve our appreciation for creating those tiny little masterpieces day after day, and wander around the tasteful, elegant harmony of many desktop pictures. I got to know so many wonderful people, and I'll go happy to know that I did my part in the Mac community even if it was a small part. Thanks for reading every week over the past year. It was great while it lasted, but it is time for me to walk away. Michael, Cletus, Jeremy, and newcomer Nate, it was a pleasure knowing you and working with you. Keep up the excellent work! There is no "good bye" really, since I will still be present through my contributions to ResEx in the future too, but for now: Farewell, and good luck to you all! Icon Archive: One new set! - Rob Cousins has sent us a bunch of "FolderApps" in 32bits, mimicking the Aqua look.
- Brian Edict updated his "Icon Replacement" set by adding two more icons, and changing one, to make the set more complete.
Desktop Archive: Six new pictures! - You can show your patriotism, by making a desktop picture as Dany did with "American Technology".
- The unique looking "Orange Monkey" was sent by Jeff Garczewski.
- "Purple Magic" is the lovely creation of Michael's daughter Melissa Coyle.
- Gavin Robb's next picture in his "flavor series" is "Snow" with ice crystals.
- In "Ten", John Wood has put together Bo Derek, Steve Jobs, and the MacOS Ten. What a company!
- So many of you have made "flavored" desktop pictures that I just had to do my own versions, but these "Flavors" have nothing to do with the iMac or iBook colors. These are gigantic, silky flower candies. And if you would also like to see what I was working on when I'm not update my site or writing news for ResExcellence, then look in the Portfolio section at IliCon.
Thanks to everyone! Enjoy! And don't forget: The Archives are always open for your contributions! Two new lovely icon sets "Altrin" and "Chikpeas", four new desktop pictures, and animations are waiting for you at LivePencil. You might know ChillyDays for their wonderfully crafted icons, but did you know that Yoshihiro also makes music too? When you visit the site, open the gallery page in a new window, and while your eyes enjoy the artwork of Yoshihiro, you can hear his pleasant, moody music in the background. Triball Software has extended its captivating landscape collection with a new desktop picture. The "Darkness Descends", but don't worry, it's not a global disaster, it is the latest desktop creation at Creative Box. iKitty's Lair has released "The Color Collection" with nine new desktop pictures. These Black&White close-ups from different angles, show the curves with clever lighting and shadows expressing the excellent design of the "Bug". Yes it is the Volkswagen Beetle, and you can have them on your desktop by the courtesy of Maxgraphic. RAILhead Design keeps producing those simple and useful desktop pictures. Today you'll find two new ones. Ronnlun.com released a new desktop "Deurges", and made their main page cozier by adding more stuff to it. MD's Mac File Library has been revamped and offers icons, transparent and non-transparent desktop pictures, screen savers, throbbers, and more. That's it for this week. From next week you'll have a new icon/desktop editor. Give him/her a warm welcome, and be good to my successor by always sending info about your site's updates! :-) What's new on your site? Icons? Desktop pictures? Inform us! We'll post it!
Software News 9-29-00 Software News: by Cletus Turly responds on his page!: Will there be an OS X version of FinderPop? FinderPop, like most of today's INITs and control panels, will never run in its current form on OS X. I am planning something with similar basic functionality, but it will be rather difficult to achieve the level of integration of the OS 9 version. Look on the bright side -- because OS X doesn't allow nasty third-party extensions to the OS or the user experience, it will be very stable. All the power and stability of UNIX! All the usability of a VT100! :-) I'm afraid that emails asking me "Will there be an OS X version of FinderPop?" will be ignored. Sorry :-/ While you are at Turly's page be sure to check out his beta version of Popup Navigator. What is Popup Navigator you ask? "You know the popup menu you get when you command-click a Finder windows title bar? This control panel adds similar functionality to most applications." On Monday I posted news from Joseph Strout about his new Open Source project for a Mac OS X version of Control Strip called Open Strip. He has released the next significant upgrade to this software. The changes are as follows: implemented SBLoadPreferences and SBSavePreferences modules now receive a sdevSaveSettings message before closing strip window position is now saved between runs OpenStrip now responds to the Quit AppleEvent; this means that it quits properly when the system is shutting down, or when the Quit command under the application menu is used Check that! When I announced on Monday that the Kaleidoscope Scheme Archive had posted 5 updated schemes, they had. Somewhere along the line they added a few more updates bringing the total to 21, without changing the update date(?). Desktopper dot net has released an update to their klassik_b5 K-Scheme. Stop on over. These are still very popular schemes even since the "real" thing is now available. Submit Software News Suggestions!

Applescript News 9-28-00 AppleScript News by Nate Pardon my dust, still getting settled in. Now that people are finally receiving their copies of OS X from Apple, what better time to take a look at scripting's future? ResExcellence takes a look at AppleScript under the new OS, and hopefully we'll be able to start up an X-specific scripting area soon. On a side note, you may have noticed that the Archive's grand opening had a few snags, but these have been dealt with, so feel free to take a look around!
