Browser Options Under LinuxPPC.
Initially, this article was to be tooth-and-nail battle between browsers under the Linux operating system, but as I ran tests, made measurements, and evaluated features, it became apparent there was a clear cut winner - Netscape 4.7.3. So if your interest was to find the best browser, read no further.
But if you are curious about those other browsers, and gleam a little into the future, then please continue. (Continued...)
Most readers know what Napster is, but what about Gnutella? This latest tutorial by Matthew Cone from MacInstruct provides an excellent explanation of peer-to-peer networks and file sharing. I think all will agree this is Matt's best work to date!
Maniac Mike sends this little MacOS X tip:
I found a neat way to create a semi-background color for the clock in Mac OS X. You set the built-in clock to digital (so it's shaped like a box) and set the transparency to minimum. Then you make a Sticky of the color you want, and place it behind the semi-transparent clock. :-)
My copy of MacOS X arrives today. Monday, ResEx will post a nice GUI Mod!
D. Judstra sends another tip to possibly boot MacOS X on unsupported machines.
Here's a little hint on how to install the MacOS X on a 7XXX PowerMac. The included documentation advises to insert the CD and then to restart while holding down the "C" key. I tried that, but it failed to install. I got a disrupted folder icon.
So I restarted the machine without the CD. After inserting the CD-Rom, a window appears. One item in the window is called "Install MacOS X". Just double-click the icon. The machine will restart after about 20 seconds. And then, everything should went right.
User Contributed Splash Screens:
- Everybody sing along with me, "Opps, I did it again...". Today we have two Brittany Spears contributions. The first is a nice looking collage MOSS featuring the young singer by Mike Orticari.
- Jim Dicamillo sent this second - an Outlook Express splash with (I think) a scene from the MTV Awards. My, my, our little Brittany is all grown up!
- If you have a cube, you have got to get this Giant MOSS and matching About this Mac screen from Jim Pelletier. They're really nice.
- The latest desktop clock was created by Alexander. There are two versions of this cool Aqua style.
- A new Explorer splash by Paul Sahner does a nice job of blending the Mac and Explorer logos.
- The latest pair of screens are here from Alex Kleiner. Get the Ruby MOSS and matching Netscape splash.
Icon/Desktop News 09-22-00 Icon & Desktop News by Ilona Icon Archive: One new set! They are colorful, chewable and sweet, but these ones are guaranteed not to cause a cavity. Yes, of course, they are icons. They're called "Gummies", and they were plastered into icons by my little friend Lexi over at iMacKid. Desktop Archive: Six new pictures! - Andromeda is obsessed with "iBooks" and you can tell by looking at his picture.
- With Jonathan's "Elle", you'll get yourself a huge picture of a pretty lady to decorate your desktop.
- If you would prefer your female curves on a cartoon, then Nasty Nene's "G4 Chicks get Funky too" is for you.
- Frank's last B-52's inspired desktop "Private Idaho" contains two pictures, and they are as colorful as they can be.
- From the six new desktop pictures that were released at Flax Creations, "Illuminati" has found a place in our Desktop Archive.
- "Boxayuke" is from Mando Gomez's imagination.
Thanks to everyone! Enjoy! And don't forget: The Archives are always open for your contributions! LivePencil newly released sets "Earth" and "Universe" are just another example of how a simple idea can be executed in such a charming way. There are also four new desktop pictures, among them a funny, cartoon representation of Noah's Ark, and a remarkable work "Cyclists". The new Macs have a strong visual impact on all of us. We saw so many hardware icons for the iMacs, iBooks, etc. This time it's Perfect Yosemite who shows his version of this subject. Made in a spirit of an earlier work, "Little Accessories Set" are the new "Little Icons" at PixelPress. These are just perfect for web site navigation or software menus. Akio's Home has a big update. The "Big Red" scheme turned into "Big Graphite", and its icons of course can also be downloaded separately. Many desktop pictures have been released; the "Quantum X" which I assume has something to do with MacOS X. Then you can extend your Dangerous collection with the "Dangerous Trio" plus get the newest "Witchblade 3" too. Sad, sad news... IronDevil, one of the best icon artists, will close his place within three days. Therefore this is your last chance to get those wonderful icons! Every time I have to write about a closing icon site I'm doing it with the hope that someday it'll return, just as I strongly hope we get to see Tomoyuki Miyano's excellent creations again some day. The two new desktop pictures at Neo's Space cover two totally different subjects. Where Akio left, Neo has picked up; "Danger Crew" is of course about the three Danger Girls and "River" is for the nature lovers. It's interesting to see other works of people we have gotten to know over the years, so go to Lindkvist and look in the special portfolio which had been opened just for you. What's new on your site? Icons? Desktop pictures? Inform us! We'll post it!

Software News 9-22-00 Software News: by Cletus Gideon Greenspan has updated Drop Drawers, fixing a problem in some pre-OS 8.5 systems with version 1.2.5. Remember also that Drop Drawers is now available as a native Carbon application for running on Mac OS X. As Gideon states: We plan to keep Mac OS and Mac OS X versions of Drop Drawers in sync for a long time to come. Not so much for the Archive, but useful to ResExcellence readers nevertheless. Jean-Jacques Dubois thinks you may be interested in Cookie Dog. The author states: Cookie Dog is an application that helps you manage the cookies set by "Internet Explorer". Cookie Dog allows you to delete all or a selection of those cookies, with the option to delete them automatically and to exclude your preferred cookies from deletion. Mars Saxman on the other hand feels his program Starfish is perfectly suited for the Software Archive. He writes: Starfish generates unique wallpaper patterns for a lively, colourful, and eye-catchingly unique desktop. It can be configured to automatically create new images at set time intervals, or you can manually request a new desktop anytime. Starfish creates its images from scratch, mixing layers of fractal and trigonometric algorithms with colour gradients and alpha-channel blending. You don't need a library of existing images, and you'll never see the same pattern twice. After adding the Mac OS X identifying buttons to the Archive and further adding the Mac OS X specific Archive page, Bill Davis suggested taking it one step further to help everyone out and adding whether the program is Cocoa or Carbon. It is done. Great idea Bill. Thanks! RAILhead Design has posted a large selection of screenshots from Mac OS X. This should help those thinking of installing or wanting to install Mac OS X. In case you missed my little ditty on the installation process it is still there too. :) Submit Software News Suggestions!
Snapshot Gallery by Jeremy Hoesly Friday has arrived at last, and, as always, a new set of snapshots await: - Timothy Breihan submitted this snapshot sporting a custom desktop picture. Two pictures in the upper and lower right corners display the fruits of his portable digital darkroom, his PowerBook.
- Christopher Brown sent in this snapshot touting a custom desktop picture designed to complement the MacQNX K-Scheme. Audion is kicking out soundwaves at the lower left.
- This submission from Michael Dymund touts the custom Sinfest desktop picture and the Dimple Theme. Icons from icons.cx and Icon Icehouse are strewn across the desktop.
- This snapshot of Mac OS X DP4 (probably the last one now that the beta is out) by Benjamin Earle sports the Ganges River desktop picture. Fire, a multi-protocol chat program, is running along the right edge.
- Digital Blasphemys Campfires desktop picture and William Burts Ultrasleek Designer Graphite K-Scheme are shown off in this screenshot from James Pelletier. SoundJam, equipped with the Torn skin, is dishing out selections in the lower right-hand corner. A selection of icons from Icon Factory, icons.cx and Xicons are shown off as well.
- A custom desktop picture in combination with the AquaX II K-Scheme debuts in this contribution from Tray. Audion, overhauled with Chris Whittiers XFusion face, is providing the music at the top. Custom icons are also present.

Readers write asking if we will provide customizing tips for MacOS X. Well duh! Don't worry, just as soon as I get my copy of the beta, you can expect to see some hackin'! In fact, I already have a few in the "can" just waiting to be tested.
It has been awhile, but I finally have converted another batch of Propaganda desktop tiles! "Mickeysoft Employee" is a volume 13 containing 72 great looking images.
Bill Hughes asks:
"Say ResEx, wazzup with Interarchy? I can add new Wands from your archive, but how do I keep the default Quicktime-looking one from appearing?"
Billy-boy, look in the following folder: System Folder-> Preferences-> Interarchy-> Home Items. There is a link there to the "Default Interface". Delete it and the Default (Quicktime) Wand will not appear on the next launch of Interarchy. Or you can make "Default Interface" an alias to your favorite skn from the archive!
Updated: Mark Thalman emailed this much more intelligent response:
The proper way of doing this is by going to the Settings-> Miscellaneous and removing the line that contains "interarchy:Default Interface". Deleting the file will work, but you can't go back to that wand if you delete it.

So true Mark. In fact, if you put your favorite wand in the Home Items folder, you can have it shown at startup with the line: interarchy:"name of your Wand".
User Contributed Splash Screens:
- Ben sent the latest addition to the Interarchy Wand archive. Check it out.
- Based on the Graphite Apple Logo, Timothy Breihan created MOSS and About this Mac replacements.
- I forgot to post this the other day. Mike Vannorsdel's Aqua Button MOSS came in two versions, the second of which is now in the archive.
- Derek "tick-tock" Gordon contributed three new desktop clocks in the style of MacOS X's clock. Each version is a little different.
- Graphite is the next color tackled by Alex Kleiner. He sends a MOSS and Netscape splash.
- I have a theory that Akio and Neo are one in the same. It doesn't really matter as long as it/he/they keep sending great looking contributions. This Photoshop splash was sent by Neo (if that's his real name!).
- Lavertue.com contributes the "N" logo Netscape splash.
Icon/Desktop News 09-20-00 Icon & Desktop News by Ilona Icon Archive: One new set! Desktop Archive: Six new pictures! - The iMac flavor series by Gavin Robb continues with the new colors, and this time it's "Indigo".
- Jeff Garczewski's desktop will make "Guitar" fans happy. If you would like to make your desktop icons match this picture, visit IronDevil and download their excellent guitar icon collection.
- The "Sunrise" from Sam DiRocco gives you a view from an alien planet.

Thanks to everyone! Enjoy! And don't forget: The Archives are always open for your contributions! Introducing BredStik Entertainment, a site that lives up to the "entertaining" part. You can find icons, desktop pictures as well as funny and interesting QuickTime animations. Though the subject of Top Icons' recent release is not my favorite, these quality icons cover the topic of "War". Intergalactic Desktops has two new icon sets: "Punk" and "Surprise". Akio's Home released some icons from their latest scheme "Big Red". HappiCons has also changed a little bit, the pages load faster now and new icons are in progress. Magic Mushroom also had a site redesign, and the folks would like to get some feedback. Please fill their mailbox with your comments. Complimenting the "Witches" icon set, here come the "Witches" desktop picture from Colheres. PixelAddict posted two new desktop pictures based on the game "Diablo". There is also a new picture called "River" at Neo's Space. Brycetopia wants you to know that they has not disappeared from the face of the Earth. They are preparing updates, but need your feedback! Software News 9-20-00 Software News: by Cletus Not feeling well boys and girls, so news is short and sweet! I know that every time I consider adding a new system, I look around the web for others experiences or ideas about how to make it go smoothly. Then I go about botching the whole process. That was not the case this time. Consider the theme of this article "If Cletus can do it any one can!" (Continued...) Considering that a lot of software will no doubt start popping up because of the beta release of Mac OS X, I though I better go over the Software Archive and make some adjustments to it. I have added a little 'Aqua button' to the items in the archive that I know are already compatible with Mac OS X or are being considered for Mac OS X compatibility. If any one knows of others please let me know. This should help easily identify those items that should be compatible. I have also added a few items to the Mac OS X page. The items on this page follow the guidelines of items I would included on the regular Archive. If any one has ideas for this let me know. John Montgomery wrote in to let everyone know that CursorWrap is functioning just fine with OS 9.0.4 over the past several days. At the time this was added to the archive there had been no tests on systems higher then 7.5. All seems well on John's machine however. Good news! For those of you who have never tried this extension; it will allow you to exit one side of your monitor and have your cursor appear on the other side. There is basically no stopping the cursor at the borders of the monitor. Thanks John. Submit Software News Suggestions!

By a small margin, most ResEx readers use only Truetype fonts in their system. I have some collections of Type 1 fonts that I occasionally install (Christmas Dingbats and Star Trek fonts), but since none of my printing is to a Postscript Laserwriter, using only Truetype makes life easier.
As to the 16% that have loaded up on Type 1 fonts, I'll bet they're in the graphic design field, doing most of their work in postscript layout.
Way back in 1994, I posted my first web site in TeachText (ancient history in Internet Time). Back then the browser wars consisted of MacWeb versus Mosaic! Now, like cell phones and pagers, it appears everyone has a web page. This week's Polling Place question asks, "Have you ever had a web page?". I don't care if it's Geocities, mac.com, or a full blown site like ResEx. It you have ever cranked out an html doc and posted it to a server for the world to see, then vote yes.
The ResExcellence Hosts file has received an update. View the additions, and download it here.
The latest MacInstruct Tutorial, Digitizing Sound and the MP3 Format, is one of the more technical to be posted on the site, but it provides a good background on what happens when your rip a CD and make MP3's.
I hadn't realized how far Darwin hackers had gotten until I read DarwinInfo, a must see site. Not only is it booting on Intel hardware, you can install XFree86 4.0 and then most window managers! Amazing. If I had a spare hard disk around, I'd give it a try. Remember, Darwin is the core of MacOS X.

Software News: by Cletus
Everyday Software has released version 2.0 of Dock Manager. Primarily for customizing your Application Switcher, Dock Manager has the added feature of managing your Sherlock collection of plug-ins. Main improvements to Dock Manager are:
Improved error checking.
Updated to be completely appearance savvy.
AutoPurge by John Schilling has been updated to version 2.3.2 to "fix" a potentially dangerous bug. An item from the System folder could get moved to the trash. John further states on his page: I hesitate to say "fix", because this app doesn't look at the system folder at all. I suspect the OS is to blame somehow.
Themes and Schemes news:
Akio writes in to let us all know that a newly created K-Scheme has been added to the page. It is called "BIG Red" described in the authors own words as: very red, very jelly like, and quite lickable.
The Kaleidoscope Scheme Archive has posted 11 new and 13 updated schemes. Super cool this time round are: MandariBook, Platinum Sand and E-Box. At least I think so!
