Apple has posted an update for AppleWorks X, version 6.2.1. "This update is only for users of AppleWorks on Mac OS X 10.1. If you use an older version of Mac OS X, do not use this update. This updater only updates AppleWorks 6.2. If you have an earlier version of AppleWorks 6, you need to run the AppleWorks 6.2 updater before using this updater."

Alarm Clock Pro 3.8.1 is an MP3 alarm clock with several alarm types and options. It is designed to work with Mac OS 8 or higher with CarbonLib or Mac OS X 10.0 or higher. I remember being at a MacWorld Expo with a certain Webmaster™ from ResExcellence, who shall remain nameless. He used either this program or a similar one with poor results. Not the programs fault mind you, but rather he forgot to adjust his computer clock for the time difference. Although he did not miss his plane, He was very rushed. I was glad we were on separate flights! :)

At approximately Noon yesterday, the ResEx Server was shutdown and walked across the street to our new location in my recording studio. Because the ISP is the same, I was able to keep the IP number of 207.208.148.74. (Important if your school has 'Net-Nanny' software that doesn't like the sEx in ResExcellence!)

Other than the server, every other aspect of the move to the new studio has been a disaster. We're behind schedule due to some construction problems and it will be a miracle if I can reopen on October 8th.

One highlight of the move was when we rolled the $200,000 mixing console across Dearborn Avenue in Chicago. In the tradition of "Abbey Road", we took this picture.

LinuxInstruct has been updated with a new tutorial on measuring disk and folder usage. While written for the Linux Newbie, almost all the posted tutorials also are appropriate for MacOS X.

Fontosaurus Text has released three new freely downloadable fonts: 5by, a bitmap font (Macintosh only), the funky art-deco font, Martini, and another funky headline font with three faces: YChrome. Fontosaurus is still giving half their font income for the month of September to the American Red Cross.

Today's News by Cletus

Today was a big day for Apple. Mac OS X 10.1 has finally been announced at Seybold. I actually find myself looking forward to getting the final release. Having played with a few of the developer releases, I can testify that it has indeed come a long way. I hope to continue to balance the software news with an equal serving of Classic and Mac OS X releases. At least for the time being.

Apple has also announced more than 1,400 Third-Party Applications are now available for Mac OS X v10.1

ClipEdit Mac OS X.Everyday Software has released the next version of their wonderful clipEdit X  2.5b2. It will allow you to create and edit all clippings, text, picture and URL clippings included. Try out this beta and give a report back to help its development.

  • Recompiled with REALBasic 3.5 for Mac OS X 10.1 compatibility.

  • Printing of text clippings now works again.

  • Various other bug fixes.

Fetch is described as "a user-friendly Macintosh FTP client; it allows point-and-click, drag and drop file transfers to and from any machine with an FTP server, over a TCP/IP network. This version provides much need compatibility with Mac OS X 10.1.

Dock-It 0.6 has been updated for Mac OS X 10.1. Dock-it adds a drive/favorites bar dock and an optional shelf for file operations.

After running like a well-oiled machine, some of my Linux apps were suddenly drawing garbage on the screen. After a launching a few programs as a test, it was apparent that only Gnome apps had the problem.

A Before and After shot of my problem.

A helpful patron of the IRC #ppclinux channel provided the answer. The Gnome desktop uses a library of widgets called GTK. In my home directory, there is an invisible settings file called .gtkrc. Trashing this file solved the problem. The best guess is that a Gnome Theme corrupted the settings file.

The Astronomy Picture of the Day features a beautiful global elevation composite landscape of Earth. Perhaps a diligent ResEx readers can whip up a nice desktop picture and send it to Dan!

Iconizer Pro 1.5.6 is an application developed for automatically generating a set of 32 bit full color icons from any pictures to be a background of CD, folder or other container windows. This version offers an increase in speed when "View Options" processes is selected. It also fixes some minor bugs of the Iconizer Pro Enabler application.

Also updated in tandem is Icon Calculator. This is a little application (124K) developed for predicting output size of an icon set generated by Iconizer Pro (unless you want to use a typical calculator). Changes in this version include:

  • Added the ability to export a 32 bit (millions of colors) single icon from a picture. This icon is Mac OS X-compatible (128x128 pixels).

  • Fixed some minor bugs

Black Magik has released version 2.0 of File Hider. As the name suggests, File Hider will allow you to drag and drop files you wish to protect from prying eyes, and have them hidden. Works with both individual files, as well as folders.

RandomBackground 1.4.3 fixes a nasty bug which appeared if the path contain any special characters. If you are having trouble with this problem, please upgrade to this new version. Remember this is for Mac OS X and higher only.

T&B Brodhurst-Hill Pty Ltd. has announced the release of AppleWorks Enhancement Pack 1.4.1 for AppleWorks. Version 1.4.1 corrects a bug involving Mac OS 9.1 or higher and AppleWorks 6, where some menu commands cannot locate needed files.

Freeware software Xload 1.4 for Mac OS X, will displays the load of the processor when using Mac OS X. Likewise, if you use a Multi-Processor machine, Xload will display the load of each CPU.

Ouch! Over 80% of readers buckle up all the time! That's great to hear. I received dozens of touching letters from caring readers imploring me to wear my seatbelt more often. All I can say is, "Mind your own damn business."

Just kidding. Seriously, I'm trying to buckleup more often, so please, stop emailing me!

To counteract the slower processor speed of the G4, Apple started loading the top of the line computers with dual chips. How many readers have felt the need for that speed? This week's Polling Place asks, "Do you have a dual chip Mac?"

If your Linux Distro is YellowDog or SUSE, there are ready made RPM's for you to install. I took a little time this weekend and upgraded my YDL/KDE 2.0 install and the results were very cool. Application load time is greatly increased. The entire GUI is much zippier.

Andy Moraitis has more info if you use a separete drive for your swap partition.

If you are using a dual drive arrangement with drives of mixed types, it is critical that you use the enclosed link for a different procedure. Since hard drives are mounted asynchronously, the order in which they mount, especially if they are of different types, will vary from boot sequence to boot sequence. As such, the /etc/fstab modification I use in my hack will not work as the device number may change. Since the /fstab file points to a specific fixed device, if this device is not the same as what the system sees during initialization, a new partition called Swap1 will be created. If your system contains an internal main drive, which is different in type and configuration than the slave drive(s), please use the link I've listed below to follow this new procedure. You may also wish to use this hack if you frequently connect and disconnect additional bootable devices as this also affects the device numbers assigned during boot sequence.
