Today's News by Cletus

The Graphic Converter Contest is now officially closed. Check back Monday to see if you won.

Let's kick up the entries a bit during the final days of the Graphic Converter Contest. I will accept entries up to 10pm EST. on Saturday. Full details can be found here about the contest.

Conflict Catcher 8.1 is now out. It provides better compatibility with Mac OS 9.2.1. I would not be without this program. "Conflict Catcher offers detailed information on thousands of files as well as links to individual vendors information including, web address, update address, e-mail address, phone, fax, and physical address." The page had not been updated at the time of this report.

  • Added Mac OS 9.2.1 All and Base sets

  • Updated the Clean-Install System Merge for Mac OS 9.2.1

  • Added new file definitions and vendor information to the Reference Library.

AppleScript Central has posted four new Apple Scripts in its archive. All four new scripts are for the Entourage e-mail client. But even if you do not find these of use, you probably can find something else at the site that you can use.

Free Range Mac has update two pieces of software for Mac OS X. The first is DesktopPictureChanger X1.0b3. "DesktopPictureChangerX is a droplet that was written to circumvent the absence in the current release of MAC OS X of the ability to choose a random desktop picture from a selected folder at startup."

The second is TransparentDock 1.1b7. "TransparentDock is a little script that, well, makes the dock fully transparent... except for the icons of course."

Another piece of software that changes the background in Mac OS X is RandomBackground 1.4.1. Designed specifically for Mac OS X, it is freeware. Additionally for some enterprising ResExcellence designer, the author is looking for a great new icon for the application. Get your creative juices flowing and submit one.

An interesting post in the forum makes mention of a "Friendly E-mail" notification program called ConMail. Readers may be interested in similar software. Several are mentioned as potential candidates. Thanks to FB Eye™ for bringing this tidbit to my attention.

Have a nice weekend!

After almost half a year of continuous 'uptime', I will be moving the ResExcellence Linux server to another room of the current studio. Expect just a few minutes of downtime. Next week, the server crosses the street to the new studio location once the SDSL line is installed.

My favorite Mozilla skin, GreyModern III, has been updated for Mozilla 0.9.4.

If you are looking for some great KDE icons, Kicons has a great collection. Many of the styles are based on MacOS X folder badges.

Another nice KDE icon set, by a different artist Tomas Furmonavicius, is KommonIcons.

As a tribute to New York, ResEx regular Adriaan Tijsseling assembled a collection of images of the city's skyline before the demise of the World Trade Center.

  • DarkTunes is the new hi-tech iTunes skin from Graham.

  • Hein Mevissen must have an endless supply of creativity, as illustrated by his latest icon submission for OSX titled "Just some Pixels". This cute as a bug set of 24 pixel-creature icons will certainly put a smile on your face

  • "Techno Music" by Zach Langbehn is his first ever submission to ResX, and it's a beauty. This elegant and stylish desktop comes in 1280x resolution.

  • Harvey Lubin of Agrapha Design sends in another of his slightly off color and of course politically incorrect desktops titled "Insane" It asks the fundamental question about Microsoft; Is the whole company Insanely great, or just insane? REALbasic Tutorial - Build an Applesoft BASIC Simulator by Erick Tejkowski

After hearing from a few Apple ][ diehards, it occurred to me that some REALbasic newbies might be making the transition to REALbasic from Apple BASIC. Many folks started their programming careers using the venerable Applesoft BASIC on the various models of the Apple ][ (yours truly included).

In their honor, this week we will build a simple Applesoft BASIC simulator, which will allow you to enter and "run" graphics commands from the Applesoft BASIC language. Hang on to your seats as we set the time traveler to 1980... (Continued...)

Allow me to apologize in advance for what will be a couple of hectic weeks in the life of Michael Coyle. After 10 years at the same location, my recording studio is moving a few hundred feet down the street to a new location. While the construction is just about finished, there are still hundreds of wires and thousands of connections to be tested within the next two weeks. Friday we close my current room and start removing the equipment. It's pretty much a round-the-clock operation until the new room is up and running on October 8th. Until then, my attention will be diverted from ResExcellence. User Contributions will continue to be updated, but you'll need to cut me a little slack on the rest of my duties including email.

The studio as of 7-26-01. Click for a larger image in a new window (510k).

From past emails, I know many ResEx readers are also involved in multimedia and audio production. So as interesting items arise from the studio move, I'll post them here.

DV Graphics has updated with a new desktop set and Mac OS X Boot and Login panels. What is particularly interesting it an article on the transformation of the Apple logo.

Since Cletus’ latest giveaway is for Lemke Software’s GraphicConverter, I thought I'd let you know that all the resizing and scaling of snapshot submissions is done with this fabulous program. I receive submissions in a variety of formats including GIF, JPEG, PNG, PICT, and TIFF among others, all of which GraphicConverter handles effortlessly. Much of my workflow is partially automated with AppleScript, and GraphicConverter, with its scriptability, fits in perfectly! I use two AppleScripts for scaling pictures to two standard sizes. This feature alone is an incredible timesaver. All of this capability contained within a program weighing in at less than 5 MB that spreads a relatively small memory footprint besides makes this graphics utility my tool of choice for the Snapshot Section.

Your mid-week snapshot fix is coming up:

  • Ilicon’s “Tulips” desktop picture and RAILhead Design’s RAILhead Design K-Scheme are showcased in this screenshot from Eduardo Alvarado. Audion, equipped with Ady Pratioto’s Intake Titan face, is shuffling soundtracks in the lower right. Icons from Blue Sky Heart are also featured.

  • Nigel Buss contributes this snapshot touting Apple’s “Heavy Petal 1” desktop picture. The ePack for iControl provides the icons.

  • A custom “Jennifer Love Hewitt” desktop picture and William Bart’s BBX Mercury K-Scheme debut in this submission from Alberto Chávez. Audion, tweaked with Frank Van Den Verg’s Milkglass face, is dishing out tunes in the upper right.

  • This dual-monitor OS X contribution from Derek Gordon sports the custom “GlassMacGenius” desktop picture on both screens. A plethora of icons from our Icon Archive, Xicons, and icons.cx are scattered thoughout.

Feel the joy of submitting! Give us a gander of your desktop.

Icons - Desktops: We've got (6) New Desktops, current News From Around the Web and (1) cool Icon Set for OSX to give some class to your desktop. All on display for today's update!

  • When our Webmaster Michael Coyle submitted his "Blue Folder Icons" for OSX, he included a Photoshop template for anyone to expand on the concept. Well, I took him seriously and got sort carried away with "Coyle's X Folders Vol.1". This is the first installment of 28 brightly colored and patterned OSX folders out of over 100. Keep your eyes peeled for more sets in the coming weeks.

  • Jim Zakany sent us a nicely done Patriotic desktop titled "Desktop Flags". Comes with three different variations on the theme, all in 1024x resolution.

  • Nancy Santagata submits "DaVincis Apple" based on his sketch of man's proportions with an Apple twist. Comes in three sizes; 1600 x1200, 1280 x 1024, and 1152 x 768.

  • Dennis Ionov, creator of Gramotki forwared this X-ray shot-turned-desktop of what you find under the hood of the new Ti-Book G4. Pretty impressive technology if you ask me. Comes in 800x and 1024x resolution.

  • Is it real or is it Memorex? Sam freaks's 3-D rendered "Marmelade Desktops" were made in their entirety using Cinema 4D XL 7.1 and Photoshop on an iMac 400 DV. These ultra realistic backdrops come in multiple resolutions.

  • Bradford J. Wiles, creator of MacMonkies submits another of his stylish digital creations titled "Alien Rainbow". Ever wonder what is seen through the eye of an alien? The download includes 800x and 1024x resolutions. While you're at it, visit Brad's website for many things to make you smile, and check out his most recent weekly update.

Polling Place by Michael Coyle

Not even 20% of readers listen to streaming audio regularly. The problem for me is that in order to get a stream that doesn't stutter, I have to select a low quality bit rate. Unfortunately, that makes the experience less enjoyable. Perhaps in the future as the average speed of bandwith in the last mile increases, streams will become more popular.

Do you consider yourself an average law abiding citizen? There is one law I just can't seem to comply with - wearing my seatbelt. When the kids are in the car, I always make sure they're strapped in, and the wife badgers me into wearing mine fairly often. For some reason, when I'm all alone in the car I rarely buckle up. Foolish I know, but am I the only one? This week's Polling Place asks, "How often do you buckleup?".
