The StickyBrain Contest has come to an end. Thanks to all that entered. Winners will be announced on Monday!

Remember that Saturday will be the final day to get your entry in for the StickyBrain Contest. I will be drawing three names out of the hat for a free registration to this great program. Check out the guidelines on the contest page and get your entry in! On Monday the winners names will be listed at ResExcellence.

A-Dock 2.4fc1 is the next release of this customizable application type switcher. I like this product a lot and recommend you try it out. Below is a list of what has changed.

  • Smaller separators

  • Added an option to show each volumes own desktop items in the Desktop contextual menu

  • Reduced CPU usage

  • Improved auto-hiding when the front application goes full screen

  • A few bugs fixed

A-Dock

Desktop Screen Saver uses your current desktop for a screensaver. Version 2.1.4 is a fix for the registration that would not work if you hit return when entering the registration number. It would think that the return was part of the number and tell you that you entered the wrong number. Requires Mac OS 8.5 or higher.

piDock 1.1 is a fast and simple hierarchical file navigation and launcher. piDock is Carbon compatible, and runs on OS 8.6 through 10.x with a recent version of Carbonlib, available from Apple.

Vortex X 1.0 is a plugin for iTunes 1.1.1 for Mac OS X. Images are available on the homepage for you to look at before downloading.

PiXel Check is a utility for Mac OS X that allows you to easily turn on all or specific pixels on your LCD display, allowing you to check for bad or dead LCD pixels. I know I have one on my iBook. Just one though. Click the mouse button or press any key to dismiss a test or jump to the next color in the "Automatic" mode.

Scheme News:

A big tip-o-the-hat to Toño for telling me about the GNU X Archive. It has dozens of X-Window programs ready to install as MacOS X packages - no compiling necessary. I downloaded the AfterStep package and followed the instructions from the ReadMe and had it running on a virtual XFree desktop in a few minutes. Open an X terminal window and type gimp to run MacGimp. I'll be busy this weekend playing with the other packages available. So much software, so little hard disk!

Ted Pearson scored a 1440 on his SAT college exam. To celebrate, he made an AppleScript applet titled Picture Changer. This script is a drag & drop application that sets the desktop picture to the file dragged upon it. It sets the positioning of the picture to automatic, avoiding the hassle of selecting the positioning as an intermediary step. It will also tell you if the file type of the picture isn't known. Be sure to stop by his web site. It will make his day.

NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day is a great shot of the moon. Click on the preview to get a larger version that makes a great desktop.

  • W.Gavin Robb, from Brycetopia, send a Giant MOSS titled Titan. It has a great chrome look and comes with a matching desktop.

  • An Explorer splash from Robert Y. Lee uses a pretty picture to make 'pun' of Apple.

  • Today's anime contribution from Channy Loeum includes a REI MOSS and matching About this Mac replacement.

  • Thirteen year old Stephen Abbene must have been feeling a little rebellious when he made this upside-down flag iTunes skin.

  • "The Computer for the People" is the theme of this MOSS by RedOctober.

REALbasic Tutorial - Screen Capture by Erick Tejkowski

If you've used a Mac for any time at all, you have no doubt stumbled across the various screenshot keyboard shortcuts available in Mac OS 8/9. Mac OS X users have a special treat in the "Grab.app" application that accompanies a default installation. This week we'll create a simple screenshot application . Our version will be different, because it has a moveable viewer. What good is a moveable viewer? It allows you to take screenshots of the same exact area and size each time. Doing the same thing with other screenshot tools is tedious if not impossible.

By completing this week's project, you should know how to use plugins and irregularly shaped windows in your REALbasic project. (Continued...)

iCloud Blueberry - in the Archive now!
Theme News by Michael Rabe

It's Thursday and that can only mean one thing, IT'S THEME TIME !!!

After making a fuss over "X" themes for the past few weeks, it's time to release a new batch of "Classic" themes for readers who haven't made the move to MacOS X.

Today's release of "iCloud Blueberry" starts the fifth iMac colored set of themes. Not only is "iCloud" easy on your eyes, tt's also easy on your Mac. It doesn't need a lot of space on your Hard drive and it takes up very little of System RAM.

You can find "iCloud Blueberry" and all of the other themes in the Theme Archive.

See ya on the flip flop!

If you have a theme you wish to add to the Archive, drop me an email.

Slow day on the update front. But let us see what we can dig up!

PandoCalendar 5.7.3 is a fully customizable desktop calendar for your computer. What's new in this version you ask? They added an option to always save changes in daily information windows without asking. Fixed two bugs that would cause PandoCalendar to crash if run with CarbonLib 1.4. Fixed a bug that would prevent an Apple Script from being able to export notes and appointments to a text file. Compatible with Mac OS 9.1 or higher with CarbonLib or Mac OS X 10.0 or higher.

"Learning the Ins and Outs of Mac OS X" is the newest article posted at the MacAuthority. It starts off: "Are you using the new features of Mac OS X to their fullest? We've found that many people simply treat Mac OS X as an updated version of the old OS instead of the revolutionary new operating system that it is. " Continued...

There was a thread in the Forums concerning changing a sound in the Star Wars Episode One racer game. An interesting piece of software was mentioned. If you missed the thread, the software was called Sound Siphon and was found on this page by PM. Others may find this program useful.

After a bit of inactivity, Themes.org has posted a new batch of themes and screenshot. It is definitely worth a look.

I am off now to buy a gift for my lovely wife Fran, as it will be our 14th Anniversary tomorrow and I believe it was darn near as hot the day we got married. There is nothing like wearing a tux in 95 degree weather.

Bummer. After talking about running MacGimp last update, I find I am no longer able to compile AfterStep or IceWm under XDarwin. It seems I'm missing some libraries. If anyone has hints, or links to rpm's I'd appreciate it.|

Is all this XFree/MacGimp stuff too much voodoo for you? Then Dan Steffen recommends Photoline. While shareware and not free, it's a pretty full featured graphics program that supports layers. There is a version for Classic and MacOS X.

If you have a Nokia wireless phone (as I do) then take a look at this clever hack that Nicholas Francisco tipped me off to. It allows you to change the startup name of the phone and provides access to other secret settings.

Hey Linux users, Ben Herrenschmidt has issued an "All Points Bulletin" for users of his yaboot application. He has discovered a serious bug that can affect the memory mappings. So grab the new version and be safe!

Calendar & Appointment Scheduler for Mac OS X
Calendar & Appointment Scheduler for Mac OS X

Polling Place. by Michael Coyle

The majority of Mac users are the same page as Apple when comparing the PowerPC chip to the Pentium. What I find most interesting about the debate is remembering back to the introduction of the 601 PowerPC chip. Every Mac site displayed their version of a chart showing the PowerPC trouncing the x86 chips and predicting the demise of Intel. This was back when PPC chips were running at 60 Hhz and a Pentium screamed along at 90Mhz. Well guess what, those engineers at Intel weren't so stupid after all and thanks to leaps in manufacturing and design, both chips continue to battle it out. But the chip is only a small part of the equation as Michael Wheeler points out:

I agree there is a gross misunderstanding of how clock speed affects the performance of a computer but I don't agree completely with Apple's assertion that their PPC chips are always faster than Intel's. It depends on many things. Such as the compiler, the task at hand and the architecture of the CPU itself just to name a few.

CPU is only one part of the equation anyway. I am a system administrator for all of the mainframes on campus at Tennessee Tech University and even though any one of the CPUs in our mainframes are slower than either Intel's or Apple's best -- our mainframes will smoke either of them in many ways because the rest of the computer is "up to snuff" unlike PCs and Macs which focus too much on CPU performance and neglect the rest of the system. It's all about I/O or data throughput.

I love Macs! That's what I use at home. I've been a president of our local Mac User's group for years but the truth is Apple has the most anemic data throughput (especially in terms of its file system) of any computer out there but that's still ok for doing most general purpose work because you usually aren't constrained by that limit but for short periods at a time. Of course that's not true for all tasks.

This week's Polling Place question is for anyone using a multiuser operating system: MacOS X, Linux, or even a workstation version of Windows. We all know the safest, most secure way to use our computers is to log in as a regular user and then become a superuser when needed. This way, we can't accidentally change important settings or delete critical files, but how many of us are too lazy. How many of us live dangerously. This week's question asks, "Do you normally log in as 'root'?"

XDarwin and MacGimp

Tools of the Trade. by Michael Coyle

Under Linux, the king of the graphic apps is Gimp. I love its ability to tear off menus. Apple should incorporate this. I have been following the work of the MacGimp group, which is bringing Gimp to MacOS X, and I thought I'd give it a try.

MacGimp.com sells a CD containing everything you need for $29.99 or if you have the bandwidth, you can download the required files:

Install the files in the order listed above and you'll find two new icons in the MacOS X Applications folder: XDarwin and RunMacGimp. Double clicking either of these launches Gimp. MacGimp behaves exactly the same as the Linux version, but you can forget about cut and paste between Aqua and XFree86. The two window mangers are not on speaking terms.

Second and third mouse buttons are emulated with option-click and command-click. If you choose to run XDarwin in full screen mode on another virtual desktop, option-command-a toggles between the two screens.

While it's interesting to have Gimp running on the same desktop as Aqua, I think it's more consistent to have a virtual XFree desktop with its own window and file managers. Towards that goal, I plan to install AfterStep with MacGimp and on Wednesday I'll let you know the results.

Hats-off to the XDarwin and MacGimp groups. It's obvious they have put a lot of work into the moving target called MacOS X. For readers who cannot afford to purchase a commercial graphics application, MacGimp is a great alternative.

Snapshots by Jeremy Hoesly

After an unexpected hiatus due to ISP problems, I’m good and ready to start dishing out snapshots again. Heads up for Tuesday’s installment:

  • OS X’s Unix foundation is once again apparent in this screenshot from Torin Essex sporting a DigiFox desktop picture. XDarwin, an X-Window environment, is configured with the Blackbox window manager. Fink, an open-source software development tool, is compiling code along the left edge.

  • This screenshot from Graham touts the “AquaAgain” desktop picture. iTunes, outfitted with George Krueger’s Graphite skin, is churning out music near the bottom. A smorgesbord of icons from Icon Factory, Mendelini, and our Icon Archive are scattered throughout.

  • Sun Microsystems’ Solaris 7 operating system is the star in this contribution from Michael Holve. The Gnome desktop environment, configured with the Sawfish window manager, mimics OS X with the AquaGraphite GTK+ theme and Aquafied Sawfish theme. Xmms, equipped with the Aqua X skin, is kicking out soundwaves along the top.

  • An awesome desktop picture and Akio’s BIG Graphite K-Scheme debut in this submission from Charlie Smith. Audion, overhauled with Akio’s SlickCorner Graphite face, is dishing out tunes in the lower left. Selections from icons.cx’s Spiffy Apps collection reside in the menubar.
