REALbasic Tutorial - Custom Controls by Erick Tejkowski Most modern operating systems today include a full set of standard interface controls. In fact, one of the greatest features of REALbasic is that you can use any of these interface elements by simply dragging them from the Toolbar onto a window to create an interface. Sometimes, however, you might need a control that simply doesn't exist in the operating system. The folks at REALSoftware expected this, so they gave you an elegant way to create custom controls using a subclass of the Canvas control. (Continued...)
Theme News by Michael Rabe
It's Thursday and that can only mean one thing: THEME TIME!!!
Let's start the month off with a new MacOS X theme. That's right, today you can get your hands on "VRX". This theme has undergone a lot of testing to make sure it's very stable. You can find it in the Theme Archive.
The Doghouse has undergone an update, not only a new look, but Theme Viewer has been brought back. Theme Checker has been updated to v3.0.2. and see some other new goodies with more stuff on the way.
See ya on the flip flop!
If you have a theme you wish to add to the Archive, drop me an email.
Today's News by Cletus Iconizer Pro 1.4.8 has undergone another quick update. It appears the new feature Border Mask command, introduced a Type 3 error. This has been fixed. At the same time, an improvement of the speed of Border Mask was implemented. Also fixed was icon misalignment when the destination is a DiskCopy image. Upgrade is recommended for those using this utility. PandoCalendar 5.7.1 is a small, customizable Christian calendar for your desktop. System requirements included Mac OS 9.1 or higher with CarbonLib. or Mac OS X 10.0 or higher. This version fixes a bug that would cause the Paste menu item to act like Copy. The look is completely customizable. You can change the calendar font and its size, and the calendars background color. You can center the current week as well. David Remahl left me know about his new product at Infinity-to-the-Power-of-Infinity. It is called ReKey. It uses a Cocoa feature to enable users to modify key bindings in different applications on a per-app basis. More precisely, on a per-app, per-user basis or globally for all Cocoa apps. It is like a pref keyboard shortcut, only globally! A listing of current applications for which it can be used can be found here. Conflict Catcher 8.0.9 is the newest version of this Startup file management program. I love this program. One key update is the serial number issue that was involved with using Mac OS X and reverting back to Classic. This has been fixed. A full listing of changes can be found below: - Added Mac OS 9.2 All and Base sets.
- Updated the Clean-Install System Merge for Mac OS 9.2.
- Updated the Open Transport Network Group Link.

Remember your virus program is only as good as your last definition update! Scheme News: There is another new Kaleidoscope Scheme posted at Desktopper. This one is called KZ Blue 2001. Tools of the Trade. by Michael Coyle
A new Apple Tech note describes the function and format of the plist file in MacOS X and which tools are available for editing.
"How to Reverse Engineer and still be Legal" is an article written in plain English describing how to reverse engineer software in a "Clean room" atmosphere.
I have received a report of uses of MacOS X (10.0.4) and Internet Explorer (5.1b1) having trouble accessing sites with capital letters in the domain name (ResExcellence for example). I cannot duplicate the problem which I believe is caused by a firewall or proxy server. Anyone have info or a solution?
Fontosaurus Text has cranked out another four freely downloadable fonts: Kiloton, Megaton, Gigaton, and Snow Crash. (While free, a $2 donation is requested to keep the foundry supplied with Red Bull).

Building QCad under PPC/Linux. by Michael Coyle
The one killer desktop application that keeps me booting Linux is the award winning 2D drafting program QCad. Available under the GNU license, this free program is perfect for detailed technical or architectural drawings. I have used it to get estimates for a finished basement from contractors, and imported a blueprint of a new recording studio from an architect - allowing me to experiment with cabinet and furniture placement.
Most source code build under Linux without modification, but QCad builds using tmake which is not installed by default on most PPC/Linux systems. Even if you have never built from source before, these instructions will walk you through the process. (Continued...)

Polling Place. by Michael Coyle
Almost every ResEx reader followed the events at Macworld. Only 15% didn't give it a serious look, and the remaining 4.35% are the Windows users who come here to snag our great looking desktops! By January's Macworld, I'm hoping for a speed bumped Titanium Powerbook. Then I'll take the plunge.
Apple spent a lot of time during the Macworld keynote debunking the Megahertz Myth. I'm not sure I'm buying it. Winning Photoshop speed tests is great, but I want to look my Wintel buddy in the eyes and proclaim, "Oh yeah, well my Mac has more megahertz than your Wintel!"
This week's Polling Place asks, "Do you agree with Apple's Megahertz Myth?"
Tools of the Trade. by Michael Coyle
All of us want our Mac to boot as fast as possible. John Bailey felt the icon animation in his "Amico" extension was taking up precious time. Being a ResEx-regular, he found a way to disable it!
To my surprise, it is very easy. Just open a copy of the Amico extension in ResEdit and delete the resource ANIM. Close and save, that it! Have fun!
Skinning iTunes by George Krueger

Remember, each month the most popular contribution (includes Snapshots, Desktops, Icons, Splashes, etc...) will win a prize!

- A great looking MacOS X Login panel, with new buttons and positions, has been submitted by Derek Smith.
- Christian Dye has also been hacking away at iTunes and created a skin with slick, shiney buttons.
- When this Matrix MOSS boots, instead of "Welcome to Macintosh", it says, "Follow the White Rabbit". It's just one of the many nice touches that include a matching ATM and Matrix desktop from Sharon Alvarez.
- OK anime lovers, if you've been following along, you know that Channy Loeum is animatizing every app on his hard disk. Today's cool Rei splash set is for Microsoft Office.
