Just in time for the theme contest, Alphanumerica has released a theme builder for Netscape 6 PR2. The interesting thing about this tool is that it runs in the Netscape browser.

I'm sure you know that the latest Super-ftp client from the makers of Anarchie is called Interarchy. But did you know it can be skinned?

Interarchy calles them Wands, and they even include a Wand editor! Now, thanks to Oscar Marsh, we have our first Wand contribution, pictured on the left.

Right now, they are in the general makeover section, but if ResExcellence receives a fairly steady stream of these over the next few weeks, I would be more than happy to open a new archive section for Interarchy Wands.

Two years ago, when I first posted the edit to change a browser's throbber, I had to scour the internet for days to find a site that had posted any replacements. Now, pkelleher.com has a thriving archive and tools, and Derek Scott just released his new throbber tool, named cleverly enough - Throbbertool! This is another application to add/extract throbbers from the common browsers.

Web Site Quickies

Dan Jensen has updated DailyMacfit with a bunch of new desktop pictures.

Mike Davidson posted a slew of cool Mac files including : desktop pictures, icons, flash files and director projectors.

The latest obsession at the Coyle House is The Sims. My kids assure me that the best site for cheats and links to objects and skins is SimsForMac.

I keep saying someday I'm gonna install Darwin, but until I do, a great site for installation and modification tips is DarwinLinux.

Monday, the Outlook Express SoundSet Central mentioned that the sound files haven't change for the next generation email client from Microsoft, Entourage. Since then, a little birdie whispered in my ear...

While the format hasn't changed, Microsoft has added a new sound resource for Entourage called, "Reminder Notification." Like Palm Desktop, Entourage will alert you to appointments or events you have scheduled with the PIM/Calendar system. Also, in case anyone wonders, you don't have to have Entourage running to be notified. There is an add-on that will be available online (NOT on the CD) called Office Quick View that will toss in an extension (very stable) and a CSM that allows you to switch users, open the Address Book, add a contact, open the Task List, create a new task, pop up the Project Gallery to initiate an Office App, or turn Reminders off altogether. With or without Entourage running, if a scheduled event is due, Entourage's sound set now alerts you with a sound as well as a pop up reminder.

It looks like still Apple has winner on their hands with Applescript. With 60% of ResExcellence readers using it regularly, you'll be happy to know the Sloppy Applescript Archive won't be sloppy much longer. Watch for its rebirth soon....

This week, lets crank the Polling Place up with the question, "Do you program in a higher level language?". Some examples would be (but not limited to): C, C++, COBOL, FORTRAN, RealBASIC, and Visual Basic.

Sunday afternoon I attended my first LinuxFest. This monthly event is sponsored by local Linux User Groups. The purpose of the outing is to help people install Linux on their computers. They provide some monitors, keyboards, and peripherals; and you bring at least your CPU. The meetings are usually held in a couple of classrooms at a local community college.

Geeks in Heaven. Linux Install Fest
I was a little intimidated for two reasons. Some of the organizers are from the Fermi Lab and Argonne National Laboratory - no lightweights in the brains department. How would they react to seeing my Smiling Mac logo? Fortunately, my concerns were unfounded. These folks were so nice, they could have been Mac users.

Since installing XFree86 4.0 on my Pismo Powerbook, there were a couple of odd concerns that I have wanted to clean up. The email lists and usual help pages couldn't solve these bleeding-edge problems, but after half an hour with these LinuxFest uber-geeks my LinuxPPC was purring like a well tuned engine. While my computer wasn't the biggest iron in the room, I think I had the best desktop scheme. :)

Surprisingly, the group was very pro Macintosh. I wasn't even the only one there with a Powerbook! So if anyone from the Chicagoland area wants to get together for next month's meeting and install Linux on a Mac, drop me a line. LinuxFests are held all over the US; so look for one near you.

Remember, starting tomorrow, the Snapshots Archive will be posting daily updates! Stop back as Snapshot number 500 gets posted.

The Outlook Express SoundSet Central has been updated! Good news from the webmaster, Erik Barzeski, is that the sound file format won't change in the Office 2001 version of Outlook Express.

Throbb-a-thon has posted 30 new throbbers! The judges narrowed it down to the Top 10, and now you get to vote for the winner.

Frank's Corner is a new iDisk hosted site where you can download Desktop Pictures, Fonts, and SplashSreens.

It seems that with the start of the school year, more computers are helping Team ResExcellence crunch numbers in the RC5 Contest. A few more machines and we may consistantly break the top 100. While we won't find any alien races (other than phydauex), if Team ResEx wins, the site's share of the money will be donated for epilepsy research here on Earth.

Remove the Logo from the Maya PFX ScreenSaver

To demo their new Paint Effects technology in the Maya 3D animation package, Alias|Wavefront released a screensaver for MacOS. While it looks cool, and comes with tons of filter options, the entire time the program is running the Maya logo is displayed in the lower right corner. This little tip by Bryan Harris shows you how to remove it. (Continued...)

Due to reader's generosity, Snapshot's editor Jeremy Hoesly has a huge backlog of desktop snapshots! To clear them out, he will be added updates on Tuesday and Thursday for the foreseeable future. So be sure to visit ResExcellence every weekday to see how creative Mac users dress up their desktop!

Desktop pictures are usually Ilona's department, but I couldn't pass up the chance to tell other Chicago White Sox fans that you can download a couple of cool desktop pictures from the offical team web site. GO SOX! :)

It's winter in Australia, so let's open the Linux Icebox

Everyone's favorite emulator, Mac-on-Linux has been updated. This latest version release fixes that pesky "Packet too big" problem.

The print edition of Linux Magazine has an interesting interview with the founders of Eazel (no Arlo picture :). You'll have to wait a month for it to appear on their web site, but if you go their now, you can get some tips on KDE.

If you have successfully compiled KDE 2.0b3, but do I want to talk to you!

TKB Productions has updated with some thobbers and desktop pictures. Many are based on the animated characters from Chrono Cross.

Apple thought they were soooooo clever when they announced iTools and iDisk. It appeared that you would have to update to MacOS 9 to use it. If you stop by MacInstruct, they have a new tutorial on How to Use iDisk, even if you're not running MacOS 9.
