A recent discussion in the User Forum centered on the font used in the Matrix. Keith came through with the answer: Aurebesh Regular, originally used in Star Wars! You can get a truetype version here, then use TTConverter1.5 to make it a Mac font.

Keith mentioned the font is used in a Matrix ScreenSaver. I've seen this type of screensaver under Linux, but this Mac version is much sharper and very cool looking.

Today is the last day to send your Throbber entry to pkelleher.com. If you're interested in learning to create these little spinning gems, patrick's site has all the tools you'll need.

speaking of throbbers....

ExitMusic has updated with 20 new throbbers of Explorer 5 (links are on the left side arrows). The site is loaded with other GUI elements for you to peruse.

Another 90 desktop tiles are ready for you to download in "No Sympathy for Redmond 2" the latest converted Propaganda set.
Snowflakes from the Linux Icebox

The folks at Easel software have posted a preview of their Gnome file manager, Nautilus. I plan to download and install it on my Powerbook, but it sure doesn't look as easy to do as I thought it would be from a company that "will raise the level of ease and efficiency for all Linux users". While the source code is provided, it surprises me that these ex-Apple engineers didn't release a PPC/Linux binary.

I had a busy week using Linux on my Powerbook. After leaving Xpmac to move up to XFree86 4.0.1 (read of my adventure), I installed a TrueType font server.

A great set of free truetype fonts is Microsoft's Core Font set. It's available on their site for the MacOS and Windows, so I converted a set for use under Linux. Having these installed can make many web pages display better because they are often the font of first-choice.

I also upgraded to Helix-Gnome in preparation for Easel's Nautilus. Surprisingly, the entire desktop enviroment installs easily using an internet based Installer (similar to Quicktime 4).

MellowSoftware has updated The Associator 2.5. It batch processes files and folders to change type and creator codes according to their windows file extension - it also adds file extensions to files according to their type and creator codes. There are over 700 different associations in its database.

Starting with this month of August, the news archives at ResExcellence will be saved in weekly blocks. In the past, this was done monthly, but with the amount of content the crew has been generating, loading a previous month's news page became an exercise in watching grass grow! This will also help with search engine results. Thanks to everyone for making this site your one-stop-shop for everything GUI.

Changing the Desktop Pattern on a Minimum System Disk.

This question has been asked so many times over the past several years, it's about time I wrote it up as a tutorial. Often, a corporation or school will create their own custom Rescue/Repair CD. It will contain a copy of the universal System Folder from a MacOS CD, maybe a repair utility, and sometimes a folder of default preferences; for example, browser bookmarks, help files, or company rolodex.

The System folder from a MacOS CD displays the familiar CD desktop pattern. Many creators of these CD's would rather have their company logo or school emblem displayed instead. This simple edit will show you how. (Continued...)

80 desktop tiles are ready for you to download in this latest converted Propaganda set, "The Road to Victory" which contains 80 images.

Are you working on your Netscape 6 theme? There are only six weeks remaining in the contest, and one of the prizes is an iBook.

Need info on creating Mozilla skins, here's one page, and another.

Those of you who remember my old web site, Desktop Madness, will wish that I could have first read this new MacInstruct tutorial: How to Build a Website. But seriously, if you want to get your club or small company started with a web site, take a look at this article.

Tom Holland has a good collection of half a dozen AppleScripts he has write to automate some batch processes. For example, the AutoConvertor programs change creator/type codes. They're all free, and come with manuals and source.

By a very small margin, readers picked spawned windows for links leaving ResExcellence. Fortunately for the other 47%, I agree with them that spawned windows suck.

The reason for the poll was because more and more sites are spawing windows from their links. I was thinking to myself, "Self, perhaps people prefer to have windows spawn, and your prejudice is stopping you from implementing this on ResEx?". Only if the Poll results were greatly in favor of this change would I implement it, so for now, it stays as it is.

This week's Polling Place asks the simple question, "Is the G4 cube a good value?".

Rick at icons.cx has been busy updating all his Goodies for the new iMac colors. There are new Explorer skins, now splashes for Outlook Express and Explorer, updated MOSS, and a peek at what the icon world will look like after MacOS X.

Toby McNulty has setup a Linux web site that is a blessing if you are having trouble keeping up with all the possible LinuxPPC kernels that are being developed. The PowerPC Kernel Archive tracks five different kernel trees and will even email you when the kernel of your choosing has been updated. For example, this page has a link to a Benjamin Herrenschmidt kernel that supports the internal speakers on a Pismo Powerbook. This kernel isn't even mentioned on Ben's own page!

ThrobberEdit is new program that allows you to change the throbber on Explorer 5 or Netscape 4.x. without using ResEdit. It comes with several throbbers from pkelleher.com to get you started. Remember, always work on a copy!
