ittec loading....ittec 1.0.0d8 provides a CMM and Preference pane control for showing folder contents. All the content information is a simple control-click away. This release is the first public beta, so information is requested by the author. Give this new CMM a run through and report your findings back to Eric Cole.

The newest version of the popular Folder Icon X is available. This update allows you to set the startup icon, which is the icon that is automatically loaded when Folder Icon X is first launched.

Speed Download 1.8.5 provides a ton of new features and enhancements. I mean a ton. Below is just a partial listing.

  • The entire Speed Download code has been completely cleaned up and trimmed.

  • Updated and optimized SD for compatibility with CarbonLib 1.6.

  • Updated and feature enhanced/faster Speed Download Plugin for Classic and OSX.

  • Much better handling of .tar and .tgz file extensions.

  • Even tighter integration and compatibility with current Mac browsers.

AppleScript Central has posted several new Scripts for download. A few of them are: Change Startup Disk v1.0.8, Free Backup, AutoCheck and Mouse. Stop over to the AppleScript Central page to see all of the new ones.

Rant... or perhaps I am just rambling?

Cletus™ is not happy with Apple deciding to charge for iTools (.Mac) services. I only use .Mac for email. I sent my opinion and suggestions into the void here. It is the principle of it that makes me mad. The increase of services that I do not use are not worth it. The uncontrollable email filtering they apply has made me irate. I suggested a sliding price scale based on what you use. Although, to tell you the truth, if they decided to do this and only charged 12 dollars a year for just email I still would not accept. If I used their (limited hits) home page service or their slow as a sloth storage area then it may be a deal. They sucked me in and now after two years decide to charge. The pricing is flat out a bogu$ money making scheme.

Jaguar $129.00! I just purchased a G4 and 10.1.3 and have to pay again to get 10.2. That is what the software coupons are for— Mac OS up-to-date!? I see no expiration date on them. But this is a major release! Really? Many (including myself) are calling it the first true— what it should have been to begin with— version. Let's see: $129.00 for 10.0 (beta), $19.95 for 10.1 and $129.00 for 10.2?

For $180.00 you can have email and Mac OS X 10.2. Not system 10.5... no- no, just system 10.2. Here is what I will do. Drop my .Mac email and use this one Cletus. I will get Jaguar since I will be saving the $50.00 from having no .Mac account. And by going through the educational store at Apple, the purchase price for Jaguar is only $69.00. Still too much. But wait... Fran, dear wife, our anniversary is coming up in August! She can buy Mac OS X 10.2 for me as a gift and I can get out of this without spending a cent— this year.

Next year I can take the $100.00 by not having a .Mac account and use that to buy system 10.3 for only $29.00. Maybe it isn't so bad after all. :D Rant concluded. Have a nice weekend.

Last update I mentioned Custom Splash Installer (CSI) for changing the splashes on Mozilla, OmniWeb, Netscape, and Explorer. Monty Lee wrote to say:

"I decided to download and try CSI. Unfortunately it requires a graphic file, and all the ResExcellence downloads for splash screens are ResEdit files."

The program creator, Greg Fiumara, replies,

"Try doing this. In ResEdit, copy the PICT resource to the clipboard (Command-C). Then, go into any graphic program, (I would recommend GraphicConverter for this). Create a new file, paste the contents of the clipboard (Command-V) and then save the file. If you do use GraphicConverter for this task, simply copy the resource to the clipboard (as described above) and press Command-J (File-->New-->From Clipboard) and then save the file. Now, all you have to do is drag the saved file's icon onto the CSI icon, or in CSI, select an application and click Select Custom Splash... I may add support for opening ResEdit files and extracting PICT resources in a future version...this is a good idea. I hope this helps!"

Hmmm.... I guess ResExcellence can post splash screens in a graphics format instead of as ResEdit resource files, but what image format should be used? I'd suggest PNG since it is a loss-less format that is cross-platform. Email your opinion.

Way too many contributions have been arriving without any READ ME providing a creators name or any creation information. I'm not looking for an autobiography, just include a little text file with a name so I can attribute your work. Sorry, new rule: if you don't include a READ ME with a name ResExcellence will not post the contribution.

Now things may get interesting. iMacLinux mentions that the new Amiga computer, which uses a PowerPC chip, not only runs Linux, but also allows you to run MacOnLinux, providing Classic MacOS on non-Apple hardware. The possible market running this configuration is small so Apple may choose to ignore it, but this does technically violate the MacOS End User Licensing Agreement.

It's easier than ever to contribute using the new Browser Based Upload Page! If you contribute a file to any section of ResExcellence, you could win a PowerMax gift certificate worth $50 ! (How?)

  • If you're looking for Boot Panels, today's batch features a gaggle of lovely ladies for you to google at! The first of two Boot Panels from John Rose features the eternally beautiful Cindy Crawford, and the second an unnamed lady in Sheer.

  • Conrad follows up with a pair of Boot Panels of my first wife, the outstanding Isabeli Fontana. (Ok, I was never married to her. I wouldn't want Cindy Crawford to get jealous.)

  • Now I have a couple of contributions to spice up your Dock. Daniel Manley sent a Dock Poof of a static fade away...

  • ..and for lovers of a dark themed desktop, Hexabob sent a new set of dock background images.

ResExcellence Laugh Track Machine by Erick Tejkowski

At MacWorld New York today, REAL Software announced the release of REALbasic 4.5. In honor of their new release, today we'll build a Laughtrack Editor. With it, you can add a laughtrack to your favorite QuickTime movies. This works great for post-processing your favorite iMovie creation. So, get ready to laugh!

  • One of the beloved featured missing in OSX is the ability to view icons in button mode, as you can do in OS9. Flax Creations decided to upgrade the feature for OSX with Transparent Button Icons Vol. 2. This set features eleven semi transparent buttons coupled with some commonly used system level and application icons. The nifty part about this set is that whatever background you happen to be using, it will show right through.

  • Adam Dickson Icons vol. 1 is a very cool grouping of stylized folders designed for OSX. The set includes 35 different multipurpose "briefcase" icons.

  • Order In A Land Of Choas by Alan Sherwood of EA Design, is a piece based around his glass set, the simplicity still holding through but with the tweeks of some very odd, 'chaotic' landscapes for the surroundings. He notes that this is his way of showing that there is some hope for our (or possibly just his) sanity. Comes in 800x and 1024x resolutions.

If you are looking for an easy way to change the splash screen on your browser, Greg Fiumara has updated Custom Splash Installer (CSI). Previously, this free utility only worked on Mozilla, but this newest release can change the splashes on OmniWeb, Netscape, and Explorer.

Let's talk more about changing splash screens...

CSI will change your browser splash, but what if you want to modify some other application's splash? Using Mozilla as an example, here are some general steps that should work on many MacOS X applications.

Most MacOS X applications are packages of related elements. If you Control-click this type of application, you'll notice the "Show Package Contents" menu option.

The application will now be converted to a folder. Open it and navigate into the /Contents/MacOS

Generally, inside the /MacOS directory is what we use to think of as the Classic MacOS application. If you open it with ResEdit (or MacResourceDog under X) you will see the usual ResEdit resources. In most cases, splash screens will be stored in the PICT resources.

Paste in your replacement image and save your work.

Remember, these are general instructions and while they won't work for every application, they should get you started on the correct path.

Sosumi for Classic MacOS

Coming to the rescue of readers in this forum thread, Ben Boldt is in the process of converting the popular Sosumi Appearance Theme to a Classic MacOS version. Release 1.0 is available.

07-15-02 News Polling Place Icons/Desktops

Today's News by Cletus

We are back! Did you miss us? My wife and I enjoyed a very relaxing, and fun week at the Coyle's lake side home. I even managed to get Michael and his son out on the golf course. There is potential there. 1600 miles later though, it is time to return to ResExcellence away from scary beasts and coyotes in the night. The week was spent computer/internet free believe it or not, and I do not want to rehash old news, so I will pick up with PR received only since last Friday.

Hostal gif loadingJohn Lowrey from Northern Softworks wrote in about the updated release of Hostal. It is a hosts file database and editor. You no doubt have heard Mike mention host files at various times. It is available for Mac OS and Mac OS X. Here is a more complete overview:

Before the DNS system, IP address mapping was done locally at each computer by means of a specially formatted host file. Today the host file goes virtually unused even though most operating systems still support them. A properly designed and formatted hosts file can not only help speed up the web surfing experience, but can allow simple, effective content filtering as well. Hostal allows easy control and editing of the Host file on your computer. Hostal supports both host mapping and host blocking. Hostal supports Time to Live to prevent stale host mappings. For users on a network, Hostal detects an existing Hosts file and incorporates those settings as well.

While it is very common place to work within virtual desktop settings in Unix, there really was nothing similar in Mac OS X, until now. Enter CodeTek VirtualDesktop! CodeTek VirtualDesktop allows you to have up to 100 separate desktops that you can use to divide your applications' windows any way you wish. For example, as a developer, you may have Project Builder , Terminal, Internet Explorer, etc. all running at the same time. Instead of hiding applications when you need to get them out of the way, with VirtualDesktop you can set up Project Builder and your Cocoa documentation IE windows on one desktop, Terminal on a second, and a general IE windows on a third. Then, when you want to use terminal, simply select that desktop with a single mouseclick or hotkey sequence and you only see the Terminal's window. Now you can switch to the third desktop and see what's new on ResExcellence!

MacMotiva have posted a couple of new Screensavers for Mac OS X. They are IGS Twisted 1.2 by DJ Brad Anderson and SereneScreen Marine Aquarium. Looks interesting, check them out.

Did you catch this? Turly hangs up his OS X compiler team spikes in favor of walking shoes as he leaves Apple. Sorry to hear this. Thanks for the great FinderPop program that I use to this day when in Mac OS 9.x!

Teaser.... Expect to see a couple of small Jaguar-only features in the small DragThing update coming to a store near you "very soon, along with some fixes specifically for the next version of Mac OS X."

QuickKalendar icon loading....Quick freebie time! How about a nice looking and extremely useful calendar program where, when you print it, it prints according to the size of the window you have set? Nice! QuicKalendar is just such a program. Below is a quick run down of a program that should find its way on to everyone's computer.

  • Simple, easy to use interface.
  • Calendar window resizes from 400 x 250 to full screen.
  • Prints the current calendar in it's current size.
  • Highlights the current day using the highlight color selected by the user in the Appearance Control Panel.
  • Remembers the dimensions and position of the calendar window
You can also choose to have the Calendar Window resized to full screen on launch.
  • Supports both the American Calendar Format, and the European Calendar Format

Polling Place by Michael Coyle

I guess we're all just a bunch of little kids! Roughly two-thirds of readers have a toy on their desk. The forum thread on this poll was entertaining. My favorite toy mentioned was a set of Lego blocks. This sounds like so much fun that I intend to add a small set of Legos to my own desktop as soon as possible!

Let's stick with the topic of toys for one more week. My kids are sticking with a Sony game console rather than following the hype and moving to an Xbox. The Coyle home has a PlayStation 2, Nintendo 64, and Super Nintendo (and don't forget the two GameBoys!). Their preferred game console is the PS2. What about you? This week's Polling Place asks, "What's your preferred game console?"

Bonus B.S. by Michael Coyle :-)

As he mentions above, Cletus and I spent the past few days together relaxing. Below is a representative photographic memory. Scary isn't it. Maybe tomorrow I'll post the pictures where we are riding the llamas.

BTW, we caught a lot of fish on the lake. It's not my fault that none were bigger than an iPod.
