Tom Richard wrote in to let everyone know that he has updated Change Startup Disk to 1.4. The Deluxe version works on multiple partitions/hard drives and incorporates one nice, friendly opening dialog box to get you in and out quickly. The Deluxe version does require the 24U Appearance OSAX.

Oh yeah! Unsanity does it again! FruitMenu 2.0 is a major update to this haxie that gives you the ability to customize the Apple Menu and contextual menus. While CMM's have been creeping out more and more for Mac OS X, FruitMenu really shines in this area. Check out the image below. The list of changes is long and can be found in its entirety on the homepage.

Fruit Prefs loading.....

VoJou Software has posted a new beta version of @-time— 2.0b1. It is a Dock based application that displays the time in several world cities. It also displays GMT (UTC) time and Internet (@) time. If you are in the habit of communicating with people in several different time zones, you will want to check this program out.

  • New Mac OS X only version

  • Use a dock menu to display time in several locations

  • Display a custom time in the application Dock icon

  • Many other improvements

Classic Toggler 1.4 allows complete management of the Classic system under Mac OS X. Northern Softworks has added a Classic Applications menu as well as making it completely compatible with Mac OS X 10.1.5.

SGI loading....Super Get Info 1.0.8 from Bare Bones provides you with an excellent replacement for the Show Info command. Several enhancements have been included with this release: SGI now supports viewing and editing of Mac OS X's Finder comments. Big one— has the capability to copy and paste icons, by selecting the items icon in the same manner as for a Finder info window. Email addresses in vcard previews are now presented as clickable mailto links. There are a couple of other new features and many bug fixes. Well worth checking out.

One complaint you always hear about Mac OS X is the speed. It is slow at times, but after only using Mac OS X for several months it is less noticeable as you get use to it. SpeedMeUp Pro 2.0 helps speed things up, applications launch faster by running the prebinding scripts. This way programs spend less time looking up and "binding" with various libraries and frameworks.

David Remahl was kind enough to send in an email letting us know that Infinity-to-the-Power-of-Infinity has released a major update to their award-winning icon creation tool Can Combine Icons, bringing it to version 3.0.0. The update adds powerful features such as drop shadows and 3D effects as well as great performance enhancements and bug fixes.

Renaud Boisjoly also wrote in to mention that PinPoint 1.2 is now out. PinPoint is a cursor enhancement tool for Mac OS X. It adds HotKey support, a new cursor, and better interoperability in Classic applications. He writes: "Its great for demos where the audience needs to follow the cursor, for people with large monitors or multiple monitors and for people with visual disabilities (for whom it is free!)"

  • Gone but not forgotten, by Alan Garcia laments the fact that Apple has decided to stop all development on OS9, and will be devoting it's energies to OSX. Xthemination has the scoop on two new MacOS X appearance themes. Take a look at MakkiX by Takashi Izawa (on the left) and SlickMetal X 1.0 by George Lampman.

John Engler sent a link for MacStumbler, a program that lists all the available 802.11 wireless signals in an area. If these networks do not require a password and are configured for DHCP, an unethical person could access the signal for internet access. I can't wait to see how this next utility works in downtown Chicago at lunchtime, not because I want to steal my internet access, but because I'm curious to see how many 802.11 networks are in the area and if they are secure. If you are lucky, there may even be a free wireless company in your area

John also recommends you read this article on making a bootable emergency CD for MacOS X.

Users of Eudora may remember the elusive x-settings, hundreds of unlisted preferences that you can change. There is a list on Qualcomm's site, and Adam Engst from TidBit's maintains an email list to let people know when the x-settings have been updated. Adam also has a great site for all things Eudora. Changes are listed below:

<x-eudora-setting:160> Name of charset to use when sending mail with special characters, if Eudora Tables plug-in is not being used.

<x-eudora-setting:298> REMOVED FROM 5.1.1. When checked, Eudora will download HTML graphics itself instead of using URL Access

<x-eudora-setting:352> Check to Shift-Cmd-N for check mail just like Apple's Mail application. Use Cmd-M to minimize window.

<x-eudora-setting:353> When checked, Eudora will display PDF files inline. Setting reversed; use "n" for ON, "y" for OFF!

<x-eudora-setting:354> Check to use Shift-Cmd-A for attach just like Apple's Mail application. Use Cmd-H to hide application. Setting reversed; use "n" for ON, "y" for OFF!

<x-eudora-setting:355> When checked, Eudora will use URL Access to download HTML graphics itself instead of downloading them itself

<x-eudora-setting:10106> Give up on parsing MIME structures deeper than this

<x-eudora-setting:10114> format for doing AUTH PLAIN with initial argument.

<x-eudora-setting:32416> Scroll this many lines per scroll wheel click.

<x-eudora-setting:32417> File suffixes (separated by bullets) that mean a file is a sound file

<x-eudora-setting:32419> Name of system Documents folder. Used to find classic Documents folder.

Is seems everyone is helping to spice-up the Linux Desktop! Gedeon Maheux from the Iconfactory submitted a new set of Tribal Mask icons to KDE-Look. Just as when Dan Flax submitted his icons and desktops, Gedeon's icon set has been favorably received!

First things first. Thanks to Mike for the hack. If you missed this one, you can check it out here: "Using an external email program with Mozilla 1.0." It fits my needs perfectly, and it may fit yours.

Silk icon loadingUnsanity— Thank you also. I started using Silk and was bitten by the nasty AIM bug whereby sending an Instant Message would result in an instant and unexpected quitting of the program. A beta snuck out two days ago, which I admit I snagged. Now the real deal is out. Version 1.1 has the following: (partial list)

  • Added some default exclusions for: AIM, AOL Client, and Radio UserLand
  • Partial German translations (Thanks Matthias Merzbacher)
  • Removed exclude and replaced it with per application defaults.
  • Can now set any of the three Quartz rendering flags independently for each application or globally for all Carbon applications.
  • Changes take effect immediately.
  • Excluding an application no longer requires a relaunch of the Silk daemon.
  • Updated the icon (to the right) so it looks better in System Preferences.app.

Those lucky enough to have been the winners in last week contest will know about this already, LaunchBar 3.2.1 is now out. The list of features updated with this release is too long to list here, but is fantastic. Quickly launch any program file or folder simply by typing in part of the name.

AlphaOmega Software have released ASCII Viewer 1.5 which is a utility to display the ASCII table and the code of pressed keys. This can be useful for HTML coding or hex code editing.

ASCII viewer icon

Continuing along the hex trail, HexEditor 1.4 is now available for download. This version adds two items. First is a field disclosure to allow better screen usage and second is a preferences panel, uppercase/lower case hex selection, option to work on copy and allowing editing to be selected by default. One bug fix: Corrected a problem that made it impossible to open multiple special files simultaneously.

Cass Design, has been online for 4 years, but have just released their first ever Mac OS screensavers for Mac OS X! Welcome to the big time! The first is "Ansel Adams Photographs" The description is thus: In this screen saver are the photographs reflecting the beauty of America's National Parks, all seen through the lens of the great landscape photographer Ansel Adams.

It seems the Dock version of Snard had a bug with Default Folder X, thus the update to this Dock and menu based launcher. If you use both programs, it is recommend that you update.

Non-Roman file names are now compatible when using the newest version of Classic Menu 2.5.3. It provides both an Apple menu on the left of the menu bar and a Process menu on the right. These menus are available within all programs while the Classic Menu application is running.

MemoryStick 1.1 provides several nice improvements to this utility to indicate the amount of RAM being used. The main improvement is that it now indicates how many swapfiles you have. It also has a Dock icon that now graphs RAM usage dynamically so you don't need MemoryStick's window. Additionally, all colors are now user-configurable.

The ever popular DockFun! has undergone significant changes. Enough that it ranks a new number and availability as a Preview release. The interface has been completely redesigned. Looks pretty cool!

Swaptop loading

SwapTop 1.7 runs in systems 8.6 - 10.1x and provides the user with a Desktop picture manager with automatic image download system. This version adds the ability to download higher quality "Webshots Unlimited" content, the ability to preserve image aspect ratios, and a Dock menu to set desktop picture on Mac OS X.

Cool Tip!

I recently added several programs to the Mac OS X Software Archive. I am still hanging loose on adding things on a whim as several programs have come out and then quickly disappear. Staying power gets you in there!

This is one of the rare times you will read of a recommendation for a Windows application on ResExcellence! Raoul Reyes was the first of many readers to recommend Putty for secure telnet sessions under Windows. It's open source and full featured, so if you need to remotely log into your MacOS X box, I guess it's ok to use a Windows app. :)

Using an external email program with Mozilla 1.0. by Michael Coyle

After months of prodding, I finally convinced Cletus to switch to Mozilla. He wished to continue using Entourage to handle mailto: links. In his pleading letter to me, he begs, "I have never asked you for an edit before. Please find a way to do this!"

I wish I could claim it was so difficult that I pulled-out what little hair I have left, but it's a rather easy modification - if you know where to look! (Continued...)

More on Moz...

Ryan asks, "I went to the MozDev site to download the SkyPilot theme and other than it taking forever to finally get to the download page, when I click on the theme name to download it a page comes up that says "false". Is there a way that I can get it somewhere else? I am using OS 9.x is that going to be a problem to get other themes, do I need X?"

Ryan, you are a checkbox away from happiness. Like me, you probably unchecked "Automatic Software Installation" in the Mozilla Preferences fearing a rogue Windows virus would try to seize your computer, but in order to install a theme, you need to activate the Software Install. You'll find it in the Preferences under Advanced-->Software Install. You can check/uncheck the option just for the moment you are installing the theme.

A much faster and leaner Change Startup Disk is now available. This AppleScript allows you to bypass the standaard system preference panel and change the startup disk much quicker. version 1.4 requires 24U OSAX which it will automatically download upon activation.

Picture Play image....Picture Play 1.6 is now available. The update list is a hefty one and well worth checking out, just like the program itself. I have mentioned this previously, as you use it to make some custom desktop pictures as an idea. Here is a sample screenshot from Cresendo's home page. Picture Play lets you combine digital photos, scanned images, or any other graphics to create rich and diverse compositions with editable text content, backgrounds, and stylish effects including translucency, transparency, rotation and more.

The popular Locator find Utility has been updated to version 0.7.2. This update adds several needed functions and squashes several nasty bugs. A list from the update is included below. This program is a favorite of mine and it just keeps getting better and better.

  • Option to index and search archives on removable media. Mac OS X formats: .zip, .gz, .tar, .tag.gz and .tgz are included. However, there is currently no support for proprietary formats like StuffIt archives.

  • Added "Grep"-like functionality.

  • Fixed a bug that could lead to some results not being shown in some rare conditions when the "search style" was set to "ends with".

  • French localization issues fixed.

  • Fixed a bug that lead to crashes when selecting a ".dfont" when "Try to load images" was checked in the preferences.

  • Some other bug fixes and improvements, see the included documentation for a much fuller list.

GoodDoug Software have updated their version of Xmas Lights. A little out of season, but if you like lights hanging from your menubar, then this is the program for you.

Centromedia.Com has posted a new screensaver for Mac OS X called Falcon 4. It is a F4 Flight Simulator based screensaver. It produces some really unique and stunning images.

Unsanity quickly provided a fix for a problem with their recently updated Cee Pee You. It is a Menu Extra that displays CPU(s) load in your menu bar and, optionally, on Griffin Technology PowerMate. The load averages are updated every second. The previous version had a "very large memory leak" that is now fixed.

menubar image....

Several other popular programs saw updates over the past few days:

The AppleScript Trash It! rose to version 1.2 fixing a problem where it would not delete trash dragged from other partitions/harddrives.

iconCompo allows one to compose an icon from two images. This is release number 1.4.3 and provides several fixes and enhancements.

Kinetic Creations, Inc. Export Icon Plugin for Adobe Photoshop creates custom icons directly from Photoshop images, using the images RGB pixel data to create 4, 8 and 32-bit icons for the custom icon file. This update to version 1.7 provides compatibility with Mac OS X.

Between Silk, Mozzilla 1.0 (my new default browser) and the Machzilla theme, all of which Mike mentioned last week, I am very happy with Mac OS X and internet browsing again! Why mention them again? Because all these programs deserve another mention in my book. They are that good! Now if Mike can figure one item out for me, I will be the happiest person alive. Stay tuned....

poll
Polling Place by Michael Coyle

More than half a year ago, I asked if you would subscribe to a web site. Last week, I asked if you had.

The results have been fairly consistent. Originally, two-thirds said NO, today, it's three-quarters. Several of the comments and many of the emails I received on the topic stated they subscribed for the first year, but do not plan to sign up when the current term expires.

A common comment from readers was that they would be willing to pay for original content: articles, interviews, or test results, but they hesitated to pay for sites that are databases of reader comments or submitted material.

It will take at least another year to see how subscriptions on mid to small sized web sites are accepted. It will be interesting to watch!

Last week I gave my old SCSI ScanMaker flatbed scanner to a co-worker. In 1995, it originally cost me $750. I replaced it with a better Microtek for $99. Isn't technology wonderful! The kids use it for adding images to homework, the wife will scan a document she needs to fax, and I use it to retouch old photos. How about you? This week's Polling Place asks, "Do you own a scanner?"

Icons - Desktops: We have a great line up for you today, starting with (8) New Desktops, (3) New Icon Sets, and of course, updated "News From Around the Web". All on display for today's update.

In an ongoing effort to make it easier for you to send us your Icons and Desktops, we've designed a new Browser Based Upload Page for the task. Just follow the easy to use instructions, and you'll find submitting your artwork is now a piece of cake!

  • While searching for that ultimate OSX icon motif, Flax Creations came up with an interesting concept. Spot Icons Volume 1 features 17 different system level and application icons which get directly to the point. Most also include a small identifying text label, and these look their best displayed in larger sizes. Keep your eyes peeled for Volume 2, coming later this week.

  • Steff Koerner submits a very small icon set titled "Iconzilla", designed to replace the current and somewhat unattractive Mozilla Browser icon.

  • Aaron Schurman felt the need to create an entire set of Sponge Bob Props Icons, and share them with you. Aaron thinks Spongebob is one of the funniest cartoons out there, and hopes this little sea creature and his friends add some joy to your desktop! This is the third of three sets, and contains 22 icons for OSX.

  • John Rose took the hint, and has resupplied us with a raft of excellent new desktops hot off the press from his Celebrity Sketchbook. The first in this new series is titled Alias, and features the oh so sexy Jennifer Garner in 1280x resolution.

  • Matt Crowley continues to expand on his Beatles album desktop series with two more desktops featuring the fab four. As near as I can recollect, both Anthology and Beatles originate from early Beatles album covers, and both come in 1280x resolution.

  • P@trick D. Lawrence sends a snazzy desktop titled "Orbital" for your viewing pleasure. Created using only 5 filters... Gaussian Blur, Radial Blur, Polar Coordinates, Clouds and Wind, and without the aid of a lens flare or 3D program of any kind, this one comes in 1024x and 800x resolutions.

  • Our Landscape is the third of many new desktops to be displayed here by Alan Sherwood of EADesign. This one is described by Alan as a piece based on simplicity, showing us in our cages made of glass, those that bind us and shut us up, but don't make us realize we are trapped in a system that will not let us express ourselves, even to those closet to us. Comes in 800x and 1024x resolutions.
