ttpTechTool Pro 3.0.4 is now available. TechTool Pro is a very comprehensive diagnostic, repair, and maintenance utility. Last week a lite version of this program was released in case you missed it. This is one of the top three or four programs you should have for those times your Mac starts acting up! Changes in this version include:

  • Updated Virus database to find Simpson Virus/Worm.

  • Added over 100 new items to the Conflict database.

File Freak 3.3.1 is a bug fix update for this dynamic search program. This version eliminates Type 12 errors on older Macs introduced in version 3.3.

If you have been a visitor to ResEx since the beginning, you may remember that we use to have a monthly contest in appreciation of User Contributions. Starting next month, it's time to revive that tradition!

If you post work to one the following five sections listed below, you are eligible to win. At the end of each month, one of these sections will be randomly chosen and the most downloaded contribution from that section for the month will win. (For Snapshots, it will be the most viewed snapshot.)

  • Snapshots
  • Desktops
  • Icons
  • User Contributions (Splashes, MOSS, etc.)
  • Themes

The winning contribution will be determined using the very accurate Apache web server logs. Prizes will vary each month. The prizes for July will be announced shortly. So start putting together your snaps and contributions!

T.J. Mahaffey sent a couple of Applescripts to stick in your Apple Menu. Engine Of Regression is a folder action that assigns new creator codes to html and web image files. Renamerizer is add a prefix or suffix to a group of selected files.

George Rubio has gone to that big Photoshop Filter in the sky. In his last Will and Testament, he left the instructions for making transparent Dock pdfs.

  • Create a small transparent image only a few pixels square.
  • Printed to a pdf file from Photoshop.
  • Under Postscript Option in Page Setup I set substitute fonts, smooth text and smooth graphics to off.
  • Under Save as File in Print I chose
  • EPS Mac Standard Preview
  • Level 1 Compatible PostScript Level
  • ASCII Data Format
  • Font Inclusion All (Just a habit)
  • Destination File and Save... just to the desktop
  • Ran Acrobat Distiller and then used Screen Optimized.
  • I then made two copies of the file, renamed them and placed them in the dock resources folder.

Ok, ok. George didn't really kick the bucket, but it was a nice dramatic touch wasn't it?

User Contributed Splash Screens: by Michael Coyle

  • The best part of my job as a commercial recording engineer is that every now and again, I get to meet someone famous. For example, last week I recorded Johnny Bravo and Bubbles from the Powerpuff Girls. Today, Adriaan Tijsseling submitted MacOS X Boot and Login panels featured the freakishly strong, but oh-so-cute little girls.

  • Kai Rohwedder created a Dock Poof of the Smiling Mac icon.

  • After seeing how many readers downloaded his Explorer splash, Jayson Allyson made a Sunburst About this Mac replacement.

  • Doh! George Krueger accidentally sent an unfinished version of his way-cool Oak iTunes skin. If you were one of the dozens who grabbed the original, imagine how pleased you'll be with the finished product!

REALbasic Tutorial - Build a Caller ID Application (Part 1) by Erick Tejkowski

If you are anything like me, you have probably encountered an annoying telemarketer just as you sit down for a meal. Caller ID has helped to reduce this menace. With an inexpensive box, you can instantly discover the identity and phone number of the offending caller. But, did you know that your Mac can read and understand caller ID information too?

This week's tutorial is the first in a three part series which will show you how to build a simple caller ID (CID) application with REALbasic. (Continued...)

Stefano Ghielmi has updated his popular SpeedApp program to version 2.1.1. SpeedApp allows you to launch programs by using a search window and typing in part of an applications name. When you find the name you want, simply launch the program. This version fixes some bugs. A German version is also available now.

Interface Viewer 1.1 by Creative Box will allow you to view the elements of Themes or Schemes. You get the views of a finder window, dialog, alert, or utility window. Changes to this version include:

  • Registration Code is now required
  • "Enable All" and "Disable All" buttons added
  • Note and Caution Windows added
  • Better bevel buttons
  • Added placards
  • Added miniature Scroll Bars

Time-X 1.0 is a really cool clock for your desktop. It is skinnable! (Remember to submit them to us!) Here is what's new:

  • Added user guide to the help menu
  • Added user guide to the bundle so it's always available
  • Changing to/from 24-hour time is now saved to disk
  • Version numbers now appear more Mac OS X compliant in the Finder

File Freak 3.3 will list, open or move all your files based on dynamic search criteria. In some ways this is similar to SpeedApp mentioned above. There are hard core fans of both. Play with both and decide which you like better.

  • Built-in hot key to bring File Freak to the foreground
  • 2x improvement in launch time on Mac OS X
  • Meta data editor to change type, creator, and Finder flags
  • Column population is faster and more consistent
  • Text auto-completion with Tab key
  • Ability to delete invisible files and folders
  • Pref to ignore items in Trash

  • Allows dragging into folders

George Rubio figured out how to make the dock transparent without having the single pixel of white. While he will carry the secret to his grave, you can download the updated pdf files! :)

Updated: Add SoundJam's Applescript Dictionary to Classic iTunes.

Rather than copy the resources from SoundJam to make iTunes scriptable, Doug Adams says the commands were always there, you just have to access them another way until a dictionary is complete:

tell application "iTunes"
«event hookPlay» -- Play
«event hookPaus» -- Pause
«event hookStop» -- Stop
«event hookNext» -- Next track
«event hookPrev» -- Previous track
«event aevtejct» -- Eject CD
end tell

Doug knows his Applescripts. He runs two sites: Applescripts for Tex-Edit Plus and Applescripts for SoundJam.

If you drive a VW Bug and have a Dalmatian iMac, do I have an iTunes plugin for you! Take a look at Dave Goeb's FlowerPowerFlow plugin.

  • Belinda sends another of her great looking Interarchy Interfaces! This one is titled, "stoneHenge Mystic".

  • Backing away from the Aqua palette, George Krueger sends this iTunes skin titled "Forest" in subtle shades of green.

  • Tom Purtell created an About this Mac replacement called "lunar".

  • James S. Zakany was poking around with the FREE Strata3D and figured out how to raytrace primitives and show a floor. He cleaned up the resulting rendered image two ways with the EXPENSIVE Photoshop. "Primitive 2" is a somewhat de rigeur glob-above-tile-floor with a couple twists. The tile floor is translucent. The globs are not spheres. Some extensive lighting effects were added via Photoshop and comes in 1024x resolution.

Prefling 1.2.2 is the latest release of this Dockling by Amar Sagoo for accessing system preferences directly. This version fixes a warning one would get after upgrading to Mac OS X 10.0.4.

MacDICT 2.0 provides easy access to many databases including Webster's Dictionary. I use this program all the time. Changes in this update are:

  • Removed the Search feature because of copyright concerns, I might replace it with a plug-in system in the future
  • Removed and/or rewrote a lot of outdated code
  • MacDICT now supports UTF-8, as required by the DICT RFC

  • BabelFish works again

While I was not surprised that most readers have stereo audio in their TV, the 33% with surround sound was a shock!

13% of the televisions with mono sound may not seem like much, but it will be a large enough group to keep my commercial audio mixes mono-compatible. One in ten listeners cannot be ignored.

To the 8% without any television I must ask, how do you get by with Star Trek reruns?

There are a surprising number of choices if you want to use a carbon/cocoa web browser under MacOS X. This week's Polling Place asks which one is your favorite. Please don't email me to say I forgot to list a classic browser. I'm only concerned with readers who have run a native application in MacOS X.

Melissa has added 8 new sites to the ResExcellence Links page.

Every company makes mistakes, and Apple is no exception. AppleBlunders is a humorous site that tracks these corporate gaffes.

Add SoundJam's Applescript Dictionary to Classic iTunes.

One nice feature from the free version of SoundJam was its ability to accept Applescript commands, a feature missing in the classic version of iTunes 1.1.

Assign the following simple script to a Function key in the Keyboard Control Panel, and SoundJam would skip to the next song - without having to be the font application!

tell application "SoundJam"
next track
end tell

Since many of the same developers from SoundJam also wrote iTunes, could the Applescript resources from SoundJam be grafted onto iTunes? The answer is "Yes". (Continued...)

  • David Messick sent a great looking Dragon MOSS contribution that includes lots of goodies: some icons, a MOSS how-to, and a Red Dragon Tattoo. (I tried using the tattoo, but no matter how much I licked my LCD screen, I couldn't get it to transfer to my arm.)

  • Our own snapshot editor, Jeremy Hoesly, sends another About this Mac creation based on his photos. This one is titled, "Boat on Shore".

  • Jayson Allyson created a sunburst splash for Internet Explorer.

  • Here is the first of two cool Interarchy Interfaces created by Belinda.

Snapshots by Jeremy Hoesly

Let’s kick off the week with another round of snapshots:

  • The “Bubbles in Bubbles” desktop picture from our Desktop Archive debuts in this snapshot from Jade Barton. SoundJam, equipped with the Sony MiniAmp skin and WhiteCap visualizer, is kicking out tunes along the left edge. A smattering of icons from ResExcellence, Icon Factory, Xicons and icons.cx are also showcased.

  • Ben Mackin is handing his homework in early with this OS X screenshot sporting a “Think Different” desktop picture as assigned by Cletus on Friday. One shiny gold star for Ben!

  • Tim Mityok contributes this OS X submission featuring a recolorized version of the “Quantum Foam” desktop picture. iTunes is shuffling music in the lower right. Calvin & Hobbes icons from Xicons are scattered throughout.

  • This OS X contribution from Andy Moraitis sports RAILhead Design’s “Graphite Stripes” desktop picture. Selections from icons.cx’s Spiffy Apps collection are also present.
