Here's a very cool web site with satellite images of just about anywhere in the US. The amount of detail in my little cul-de-sac is amazing. Many of the images are two years old, but it's still fun to look at your home, or zoom in on your childhood secret hideaway.

High school student Brian DePalo has updated his site, ressource Mac. Take a look at his Boot Panels, Icons, and a few Applescripts.

Lots of readers wrote to say that you do not receive a Developer Tools CD when you purchase a new Apple Computer. When one purchaser called to complain, an Apple representative suggested he borrow a copy from a friend!

Glenn Matthews offered the best suggestion. Log into Apple's Developer site and join for a free account. When your reach the point in the form where you are asked which package you wish to purchase, simply log out. Your account has been created.

Log back in and select "Download Software" from the right sidebar. You will then see the latest Developer's Tools (May 2001 MacOS X Tools (All)). Be sure you have some grass to watch grow because the file is 136 MB.

Can anyone tell me what this says?

If you're a systems manager or involved with information technology, the must-read trade publication is InfoWorld. This week, one of the magazines most popular columnist, Ed Foster, covers the controversy surrounding themes and MacOS X. If you frequent ResExcellence, then "Apple Padlocks UI Door" is an article for you (plus your not-so-humble WebMaster™ is heavily quoted).

Going to New York for MacWorld? The be sure you have the new URL for the Hess Macworld Events Page. Maintained by Ilene Hoffman, the page lists all the parties and events that take place before, during, and after the convention.

Are you getting the Developer Tools CD when you buy an Apple computer with MacOS X preinstalled? A reader wrote to say it was not included with his new iBook (ships with both Classic and MacOS X). Since so many of the modifications posted on ResExcellence are predicated on the Developer Tools being installed, this could present a problem. During the beta stage of MacOS X, the Developer Tools were available online. I can not find a link to them now. If you have a link, or can comment on the lack of Developer Tools with MacOS X, please let me know.

Andrew Moraitis offers these three tips for speeding up MacOS X.

1. Disable your Ethernet Startup if you are not connected to an Ethernet network. This can be done through the System Preferences Panel. Choose Network and configure your settings by selecting “advanced” from the configure drop menu. Uncheck “Built-In Ethernet and MacOS X will boot more quickly.

2. Customizing your Global Preferences under the view menu can also be of help in increasing window-opening speed. Under the “Views” menu in the finder, select “View Options: and uncheck all of the listed default settings under “Global List”. I tried this and it helped accelerate window-opening functions.

3. When all else fails, get more RAM. I initially installed MacOS X with the default 128 meg of RAM that my G4 shipped with. I have since added and additional 256 meg and the performance difference is very noticeable. Keep in mind that the more physical RAM a Unix based system has, the less frequently it will need to access its vm swapfile. Fewer swap accesses translate into faster system performance. If you are currently using less than 256 meg of RAM, I would strongly recommend an upgrade to 384-512 meg.

In a fairly close poll, slightly more readers think it's a good idea that Apple no longer sells CRT displays. I'm a little concerned because ordering a computer directly from Apple (with an LCD display) will inflate the apparent cost of the purchase. This will provide ammunition to the PC-weenies who complain Apple's hardware is too expensive.

One favorable side effect is that it may drive more buyers to Apple authorized dealers like Smalll Dog and PowerMax (proud sponsors of ResEx!) where you can still order a Mac G4 computer with a CRT monitor.

Millions of dollars are spent each year developing betters ways for people to shave. :)
Last week, I received in the mail a sample of a new three blade razor. Do we really need three blades when a single one was good enough for Dad (and Mom!)? This week's tongue-in-cheek poll asks, "How do you shave?"

Normally, Cletus mentions software releases, but ResEx buddy Erik Barzeski has released a cool new cocoa app for MacOS X called iChem. It's a periodic table program with tons of information on each element. If your an educator, take a peek at it. Erik also runs CocoaDevCentral, a great site if you're interested in learning Apple's new programing environment.

Ryan Richards sent this little tip. Boot into MacOS 9 and open the following folder: /System/Library/CoreServices/Dock.app/contents/Resources/English.lproj/. Once you get to the Dock.app, you will have to use the contextual menu "Show Package Contents" to reach the contents folder.

Open the file called InfoPlist.strings
in a text editor
. It should contain a single line:
TrashName = "Trash";
. Change the word is quotes to rename the trash!

Linux Icebox.by Michael Coyle

Regarding my recent install on two Powerbooks of the new Yellow Dog Linux 2.0, Charles Bouldin had a couple of questions.

Does it support sleep? The older Wallstreet Powerbook sleeps with the supplied kernel (2.2.19), but the newer Pismo would only wake up correctly with the latest 2.4 kernel from Ben Herrenschmidt.

How well does MOL (Mac-On-Linux) run with it? How well is MOL running these days with MacOS 9.1? MOL runs on both Powerbooks. YDL 2.0 installs the latest version of Mac-On-Linux, which the works great with MacOS 9.1. One caveat, if you are going to use the 2.4 kernel with MOL, turn off "version checking in the modules" when you compile the new kernel.

I got this running under SuSe, with OS 9.04, but then problems developed with OS 9.1 and MOL, so I eventually abandoned it all and went over to OSX.After mentioning my easy install of Yellow Dog Linux 2.0, Jason Showers was the first of several readers to recommend the SuSE 7.1 distribution. What I found most surprising was Jason's comment that he bought it off the shelf at CompUSA!
