Today's News by Cletus Aladdin has posted an update to Spring Cleaning. Version 4.0 provides several new features. One of which is a complete redesign for Mac OS X. - CookieEditor allows users to selectively remove Internet cookies from their machines to save disk space, protect their privacy, and speed access to favorite sites
- MailCleaner finds unwanted and duplicate attachments hidden unknowingly by users' email programs.
- AccessMoniter, developed specifically for Mac OS X users, provides a quick and easy way for users to find files by their last access date, so they can later decide whether the files are still important to keep.
- QuickCompare, also just for Mac OS X, displays the differences between similar files, giving users an easy way to identify which files should be removed.
- Standard and Advanced Modes are two new user interfaces offering different levels of cleaning. Standard Mode helps guide users by categorizing searches via cleaning priority: Cleanup, Maintenance, Organize, and Internet. Advanced Mode provides access to all of Spring Cleaning's searches, giving an experienced user greater cleaning flexibility.
St. Clair Software has posted a new beta of Default Folder for public testing. Version 3.1.2b1 of this Open and Save dialog box enhancer, fixes a problem with Carbon applications that use non-Carbon plug-in's or system services. Additionally this beta resolves a conflict between Extensions Strip and the Default Folder CSM. Selznick Scientific Software, LLC has announced an update for PasswordWallet for MacOS. Version 2.5 still syncs great with the PalmOS version! The upgrade for the MacOS version is FREE to all currently registered users. - Entry count at the top of the window remains visible even if window is narrowed.
- Much smoother scrolling.
- Tab key now works in initial "Set Password" dialog.
- Password is not resaved to Keychain if it is not changed. This avoids multiple Keychain warnings from MacOS.
- Added note to "Ask Password" dialog if the master password was found in Keychain.
- Fixed punctuation and capitalization in status strings.
HexEdit 1.7.2 is out. HexEdit allows editing of any size file in hexadecimal, decimal and ASCII. Axel Wefers sent this simple terminal command to toggle a drop shadow effect on the MacOS X Dock. The effect is subtle and works best on lighter backgrounds.
To enable the shadow of the dock type at the terminal:
"defaults write com.apple.dock showshadow Yes"
To disable the shadow of the dock, again;
"defaults delete com.apple.dock showshadow"
Linux Icebox.by Michael Coyle
This week, I ordered and installed Yellow Dog Linux 2.0 on two Powerbooks (Pismo and Wallstreet models). Previously, I had always used LinuxPPC.
If the MacOS X installer is the Holy Grail, the King of Them All, an A+ no-brainer, then both major Linux installers have a little farther to go before reaching Nirvana.
On the Old World ROM Wallstreet, you need to run the Boot X installer and then boot into the Install CD. On the newer Powerbook 2000, simply holding the "C" key at boot starts the process off the CD.
To their credit, the YDL 2.0 is the first Linux install I've done that created a perfectly bootable OS when finished (on both machines). No post install tweaking to get to the desktop.
Which reminds me, YDL boots into KDE 2.1 not Gnome. I have always preferred KDE, feeling it is more Mac-like in its behavior.
If I had one complaint, it's that YDL resembles an Easy Install under MacOS. You have very limited options on the packages installed. There are instead broad categories such as Home/Office, Base, and Everything. Because I'm a little tight on drive space, I would have preferred a little more control to pick and choose.

Today's News by Cletus Moving quickly into June, I have noticed many more releases for Mac OS X. This is good news. It will definitely be an interesting time this summer. A note on the Icon Machine III website is letting all know that a minor mishap happened with the last update. When I first posted version 3.0b3, by mistake I uploaded a package that had the new documentation but the old version of the app. To everyone who downloaded it on June 2 or 3, I apologize. The correct version is now available. RBrowser 2.88 is now available for the taking. "RBrowser, for Mac OS X provides access to files on the local host as well as remote Unix systems with an easy-to-use graphical interface. RBrowser provides a uniform interface to distributed file transfer and file related operations, greatly simplifying access and use of files on remote systems scattered across the Internet. RBrowser uses FTP and SSH as transport." There are many new features and fixes in this version. A full listing can be found here. If you need a Spanish or French version of TinkerTool for Mac OS X, it is now available. This is a favorite program of mine. Localization to these two regions is the only change in version 1.32a. Back to Classic software with the release of Wapp pro version 3.2.1. What has been fixed you ask? - Fixed a display bug with the application-switcher-in-the-menubar
- Fixed a crash when closing the shareware-reminder alert
GMem! comes out of beta with the release of version 1.0. This little application will provide visual or numeric memory information in Mac OS X. It is clear, and in a more recognized format. What is new in this final version? For one, it is now in the ResExcellence Archive, plus: - Minor cleanup of the UI
- You now have an option to display Active memory, besides the options for Used or Free memory
- As the first non-beta release from G-Utilities, GMem! is being released as
Freeware - A glitch was in the earlier version which switched the used and free tags - this has been fixed Scheme News: Toren Valimir dropped me a note about the big update he has performed on his site. The theme of his site now matches his wonderful Kaleidoscope Scheme I/OS X. You really should drop by and check out the new site. Submit Software and General News Suggestions!

The folks at pkelleher.com have released a preview of Throbber Author. It's an Adobe PhotoShop Action that takes a lot of the grunt work out of creating a Throbber for Internet Explorer 5. Once your desired throbber frames are set up throbber author will automatically shrink them, line them up perfectly, and convert them into an IE 5 throbber film strip. While free, the software is "Beer-cap-ware". What the heck is that?
If you enjoy Throbber Author please send any beer bottle caps that you may have to the address below. The people located at this address are poor college students trying to spell the longest word in the English language across their ceiling with beer caps. That word is antidisestablishmentarianism. Please save them before they drink themselves to into the gutters of Cal State Sonoma. If anything, do it for our future generation.... do it for the kids.

Yes, I still plan on adding the "iTangerine" (the last on the "i" themes) this Thursday. Don't forget to stop by! ;-)

Polling Place by Michael Coyle
Regarding last week's non-poll, Yes.
Or was it No?
LCD displays are expensive compared to CRT. Apple, a company that has a reputation for building a premium priced product, has stopped selling CRT displays. This week's Polling Place asks, "Is this a good idea?"

Because I boot into Linux, Mac Classic, and MacOS X on a daily basis, it's a constant battle to keep my bookmarks in sync. With the latest release of Mozilla for MacOS X, I have a solution. On a shared HFS partition I have placed my master Bookmarks file. I then link it to the bookmark file for Mozilla in all three operating systems. Now, no matter which OS I'm using, my bookmarks stay synced.
Mozilla for LinuxPPC is so stable (it even supports the Java VM) I have stopped using Netscape. The MacOS X version is the buggiest, but is still very functional.
Jay Carlson posted some benchmarks comparing Linux under PPC and Intel chips. Intel had a better showing. He readily admits there are some flaws in the testing methods and after thinking about it, here are some benchmarks I think may be more useful.
- Perform a Find/Replace in a huge text document under KOffice.
- Use GIMP to run filters on a large image file.
- Copying thousands of files from one partition/device to another.
Tests such as these would provide a better sense of usability on the different platforms. If anyone has access to both platforms to try these benchmarks, I'd love to post the results regardless of who wins.
Updated: Using a Dedicated Swapfile Partition to Speed Up MacOS X
Andy's article on setting up another drive or partition for use with MacOS X generated a lot of email. Let me touch on some of the topics.
Matt Holmes was the first to point out this excellent Linux article on how to use a Mac HFS partition for swap, and then convert it back again. Written by Andrew Arthur from iMacLinix, the article outlines how to modify two scripts, one for startup that converts an HFS partition to swap, and the other to reformat it for HFS at shutdown. Since the HFS partition is obviously getting reformatted on every boot, you can't use it for much - but it's perfect for a shared swap partition!
The article's notes are based on the Debian PPC distribution. Below are my additions to make it work with LinuxPPC.
The startup script to modify is: /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit. Look for the following two sections:
# Start up swapping.
action "Activating swap partition" swapon -a
swapon -a >/dev/null 2>&1
action "Enabling swap space" /bin/true
and change them to:
# Start up swapping.
action "Creating Swap Disk..." mkswap -f /dev/hda16 2> /dev/null
action "Activating swap partition" swapon -a
action "Creating Swap Disk..." mkswap -f /dev/hda16 2> /dev/null
swapon -a >/dev/null 2>&1
action "Enabling swap space" /bin/true
Be sure to put in your partition numbers for the /dev.
The shutdown script is /etc/rc.d/init.d/halt. It reformats and renames the swap partition to HFS for use in MacOS X. Find the following:
# Unmount file systems, killing processes if we have to.
sig=
retry=3
And place just before it:
echo -n "Creating MacOS X Swap"
hformat /dev/hda16 2> /dev/null
hrename "Untitled:" "Swap:" 2> /dev/null
# Unmount file systems, killing processes if we have to.
sig=
retry=3
Again, be sure to put in your partition numbers for the /dev!
These script modifications worked great for me. You'll need to be sure the swap partition is at least 80M for the MacOS X swap file to be created.

After launching the above two dozen applications (plus the Classic Environment), MacOS X created 4 swapfiles using a total of 320M of disk space. I have 256M of real RAM. The system was very sluggish. Under LinuxPPC, I did the same, launching Mac-On-Linux and over two dozen applications. The system remained snappy and I only have a 64M swap partition. It appears Apple has a little more work to do in this area.
What is the correct size for swap files/partitions? Matt Wolanski, an IBM certified systems specialist, says IBM recommends the following formula for the calculation of swapfile space:
((RAM - 256MB) x 1.25) + 512MB
Readers have also asked about deleting the old swapfile to regain at least 80M of drive space. To do this, gain root access in a terminal and type:
rm -Rf /private/var/vm/
More information of swapfiles under MacOS X (based on NextStep) can be found in this article sent by Patpro (who also wrote this article on the topic).
Given all this (sometimes contradictory) information on swapfiles, it seems virtual memory may replace SCSI as the black magic of computers!

Hack your favorite applications with REALbasic by Erick Tejkowski Based on suggestions from ResExcellence readers, this week's tutorial will continue with the project started in the previous tutorial - Picture Extractor.
