Thomas Richard wrote in to tell us that he has created a new script for handling stuck CDs. It is called EjectMe! and it calls for the Finder to try and do it, and if that doesn't work, it invokes a powerful Unix command to get the job done. No guarantees are made, but at least it's something to try rather than lugging your computer to a service repair center. Unfortunately or fortunately I haven't been able to test it out, but you better believe I have downloaded in case I need it sometime. Thomas is also the creator of Change Startup Disk which is at version 1.3 as of Thursday.
Angelo Scicolone has updated AliasMultiplier X 2.5 for French localization. It now means that AliasMultiplier X is available in four different languages: English, Italian, German and French. More are planned for the future. A public thank you goes out to Sebastien Pennec for this version.
A Better Finder Rename X by Frank Reiff is now available for downloading. For those not familiar with the program, it is a CMM to quickly batch rename multiple files. Wonderful CMM. Besides containing a few bug fixes, it also allows file names to be based on the date and time of the last modification or the creation of the file.
ShadowKiller 1.2 is the newest version release from Unsanity Software. As the name indicates, ShadowKiller removes shadows on menus and windows in Mac OS X. It is a freeware Haxie and as Brian writes, includes the following changes:
- Toggle all shadows when the application is launched, and immediately quit - for smoothest possible integration with Login Items and less clicking around!
- Screen is being refreshed on all monitors.
- New icon.
Alchemy Labs has announced the release of Pulldown Folders. It is a combination Contextual menu plugin and Preference Pane, which will allow you to gain faster access to files on your hard drives and other volumes. There are several short movie clips on the website demonstrating it in action.
Pixel Tester 2.0 now supports multiple monitors. It will now ask you at launch which one you want to test. The AlphaOmega Software website now includes and English section for us. Pixel Tester will help detect any dead pixel on screens or LCD displays
AlphaOmega Software have also released the next version of Type And Creator Changer 2.0. The major change apart from the site changes mentioned above include a feature that accepts file drag and drop almost everywhere. Included on each edit field and each push button, thus helping in its ease of use.
Ilan Szekely has posted edition 2002.5 of Type/Creator Database. It contains the type/creator codes for most applications and totals 42,265 entries in the database. It dovetails nicely with Type and Creator Changer listed above. The software is listed in our archive.
Two different beta testers have written me about this program Net Tool Box, and although it is not GUI related, it is from a new site and young gentleman trying to get something started, so what the hey! Check out the Duwawa site and especially the program called Net Tool Box which the beta testers really feel has a lot going for it.

Let's call it like it is folks. It ain't MacOS 10. It's MacOS "X". Why? Because Steve Jobs calls it an "X" server, not a 10-server. Nothing personal against the ancient Romans, but using the X designation from a marketing stand point was dumb. The last thing you want when launching a new product is to have an ambiguous name. So can we all agree it's the letter X and not the number 10? I didn't think so. :-)
A reader sent me a new MacOS X theme that he saw posted in the MacNN forum. It's listed as a beta by rgoer with a final version due soon. I have been running it for several days without any problems, so visit the Theme Archive and grab your copy of Chosen OS X Beta.

Creating and using .term files to set individual Terminal window prefs.
by Matt O'Hara
We know that the Terminal application in MacOS X has a lot of preferences. You can change the window size and shape, opacity, location, title, default shell, font size and type and color, and more. But did you know that by using .term files individual windows can have their own predefined preferences? In fact you can have a library of window settings, each one specific to particular uses of the Terminal. (Continued...)
ResExcellence regular BloodFly has hung out a shingle on his own web site. Here you can not only find the stuff previously posted on ResEx, but tons of other goodies like Audion and Music Matchbox skins.
Lawrence D'Oliveiro sends this tidbit about the AppleDVD Player...
After looking at your patch for getting versions 2.0 and 2.1 of Apple's DVD Player to run with MacsBug installed, I was trying to come up with a similar patch for the current version (2.7) of the Apple DVD Player.
Imagine my surprise to discover that no such patch is necessary. Instead, try this: make sure caps lock is down, hold down command and control (don't touch option and shift), and launch the Apple DVD Player. This will activate its built-in bypass of its check for MacsBug. Simple as that!
Unfortunately, my lovely new G4 iMac will not seem to run earlier versions of the Apple DVD Player, so I don't know if this was a recent feature addition, or whether all those older patches were in fact unnecessary.
Hoo-Haa! A new version of ThemePark, the premiere application for creating themes on Mac OS X, has been released. This update sports a completely revamped pxm# editor that allows multiple images to be edited simultaneously and drastically shortens theme creation time. Also, the background color in the pxm# editor now stores transparent and patterned colors, and the individual frames of a pxm# resource now appear with the proper aspect ratio. (After you make you beautiful creation, be sure to send it to the ResExcellence Theme Archive!!-MC)

File Manipulator 2.0.2 is the newest version of Chaotic Software's solution for moving, copying, renaming, or changing type/creator/attributes. It works with Mac OS 9 with CarbonLib or Mac OS X 10.0 and higher. This version fixes a couple of bugs, and is now available for download.
GraphicConverter X 4.4 is out from Lemke Software. As with all of the GC releases, it contains a large supply of updates and feature enhancements. It also means the server may be busy for a day or two for downloading.
Brian Bergstrand has posted a new version of his terrific ChangeDesktop program. He mentions that it is written in Cocoa, completely free and the source code is available for you to download if you so desire. The changes to this version he lists as follows:
- The ChangeDesktop and ChangeDesktopPreferences have been merged
into one bundled application named: ChangeDesktop.
- The program now supports multiple monitor setups.
- Provided Menu Extra, Remote Access and Publish Desktop network features.
- Added support thus allowing you to change the Finder's placement option. For example; Tile, Fill Screen, Center, etc.
- Lots of little feature additions and bug fixes are also included.
Readers have often recommended this piece of software UnCoverIt. UnCoverIt will auto generate very nice labels for your personal CDs, Zip disks, Jaz disks, Orb disks and many more types of media. The next beta is available for download and is at 1.4b8. The complete update listing is included below:
- Is now a self contained package, that includes all templates and helper applications within an single icon

Icon Machine 3.0b18 is the next beta release from Uncommonplace Software of their excellent software for creating and editing custom icons. Primarily a bug fix release, it does add an Export Icon command. The program deals easily with all icon sizes from 16x12 Mini to Mac OS X's 128x128 Thumbnail.
MKD Software re-wrote the code in their System Optimizer X before releasing it as version 2.0. The results are an estimated 30%-60% better optimization, automatic schedule, improved feedback, results logging, and a new interface. As has been the case with more and more Apple hosted sites, the page may be down due to bandwidth overrun.
MacAmp Lite X 1.0.0 renamed to MaltX is now available for Mac OS X only. It arrives after a complete rewrite of the original, with many updated features, but still fully skinnable In fact all previous 200 plus skins work. By using Malt Mixer, you can create even more skins through a three step process.
Jerome Foucher continues to improve his very popular A-Dock software for Mac OS 8.5 - 9.X. He writes: Version 2.8.2 adds a "Quit All" command in the contextual menu of the Finder. It will now properly dim the applications' icons when the commands "Hide Others" and "Show All" from the Application menu are used. You will need to restart for this function to work properly.
Forums can host a great wealth of information. Sometimes however you can learn more by going to the source of your problems.... sometimes! Now I could go off on a tangent (but I won't) about the difficulty of navigating/searching the Apple Knowledge database. (I refuse to talk about it) Sometimes I can find what I am looking for. Almost always though I have difficulty. I believe it was designed by the Mensa folk Mike mentioned previously. Unfortunately I don't fit into that group. Is this why I find the Knowledge Base totally useless 90% of the time? This summary page is a breath of fresh air? (see, I told you I wouldn't digress)
Now this has to be a useful tip. "The smell of burning leather"

Yesterday, Cletus mentioned a utility named ResPloder. It splits the resources out of a file into individual items in a folder. Could this technique be used to make it easier to change the splash screen in Photoshop 7? Well of course! If you remember from the previous edit, the new Photoshop 7 splash is stored as a PNGf resource. After opening the package, you can drag the Classic (or X) application onto ResPloder. Deselect all the resources but the PNGf and change the create code and type then Explode it.! Then find ID 2197 in the PNGf folder and replace is with your new version of the splash.
After placing the new splash in the folder, use ResPloder to Implode the folder back into ResEdit resources. Then continue with the original edit and use ResEdit to copy the PNGf resource back into the Photoshop application.
If you want to email photos from within iPhoto, you have to use Apple's Mail program. Simon Jacquier's iPhoto Mailer Patcher is a hack for Apple iPhoto allows you to send pictures directly from Entourage, Eudora, Mailsmith, PowerMail or QuickMail Pro.
After mentioning that Mac artists may want to consider releasing their icons as PNG files for use under Linux, Mathew Eis let me know of his great little utility called Icon2PNG 1.0. It converts both the mask and images from MacOS X .incs files, icns resources, and classic resources to PNG images. This makes it a snap to make Linux icons!
A long time ago, ResExcellence mentioned an auto-response AIM bot named SmarterChild. Last weekend, my daughter used it to quickly find information on a movie she wished to see. Look at all the information she retreived by tryping a few lines.

Charles Srstka, creator of the wonderful Pacifist program, has released the next beta of another nice program, DockDisks. He refers to it as a " hack that causes disks to auto-mount in the Dock." While Mac OS X allows control over where the Dock will be placed, you still have the desktop Hard Drive default to the right side as well. It can get a little crowded between the Dock and the drive icons. This helps alleviate that problem.
This beta fixes a bug that caused the removable media ejecting feature not to work on machines other than the authors, so it should now actually be possible to drag disk icons off of the dock to eject them, provided that the disks are removable media or servers. It loads as a preference pane.
ResPloder explodes a Macintosh file into a folder. The data fork becomes a file called data.frk. The resource fork becomes a series of folders with each folder a resource type. Inside each folder are files containing the data for each resource of that type. The newest version is 1.6.
- Scriptability: ResPloder understands the verbs "explode" and "implode".
- Better handling of resource types with special characters.
- Ability to set default file types and creators for exploded files.
- New Window menu.
SpeedMeUp by NoName Scriptware has been updated to version 1.2. AppleScript updates prebindings so applications launch much faster.
NoName Scriptware has also updated Change Startup Disk. This version includes easier instructions for using a passwrod, a Deluxe and Original version and optimization of code to make the scripts even faster. The deluxe and original version are set up to work with partitioned versus non-partitioned drives.
Another great CMM has been updated for Mac OS X. This one is called With It X, by Bubble Pop Software. It allows the ability to open a document using an application other than the one that created the document. This would be an extremely useful feature. There is also a Classic version available.
The popular Folder Icon X has been bumped to version 1.1.7. Folder Icon allows you to make customized folder and document icons by placing another icon on a standard plain icon. This update now allows you to export the icons as pictures by using "Export As Picture" command in the File menu.
One World in a Mac have announced the release of version 1..0.1 of their Type/Creator code changer software MacCT. Additionally it handles documents and bundles. Give this new software a try out!
The Kaleidoscope Scheme Archive has posted 6 new and 7 updated schemes. Still some activity at the old scheme archive after all.

Polling Place by Michael Coyle Me and my massive brain. | |
I needed a shovel to dispose of all the B.S. after last week's Polling Place! Come on, if results are to be believed ResExcellence readers could comprise the nations largest local MENSA Group. :-) There were some humorous and angry posts on the topic in the forum. If you took the free web based IQ test, do not proudly mail the results to your Mom. A real IQ tests takes several hours and includes hundreds of carefully picked questions. Even then, there is ample evidence that IQ results are flawed. As you can see from my picture, I told the truth when I clicked the "Above 146" button in the poll.
For the curious, the generally accepted breakdown of IQ is:
Average: 85 - 115
Above average: 116 - 125
Gifted Borderline Genius: 126 - 135
Highly gifted and appearing to be a Genius: 136 - 145
Genius: 146 - 165
High Genius: 166 - 180
Highest Genius: 181 - 200
Beyond being measurable Genius: Over 200
At Apple, flat is where it's at! These days, the computer maker only puts its name on LCD displays. If you want a good old, radiation throwing, Cathode Ray Tube display, you'll have to buy it from a third party. As a longtime Powerbook owner, I'm painfully aware that the color spectrum of an LCD is not as large as a CRT. With a user base heavily biased towards graphics professions, it seems odd to me that Apple only offers LCDs, but perhaps marketing surveys have shown most professionals bought third party displays anyway. What about you? This week's Polling Place asks, "Which display type is on your main computer?"
