Today's News by Cletus The Extension Overload Giveaway has come to a close. Thanks to all who entered. I will announce the winners on Monday. Two full days remain for you to try your luck in the Extension Overload Giveaway. Considering the simple format of the contest, there is really no reason to not give it a shot. Remember to also give Jeremys article on Extension Overload a good going over. Wapp pro 3GM is now available. There is only one known incompatibility and that is with Action Menus. Wapp pro displays a menu that lists the windows of the front most applications, the background applications and their respective windows in submenus. - Wapp pro has been entirely rewritten to be much faster.
- Wapp pro can now track changes of windows from applications that are in the background.
- If an application is hidden, Wapp pro now dims its icon, like in the applications menu.
- Added a new exclusion list: applications, that when switching from, prevent auto-hiding.
SysMenu 1.0.1 from the Macintosh Developer Center is described as the "only menu you need!" SysMenu has submenus, plugins and customizable options. "You can now launch any application, document, control panel, or use one of many plugins in any application, including the Finder." - Version 1.0.1 fixes random crashes
- Now works with Mac OS 9 Multiple Users
- Mac OS 8.6 user can now use SysMenu
Malia Software has posted version 2.2 of Simple Browser. Simple Browser is a simple but powerful tool to manage files in a way similar to the NeXT OS on your hard disk and across a network. This version adds the Option-Drop shortcut to copy a selection of files and provides an increased speed and stability fix. Maury McCown has posted another wonderful synopsis at RAILhead Design about his experience with OS X 4K73, which he installed on a Revision A iMac. Considering the machine used; it sounds very promising on all fronts. I myself am still holding off on 9.1 because of potential sleep problems, especially with my iBook. Does anyone have experience with this? Scheme News: Desktopper has posted a ton of K-Schemes for you to pick over. Some of them are very unique designs. Submit Software and General News Suggestions!

A friend of mine who recently purchased a Powerbook Pismo called to say he noticed something interesting in the System Profile report. Under Memory, one of the chips was 'starred' and marked as slower. I searched Apple's TIL archive, but can find no mention of this. Do any of you know the significance of this? Is this causing a performance bottleneck?
Like most of us, there are not enough hours in the day for Nicholas Shanks. For quite awhile, he has been working on ResKnife, a more powerful replacement for ResEdit. He's looking for developers who might wish to help create editors for the utility. It uses a shared library system where editors are loaded dynamically. His goal is to have a new version ready to release with MacOS X. In order to work with MacOS X, the program has been completely rewritten. So if you think you can help, drop him a line.
Two Faced Mac has posted a Tangerine iTunes skin and one new MOSS.

Icon/Desktop News 03-09-01 Icon & Desktop News by Dan I thought it might be a good thing to post this section for one more day, and give you all an idea of the update schedule and workings of the Icon and Desktop News section. Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday nights this section is prepared for posting the following day. Submissions that come in before the early evening on those days generally gets posted providing there is space for them. - You just have to love Josh Bishop's wry sense of humor about most things. The latest creation from his "desktop dump" is titled "CarWash" and is aptly named. It will certainly remind you of what it's like driving through, you guessed it, a car wash in 1280x resolution.
- Developing the habit of dozing in front of your computer? Then you might need to install the latest "Don't Sleep OS" desktop by Soulrocka Nasty Nene to keep things lively. Comes in 1024x resolution.

Theme News by Michael Rabe
Gamma!

Hello everyone I have some good news from the theme home front. That sleeping giant MacThemes.org is starting to wake up. They have updated their site with new information and a new section called OS X. Hmmmm. That just goes to show you themes may never die. They have the section up but they are waiting for the release of Mac OS X before they do anything with it. Just seeing it gives all the theme makers hope once again.
I well be releasing the long anticipated theme "Vortex" Monday. It may be my birthday, but you are the one that will be getting the gift. Today I am releasing a Preview of another new theme of mine, "Gamma". It is coming along just great and should be in the release line-up soon. Check back for updates!
As you may or may not know I have been working on a theme for MacOS X myself. The new theme is based on the "Classic" Pastel theme that has already been released (you can download it from the Theme Archive).

He is another snapshot from me to hold you over until Jeremy is back on Monday. This one shows my LinuxPPC desktop running gnome.
It features a transparent terminal over a desktop from NASA. The mp3 player XMMS is running in the lower right. The remaining window in the gnome PIM.
One of my favorite features in most Linux window managers is the ability to dock running applications in the menu bar. Classic MacOS allowed some of this (the clock, Global Village modem status), and the Control Strip comes close, but it's nice to have a 48x48 or 64x64 icon applet running in a dock displaying internet throughput, memory usage, or cpu load. MacOS X has shown that it's dock can do this (the battery and clock applets), and I hope more developers jump on this opportunity!
Today's News by Cletus Keep the entries coming for the Extension Overload Giveaway that we are running this week. Let's not forget either the wonderful article Jeremy has written on this software product. There is still plenty of time to get entered as the contest runs until the end of the week. St. Clair Software has updated Screen Catcher to version 2.3.1. Describe as a quick fix, this update corrects a bug that prevented Screen Catcher from launching in versions of the Mac OS prior to Mac OS 8.6. If you experienced the following error, Interfacelib--FetchFontInfo could not be found this is the fix you need. They also fixed a problem with the email scripts that produced errors when trying to send snapshots to Outlook and Entourage under Mac OS 9.0.4. iView multimedia ltd. has released version 1.0.4 of iView MediaPro. "You can use iView MediaPro as a media browser and organizer, media presentation system, or as a drag & drop palette side by side with your favorite media editor, multimedia scripting system, or HTML authoring application. Advanced users can organize and annotate media files, print reports, keep version backups, and export them in several different formats." Kanzu has updated OnceDaily to version 2.1. Using OnceDaily you can run startup items only the first time you turn on your Mac each day, and not every time. Akio has posted three more really cool A-Dock Skins. Which are available at his site. For additional A-Dock Skins, stop by the official archive at Jerome Foucher's site. | | | | Sharp Graphite! | Sharp Tang! | Sharp Indigo! | Rage Software has posted the next version for Macintosh Explorer. Creative Mac has written an excellent ResEdit tutorial on modifying Photoshop filters. It allows you rearrange and resize the preview dialog boxes. It reminds me of a previous ResEx edit that we did to rework the FreePPP window, but I never though of applying it to Photoshop filters!
Two Faced Mac has posted two new MOSS, two Desktops and an iTunes skin
If you have an iDisk web site, Mark Woodward mentions a great use for the TMDC Droplet Builder. During a normal ftp uploads, the Macintosh resource fork is left behind, so file sizes are kept relatively small on the server. On an iDisk hosted web site, you upload your files via Appletalk - and that preserves the resource fork.
Web servers don't care about the resource fork. They ignore it, but it still uses valuable space on you iDisk. Creating a TMDC Droplet that strips the resource fork can save you a lot of disk space. The more small files you have, the greater the savings, and the files will upload faster.
For example, the ResExcellence logo at the top of this page is only 12.2K, but the original GraphicConverter gif with custom icon and preview resource is 50K!
Distributed.net has released a new beta client for the Mac. The latest beta is version 2.8013.467. There are a number of changes in this build such as better yielding when running ogr, an altivec ogr core, temperature sensing, bug fixes and more. So if you're part of Team ResExcellence go grab it and crunch keys faster. If you belong to another team, stick with the older slower software. :)

Jeremy is on vacation this week. In a small attempt to satisfy your appetite for snapshots, I have posted my current MacOS X desktop.
Click on the preview to open it another window. The Audion skin is f1 by Paul Johnson. Most of the disk icons are from Derek Gordon's set. The MacOS X theme is from Akio (now banned). And the dock is DragThing 4.0 (I'm a beta tester). Desktop picture is a BlueskyHeart creation and the terminal is editing the Hosts file in pico.
In Monday's Terminal Tips, Rob Griffiths caught a mistake. For du and df in MacOS X, there is no -h option, it should have said -k, which displays the contents in the more familiar 1k blocks versus the default of 512k.The original article has been updated. Thanks Rob!
Today's News by Cletus I had a very nice week off. I even managed to squeeze in 9 holes today in the beginning moments of what is certain to be our worst snowstorm of the season. I know I should not have gone now, as I am now very sick. Oh well, carpe diem. Today begins ResExcellence's three straight weeks of giveaways. We are coming into March like a lion, and I am really psyched about it. Let's start off with a giveaway and a review of the same shareware program: Extension Overload. Jeremy, our resident software reviewer has written a terrific article on Extension Overload to help kick off the giveaway. Stop by and read all about the program, then enter for a chance to win one of three free registration codes supplied by developers Teng Chou Ming and Peter Hardman. Jérome Foucher continues his march toward perfection with A-Dock 2.3 as it reaches final candidate 2. If you were one of the unfortunate ones running 8.5 or 8.6, you noticed that the spring-loaded menus didn't work. This has been fixed. This version should also fix the "Too many items" problem when browsing the favorites folder. Noah Pepper Software has released version 0.4.2 of Invisible Prefs. It seems everyone at one time or another needs to find an invisible preference file. This program states it will help you to do this; "Find, show, make copies of invisible items in your prefs folder." I have not tried this program out. Please be careful when working with anything that is meant to be invisible on your computer. Noah Pepper Software have also released another application I will be trying out and that is How Long 1.0. This little application will keep track of how long your computer has been running. I am going to try this out on my iBook, since I rarely shut it off, instead opting for sleep mode. Themes and Schemes: Desktopper has posted several very nice previews of K-Schemes by author Daisuke. Over-9 and OZ-6 are two very well done schemes that deserve you attention. Polling Place by Michael
Is 42% enough of a favorable opinion to positively affect the bottom line? We will have to wait for Apple's second quarter results to find out.
This month, Apple releases MacOS X, or is it really MacOS X Beta 2? Reports state that the OS won't support DVD Record or Playback. C/Net says, "The Mac OS X development team also has flagged a variety of bugs, some causing system hangs or freezes, in the Setup Assistant application, which helps people configure their systems. While the glitches "may affect user experience," sources said, the team has deferred fixes to later versions."
This week's Polling Place asks, "Should Apple release MacOS X in an unfinished state?"
Tools of the Trade by Michael
Another half dozen sites have been added by Melissa to the Links Page. Check them out and send her your suggestions.
Circle March 22nd on your calendar because that's the day TLA Systems Ltd. will be releasing DragThing 4! This new version is a carbon application that runs native in either MacOS 9 or X. Some of the new features include:
- Completely rewritten Aqua-ready user interface with new Preferences and Options windows.
- Multiple levels of undo for many actions.
- Support for true 128x128 icons, even on OS 9.
- Support for tool tips to show the dock item names.
- A new feature to repair all missing dock items in one go.
- Many new dock appearance options, including greater font and style control.
I've been beta testing this for half a year, and with the loss of a hierarchical Apple Menu in MacOS X, DragThing 4 is a must-have utility.
DragThing 4 will be $25 shareware, but if you register the current DragThing 2.9 this month, it's a free upgrade. If you registered awhile ago, it's a $10 upgrade. This is the first time there has been an upgrade fee since the release of the program was released in 1997. Here is another screenshot of the future version.
MacInstruct Tutorial has another new article. Ric Getter, the author of Making a TechTool Pro Boot Disc says, "I took what I learned from a very frustrating experience trying to create a bootable TechTool Pro CD from the recent update and put it into a step-by-step guide. The minimal instructions in the TechTool manual leave out a couple of critical steps. This should be fairly timely because the 3.0.3 update was just released last week."
Micahsoft has released ButtonMaker 2.2. There are almost two dozen button templates.
Of the many new features, my favorite is the ability to add a drop shadow to button text.
Fontosaurus Text has added two new fonts today. Sabot Round ( a grunge family font) and Derailleur (styled on the Shimano derailer!)
Terminal Tips by Michael
In MacOS X, Linux, or Darwin, if you would like a quick idea of the free space on your drives and partitions, try the command line program df. It quickly displays the number of total bytes on a partition, the number used, and the percentage of space used.
In MacOS X, add the option -k to df for to see the disk space in the more common 1k blocks versus the default 512k block size.
Under Linux, the option -h displays output is a more 'human' readable form. The program will append M (megs), G (gigs).
Linux output from df
[coyle@www coyle]$ df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sdb7 484M 46M 413M 10% /
/dev/sdb8 2.9G 1.1G 1.6G 41% /home
/dev/sdb10 1.5G 972M 508M 66% /usr
/dev/sdb11 2.9G 1.9G 846M 70% /backup
/dev/sda6 1.3G 824M 455M 64% /mnt/home
/dev/sda7 486M 397M 63M 86% /mnt/root
/dev/sdb6 500M 275M 225M 55% /mnt/mac
|
Another useful utility is du. This displays the space used by each directory in the given path. The option (-s) provides a grand total for the directory, and use -h (Linux) or -k (MacOS X) again displays the output in more human friendly terms.
Linux output from du -sh
[coyle@www /]$ du -sh /home/coyle
2.8M /home/coyle
|
Because MacOS X hides so many directories from the user, command line utilities like df and du can provide you with a much better idea of hard disk usage. To find out more options for both programs, type man df and man du from the command line.
