Today's News by Cletus The contest is now over. There are three more days left for you to get your snapshot submitted for the Can Combine Icons contest. Full details are available on the contest page. It is the one time at ResExcellence when submitting a snapshot may win you a prize! Let's not miss out on this opportunity! The very popular Iconographer version 2.3 has been released. First released to handle 32 bit icon and resource editor, it also works on PC and Mac OS X icons as well. - Additional navigation and selection commands
- Documentation additions
- Mac OS X performance and user interface improvements
- Other bug fixes and tweaks
Brian Wilson from Unsanity wrote in to announce the update of four of their very popular shareware programs for Mac OS X. These updates fix potential conflicts with other 3rd party utilities such as MaxMenus and Default Folder X. These updates also include various minor fixes and enhancements. You are encouraged to update to these new versions. Updated items include: File Buddy X 7.0b23 is an extensive desktop and file/folder editing and task tool. Currently under beta testing, the company is requesting users try this out and report back on any bugs. Dock Switcher 1.01 allows for multiple Dock configurations. Recently released and now updated, this version has the following changes. - Now Up To 15 Docks in the Dock Menu
- Fixed issues involving hidden files being listed as docks
Pocket Dock is a utility to organize and launch applications, documents, web links and email addresses. Version 2.41 is a maintenance release that fixes a bug that may prevent skins from installing properly. PocketDock is an easy-to-use launcher utility to organize your applications, documents, web links and email addresses. This update is free for all registered users. A free 30 day trial version is available. WorkStrip X 10.0b2 is a File management launcher. With this update, it is now possible to have items that are book marked System-Wide, as well as having Workspace specific bookmarks. Additionally, WorkStrip can now preview Microsoft Office documents (See read me for details) and Workspace Exporting has been implemented. Anything that can be done to stop Spam, gets a tip my hat. RAILhead Design has put together an AppleScript to do just that. From the homepage: "SpamReporter is a Mac OS X AppleScript designed to work with Microsoft Entourage from Office v10 . When you receive a Spam message (or messages as the case may be), simply select the message(s) and then choose SpamReporter Script from Entourages script menu." I have two computers (well, O.K., three but I do not consider the Dell Laptop a computer) an iBook Graphite 466 SE, and a desktop G3 266. I run Mac OS 9.2 on the desktop and this machine is the one I use to update ResExcellence. The iBook I carry with me almost all the time and it contains all of my work files for the college and hospital. I run Mac OS X exclusively on it. On those rare occasions when I need to start up Classic my dark side comes out. Bob Levitus has written an article to help cure my "dark side" and it is called: "Dr. Mac's prescription for making Classic run better, faster, and more reliably." Have a Press Release? Tools of the Trade. by Michael Coyle On the advice of people "In the Know", I purchased and installed SuSE Linux/PPC 7.3 last weekend. At $79.99, it's almost as much as MacOS X, but I was curious to see if there would be a major difference between a larger companies distribution versus some of the smaller companies I've tried. The biggest thing SuSE has going for it is YaST2, Yet another System Tool. For years under Linux I became use to editing text configuration files, but with YaST2, just about every major config option has a UI on it. It's darn close to the MacOS X System Preferences application, right down to the automatic software update. Like all Linux distributions, SuSE has trouble keeping up with the latest hardware releases, so I wasn't surprised that the Radeon video wasn't immediately supported on my Titanium Powerbook. After a comprehensive install from the eight CD SuSE collection, I manually updated to XFree 4.2 and, after a little playing around, created a working XF86Config file. It's hard to say right now if it was worth the money versus the less expensive YellowDog Linux, but it seems that I'm having more success compiling source code. If anything interesting develops, I'll report it here. Installing XDarwin using Fink under Darwin by Steven Molloy Installing XDarwin on Mac OS X 10.1.3 is not as painful and complex as you may think. This tutorial will walk you through the installation of X-Darwin so you can start using your Unix/Linux applications side by side with MacOS X. First thing you need to do is go to Apple's Developer site and download and install the December 2001 Developer Tools for Mac OS 10.1 from Apple. Then download the latest version of Fink, a package manager for OS X. Pay attention to the instructions on the download page... (Continued...) Parole Vane at desktopper.net has updated the great looking MacOS X Theme, xenogenesis. If you have Duality, it can be downloaded via the LiveTheme update. There is a group at Mozilla.org that is taking the code base and reworking it into a Cocoa browser application for MacOS X. Titled Chimera, this fully quartz rendered version of Mozilla is F A S T! The latest version 0.1.3 is now available for download. It contains support for security (SSL, HTTPS, etc.) as well as support for alerts and user/password prompts, and some more crash fixes. It still needs a lot of work, but looks like it's going to be a beautiful piece of software.

If you contribute a file to any section of ResExcellence, you could win a PowerMax gift certificate worth $50 ! (How?) - When I was a kid, the scariest monster in the world was the "Creature from the Black Lagoon". - A great looking Giant MOSS from tuchemetallica is in the archive.
- Flax Creations sent a Boot Panel titled Mac Rise.
- Conrad bellies up to the bar with two classy creations. The first is a MOSS of a firey scene from the top of a house, and the second is an About this Mac replacement of a lonely set of train tracks.

- Perhaps you've seen Ali Larter working a whipped cream bikini in Varsity Blues; in the horror flicks House on Haunted Hill and Final Destination, and then again....maybe not. Fortunately, Jonathan Gurule` provides us with opportunity to get an up close and personal desktop view of this beauty in 1024x resolution,
- Many of you might relate to Quinn MacDonald's clever "Being forwarded" desktop. Inspired by Quinn's quandary, this one comes in multiple resolutions.
- After getting a new 17" Studio Display, Joel Crawley noticed that weren't many desktops available these days in 1280x1024 resolutions to go with it. (poor guy) With that in mind he created the stylish and colorful "Super Nova" desktop, which comes in 1280x resolution.
- Proudly show off your community colors with "Undulating Pride" by Jamie McCanless. Available in 3 different resolutions.

The top five winners will be featured in Jeremy's Snapshot section at ResExcellence. Download the software today and "combine" some icons, submit your creative snapshot to the author and you may be selected for a free registration. This is pretty cool! "The Pixelators" Akira and Gabriel at Electric Icon Land have made me an icon to be used at times in my news! Thanks guys! ResExer's, head over to their site and I am sure you will find something you can use yourselves. MoonMenu 1.8 is a Mac OS 8.1 or higher program that adds a moon in the current lunar phase to the menu bar. Why is this cool? Well if you ever worked in a hospital or related field, you would know that when there is a Full moon, it does in fact affect people. This way I know when to call in sick! :) Changes to this version includes: - Future dates are now displayed in days:hours:minutes from the current date.
- Fixed problem with incorrect quarter predictions in the MoonMenu global system menu.
PasswordMaster X 1.5.2 is a serial, registration, and password storage/creation tool. From the RAILhead Design page: "PasswordMaster will help you easily store and organize all your software serial numbers, registration codes and passwords so there is no more file cabinets filled with printed email messages, no more note pads all over the desk, no more writing numbers down and then shuffling through piles of paper to find the right code." Desktop Resetter 2.8 will save and restore the position and size of the Finder windows/icons. This runs in Mac OS 8 or higher. Changes in this release are: - Added Applescript support (see included Scripts folder)
- Added eSellerate engine for quick registration
- Added setting under settings->extras allowing the user to disable the 'remember' snapshot sound
Dock Switcher 1.00 allows for multiple Dock configurations. "Use the Dock Menu to switch docks without leaving the app you are working in. You can do this by control-clicking, or right-clicking on the dock switcher icon while it is running. Never be limited to one dock again." Changes include a new Icon and a more intuitive Dock-Menu. Memory Usage Getter 2.0 [mentioned last update] has been updated. I really like this software and it is now even better. MUG will graphically displays memory usage for open processes. The last update I included an image that looked like this of MUG. This time you can see what the program looks like now to the right. - User interface is more compact
- Separated processes into 3 tabs for easy viewing: "Open Applications", "Other User Processes", and "System Processes"
- Via new forward/backward buttons, you can once again see the memory usage of any process
- Implemented an overall memory usage progress bar that is always visible (click on it for a neat little hidden feature)
- Added a timestamp to the window so you know exactly when this memory usage snapshot was taken
Proteron MaxMenus 1.0 will add "powerful, flexible menus to simplify tasks." From the read me: "MaxMenus is a brand shiny new utility that adds powerful, flexible menus to simplify using Mac OS X. Always available in the corners of your display, the menus offer unparalleled ease-of-access to your most commonly used applications, documents, folders, volumes, preferences, and... well, you get the idea." Tools of the Trade. by Michael Coyle Click for larger image in a new window. | While working on a professional ProTools digital audio workstation, I was impressed with a feature that allows you to import a Quicktime move as a track to lay along side the audio for easier syncing of audio elements to picture.. You can't edit the movie with ProTools, but placing sound effects, dialog, and music is substantially easier than with iMovie or Final Cut Pro. Plus ProTools has all those great reverb and compression plugins to fully tweak your audio mix. Then a light bulb lit up over my head (really it did)! How many of these features are supported in the FREE version of ProTools? It surprised me to find out all of them! Imagine a situation where you create a great iMovie, but the sound track is complicated and iMovie's audio capabilities are not up to the task. For example, making a decent music edit in iMovie is nothing more than hit-or-miss. You could print your project to a Quicktime movie for use as a work picture in ProTools. After sweetening the audio in ProTools, bounce the audio mix to an AIFF file for importing back into iMovie. Now your project can win an Academy Award! Once again, something nice from KDE-Look. There is a simple tutorial on how to create glassy icons in the Aqua style, and this second one shows an additional way to do it. Melissa, the youngest of our staff members and my lovely daughter, has updated the ResExcellence Links page with eight new sites. In addition, she has checked every link and removed any that have fallen by the wayside. If your site's not listed, use the form on the page to let her know about it.

Then bundle them up and send them on over for world wide display. Thanks! - How about a few tasty "Apple Bytes" from Scott Chitwood? This small but delicious set of 3 OSX icons were originally part of Scott's awesome Pixelpalooza entry, but due to the contest rules, they have had to strike out on their own, and would look awful good on your desktop.
- Dedicated Star Trek fans will appreciate "Borgcons Vol.2" by Flax Creations. Based on the somewhat cryptic Borg symbol language and font, this is the second of 3 sets made for OSX. Just in case your not into Star Trek, you probably will enjoy the high tech look of these 15 cool icons anyway.
- "Sandy Beach" by Michael Addison of Macalodeon is the first of many really fine 3-D compositions we will have the good fortune to be posting. Michael uses an amazing variety and range of software to achieve his effects. This one comes in 1024x resolution.
- Bound to become a net classic, as it undoubtedly will circle the globe, "Terminate" by Patrik B. pretty much speaks for itself! The picture used of Bill Gates was taken in 1998 in Belgium, just moments before an unidentified "assailant" planted a cream pie into his face. If you hadn't already guessed, this desktop is based on the popular Terminator films , and comes in 5 different resolutions.
- The talented Zack Schnepf returns with another excellent desktop creation titled "Night Gate". Download this powerful backdrop in 1024x and 1280x resolutions.
- Skeeter submits a stylish two picture Desktop set to dress up your monitor. Unfortunately, the preview doesn't give you a very good idea what these are about, so you may wish download them and take a closer look. Both come in 1024x resolution.
- Oh so sweet Country Singer "Faith Hill" makes a guest appearance on another page of John Rose's celebrity Sketchbook. It appears that John was quite taken with the Diva, as he has provided us with not one, but three different desktops to choose from, all in 1280x resolution.
- Will Ernst, steps out into the world of 3-D desktop making with his first ever "Play Series". Featuring two nicely done Bryce renderings, both which come in 1024x resolution. Drop will a line to cheer him on to create even more cool images!

Today's News by Cletus Today we launch another great contest at ResExcellence. The very popular Can Combine Icons. Can Combine Icons by Infinity-to-the-Power-of-Infinity allows Mac OS X users to create impressive customized icons within minutes by using icons and artwork already available. The simple yet powerful, interface scales beautifully and is fun to use both for the novice computer user and the desktop customization freak. Now is your chance to win one of 5 available free registrations. To coincide with the Can Combine Icons contest is the announcment that the program has been updated. Version 2.1.0 provides a good dose of improvements and bug fixes. New features can be found bleow and the homepage contains the a list of bug fixes. - Pasting of pictures as well as icons
- Several new disks, and the Aqua standard document added to the Library
- New documentation using Help Viewer (Help menu)
- 8 bit icon is saved for compatibility
- Option to save obsolete icon resources for compatibility with older systems
- Flip through the icon lists using the arrow keys
- Visual feedback indicating drop locations
- Unlimited Undo/Redo support
- Tool Tips and other major interface changes
uControl maps your control key to it's rightfully intended place on your laptops keyboard; the place thats currently occupied by the oft-unused caps lock key. The update has been repackaged for easy install, and the program now works with a variety of USB keyboards. Also remaps the enter key next to the space bar (on the TiBook anyway) to an open-apple/command key. MOX Optimize 1.7.5 will configure hidden options and accelerate Mac OS X. There were many changes to this version, including adding compatibility with Mac OS X 10.1.3 Memory Usage Getter 2.0b2 provides one of the first (IMHO) useful memory usage interfaces for Mac OS X. You actually are shown the names of the applications running instead of some obscure text. - Now has a TRUE graphical user interface, thanks to AppleScript Studio
- Can refresh memory usage without relaunching the application
- Can display only memory usage of top 17 memory-using processes (this will be fixed later)
| | | Click image for a full view of my iBook reading. | Spellbinder 1.0 provides GUI for the update_prebinding CL tool. From the author: "Spellbinder runs the update_prebinding command line tool. I made this to make using this command easier than running it from the Terminal whenever I needed to do it, such as when disk images begin to mount slowly or if I desire to free up RAM." Prefling 1.5 is a dockling for accessing system preferences directly. The update now lists third party preference panes in the local, network and user libraries. A much requested feature. Pic2Icon is a program that creates beautiful 128x128 Mac OS X icons for your pictures. Simply drop pictures or folders full of pictures onto the application and it will start creating icons. Changes to version 1.2 include: - Drop Shadows, even for arbitrary shapes!!!
- Dog Ears!
- PDF Support
- Quicktime Movie Support (.mov)
- Dutch Localization
- Significant speed improvement processing through files
Pet Peeve: When some inspiring person creates a new GUI application to perform a function in Max OS X only to be ridiculed in (any) forum by some other person saying that you can already do this in the Terminal window. Well DOH! I doubt this is the point. Many people could care less about command lines. I know I have typed about two lines in terminal and quite frankly find the information useless for my needs. If you prefer terminal then use terminal. If you prefer the GUI format, then use this. Have a Press Release? Software or General News? Submit it here: Suggestions!
Polling Place by Michael Coyle This last poll what a surprise. I would have expected half the readers made the move to MacOS X, but the fact that 20% don't even use it at all was a shock. In the forum thread and through emails, the most common complain was slow video on G3 computers. Still, Apple users appear to be upgrading faster than Windows users. The ResExcellence web server logs tell me that most Wintel users still run Windows 98 and NT! The recent Federal Court ruling that overturned an FCC rule limiting the amount of media outlets a company could own in a single market will make the next few years interesting. In Chicago, the media giant is the Tribune Company which owns a popular radio station, broadcast TV channel, and Cable news outlet, and a major newspaper. The old rules that barred their ability to gobble up additional outlets have been removed. It makes you wonder how power will shift in the future. This weeks Polling Place asks, "From which company do we have more to fear in the future?" (If you pick "Another", please let us know who you think it is in the Forum thread.)
Tools of the Trade. by Michael Coyle At first glance, it looks as if modifying the appearance of Mozilla is daunting task, but once you turn the key and open the door, you can customize any aspect of this XUL rendered browser. For starters, let's change the throbber. Mozilla ships with two skins that can be selected from the View-->Apply Theme menu: Classic and Modern. I prefer the latter, so we can start by making a copy of the theme file, located in the Chrome folder in the Mozilla application folder. Find modern.jar and make a copy of it. This file is a zip archive containing all the images used to render the look of the Mozilla skin. If you need a Zip/UnZip utility, you can take your pick from a VersionTracker listing. After unzipping the copy, you are left with a folder titled skin. Work you way down to the folder called brand as shown below. There are two GIF images in the brand folder: the "At Rest" throbber and the animated throbber. Using your favorite graphics application you can create your own, or (lucky for Mozilla users) all of the preview images of the Explorer throbbers in the ResExcellence archive are animated gifs that will drop right into the brand folder! You just need to pick a frame and make a single gif of it. If you are the adventurous type, browse the folders and images with in the Modern skin and you will learn you can customize any aspect of the browser's appearance. Mozilla provides a tool to make this easier, but unfortunately, given the rapid pace of Mozilla development, the theme tool has lagged behind. KDE-Look.org posted a cool Matrix desktop.

- It isn't a Budweiser frog, but Eloy Duran sends a cute Boot Panel with a green little hopper.
- Nicole Lenz sure has a pair of pretty green eyes! You can see them in the MOSS and ATM combo from Conrad.
- If you own Disk Tracker, Stephen Horlander created an Aqua styled replacement splash.

This set includes 13 realistic looking pieces of digital technology to add to your collection.
- Hippie Jack thought that since OSX incorporates so much of NeXTstep, there should be a little more of NeXT in the interface. With that in mind, he made a single but great looking NeXt folder Icon in the briefcase style.
