Wapp pro 3.5.1 is a quick fix update to the new version announced on Wednesday. Drag and dropping anything onto DragThing's palettes when they were set to float above all other windows didn't work. This has been fixed.

A Better Finder Rename 4.4 is a CMM to quickly batch rename multiple files. Works fast and nice. This update allows the original file names to be saved to a document for future reference. The new release also features a significant rewrite of the internal architecture of the product.

The fabulous "haxie" FruitMenu has been updated to 1.5.1. Probably what Apple should have included in the Mac OS X system, but these guys have it covered very well and probably better. Full listing of changes can be found below.

  • Fixed a bug causing file icons disappear in Finder if Hotkeys Prescan depth is set to 2 or 3 levels.

  • Fixed a bug causing FruitMenu to crash on startup.

  • Startup Items check is smarter now, will automatically fix entries pointing to an older version of FruitMenu.

  • Added Japanese localization by Kaori Saegusa and Dutch localization by Hans Dobbelaere.

GIFfun 3.1.6 is a cool little drag and drop tool for quickly making animated GIFs. Full details on the program can be found on the homepage.

Renicer 1.1.1 is a graphical utility to automatically set process priorities. It is "designed to run in the background, it automatically prioritizes whatever application is in front. Additionally, it ups the priority of the Finder, Dock, and Window Server." Renicer has been updated for compatibility for Mac OS X 10.1.3.

hexeditorHexEditor 1.3.2 is a hexadecimal file viewer/editor.

  • Updated the localization (more complete)

  • HexEditor is now available from any app through the Services menu

  • Corrected display bug for the ASCII column

  • Localized help added

  • New website!

Dockprefs 1.0.2 will allow you to open preference panes from the Dock. This has been updated for Mac OS X 10.1.3, and recognizes more prefpanes.

Story for weekend reading has to be this; "Microsoft Program Tracks User Info." What is Microsoft so paranoid about? They track this, they track that. You can only use one of their programs at a time— user information is secretly embedded in this or that document. If an individual was this paranoid they would be sent to see a shrink!

Yeah it was short and sweet, but it is my birthday [38]— and I am taking some time off this evening to relax. Have a great weekend and talk to you again on Monday!

Conrad tipped me off that the Boot Panel Template for MacOS X wasn't the correct size. It seems it has changed a little as the OS has been updated. I put together a new template file that contains a layered Photoshop file and a JPEG.

A great little utility for Powerbook owners running Linux is PBButton. It allows you to use the keyboard volume and mute buttons and can even put up a display. If you apply the kernel patch, it will also put up a display for screen brightness.

Being a grumpy old man, I must agree to often criticizing some of the bonehead decisions from Apple Computer (opps, I did it again). Well this time they are trying to do "The Right Thing". Each year Apple conducts the Apple Design Awards Program where developers can win the latest Apple hardware. This year, the Cupertino company has added a new category for "Best Mac OS X Open Source Port". And the prize? An "Ultimate" Power Mac G4 system with an Apple Cinema Display (22" flat panel). Not too shabby. We will never see an award like this from Redmond.

We have seen these pictures before in ResEx snapshots, but now NASA has posted very high resolution composite images of the earth in darkness and in daylight. Built over the course of a year from thousands of true-color photographic images, these are amazing images of our planet. If you have the time and bandwidth, download the 27M versions.

Are you trying to get your QPS Que! USB CD burner to work under OS X? George Krueger offers the following:

"Those of you who are trying to use a QPS Que! USB CD burner under OS X, I've got a solution for you. I took apart my Que! and stuck the drive in a Fire Wire enclosure. It works swimmingly under OS X (10.1.3).

The enclosure I am using is an ADS Technologies Pyro, so it's the only one I can vouch for, but I would guess that any Fire Wire drive enclosure should work.

Two caveats with the Pyro: One, the CD-R drive does not completely fit inside the enclosure. Two, I have to boot the computer, then turn on the Pyro enclosure and then plug the Fire Wire cable into the Mac to get it to be recognized. It has to be timed just right. This is with either the CD-R or the HD in it."

Be sure to visit George's site and peruse his collection of iTunes skins, Desktops, and more!

If you have traveled through airport security, you know it is no longer enough to have your Powerbook x-rayed. Every laptop must be removed from its bad and hand inspected. When I went to Macworld, I was surprised at the number of passengers who would have walked away without their computer if airport personal had not reminded them. AEChadwick spotted this humorous sign at the Denver International Airport. I always though it was "Got Milk?"

  • MacOS & MozzOS have teamed up in this pair of Mozilla splashes from Bill Hughes. Their is one for Mozz under Classic and MacOS X.

  • Yikes! Conrad sends three About this Mac splashes featuring Playboy Bunnies from the 1960's. Don't worry Mom, they're rated PG-13.

  • Mark Grace had to leave Chicago to be on a World Series winning team. Eddie Mathews created a MacOS X Boot Panel of the World Champion Arizona Diamondbacks! Spring (Training) is in the air!

  • If you're into Motorcross, Tracy Bieneman has a Photoshop splash you may want to checkout! Titled "Motoshop 6.0", it features a collage of sport bikes.

Friends, Mac-aficionados, comrades to the cause, lend me your mice. A new submission dropbox is in town. That’s right boys and girls! Now you can upload your snapshot submissions from within your web browser — no FTP client required. Just go to our new Upload page, and see how easy it is to contribute your 2¢ worth to the Mac community.

Friday brings another round of snapshots:

  • Timothy Croak sends this snapshot showing off MOX Optimize, a handy-looking memory utility. iTunes is shuffling soundtracks at center, and ICQ manages chat sessions along the left edge.

  • Icon Archiver, a utility for storing icons in a single file, is the star of this screenshot from Exsanguination featuring an “Aqua Button” desktop picture and Wagpage’s WP Aqua X K-Scheme.

  • This snapshot from Howard touts a custom “Star Trek” desktop picture. iTunes, tweaked with the Spinning Beachball visualizer, churns out many a mesmerizing pattern in the upper left.

  • The familiar “Mac OS Default” desktop pattern and the Classic Platinum Theme are showcased in this OS X contribution from Casey Smigelski. Interesting.

Icons - Desktops: We've got (6) New Desktops, (2) New Icon Sets, and of course, updated "News From Around the Web". All on display for today's update!

Announcements:

In an ongoing effort to make it easier for you to send us your Icons and Desktops, we've designed a new Browser Based Upload Page for the task. Just follow the easy to use instructions, and you'll find submitting is now a snap! Just to entice you a little further, contribute a file to any section of ResExcellence, and you might be lucky and win a PowerMax gift certificate worth $50 from our monthly drawing.

In cooperation with the folks at the Iconfactory, the ResExcellence Icon Archive is proudly offering permanent homes for any and all Pixelpalooza 2002 contest entries. Looking for more exposure? Then bundle them up and send them on over for world wide display. Thanks!

  • Talk about a drool-factor of 10. "Glass V" by Paul Sahner of DV Graphics is so sharp you'll worry about cracking them. Included in the set are icons for hard drives, servers, iMacs, home folders, user folders, app icons, library icons, and really cool folders. And this file is much smaller than Glass IV was. So what are you waiting for? Download it now!

  • Hand drawn by DIGITALX Workshop a.k.a. Brien Edick, "Doodlecons Vol.1" includes 15 fun and funky style icons for use with Classic, or OSX.

  • Pablo Pinasco submits what I consider an extremely fine desktop composition titled "Coral". Full of all sorts of cutting edge graphic style, this one is available in 1024x and 800x resolutions.

  • "Ambitious Lemon's desktops" by Gregg Mendez, is a must have series of 5 different free form "interface" backdrops. Today we are previewing "MtDesktop(white)", the fourth in the series, available in 1024x resolution. Download this one direct from Greg's site, or look over the other new desktops you find there, and choose your own favorite.

  • Using one of Apple's most popular default OSX backdrops, Mario Garza builds an "Aqua Frame" to set it off. This elegant and useful desktop includes several modular docks, blending well with the Aqua interface in 800x and 1024x resolutions.

  • Conrad had a few frames left to shoot on a photography project, and so decided to have a little fun with the remaining film. Packing a handful of plastic Army Men and trusty camera, he went to the back yard and posed the little soldiers in different ways. But, his fun was cut short - it was only a roll of 24 and he thought it was 36 exposures. Doh! This just for fun desktop comes in 1280x resolution.

  • John Rose adds pop singer and lead vocal "Andrea Corr" to another page of his celebrity Sketchbook. The Corrs are a truly unique phenomenon in the global music industry, the band is comprised of three sisters and their one brother, all in their 20s. Their music blends traditional Irish folk styles with 90s studio production and each member of the band is involved in the writing, playing and, even, singing of their tremendously successful brand of pop. The desktop comes in 1280x resolution.

  • Fontaine L sends us a sweeping landscape shot of the rugged California Coast. Taken somewhere in Northern California, south of Monterey on the Pacific Coast Highway, this dramatic photograph comes in 1024x resolution.

News From Around the Web:

Ethereal Creations updates with two strikingly different desktop images rendered in Poser4 and Bryce5. This release spans the range from the classical to the surreal, so head on over and check those guys out!

IconBuilder ProIconBuilder Pro 3.1 is available. If you do not already know, it is a Photoshop plugin for creating icons in both Classic or OS X. If you are into making icons, this is the tool to get. " The filter comes in two versions - IconBuilder Lite and IconBuilder Pro. Jerome writes: "People asked me to include drag and drop support for the "application-switcher in the menu bar" and I told them that I will never include this feature. As we say in French, "never say never". So, now for your pleasure, Wapp pro 3.5 includes drag and drop support." This version is also guaranteed for Mac OS 9 to 9.2.2.

Keyboard Maestro 1.0.2 provides a user with Hot Keys. A real time saver! "It is an essential utility to perform many different tasks simply by pressing a few keys."

Adium 1.5 is a great 3rd party AIM (AOL Instant Messenger) client. It has become my default Instant Messenger under Mac OS X. There are many changes that take place with each update. I recommend visiting the homepage to track them.

It is February and in Pennsylvania that usually means snow. Not this year though, at least not yet! <Knock on wood> I went golfing today in 50 degree weather. Most people I know have been out a couple of times already this year. Will the weather continue to be nice? [95]

This is a big day for ResExcellence!! Today we unveil our new Browser Based Upload Page!

  • No more ftp client.
  • No more slow email attachments.
  • Now you can use any browser to upload your creations to the ResExcellence server!

So if you have created some cool desktops, icons, splashes, or taken a snazzy desktop snapshot — anything that may be of interest to readers, use the form and we will post it ASAP!

Almost 100 readers were kind enough to send me a quick snapshot of how ResExcellence renders in their browser on their computer. The information was invaluable! As I received images, I updated the html code and saw it reflected in the next batch of snapshots. After doing this throughout the day, ResExcellence now will render virtually the same across browsers and platforms. Thanks to those who helped out!

By the way, if you are still running an older version of Mozilla, grab the latest release ASAP to see a better version of ResExcellence. The older ones render links that overlap text.

While on the topic of Mozilla, as part of the tracking on the bug submitted two weeks ago, I received this email:

"Anybody who has stumbled upon this bug..I kindly request you to please try this fix with today's build and comment in the bug only if you think this is *not* working. I will verify this too. Thanks!!"

And in fact, the latest build of Mozilla does fix the bug where setting the disk cache to zero would break the Flash and Quicktime plugins. It was amazing to watch the process unfold and see the effort that went into fixing just this one bug!

X Themination has posted three new themes for MacOS X: Brushed, Classic Platinum, and Square Aqua. Of these, Classic Platinum (pictured below) is my favorite in the group!

  • A few weeks ago, Conrad send a great looking splash for Eudora featuring Milla Jovovich. Today, he sends the image adapted for Entourage.

  • Eddie Mathews created another nice Boot Panel. This one displays the subtle image of a red Apple.

  • Today's About This Mac splash from Conrad would right at home on my mother-in-law's computer. It features her adopted city of Las Vegas.

  • Mike Fifield’s “Inferno” desktop picture and Takashi Izawa’s DSX Theme are showcased in this contribution from Sean King. Selections from Mac Axonz’ Polished Stones icon set, Icon Factory’s World of Aqua 3 collection, and Pixeljerk’s Xbuttons lineup are scattered throughout.

  • "Ziggy" and company make their way onto the net as OSX Icons. Brought to you by Matt Harrington, this cheerful set of comic strip icons includes 7 different characters.

  • Rabid Star Trek fans will appreciate "Borgcons Vol.1" by Flax Creations. Based on the somewhat cryptic Borg symbol language and font, this is the first of 3 sets made for OSX. Just in case your not into Star Trek, you probably will enjoy the high tech look of these 15 cool icons anyway.

  • COoLLaY took the official Windows XP Desktop Picture and the very popular "PissXP image " found right here on ResExcellence, and merged the two together to make "PIssonXP". This updated version of an outspoken sentiment comes in 800x resolution only.

  • "Ambitious Lemon's desktops" by Gregg Mendez, is a must have series of 5 different free form "interface" backdrops. Today we are previewing "Valley Desktop", the fourth in the series, available in 1024x resolution. Download this one direct from Greg's site, or look over the other new desktops you find there, and choose your own favorite.

  • "Apple in Motion" by Conrad began as an experiment and became something quite interesting. The image used is part of a photograph he took a little while back. Conrad blurred and enhanced the original image to achieve the effects he wanted. The light white and yellow curves were created from rasterized text layers, then distorted and bent to match the curve of the apple. Pretty cool! Comes in 1280x resolution.

  • Not only does the digitally talented Zack Schnepf make fine desktops, but does an awesome job with a digital camera as well. Take a look at this beautiful panoramic night shot of Portland Oregon's Waterfront, and you will see what I mean. Comes in 1024x and 1280x resolutions.

  • Paul Kuehn of Renaissance Design returns with "Rendesk 7" This gorgeous other worldly desktop makes pleasing use of the current version of Corel's Flame Fractal Photoshop filter, and can be downloaded from Paul's site in several different resolutions.

  • Inspired by the telecast of the "US Open 2001", Fontaine L cobbled together this stylish collage featuring all your favorite tennis stars in 1024x resolution.

Today's News by Cletus

Let's go one more day! Just a quick reminder that I will be getting the names of the winners of the Super Get Info contest from Bare Bones Software on Tuesday. If that is the case, why not let the contest run one extra day? It will. The contest page will be active for one more day. I guess I can say for sure that this will be your last day to get your entry in.

It was a slightly quiet weekend on the GUI software front.

Black & Bleu 5.0 is now available. The program provides information on error codes, causes on the most common errors and possible cures. 5,883 Mac OS error codes with Apple's brief descriptions, all 30 PostScript errors and all Sad Mac error codes. Hard to believe there could be that many errors.

TinkerToolEveryone's favorite, TinkerTool has been updated to version 2.1. A primary change to this version is that it now comes with an automatic installer. Additionally, there is new reset button allows users to reset preferences not only to Apple's defaults but also to the state they were before using TinkerTool 2.1. Several other changes have also taken place. This is a really nice program and adds the ability to change a ton of items with Mac OS X. A full list can be found at the homepage.

Default Folder X 1.0 from St. Clair Software is now available. This is a long awaited feature for Mac OS X. "Default Folder X attaches a toolbar to the right side of the Open and Save dialogs in any Carbon application. The toolbar gives you fast access to various folders and commands. You just click on the buttons to go to your favorite and recently used folders, manage the folders and files shown in the list, and make changes to your settings."

Icon Brush 2.0.2 is an AppleScriptable, icon editing program for Mac OS X. This version fixes a small memory leak and a bug which caused the floating palettes to appear when you opened a editor window regardless of weather you had previously closed them.

dockDoubler 1.0 is another in a line of multiple Dock programs. dockDoubler allows you to switch between two Dock in this case. "dockDoubler simply makes a copy of the default Dock (the Dock in use) and allow the user to switch between the two Docks."

Flurry ScreensaverFlurry 1.1.4 is a very popular screen saver that uses OpenGL. It now has localization into several more languages. There is an attempt being made to port it to iTunes as well. If you have any ideas on getting this concept to work, feel free to contact the author. The program is postcardware.

On another good note, Spring Training began for the pitchers and catchers for most teams. Yeah I know... the link is a set up to the Phillies site. You are all Phillies Phans aren't you? wink emoticon

Polling Place by Michael Coyle

Come on gang! Trust me, other OS platforms wish they had speech capabilities like those found on the MacOS. I cant believe only a quarter of you use it!

Don't you wish to experience the dulcet tones of Victoria (High Quality) as she reiterates the text of all the messages from your AIM chat windows? Or the wicked Agnes as she proclaims, "It's not my fault..." and speaks the text of your latest error message.

Perhaps I like Apple's speech because the constant interaction with these female doppelgangers allows this hen-pecked old married man to at least believe some members of the opposite sex still find him interesting.

MacOS X is now the default OS on all shipping Apple Computers. Except for a few high end software packages (Photoshop and GoLive, for example) the average user has everything needed for a satisfying computer experience. How about you? This week's Polling Place asks, "What percent of your time is spent in X?"

What it looks like for me.

I have seen how ResExcellence renders in just about every browser and under MacOS, Linux, and Windows; yet I often see reader snapshots of the home page and it looks nothing like I had planned.

I would like to ask you to send me a quick snapshot of the ResExcellence home page as it appears on your browser. This will help me get an idea what others are seeing. If you want to be really nice, save the image as a heavily compressed jpeg before emailing it. Thanks.

While looking for his KDE/Linux icons, I found BUGz Files. In the Gallery section are a dozen beautifully rendered landscapes and futuristic cityscapes that can be resized for beautiful desktops.

The Operator has updated his great looking System REI collection! This comprehensive makeover includes: 2 new variations on the System REI desktop: Crystal REI, and the brand-new Crystal Resonance desktops; 4 new icons, and more. If you set Crystal Resonance as the background, change the hard drive icon to Rei's iris, then snap finder icons to grid and increase icon size to max, the hard drive icon blends in perfectly with the background!

  • Mathew Bice of IheartNY.com sends us a whole set of "Radio Head Icons" for OSX. Featuring icons for every member of the band RADIOHEAD, a few graphics from their albums, plus a couple extra Thom Yorkes for good measure. The band members will thank you for the download.

  • Leo Bridle is throwing a Party, and your Mac is invited! The dozen Classic sized guests included in "Party Icons" have come in fancy dress, and are just begging to be used all over your computer!

  • While most will agree that the new OSX Aqua style Folders are easy on the eyes, and look good against almost any colored background, Apple appears to have forgotten something. No longer can you priority label your folders with different colors. Enter "Flavored X Folders", a low tech solution by Flax Creations to the problem. This set simply includes a dozen different Aqua style flavored folders to compliment different color shemes and other uses.

  • "Ambitious Lemon's desktops" by Gregg Mendez, is a must have series of 5 different free form "interface" backdrops.
