Running Mac OS X? Tired of trying to "Get Info" on two or three programs at one time, only to have the information provided in just one window? The same window! UGH! Here is my advice— try Super Get Info from Bare Bones Software! There is a free Demo available. Try it out today. Then go to this page and answer a few questions and you just may get it for free! That's right, the Super Get Info contest is just that simple to enter.

Glidel 5.2.2 allows files to be dragged and dropped on items in the File or Apple Menus. A very nice little addition to a computer. Several changes and fixes are included with this update. If you use this extension, please update.

Dick SwapDockSwap1.3.2 is the latest release of this program that allows you to switch between multiple Dock configurations. "Extends the usefulness of the OS X Dock. Allows you to save different Dock states, for easy access to all of your files/docklings/folders. DockSwap is most useful when added to your login items via 'System Preferences"/"Login'." From the read me; "Now the unregistered version allows up to 3 saved Docks and I split regular and Background (no dock icon) versions into separate downloads."

Narattaphol Charoenphandhu has a hot little program on his hands called Launch Items X 1.0.3. It makes great use of Contextual Menu plug ins and saves tons of time. Must try software! Version 1.0.3 has the following changes:

  • Added the ability to open a web page and e-mail address from a contextual menu.

  • Added the ability to open a folder from the contextual menu.

  • Launch Items Editor X now creates a web location and e-mail location from the "New Web Location" command.

  • Localized text in the Navigation Service dialog boxes.

  • Now supports five languages— English, Japanese, French, German and Dutch.

ClassicSurvey 0.3 is in beta testing currently and provides information about the current state of Classic. For instance, is it active or not, or how much memory is it using. The information is displayed in the Dock, but can be displayed in a floating window as well.

Ah yes! the great Instant Messenger debate. AOL IM in Mac OS X works sporadically for me still. I see someone else in the Forum is looking into replacing AOL. For Classic, I can recommend AIMM. For Mac OS X I find Adium is superb. I spoke with its developer, Adam Iser about implementing speech and it is planned. One extremely nice feature is having all messaging happen in one window with tabs allowing you to select from. I never use any instant messenger client to transfer files or download, so you are all on your own in this regard. I find both of these programs work for me when AIM fails. The only drawback for both is lack of speech which I really rely on.

During the week I spend most of my time on the internet dealing with ResExcellence subject matter. If I come across an interesting article I bookmark it to read on the weekend. This is one reason why I typically try to post an article for the weekend I think you may find interesting. One article I plan on reading this weekend can be found at the REAL Software site called: "What is the difference between Carbon and Cocoa and should I even care?" It is written by Geoff Perlman, CEO, REAL Software, Inc.

Have a splendid weekend!

Tools of the Trade. by Michael Coyle

Yesterday was Valentines Day and over on Slashdot.org, something very sweet took place. CmdrTaco used his web site to propose marriage to his girlfriend. Well, I guess it's better late than never for me because I also have an announcement for the special woman in my life. Maria, after all these years together, I just have to say, "Honey, I want a divorce!"

What if she doesn't read the web page?

I have been a very busy beaver reorganizing the behemoth known as ResExcellence. Section by section, I'm using the site features of GoLive to fix broken links and regrouping the pages into new directories for better 'behind the scenes' management. If you follow a bad link, you will be deposited at the new 404 page. Please drop me a quick email so I can fix the problem. Thanks.

For Mozilla users, there has been some activity in the theme department. XUL Planet is the default site for themes, but it's often better to get more recent versions from the designer's site. Pictured below is Wood. Lo-Fi is also a nice, simple theme for Mozilla. At this link, you can download two new replacement splash screens for Mozilla. Just open the Mozilla application with ResEdit and paste the new splash into PICT #512.

The Astronomy Picture of the Day recently posted a beautiful Nebula that you can resize into a great desktop picture.

Hysterion started a great thread in the forum on how to hide those annoying (dot) files created my MacOS X when you are booted into MacOS 9. While there were many utilities suggested, the best solution seems to be a simple terminal command that you can learn about here.

  • Seb Carley sends a first of a kind contribution to ResEx: a set of 6 pictures to be used in the Finder Windows of MacOS X (or with Window Monkey in Classic Mac). Seb also sent a Desktop Snapshot to show how nice the images look on his desktop.

  • Space Invader sends his/her/its first iTunes Skin. It's got a nice industrial look and I can dance to it, so I'd give it a 10.

  • David Atkinson took all of Apple's current hardware and laid it out in a nice collage for a MOSS and matching ATM combo.

  • A batch of About This Mac replacements arrived from Conrad. A cute pair titled "Army" show plastic green army men protecting his backyard. The second pair is a colorful look at book bindings.

Wrap up the week with another round of snapshots:

  • Seb Carley contributes this OS X snapshot sporting some awesome window backgrounds created with a custom Photoshop template. iTunes is shuffling some songs in the upper right.

  • Calvin sure does get around, marking his territory like a golden retriever loose in the neighborhood. This custom desktop picture is featured in a submission by COoLLaY. Icons from Xicons and our Icon Archive roam about.

  • Wagpage’s Aqua III K-Scheme debuts in this contribution from Exsanguination. iTunes is in standby at lower center, and A-Dock, configured with Wagpage’s OS X Aqua skin, hugs the bottom edge. In all, it’s a very authentic looking OS X mockup.

  • Chief icon and desktop wrangler Dan Flax contributes this screenshot featuring his “Astrology” desktop picture. The background is included with his AstrologiX icons which are also showcased. A few tasty morsels from his upcoming Aqua CubiX icon set have wandered in as well.

Today's News by Cletus

Let's not forget about the Super Get Info contest currently going on. Take it for a test drive, answer a couple of questions and you stand a great chance to win a free registration. I bet you will like the program too!

PrefsOverload 3.5.4 is now available for both Mac OS and Mac OS X. This new version of PrefsOverload handles MacOS X long file names correctly and fixes various bugs. Plus, the Mac OS X version of PrefsOverload was compiled using REALbasic 4.0.1 instead of 3.5.2, improving stability.

Menu Calendar loading.....A nice little program that I have been using is MenuCalendar. Especially on the iBook with screen spaced limited, I appreciate programs with quick access and limited intrusion. Version 1.1b is now available for Mac OS X. Changes include:

  • Minor changes in the user interface

  • Bug fix: drawer appears now on the first click after launch

  • NO MenuExtra! The needed Cocoa framework is not public and in active development at Apple - every work in this direction is wasted time

Memory Usage Getter 1.0.1 is a simple AppleScript to show memory usage. There are numerous ways to show the memory usage in Mac OS X. In most cases, the desire to demonstrate how much memory programs are using in the familiar format (such as in Classic) is really not useful since Mac OS X juggles memory differently.

IconGrabber 1.1 simply put "grabs icons." It will get the Finder-displayed icon for any file or application and save it to your home directory as a tiff file, preserving alpha transparency.

  • You can now drag files or folders to the image well in IconGrabber's window

  • You can now choose a folder from the open panel

DockFun! 1.2.0 is a tool to enable up 10 different docks. Virtually a Dock for all your needs. Changes to this very active program are:

  • Contextual menu in the dock

  • Solution for the death of the Dock

  • Possible solution of ("kill dock error code 2)

  • Please Email me and tell me if everything works or not so that we can put out a good product!!!

The popular SNAX has been updated yet again. Version 1.2.4 fixes a few minor bug report triggering exceptions, disabled the splash screen, made /Volumes visible in the browser and added a few new German strings

Seti DocklingSetiDockling 2.0.5 has been released. It is a Dockling designed to monitor SETI@home clients. Changes include:

  • You can now adjust the icons background transparency

  • Added more control over the display of the captions

  • Various minor bug fixes

Vizspring Software has released iWatch.. "iWatch is an easy-to-use yet powerful and feature-rich Mac clock and timer app. With iWatch you can set a timer with any time interval in hours, minutes, and seconds. You can also select a custom alarm sound (any System 7 sound file) or QuickTime movie alarm and optionally display an alarm message." iWatch is compatible with Mac OS Classic, as well as Mac OS X.

Everyday Software has announced the immediate availability of Bookit 2.2. Bookit is a bookmark management utility for Mac OS X. New to this version is: OmniWeb 4.1 support, iCab 2.7 support, divider support in OmniWeb, and the ability to import bookmarks from URL Manager Pro.

Alex asks, "Is it possible to change the throbber of MacOS X's Internet Explorer?"

Well, heck yeah! We don't collect splash screens and throbbers for nothin'! Like so many other applications under MacOS X, Internet Explorer no longer stores ResEdit resources in the usual places. In this case, they are in a file called, cleverly enough, Internet Explorer.rsrc.

To gain access to the Resource folder shown above, Control-Click the Internet Explorer application and select "Show Package Contents". After locating the Internet Explorer.rsrc file in the Resources folder, drag it onto QuickConvert to move the ResEdit resources back to their original location.

You can now open the file in ResEdit and see all the old familiar icons. The Throbber is still in PICT ID number 165.

Open the replacement Throbber in ResEdit and copy the PICT resource, then paste them into the Internet Explorer.rsrc file, When finished, drag Internet Explorer.rsrc back onto QuickConvert to move the resources back to their original location.

  • Hein Mevissen's "Home" series of OSX icons now expands to include, "Hein's Home 3.1" This fine set features 15 different semi transparent application and hardware icons, clearly adding a subtle touch of class to the dock.

  • No matter how you slice it, "Chrome Apples" for OSX by Flax Creations will make a nice addition to any desktop. This metallic set of Apple Logos comes in a dozen different colors.

  • Looking for some action or feel the need for speed? Jonathan Gurule's submits a high velocity desktop titled "Driven". Download this premium powered backdrop in 1024x resolution

  • I've been pondering the (hopefully) hidden meaning of this desktop by Mark all day, and it's reference to a "Deep Solution". So far no earthshaking insights have emerged, but what I can tell you is that it makes for a great background, and comes in 1280x resolution and in 3 different colors.

  • Dennis & Andriea Hicks apparently worked fingers to the bone creating their "Digital Guitars" series. These desktops blend some fanciful Photoshop and 3-D magic together to make a very cool set of 3 different backdrops, all available in multiple resolutions.

  • On the "Day After" a new world begins. Bradford J. Wiles of Macmonkies uses Bryce 3-D to paint this fantasy scene in 1024x and 800x resolutions.

  • Music buff Matthew Crowley created five stylish desktop pictures showcasing several of his favorite British bands! Featuring an appearance from Ocean, Verve and Oasis, this rockin set comes in 1280x resolution each.

Super Get Info Contest.Time for another great contest. Super Get Info by Bare Bones Software, Inc. is a Mac OS X utility designed to serve as a replacement for the Mac OS X Finder's Show Info command. Bare Bones Software is offering 10 free registrations to the lucky winners. If you have never tried this program out, you do not know what you are missing. Full details can be found on the contest page.

Bernie Zenis wanted me to let everyone know that he is providing a special preview of his new utility, MC Icon Parade, to ResExcellence readers. You can check it out at this special link. Thanks Bernie.

SoundHack 0.890b18 mentioned before, has been updated. This is a unique esoteric sound effects processing utility. Beta 18 processes sound 6-7 times faster than Beta 17. Works with Mac OS 8.6 or higher with CarbonLib or Mac OS X 10.0 or higher.

Locator 0.6.9 is a great little GUI interface for Mac OS X's built in locate-database which keeps track of all files on your hard drive. Because of the database, finding files using "locate" is very quick.. Very fast and versatile in fact. Plus it is free! Here is a screenshot of it in action.

iBeatTime X 1.2.1 is the latest release of this Internet time utility. Besides providing several bug fixes, the update also changes the Dock font and makes it bigger. Beside tracking time in the Dock, it will also let you add the time to the menu bar or provide it in a window like below.

iBeat Time

Mouseki 2.0.2 is the latest version for placing a keyboard on your monitor or screen.

  • Optimized key code simulation.

  • Issues with backspace under X resolved.

  • GUI, icon and pointer enhancements.

  • Updated documentation.

DockFun! has been updated to version 1.1.1. It is a tool to enable up to 10 different docks. You can have a dock for internet applications, a dock for Utilities, etc. Furthermore every dock has its own size position and properties.

  • Solved "Error 256" that made it unable to run DockFun! on many Macs (Sorry!)

  • Improved software and stability, no new features, but everything is definitely better

FuzzyClock 1.0.2 is an alternative menu bar clock in 22 languages. In fact this update adds several more languages.

The popular alternative Mac OS X file browser is SNAX and it has been updated again to version 1.2.3. A complete list of changes can be found here.

I spent several hours going through the Software Archive over the weekend. I updated many links and added several items to the Mac OS X section. Please stop by and look over the new items. And do not hesitate to let me know if I missed a broken link.

Polling Place by Michael Coyle

6-28-99

2-11-02

When I last asked this question back in 1999, the results were almost 50/50. A few years later, the scales have tipped against the use of Usenet, but still, I was expecting the number of Usenet readers to be much lower.

The biggest threat to newsgroups are the forums that populate web sites (ResEx is guilty of this). It's possible that while Usenet usage is down, if you were to include the number of internet users that also visit forums, the numbers of people reading and participating may actually be on the rise. Does anyone know of information to prove/disprove this? Let me know.

An overlooked, yet outstanding feature of the MacOS OS (Classic and X) is text to speech. Speaking dialog boxes alert me to a problem when I'm away from the monitor, and I couldn't live without speech in all my AIM windows! That's why this week's Polling Place asks, "Do you use text to speech?"

The flash animations are humorous and I like the 'webcam', but I wouldn't mention the site if they didn't have some cool stuff for ResEx readers! Under downloads, be sure to see the icon collections, desktop pictures, and font packs.
