Today's News by Cletus Riccardo has made his decision on the winner of the TypeIt4Me X contest. He has decided he likes two of them! Wow-- hold on, there is only one icon in the program!?? What he has decided is this he will work with both Michael and Scott and use combined elements from both entries to make up the one icon he needs. In other words, there were bits and pieces of both entries that he likes. He wants to blend them into one icon. He will be contacting both for further refinement. To that end, we can officially announce with our congratulations, the two winners as: - Michael Kraft
- Scott Meinzer
Heart Beat 1.2 works in both Classic and Mac OS X providing a System performance test. "Heart Beat is a performance test program which works by timing how long it takes you computer to do various predefined operations. It provides results which give an indication of the speed of the various components of you computer system." iBeatTime X 1.2 is an Internet time utility. Described as: "the clock of the 21st century, it lets you see your local time as Swatch beats. DockFun is a new application by John MacDonnell that allows you to have up to ten different Docks running at the same time. Each one can be customized and selected via a control window. A Flash video demonstrating it is availalbe here. Simpleshade 1.1 allows you to click in the Dock to collapse/uncollapse finder windows. From the read me: "Now included is Smartshade. Smartshade works just like Simpleshade except that it restores window sizes more precisely when unshading. Smartshade is necessarily slower than Simpleshade, because it preserves original window dimensions before shading the windows." A few kind souls "ripped" the Battery Monitor for the Dock in Mac OS X for me from an early system release. It is functioning fine for me. The program they reported using to do this is called Pacifist. You can get it here. I have a new problem. AOL Instant Messenger in X will allow me to sign on, but when I try to send a chat or IM it will quit. I can not find out why it is doing this. I even removed all traces of the program and updated to the latest. Although there is reported to be a huge memory leak in the latest release, it does the same thing quits when I try to send an IM or Chat. Any ideas on a conflict or why or what to do would be appreciated. Have a Press Release? Software or General News? Submit it here: Suggestions!
Tools of the Trade. by Michael Coyle It appears the Mozilla bug I filed on Monday was a duplicate of a problem first noticed by Ed Fry on December 22. To recap: setting the disk cache to zero in the Mozilla preferences breaks plugins that need to create a cache file; Quicktime and Flash are at least two. The problem exists on the Mac and Windows platforms. Don't do this! | I have never seen the process involved in developing a collaborative project like the Open Source Mozilla, but I'm surprised at the activity on this bug. Almost immediately I started receiving email on the progress to squash it, more than six so far! Most of the discussion is over my head, but seven coders from Netscape/Mozilla and one gentleman from Macromedia are working to solve the problem - and this is just one bug! It's amazing the effort that is involved. "Props" to everyone involved. Oh, did I mention there is a new version of Mozilla available for download? I have started to compare Mozilla against Explorer under Classic and MacOS X, and the speeds are so close that timing the difference with a stopwatch is meaningless. In fact, Mozilla runs Java applets substantially faster than Explorer. So come on, for the 75% of you using a product created by a monopoly, download Mozilla and give it a spin for a week. Several readers have written to say that the previous edit to add colors to the MacOS X "ls" terminal command no longer works under 10.1.2. This easy to install MacOS X Package from The GNU MacOS X Public Archive will give you what you seek. Beta 2 of USB Overdrive for Mac OS X has been released. This utility allows you use all types of USB joysticks and controllers, even if there is no native driver for the device. This latest update: - Added separate Speed and Acceleration settings.
- Restored the functionality of the Enabled check box.
- Added Middle Click, Fourth Click and Fifth Click to the list of actions that can be performed.
- Restored the ability to press modifier keys alone.
- Fixed a problem where the USBOverdriveHelper was not added to the Login Items.
- Fixed a problem with the Microsoft Wireless Explorer.
