The very nice program, Disk First Aid Doubler 1.2.3, fixes a conflict that cropped up with the last release with Default Folder. It is a recommended download if you run Default Folder.

Wapp pro 3.4.1 provides a menu listing windows of all running applications, to aid in quickly switching between them. Changes in this update include:

  • Some old-style desk accessories could be associated with the wrong submenu in the applications menu. Fixed.

  • Sending the front window to the back in carbon applications is now much faster.

  • The small font used to display the content of a Finders folders is now the View fonts used in the Finder, so non-Roman languages display properly.

  • On computers with some SCSI cards, if File Sharing was enabled along with Wapp pro's application-switcher in the menu bar, waking from sleep could hang. Fixed.

  • The application-switcher in the menu bar can now be grabbed and dragged.

  • The application-switcher in the menu bar has now a contextual menu that lets you change its positioning scheme easily.

Pic2Icon 1.0 is designed to work in Mac OS X . It allows you to create 128x128 icons for picture files.

Bruce McLaughlin tried pasting a new icon into the Mail.app in MacOS X. After logged out and back in (or you can relaunch the Finder), the new icon showed up. However, once he received a new email the dock icon changed to the original icon with the red notification badge. Here's how to change the icon and make it stick with the addition of the badge.

Pasting the icon into the Inspector Window doesn't work. You need to change the app.icns file in the Mail.app package. Make a copy of the Mail.app and Control-click on the program to bring up the "Show Package Contents" selection. Navigate your way to the Contents-->Resources folder and replace the app.icns with any icon in the new 'data-fork only' MacOS X format. If you use Iconographer, this is the "MacOS X New" format.

For extra credit, you can even change the red badge. Look at the four "newMailBadg.tiff" images in the same folder. They vary in size to accommodate message numbers as high as 1000. (That's a lot of email!). If you make new badges, send them to ResExcellence and we'll post them.

Duality 3, a theme switcher for Mac OSX has been released by Conundrumsoft. Also in theme news, Xthemination has posted two new Themes. One is an unlined Aqua style, and other is a totally original creation based on the NeXT window manager.

An outstanding new set of icons has been released for KDE 2.2. Slick Icons is a comprehensive replacement package that is easily imported and applied using the control panel.

  • A nice set of splashes for Microsoft Office X. These more closely resemble the default IE 5.1 splash.

  • A pair of About this Mac replacements from Conrad feature the eyes anf lips of Audrey Tchekova.

  • A very industial MOSS was crated by Dennis Hicks. It looks like non-skid metal!

Snapshot Theme: It’s January and, like many other students, I’m heading back to the classroom. I’ve been thinking to myself, “Wouldn’t it be cool to make a snapshot representing the university I attend?” So, I’m extending this invitation to all you students and teachers past and present to proudly display the educational institution you’re affiliated with in a snapshot. By next Friday I hope to have enough submissions to do a special posting. Please include “Snapshot Theme” in the subject line of your email.

Friday’s snapshots just dropped in:

  • Jennifer Arning contributes this snapshot sporting a custom “Flowers and Butterflies” desktop picture. Xicons’ Xbugs and Cactus Studio’s PictoGraph icons are scattered throughout.

  • A Windowmaker desktop picture and Swizcore’s NeXT Theme are showcased in this contribution from Roberto Dohnert. NeXBar mans the right edge, while the Power64 Commodore 64 emulator resides in the lower right.

  • This screenshot from Hazlitt touts a gorgeous “Mount Tamalpais” photographic desktop picture he took from Coyote Ridge in California. Simply breathtaking.

  • This snapshot from Günther Klebinger touts the “Waterbody 9” desktop picture. Audion, overhauled with the iPod face, is churning out soundtracks in the center. The Reactionary icons are also visible.

Icon & Desktop News: by Dan

Icons - Desktops: We've got (6) New Desktops, (2) New Icon Sets, and of course, updated "News From Around the Web". All on display for today's update!

  • Good Grief! I'll bet Charlie Brown never imagined he would show up as an OSX icon. As you can see, Dan from Nonsuchworks.com transforms a number of the cartoon characters into icons, representing only a portion of the entire Peanuts cast. He decided to start with the early, "classic" cast, so there's no Peppermint Patty, no Marcie, no Franklin, no Woodstock, and no Eudora, Rerun, Truffles, Roy, Belle, or Spike. Keep your eyes out for a follow-up set.

  • Just in the nick of time, Jen Goldsworth sends in the Justice league. This small set of 8 comic book super hero icons for OSX brings new meaning to the words truth, justice and the American desktop.

  • Super model goddess "Elle McPherson" graces another page of John Rose's personal Sketchbook. This foxy celebrity backdrop comes in 1280x resolution.

  • Hungry for some bright sunshine and a warm summer day by the lake, Mario Garza spent a dreary rainy winter afternoon doing the next best thing; creating the scene in Bryce 3-D. This elegant, but alas, artificial sunset comes in 1024x and 800x resolutions

  • Bradford J. Wiles of Macmonkies submits another of his nicely done Bryce 3-D desktops for your enjoyment titled "Different Worlds". This one is available in 1024x and 800x resolutions.

  • The word courageous and the name "Lance Armstrong", go hand in hand. Jonathan Gurule sends in this desktop portrait of the man who beat the odds in 1024x resolution.

  • All the way from the Land Down Under, Peter Mac submits another grouping of interesting photographs, these depicting the devastating fires of 2002 in Sydney Australia. Generated from images provided by the Sydney Morning Herald, all six shots come in 1024x resolution.

  • John Rose detours for the moment from his celebrity Sketchbook work, and sends us a subtle and slightly erotic composition titled "Interstellar". Comes in 1280x resolution.

Tools of the Trade. by Michael Coyle

On March 8th, 1999, ResExcellence posted an article on downloading CD track and title information for importing into CD Players. By comparison to the way we listen to music on our computers today, the tutorial reads like a historical document with no mention of MP3s! But it does discuss several tools for accessing the CDDB. At that time, the CDDB was a free service, a large database of CD track and title information contributed by end users.

That same day the CDDB, originally incorporated as Escient and not owned by Gracenote, released a license forcing CD Players that accessed the database to display an Escient company logo and to pledge to exclusively access only the CDDB database.

In effect, the programs that freely contributed to the CDDB were now being forced into restrictions if they wished to continue accessing the database they helped to build. The very next day, the roots of the Free CD Database were formed. The freecddb is a GPL alternative to the CDDB. It is used almost exclusively in the Linux community and by forward thinking Music Players and encoders on other platforms. Audion on the Mac is an example.

Last May, the issue was again placed under the spotlight when Roxio (the producer of Toast Titanium) in an attempt to protest the large licensing fees to access the CDDB, switched its allegiance to the freecddb. After lawyers wrangled, Roxio was brought back into the Gracenote fold. One can only hope the terms were more favorable or you can expect to pay more for your next version of Toast.

If you would like to support the FreeCD Database, freecddb on the Mac is a great place to start. In addition to a table of audio applications listing their support for the freecddb, they can show you how to use a hosts file redirect CDDB to the freecddb.

Users of iTunes 2 are currently stuck with the CDDB and unable to switch to freecddb. It's possible that soon a program called iCDc will be updated to handle iTunes' CD Info.cidb data file, but until then, only CDDB will be available.

Why go through all the bother? For years, thousands of people huddled over their computer keyboards typing the information for CDs into the original database. Once it reached critical mass, the maintainers of the database claimed it as their own and charged developers for the right to access it. That just ain't right!

Chris Lawson recommends this site to scramble email addresses and protect against spam-bots. Enter your email address, coyle@ResExcellence.com, for example, and it provides the conversion to the text shown below. The code can then be used in the mailto: of a web page.

Wouldn't it be ironic if the site doing the conversion was setup to harvest email addresses? Banish the thought...

We are back! What a wonderful trip we all had in San Francisco. Personally speaking, it was a lot of fun seeing everyone at the show and spending some time with my fellow ResExcellence mates. We even had an opportunity to do a little touring via the cable car system, which amazingly only cost a dollar to ride round trip! Although for the second year in a row (third for Michael) we did not see the Golden Gate Bridge. It was too foggy. Is there a Golden Gate Bridge?

A Better How Long 1.2 display a floating window with the number of days and the length of time your computer has been running in a floating window. Because it's floating in a window it is easily referenced. "It also offers a log window that indicates when the program was launched or quit." It is freeware.

pth clock PTHClock 1.7.0 is a pretty cool Mac OS X menu bar clock and calendar. This version adds Dutch localization and uses a better method for displaying shadows.

Keyboard Maestro 1.0.0 is a new hot key utility. From the read me: "Keyboard Maestro allows you to define any number of hot keys actions that can be activated anywhere simply by pressing a user definable keystroke. Keyboard Maestro also incorporates the wildly popular Classic MacOS application switching utility, Program Switcher." It is by ClaireWare Software.

PocketDock 2.31 "is an incremental update that improves skins support and fixes a number of bugs. PocketDock is an easy-to-use launcher utility to organize your applications, documents, web links and email addresses. This update is free for all registered users. A free 30 day trial version is available."

Wastebasket 1.1 is the newest version of this Applescript application which mimics behavior of the Desktop Trash Icon in Mac OS. This version now Ejects disks too.

XMonitor 1.0.1 will allow you to easily monitor your "disk, CPU, ram and network usage, PPP status, IP address, and e-mail. Changes to this version include:

  • -38 command not found error fixed

  • -38 (setuid) error caused if users Applications folder was not owned by root

  • Misc. grammatical errors

  • Help display in the preferences was partially off screen

MouseZoom 2.0 will speed up your mouse cursor movements. It is described as "a small Cocoa pref Pane which lets you set your mouse scaling preference (mouse speed) to greater values than the Apple-supplied pref pane." Changes include:

  • The speed is set "live" without having to log out before is takes effect. To do this, MouseZoom uses the same method as Apple's mouse panel. Should also work fine with 3rd-party mice.

Polling Place by Michael Coyle

Spam is certainly a problem and many readers offered suggestions on how to limit it. For several of the posters the preferred method is to first check your mail with POPMonitor and delete the offenders from the server before downloading them. The next most common suggestion was to create email filters, but I have always thought it was risky to trash any email before reading at least the subject. Plus it's getting so hard to sift the good from the bad that spam still sneaks through.

Unfortunately, web pages are often scanned by email sucking bots that then sell the addresses to anyone who wants to sell you Viagra. So starting today, ResExcellence will no longer be posting reader email addresses unless specifically requested. If you contribute to the site, please place the information in a READ ME or send a URL.

When it comes to fonts, I must admit to being a boring lad. Other than Nu Sans, I have never purchased a font and have installed few free ones. How about you? This week's Polling Place asks, "Have you installed 3rd party fonts?"

Before you answer be aware that I am not referring to fonts installed by applications such as Internet Explorer or AppleWorks. What I want to know is if you have visited a site like Fontosaurus Text and downloaded fonts for use.

Here is a roundup of other interesting items from the floor of the Macworld Expo...

This item is so new it's not even on their web site. Mbox is a new USB interface from Digidesign, the makers of ProTools. This is the answer to my location recording prayers. The Mbox plugs into (and is powered by) the computer's USB port. About the size of an external modem, the Mbox has 2 analog inputs (either MIC or LINE level), phantom power, two analog outputs, S/PDIF, plus headphone jacks and insert points.

In addition, it ships with ProTools LE! This is the perfect way to make you Powerbook a portable recording studio, or create an inexpensive, high quality studio in your home.

Watch their web site for pricing and availability, but I believe the using will cost $399.

For the first time, the Electronic Frontier Foundation had a booth at Macworld. Think of this group as an ACLU for the online world. Here are just some of the some of the items for which they are relentlessly fighting: your right to backup install CD's of software you have purchased, convert your CD s to MP3s for loading on an MP3 player, and the protection of email as private conversation. Join if you can. The rights you protect will be your own.

GroBoto is an easy to use graphics application that creates cool 3D images. Dan Flax was impressed with the simplicity of the interface and the quality of the output. Grab the demo from their web site and whip up some futuristic desktops for ResExcellence!
