Classic? 1.0.1 is the most recent release of this program that visually indicates Classic's state in the Dock. v.1.0.1 fixes a rare problem that made registering fail with certain names.

iTunes Clock  0.1 is a new beta released program that allows iTunes to start playing at specified time.

Wastebasket 1.0 will mimic the the normal Trash can behavior found in Classic by using an Applescript in Mac OS X.

From Macworld, it's ResExcellence. (Ya so?)

We have only been here a couple of hours, but there are already a few cool things of interest to ResEx readers. We have mentioned AppleSkinz before, but after seeing them up close and personal, I gotta say these are very cool. At first I thought they were replacement plastics for the shell of a G4 tower, but in reality they're snap on covers, as easy to swap as your socks!

Griffin Technology is an extremely under-rated company. The items they make are not only good looking, but necessary on todays Apple Computer. For example, my Titanium Powerbook does not have an audio input jack. As a sound engineer who needs to record location sound effects, this is a major drag. Griffin comes to the rescue with iMic, a USB audio input device. If you need more, take a look at PowerWare. It sports RCA jacks for stereo audio in and out, 1/8" plugs for audio in and out, and an Apple Pro Audio Speaker connection. And finally, their newest offering is PowerMate. This little hockey puck acts as a remote volume control for your Mac and glows cool blue from its underside. Stop by their web site to read more.

The gang from Yellow Dog Linux had a continuous crowd around their booth. What does it mean when Apple is highlighting MacOS X, yet a competing OS from a small Open Source company can garner a large crowd?

Icon & Desktop News: by Dan

Icons - Desktops: Coming to you live from downtown San Francisco and Macworld, We've got (6) New Desktops, (2) New Icon Sets, and of course, updated "News From Around the Web". All on display for today's update!

  • "Where are the bombs" is a collection of whimsical icons designed for OSX by Hein Mevissen. This fun set includes 15 different expressive desktop buddies that certainly will give any desktop a smile.

  • "iScreens" by Flax Creations, is a set of mini desktop monitors disguised as OSX icons, or is it the other way around? Either way, the download includes 6 different "flavored" screens to choose from, and a bonus semi transparent mouse icon.

  • Jonathan Gurule` envisions a distant future where some of Apple's products like the iPod has been transformed into an "iPodRacer". Capable of moving 1000 miles in 5 minutes, this bad boy dream machine should be a hot seller down the road. This desktop comes in 1024x resolution.

  • The first words out of most Mac Fan's mouths these days, is "I want that new iMac!", and Tom Hastings seems to be no exception. Enjoy a series of 3 "iMac desktops" from the author, all in 1024x resolution. (At least until you can get your paws on the real thing)

  • Avid "Farscape" fan Derek Caudill submits an elegant tribute to the long running Sci Fi Channel television series. This out-of-this-world desktop comes in 800x and 1024x resolutions.

  • The new images of the "flat iMac" have almost been to much to resist for Steve Sobek, and just had to pull out Photoshop (in Classic!) and play with them. Steve consoles himself with at least being able to look at the new machine on his desktop until he can afford to buy one! This two picture set comes in 1024x resolution each.

  • "The Eye" desktop by Conrad, was inspired by a very striking up-close photograph of a model's eye he found on the net, and created this very interesting image in 1024x resolution. Can you say "the apple of my eye?"

Build a Merlin Simulator with REALbasic by Erick Tejkowski

Back in the late 1970's, Parker Brothers introduced a great handheld electronic game machine called Merlin. Merlin played six different games that, while crude compared to today's gizmos, could hold a kid's interest for hours on end (trust me on this one). This week, we will begin with Part 1 of a multi-part REALbasic tutorial to build a Merlin simulator. (Continued...)

I certainly was not disappointed with the announcements at MacWorld. As you have now heard by many a viewer, "I want one of those iMacs!" I am very interested in seeing it live in SF. I am also curious if the monitor can be changed in the future should a larger one become available. Now there is a thought!

World Clock Deluxe 3.1.2 is available. This CSM can display up to 24 different time zones. Changes include: A bug causing a crash when World Clock Deluxe Strip 3.1.1 tried to read preferences created by version 3.0 has been fixed.

The excellent utility, File Buddy version 6.1.7 has been released. File Buddy provides for extensive desktop and file/folder editing. Searching by content would return files not containing the desired strings in some searches. This has now been fixed.

Folder Icon X has been updated to version 1.1. This version brings with it German language support. Additionally a bug in the Preference window has been fixed.

The Mac OS X Finder replacement program, SNAX has been updated to version1.2.1. A listing of changes follows:

  • Fixed bug when showing invisible files

  • Added preference to turn off anti aliasing in browser

  • Added Norwegian localization

  • Fixed issues with MS-DOS volumes

  • Fixed minor bug with Hex view window

Load Monitor 0.9 is the newest version of this System monitoring Utility: "Load Monitor gives the system load, not the CPU load. It tries to mimic the behavior of the well-known "xload" available with a X11 server."

InfoDoc X  2.0.1 is described as a tool to modify creator and type codes. This release provides minor bug fixes and enhancements for Mac OS X.

Planets Screen Saver is a Mac OS X specific screen saver. It has been updated to version 1.2.

Kaleidoscope Archive has updated with a new bunch of schemes. 10 new schemes and 2 updated ones grace the NAUS page.

Next stop... MacWorld San Francisco!

Whoa! DSX is a rockin new Theme for MacOS X. The folks over at Desktopper are hosting the download.

Create Your Own System Preferences Panel

From the University of Hackem', Professor Ibson instructs us on the fine art of customizing the System Preferences panel. To perform these modifications, you need the PropertyListEditor application that is part of the MacOS X Developer Tools. These tools can be downloaded from Apple's Developer site. Just create an account and navigate to Downloads.

First, we need to make a copy of the System Preferences application and give ownership of the file to a non-root user so it can be easily edited. (Continued...)

Today's News by CletusMWSF, MWSF

What a week we have ahead of us. Today is when Apple plans on spilling the beans on what is has been teasing every one with on their home page. "Just one more sleepless night." I don't know about that, but it will be exciting in any case.

ResExcellence will be updating from San Francisco. Please try to get any PR to the appropriate editor by Wednesday.

Edward F. O'Rourke writes: "You asked and we listened! Introducing "Classic?" v 1.0. Classic? v1.0 is now a TRUE Dock Extra! New Aqua Icon In addition to Startup / Shutdown we've added Restart. Quick convenient access to Classic Control Panels With much more planned in coming versions and we aint done yet!"

Wapp pro was recently updated to version 3.4. This version brings compatibility to Mac 9.2.2. Additional changes were made. A list of changes is below:.

  • Fixed an incompatibility with Illustrator 10 (and possibly some others Carbon apps) when using the popup option "Click&hold in the front windows title bar".

  • Fixed a problem with some configurations of Mac OS 8.5 and 8.6.

  • Corrected a problem in Carbon applications when using the Mac OS feature "double-click title bar to collapse windows" along with Wapp pro's option "Click&hold in the front window's title bar"

IconCleaner 1.1.1 will allow drag and drop deletion of custom icons from files and folders. Version 1.1.1 now allows you to remove custom icons from items by dragging them over the IconCleaner Icon (before you had to open IconCleaner and drag the items over its window).

Vizspring Software has released iWatch version 2.0. It has been completely rewritten. "iWatch is an easy-to-use yet powerful and feature-rich Mac clock and timer app. With iWatch you can set a timer with any time interval in hours, minutes, and seconds. You can also select a custom alarm sound (any System 7 sound file) or QuickTime movie alarm and optionally display an alarm message."

Super cool IconBrowser...Iconfactory has released IconBrowser 3.2 which is a program designed to use IconDropper packs with Mac OS X. If you want to create new "packs" you will need to download and register IconDropper. If you want existing packs, If you are registered user of IconDropper, the code will work for IconBrowser. This is a great little application, making storing and viewing icons as simple as possible in Mac OS X.

Unsanity Software keeps producing the most exciting software items for Mac OS X. Their newest is Xounds 1.0, a Haxie that brings Appearance Sounds back to Mac OS X. While it is still in its infancy and sound implimentation/customization is not complete, it holds great promise. I like it!

Polling Place Polling Place by Michael Coyle

Since there was no Poll last week, there are no results to report this week. (Duh!)

In the beginning, I replied to every unsolicited email with a firm letter, even a phone call if a number was provided, but as the years wore on, I wore down, and now I trash them. To reply in any way only proves your email address is valid and worth selling again. Over the past two weeks, I have kept track the percentage of spam I receive - an amazing 90% of my email is unsolicited.

What about you? This week's Polling Place asks, "What percentage of your email is SPAM?"

My goodness, the gang at Xthemination has been busy. They just posted another new theme, this one titled Titanium Tew, a software version of the original metallic theme for MacOS X.

Thanks to Anders Vessel for tipping me off to AppleUSBMouse. It's a modified version of Apple's USB mouse driver which makes your Apple USB mouse go much faster under MacOS X. There is also a link to MouseZoom, a preference pane that speeds up your mouse cursor movement in Mac OS X.

Recently, we discussed the difficulty backing up files in MacOS X. Michael Watson has created a pdf file with lots of good information. He also recommends reading this site.

Somewhat related, I spent time this weekend reorganizing my hard disk for MacOS X. I moved all of my documents into the MacOS X Users Documents folder - even Classic applications. For example, I usually place Photoshop files in the application folder, or text files in with AppleWorks, but given the permission structure of MacOS X, editing these files became difficult. As an added benefit, it's easier to locate and backup all my files.

Snapshots by Jeremy Hoesly

Today’s update marks another milestone: the second anniversary of the Snapshot Section! Two years ago today, I posted the archive’s first four snapshots. Initially I updated three times a week, adding two pictures each update. At that time, Kaleidoscope was king of the hill, while SoundJam and Audion battled for a prominent place on the average Mac user’s desktop. Netscape Communicator was still widely used, and icons, at a size of 32x32 pixels, were just inheriting a 32-bit color palette. Times certainly have changed and the Snapshot Section has changed in format, operation, and content accordingly. I say thank you to all you snapshot contributors and frequenters, several of which have been here from the beginning, for your faithful support. The Snapshot Section is alive and well thanks to you!

Monday’s snapshots are on the loose. Go get ’em:

  • This OS X snapshot from Kahless touts a desktop picture from Flax Creations’ “Fractals Volume 1” collection. iTunes is churning out songs at center, and SNAX, an alternative file browser, is featured along the top. Pratch’s Graphite folders, MM-Hard Drives, and other selections from Xicons roam about.

  • This wintery snapshot from Steve Kulisek sports Digital Blasphemy’s “Blue Christmas” desktop picture. Snö provides the precipitation. Icons from Perfect Yosemite, Xicons, and Icon Factory are scattered throughout.

  • James Steele contributes this OS X snapshot featuring PCalc, a calculator program, along the right edge and Personal Organizer, a personal information manager, in the upper left. iTunes is juggling music along the top.

  • The “SlickTime2” desktop picture and SlickTime Theme are custom creations showcased in this submission from Steve. iTunes is tickling the eardrums in the upper right.

  • Aquatica lovers and collectors will really enjoy "xfish", another fantastic icon set for OSX by Sam of Pixel Jerk. This grouping includes 14 different sea critters in vibrant colors.

These emotions portrayed run the gamut from sorrow and mercy to individuality and suffering. This magnificent assemblage of 7 desktops were created in Poser2 and Bryce5, and all come in 1280x resolution. A more detailed explanation of Andy's thoughts on the collection are included.

Today's News by Cletus

I hope everyone had an enjoyable break. As we enter the first week of the new year, I will once again spend a little time catching up on the news that came in.

WorkStrip 1.5.3 is a file management Control Strip-like launcher. Changes in this version include:

  • Fixes all known compatibility issues with Control Strip modules, including a long-standing problem which would cause random crashes with modules that usually work without problems.

  • The WorkStrip Licence validation dialog has also been reworked to reduce the possibility of confusion as to what should be entered in which fields.

Launch Items 1.0 will open documents with customized applications from a contextual menu which is fully editable. This update provides full compatibility with Mac OS 9..2.2.

Iconizer Pro was also recently updated to version 1.6.8. It will allow you to build a group of icons from a picture to make folder backgrounds. This update will "handle multiple selected items sent from the contextual menu."

Also updated was the Iconizer Pro Plugin to 1.5 for Photoshop. The Photoshop plugin transfers layer data to Iconizer Pro. This update improves memory usage and data transfer.

Tweaker 1.0.1 is described as a simple tool to change a few hidden OS X options. Tweaker allows you to modify a few OS X hidden options, such as screen shot format, file visibility and scroll bar style.

Unsanity LLC has released Dock Detox 1.0. "Dock Detox suppresses the bouncing notification behavior in the Dock." In other words, even when the Dock is hidden, when an application in the Dock requires your attention, you get incessant bouncing. This will prevent the bouncing from happening.

Unsanity has also updated their other Haxie, FruitMenu to version 1.1. This brings customization to the Apple menu. A full list of changes can be found below:

  • FruitMenu now is a Preference Pane.

  • It is now possible to order FruitMenu Items contents a-la FinderPop.

  • It is now possible to insert menu separators in FruitMenu Items contents.

  • System Preferences menu item will have an icon if icons are enabled.

  • FruitMenu now honors .hidden file.

  • Preference Pane names are being sorted correctly.

  • Other bug fixes and tweaks.

SNAX 1.1.9 is now available for download. SNAX is a Finder replacement for OS X. This update fixes a problem copying Symbolic links.

iconCompo 1.2.1 will allow you to compose an icon from two images. This update provides better compatibility with Mac OS X 10.1.2.

Edward F. O'Rourke notified me of a couple of significant changes coming with one of Xgadgets products on Monday, Apple isn't the only company to have a little surprise up its sleeve! Check back on Monday and I will have full details.

One of the easiest ways to install a MOSS replacement is to use Laine Lee's Applescripts. He has tweaked them for the latest Classic MacOS so snag them and grab sme MOSS. Laine also has some creations on his site.

If you updated to MacOS X 10.1.2, then Ammon Skidmore has an update to the modification to Disable Beep When Changing Volume in MacOS X.

Last week I mentioned how removing the mach files from the hard disk would now cause MacOS X not to boot. I'd swear it wasn't always like this. Joshua Ochs adds:

The mach related files are just that - the mach microkernel! Two of the files are not needed, it's true - the .sym file is for debugging, and one of the files (forget which) is a symbolic link created to the other one at boot time. However, killing them all will kill mach, and thus your OS.

Xthemination has added a new theme. SimpleX moves further away from the Aqua styled themes we usually see. Hopefully as tools get better, the variety of themes will rival Kaleidoscope schemes.

Fontosaurus is back with a HUGE new update. New items include, The Poolside Family and Depleted Uranium, plus Heater, a handwriting font, and Blowfish, an art deco font, which are both free downloads.

Also, for you A-Team fans, there's a set of Mac icons now available, too.
