Message:

What can I do when the AVI to QT utility built into OS9.1 comes back saying you need more software but none exists on the server do you want to close window?

After getting the finger, so to speak, from Apple and their claim of QT 5 Pro playing AVI files being false, I wonder if there is another way to view AVIs on a Mac.
Any advice would be appreciated

Thanks,

Zjohn

A .avi is a container file, and nothing but. A person creating an .avi file has their choice of what video and audio software to use (called codecs).

So, say if I wanted to make a high quality high compression movie file on my PC, DivX would be the choice. DivX is just a video codec, and they usually combine that with MP3 for audio, in a .avi file. On the other hand, I could also (for no reason, really) put a microsoft codec in there.

In short, the type of AVI files varies widely. If you gave us some more info (like where you found the file, etc), maybe we could answer with the appropriate tools.

BTW, QuickTime 5 Pro DOES play AVI files, just not all of them. :)

Are you trying to play divx avis or standard avis?

If divx u need microsoft media player plus the divx player to play em in os9 - well, that's the easiest way.

if ordinary avis u need:
Indeo Video
Indeo® Video
Indeo® Video 3
Indeo® Video 4
Indeo® Video5

extensions - can't remember where to get them from but they enhance quicktime's avi playback
