There was a bad bug in our main page that was causing a page rendering malfunction for users of Netscape and Mozilla under Mac OS 9. I seriously banged my head against the screen Saturday morning but was unable to fix it. After messing with it again on Sunday I found an archived news page from the second week of September that was unaffected so that was used as a template to remake the index and all appears to be well. I was lucky in that earlier in the week I had moved our Bondi Blue iMac onto the network so I was able to work in OS X on the G4 and pre-flight on old iBondiMac. If you notice any other issues please don't hesitate to contact me. The problem was only with Netscape 6.2 and above and Mozilla in OS 9. Netscape 4.7 has a small rendering issue with the logo and main nav areas but I'm willing to live with those for now. This bug didn't show up in any OS X browers that I tested: Safari, IE, Mozilla or Phoenix.

With all that in mind it would be good for me to have a better understanding of what browsers are being used to access our little corner of the Mac Web Community. If you're thinking our collected server stats show that info you'd be most mistaken - we collect a very bare amount of info to show us how many pages are served, amount of data transferred, requested pages and a referal report - no info about your computer, operating system or other personal data along those lines. So tell us, What browser do you use when visiting ResExcellence?

Scott

Hey Scott I love your website (even for us ol' classic-based guys like me) It rocks and always makes my Windoze friends jealous. Keep up the good work! Personally, I love Mozilla 1.2.1 for OS 9.x. It's the fastest thing under the sun for that system. The rendering's great, it's got tabs, easy bookmarks with the sidebar. Netscape 6 and 7 are still at Mozilla 1.0 and Opera and iCab are still too buggy for my tastes. Both of them have CSS problems and I have real troubles with password sites like eBay. Opera especially. Sometimes it bombs out at the drop of a hat. Mozilla never gives me a problem. IE's really stable, but half the speed of Mozilla and no tabs (ugh). I also love the text browser Wannabe 1.0 ( http://mindstory.com/wb2/ ). You can really zip around the net with it and it works really great, hand-in-hand with all of the other browsers.

Having a machine that OSX would not enjoy being on, I have remained a YellowDog Linux user. My current browser of choice is Mozilla Firebird. Its so nice to see Mozilla stripped down to just the basics and being the -browser- it was meant to be instead of the Jack-of-all-trades app that it bloated into.

Yup, I still use iCab (X). As an original underdog I think it should have been a formal choice in the list, but then again there are a lot of Mac browsers right now! At this point iCab chokes on CSS2 but I'm hoping Mr. Clauss gets that version 3.0 out the door. In particular, iCab's Hotlist/bookmarks have a much better feel to them than Safari. The latest version added tabbed browsing which would have been my main reason to go to Mozilla or Safari. I keep a copy of the other browsers in case I have difficulty with a site. Also, I preview webpages I make in other browsers to catch coding errors. iCab's not the fastest, but on broadband it's not so much an issue.

For ResExcellence, I usually use iCab 2.9.5 on MacOS 9.2.2. For less image-intensive sites (or sites where I really don't care about the images), I use Lynx via a SSH connection to my Unix account.

Just moved to X, and although iCab doesn't feel as fast as it did under 9, it still feels like it surfs faster than other X browsers. And it has a better user experience to boot (but I let ads through on ResEx and most Mac sites)!

At work, it's iCab on OS 9.

I use no less than 3 browsers on a regular basis. Omni, Moz, and Safari. I never use IE for ideological reasons. I'm always running into some bonehead page that won't render correctly or crashes in one browser, so I have to switch to another. Ebay searches randomly crash Omni, and some JS stuff doesn't seem to work right with Moz so right now, I'm using Safari. Has tabs and doesn't crash, but the cookie/image controls suck so I probably won't stay long.

What I really want is Safari with OmniWeb's cookie/image controls and combined compatibility!

Camino. I only use Safari for the odd site that crashes Camino, or simply doesn't work with it, both cases are very rare, only happens with two websites so far since I started using it when it was Chimera. Safari is alright, but I hate brushed metal, and it takes up too much of the screen, Camino, when buttons are set to text only is very minimal. It's like watching a movie or TV, you want more screen, less TV. My only problem with Camino is it's horrible bookmark management, it's very inefficient and somewhat buggy, I also hate the sidebar idea, just like with Mail, unless you have a cinema display it's not a very efficient use of screen space. That's the only thing Safari has over Camino, and apparently the next release of it will change exactly that, ironically to the same setup Safari uses.

OSX 10.2.6 so havent noticed any problems with the rendering of the site

Safari v85 is my main browser. If a site will load in safari i'll use it as i like the bookmarks system combined with tabs and its speed.
I just wish little things would get ironed out so it'd work with more sites. Secure http still has a couple of probs and it has issues with caching which annoys me. Also the download window is a bit limited

Next browser i'd go to is camino, which is just as quick, similar design though i dont like the way the history works - it confuses me. Cos in safari and just about every other browser u can go to either a history menu or submenu and the most recent sites are there. With Camino the history is in the sidebar which i dont like. However, it has less issues with secure http so i tend to do a lot of ordering online with camino.

Finally, if a site is scripted to not open in netscape type browsers and only with IE, i have my copy of IE5.2 - i use it rarely, it's slow but sometimes it really is the only browser that will open the page properly. Generally it'll open 99% of pages but slower and is generally a horrible program. Hence my preference for Safari & Camino

On the 'Dome' running OS X 10.2.3:

Safari
Dillo (X11)
Netscape 7.0.2
iCab X
Phoenix

All work great except for Dillo which has trouble with JS. iCabX not as speedy as the Classic version, a life saver in Classic.

on the PowerMac PPC 5400/180 running System 7.5.5:

iCab
Netscape 3 Gold (nice little mail client) Snappier TM than NS 4.08 which bogs down after a while, but 3 stalls on more sites
Wannabe (text browser only, images are linked and can be d/l'd to disk to view)
Mosaic beta 4 (many sites come in but render strangely)
CyberDog 2.0(?) (gets bogged down after it's been running awhile, not enough physical ram for it or Netscape 4.08)

RE: the Classic browsers, except for iCab, the others take mulitiple-hits on the Return key on the 5400/180 before I get anything anymore, and they all stall on certain sites when they never used to. I've thrown out things like prefs and DNS, Internet Config. files and stuff, no diff. I threw away the Netscape 4.08 certificates file or something one time and it all started after that. Probably need to reinsat them but don't use this machine enough anymore to bother. These older browsers don't seem to be able to authenticate anymore/properly or whatever. Tried MacWeb (Classic), but I can't get many sites to come in, must be the way it communicates with the other end, not modern enough, same for Mosaic. Use Applescripts to empty the caches and global whatevers for these Clasic browsers after each use.

Got DSL now, so it's all fast.

On my eMac, it's generally Camino, but occasionally Safari-and that's it these days. (I have got OmniWeb in my dock, and I love the company and was glad to pay them the money, but it just...isn't a very good browser. There, I said it. Maybe the next version will be a great leap forward!)

On my PC, it's generally been IE6, but I'm trying to make the full-time switch to Firebird. It's not for some ideological reason (if their product works the best for something and I still choose not to use it, no one suffers but me), but because a lot of things seem to work better on Firebird, even at .7 or whatever it is.

Of the ones I commonly use, ResEx seems to work slowest in Safari. 1.1 should fix this.

This is a bit off topic, but somewhat related...

As I access ResEx, at work, with MS IE and then use OS X Safari when accessing from home, I've noticed that Safari will not retain the Poll numbers between different internet sessions (dial-up). MS IE does retain the Poll between daily, internet sessions (DSL).

My Safari Prefs are set to accept Cookies from the web site only; and, as I visit other websites where a Cookie is remembering, between sessions, a login or pref, I'm confounded why ResEx's Poll is not being remembered between different internet sessions. (Notes: 1) The Poll is being remembered during same session when I leave ResEx and then return. 2) Last year, when using OS X IE, the behavior was the same.) ...This is a nice feature, however, when I feel like voting several times on the same topic.

...My principal concern is whether Safari (I've got the latest version installed on 10.2.6), or Internet Configuration, is functioning properly. Any ideas?

If I use the URL " www.resexcellence.com/index.shtml?results " to access ResEx, the Poll Results are remembered.

I've tested using the latter URL before the prior one and vice versa. Depending on which URL is used, the result is consistent with the previous use of the very same URL. ...This issue has more to do with Bookmarks, I think.

...Well, I'll go have a chocolate chip cookie.

Stuck to Camino like a lamprey for the longest time (latest nightly is from Sept 17th of this year), but Safari has two stengths that finally won me over:

- pithhelmet - blocking certain images is so much easier than manually trying different addies with cookperm.txt
- the bookmark manager window can be toggled - both on & off. Camino's will pop up, but I can't get it to revert back to what was previously on the tab.

Don't like the brushed metal look? Try SafarIcon. (Or just switch to a different OS X Theme that makes brushed metal look better...)
CaminIcon's great for Camino too.

If you play the browser race, Roadbook has its uses... (majority of my bookmarks are still in Camino, and staying there for now)

That bookmark issue can be solved by making sure you have the Sidebar icon in your toolbar, and clicking that icon when you want the bookmarks to disappear. POOF! Normal tab/window content is back!
