Make an Alert Dialog Box Movable (modal)

Today's ResEdit modification was submitted by Brian DePalo from Icon Plaza. It takes the non-modal alert dialogs from an application, and makes them Theme compliant and moveable.

If you don't have it already, you will need to install the alrx template. Open the template and a copy of your ResEdit preferences in ResEdit. Copy the new template and paste it into the the preferences. Save and quit ResEdit. Replace the old preferences and the next time you launch ResEdit, the template will load.

In this example, I will modify the Alert dialog from the TCP/IP control panel.

Make a copy of the Control Panel and open it in ResEdit.

Open the ALRT resources and hunt through the ID numbers until you find the one that matches the box you want to change.

In this TCP/IP example, the ID is 129.

Once you have the information, close the ALRT's.

From the Resource menu, select Create New Resource and create a new alrx.

From the File Menu, Get Info on your new alrx resource ID and change its number to match the ALRT dialog you found earlier. In this example, its 129

Open the alrx with the correct ID number and set the controls listed on the left to equal 1.

Save your work and quit ResEdit. The modified control panel is ready to use right away.
