Declutter and Tidy Your Mac’s Desktop

You might not want to admit it, but the Desktop on your Mac is probably cluttered. Who cares though, there’s usually an app or a number of windows hiding it, right? Well, not always…and there are several benefits to decluttering your Mac’s desktop – and there’s also several ways of achieving a clutter free desktop.

But…Why?

A decluttered Desktop (both physical and virtual) means less stress
If you organize it, your files will be easier to find
You avoid slowing down the Finder – every icon on your Desktop is treated like a separate window (weird, but true).

OK…so how do we declutter?

The easy way: Hide it

You can configure your system so that icons on the Desktop are hidden. The files will still be stored on the Desktop, and accessible from a Finder window, but you will benefit from having a tidy looking Desktop.

Unfortunately this isn’t provided as a checkbox in the Finder preferences, but a simple Terminal command does the trick:

Launch Terminal from /Applications/Utilities, and type the following:

defaults write com.apple.finder CreateDesktop -bool false

Press Enter. Then kill the Finder so that it relaunches to apply the changes:

killall Finder

The slightly better way: Shove it all in a folder

This can get messy, but you can quickly tidy your Desktop by moving all the files into a folder. The folder could be on your Desktop, or somewhere else. In the past, I have organised by month into folders, such as “Desktop November 2013”. At a later date, I would go through the files and organise them into the correct places on my system.

The hardest but best way: Spend time organizing your files

The best method is to spend the time necessary to organize your files correctly, most likely making use of the default folders provided by Mac OS X in your User folder. Create folders for your current work, projects, and so forth – and stick to them. I run several businesses and also keep work relating to my day job on my personal computer, and I don’t just let it all float on my Desktop – it would quickly become chaotic if I did!

Use Two Dropbox Accounts on your Mac with Dropbox Encore

With Dropbox, you can use shared folders to allow two users (two separate accounts) to share a single folder of files. If you want to share a large amount of folders and files, Dropbox Sharing might not be the best solution. With Dropbox Encore, a third party utility, you can use a second instance of Dropbox to run in a single Mac OS X user account. This works as long as each instance of Dropbox has a unique account and separate Dropbox folders on your local storage.

Dropbox doesn’t officially support using two accounts on a single Mac, but it works with Dropbox Encore and makes it easy for organisations to share their files with individuals who work away or off the company’s network, for example. With Dropbox Encore, there are a few things to keep in mind:

Folder and file icons in the second Dropbox do not have the Dropbox “checkmark” indicating the item has been synchronized.
Multiple, simultaneous Dropbox accounts can be confusing and lead to mistakes. Be sure to check out official Dropbox Sharing before experimenting with Dropbox Encore.

By using Selective Syncing, and setting the second Dropbox instance to use the Black and White menubar icon, you can also easily distinguish between the two Dropbox instances. I use selective sync so that I’m only receiving the files/folders I need from the secondary account.

How to stop Adobe Bridge from opening when you plug in an iOS device

I installed Photoshop CS5 on my Mac when it was released in April 2010. Every time I connect my iPhone to my computer, Adobe Bridge launches and becomes the active screen. I then have to close the Photo Downloader window and the main Bridge browser.

Not only is it annoying, it’s pointless because I never import anything using Bridge. In fact, I rarely transfer photos from my iPhone to my computer because that’s what Photo Stream is for.

Today I finally sat down and worked out how to fix this annoying pop-up, and I’d like to share it with you.

How to Stop Adobe Bridge Automatically Opening

Start by plugging in your device – it can be an iPhone, iPad, or practically anything with photos stored on it.
Close those annoying windows.
Open Image Capture either by going to Launchpad and finding it or searching for the app in Spotlight (Command + Spacebar).
Select your device in the sidebar to the left and click the little up arrow in the bottom left of the screen. Only do the latter if you don’t see a small menu there already.
Click the drop-down menu below “Connecting [device name] opens:” and select the “No application” option.
Test it by unplugging and plugging in your device.

That’s it! Now you can enjoy a disruption-free time of connecting your iOS device, or anything else that may open Adobe Bridge.

Backup your Mac: Time Machine

Why aren’t you backing your data up?

I’m talking about your music, your photos, your documents, and anything else you may have on your computer’s hard drive. All of it can be lost at any given time, no matter how far technology has come to prevent data loss. Fortunately, every shipping Mac includes Time Machine, Apple’s simple-to-configure app to backup your files.

Time Machine has been included with every release of Mac OS X since the fall of 2007 when it shipped with 10.5 “Leopard”. With Time Machine, all you need is an external hard drive connected via USB, FireWire, or Thunderbolt, depending on what model Mac you own.

Simply connect your drive, and the Mac will ask you if you want to use the drive with Time Machine. Yes, it’s that simple. Plus, it’s already a part of the OS, so there’s no extra software to install. The best part of this is that it’s all automatic, meaning that once an hour, every day, your machine is being backed up to the external drive without needing you to do anything.

Restoring a file is as simple as entering Time Machine via the menu bar or app icon, and navigation to the last known date/time the file was on the computer. Once you locate it, hit the Restore button and your file is back in your possession.

Time Machine also works great with Time Capsule, enabling any Mac in the household to backup to just one central device. Time Machine only works on Macs; Time Capsule works with Windows and Mac.

Currently, I use a 2TB Western Digital MyBook Studio LX, connected via FireWire 800. It’s solid, quick, and most of the time, I don’t even know it’s running due to how quiet it is.

How To Hide All Desktop Icons On Mac OS X

Your computer desktop is probably cluttered. It’s probably a mess, full of scattered files and folders. I used to spend time constantly tidying them (as I save a lot of stuff to the Desktop). These days, I use this handy trick to keep the icons hidden, so all I have to see is my desktop wallpaper image.

Clean up the Desktop by Hiding Desktop Icons

Navigate to Applications > Utilities and open Terminal.app

Type the following line, and press Enter:

defaults write com.apple.finder CreateDesktop -bool false

After hitting enter, you’ll want to force quit and relaunch the Finder so that the changes take effect. Type this into the Terminal and press Enter:

killall Finder

The files that were on your Desktop still exist, they are now just hidden. You can navigate to your Desktop ‘folder’ via the Go menu in Finder, or using the keyboard shortcut Command + Shift + D.

To reverse this and show the Desktop icons again, open the Terminal and type the following:

defaults write com.apple.finder CreateDesktop -bool true

Again, force quit the Finder (it will automatically relaunch) and your icons will reappear on the desktop.

Control Mac Screen Brightness with Shady

Shady is a free app that allows you to control the brightness of your screen beyond what the default settings allow. On some Macs, the default lowest brightness isn’t as low as we might prefer. Shady puts a shade over your screen to help soothe your tired or dazzled eyes. You can use it to reduce your Mac’s brightness far below the usual minimum, without any risk of damage to your screen.

Modern Macs have exceptionally bright screens, and often the minimum brightness level is still dazzling. If you’re working late at night, or your eyes are tired or maybe you’re just sensitive to bright light, it can be difficult to stare at the screen for long periods. That’s where Shady comes in.

How to Control Mac Screen Brightness

Download Shady, and open it. It sits in your menu bar, and is very simple to use.

Shady lets you pull a virtual shade over your screen (or screens, if you have more than one – Shady covers them all), dimming the display to a more comfortable level. The shade will ignore your mouse clicks, naturally, so you can continue to use your Mac as usual.

You can brighten the shade all the way up to your normal screen brightness, or darken it down to 90% shade (very nearly black). It’ll change in increments of 5%, and it starts at 40% opacity (or 60% transparency), which should be quite comfortable. Shady will save your shade level and restore it next time you launch the app, and it’ll also automatically get out of your way when it’s launched (returning the focus to whatever app you were in when you launched Shady).

Shady doesn’t do anything funky to your system (it’s just a regular application; just quit it and trash it if you don’t want it anymore), and will not damage your screens in any way. It should, however, make your eyes feel better – as long as you don’t make your screen so dark that you’re straining to see anything!

How to Locate iOS (iPhone) Simulator in Xcode

The iPhone Simulator, now called iOS Simulator, is included with every copy of Xcode. It can be used to emulate any iPhone or iPad, useful for iOS development and mobile web development. It used to be included as a separate application in the Developer Tools folder. Recently, Apple changed the file hierarchy of Xcode and bundled everything into the Xcode.app package.

Xcode 4.3 and newer

The iOS Simulator is located at:

/Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/Developer/Platforms/iPhoneSimulator.platform/Developer/Applications/

Use the keyboard shortcut Command + Shift + G to navigate to that location. From here, you can also create an alias (shortcut) or place the iOS Simulator on the Dock.

Xcode 4.2 and older

If you are using an older version of Xcode and iPhone SDK, iPhone Simulator.app is located here:

/Developer/Platforms/iPhoneSimulator.platform/Developer/Applications/

Add Tabs and more to Mac OS X Finder with XtraFinder

For as long as I can remember, I have wanted tabs in the Finder. Apple never added the feature, but thanks to XtraFinder from Tran Ky Nam Software, we don’t have to wait any longer. XtraFinder is a useful utility which adds lots of missing features to Finder including tabs, dual panel/dual window, arrange folders on top, Cut/Paste, Global hotkeys, Copy Path, Show Hidden Items, Colorful icons in Sidebar and more.

XtraFinder is compatible on Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.8 to Mountain Lion 10.8.2 and is available as a freeware download. Instead of working as a separate program like PathFinder, this utility adds the missing features into the Finder seamlessly – without affecting stability or performance.

Add Tabs to the Finder easily with XtraFinder

The tabs feature is currently described as experimental, and is slightly slow currently – but this should only improve with time. Recently closed tabs can be reopened and new tabs can be opened with CMD+T. The Tabs can be chosen to display as either Safari or Chrome-like tabs.

XtraFinder includes plenty of features beside tabs. It allows you to enable lots of missing features, such as ‘Copy to’ and ‘Move to’. All of these are available in the XtraFinder Preferences. It should be noted that none of these are turned on by default, so this is probably the first place you’ll want to look after installing XtraFinder.
