Okay, time to move on from the old and give us something new – the Mac has moved on, it’s time for you to do the same, unless the intent is to have a site for the Retro-Mac crowd. Please, don’t over-think things. This site evolved into what it was over several years – just start simple again, and build. Asking about the old stuff will just confuse some and slow down the process of bringing this site back to life.

Given that, I’m still skeptical. Change the graphic at the top of this page. Tell us who’s on the “team”. Open the curtain. Then I’ll be more likely to believe that you’re earnestly trying to bring this site back.

Yes, of course they should stay. Every ResEx user who ever sent in a snapshot will love to look at their really old setup. Also, it is stuff like the snapshots that made ResEx different from other similar sites. The personal touch.
In fact, you should keep _all_ the old material, as ResExcellence is a huge piece of computer/OS history.
(And since when were the snapshots “useful”? Firstmost, they were fun!)

Shouldn’t your first priority be to bring up a great site that lets creative people share and showcase their work, and only /then/ worry about retrofitting the old stuff in there? Sure, it’s interesting for nostalgic reasons—especially to those of us who remember names like Arlo Rose—but the site is sure to be a monumental let-down unless you get the core functionality right, and worse, it’s nothing at all unless you /publish something/.

I vote for: get that section set up & functional so that people can add new snapshots after the site re-opens, then gradually add in the old stuff after the heavy-lifting on the rest of the site is done

I’m not sure if Brian Wilson is still involved with Unsanity, so maybe that’s why we’ve not seen any progress with ResEx. I would think if Phil Ryu WAS involved, he has long since moved on in favor of actually making money with MacHeist. MyDreamApp imploded because there was really no money involved, so I suspect this site is the same.

Whatever the case, some sign of actual ownership of this site would be nice (like changing the graphics, or God forbid actually getting a live site up and running). But until then, I refuse to believe anything at all is happening with ResEx.
i’m with most on here… just get it up and running, the content will come in and then you have all the time you want to sift through and ask about the old stuff.
and how about this, that instead of some strangely informal post thing you post something about, oh i don’t know, who the heck you are, what the heck is happening, you know fill us the heck in on something! if you want ideas you know there are about 4000 posts with suggestions in them already. i can’t see how anything you might ask now hasn’t already been answered or suggested.
you know after having stuck around this long, i thought i had moved past any anger or frustration issues and then along comes these rather asinine posts that accomplish nothing at all but create a rumblings of wonder if someone has just hacked the site and is screwing around with it…and low and behold, that old frustration rises again.
i was once in a punk band called SL*TF*CK and we managed ourselves better than this…

Good God people, get a hold of yourselves. This is just a web site. Anger, frustration? If you let an issue with a once great website get to you like this, time to turn off that computer and go outside! Take a walk, go ride your bike, go buy some fruits and veggies at the local market, plant a tree, visit a museum, hug your loved ones, bake a cake, whatever…
Of course the whole situation with the site is next to ridiculous, but please don’t throw yourself in front of an oncoming train or off a bridge, there is life after Resexcellence. Step back from the computer and go outside live life for real, mmmkay?

i just dropped in after a couple of years to see if the site was up, and guess what? it’s still this pointless blog shit. even if you had just kept the forum open and killed the mainsite, resexcellence would be a really useful and productive place for modding the mac GUI.
whoever the f**k owns this place is clearly a tard, even the most slack, stoned, lazy mac lover would have done SOMETHING with this place in the last 3 years.
Who needs proof? We have the occasional innocuous blog entry! That should be enough for anyone.

Was a good site, btw, but now it seems that resex became a kind of chat/blog/forum….
Having read a little bit through the postings/comments, I’m wondering, if something is really going on here.
OR: is the whole stuff here just a fake, getting people trapped to believe something should happen….? Maybe, all this BuriedCaesars, Dougs, Tomhammacs, Avis and other names publishing comments here are just as unreal as is the site progress, being the one and same person…?

I don’t know…. I realize that a lot of the old content may never get used. I realize them that the need for all the OS 9 stuff would be wasteful time and effort. But still, I would hate to see that there was no bridge, historically or emotionally, from the old to the new. It is important to remember that a lot of us learned a lot from the old site. It taught us how to tweek our Mac’s. It made us want to learn more sometimes then was on ResEx, and that as a learning tool, it was invaluable. In the 90′s we, the Mac Community, were still the pirates, the thumb-our-noses (and often worse) at anything and everything Windoze.
SO I guess my answer is to keep whatever you think has archival worth, but do not feel like everything from the old has to be powered up for the new site. We may not be the pirates anymore, but with each new OS X there will be a learning curve. And as it was in the past, RESEXCELLENCE can be, and will be the guiding light.
Good work to you all. We are anxiously awaiting the rebirth of a legend.

Nice to see a little life here again. I really miss this site. This entire project has taken too long, though. I used this site a great deal and loved coming here, contributing, and testing out new ideas and such from here.
Please get something up and running for us. I’m certain I speak for everyone!
I hate to say it but time has marched on. Resexcellence at one time could have kept up with it but years seperate it from it was and what is now.
I personally suggest giving up working on it and let it die a quiet and honorable death. Don’t try to bring it back to just have it die later from low traffic and a general lack of interest.
I believe that anyone that would have contributed anything useful to it has long left for greener, more active, pastures.

I can understand that you guys want to build the underlying structure for the site completely before launching into the world, but we have all been patiently waiting for our mac gui fix. Res-Ex is dead. Unsanity’s programmers are supposedly working on it, but Unsanity still has not been able to update their own software to be compatible with Leopard. I have not come across any other software company that has not been able to update their programs, and now they also are the only ones that can not just put up a web site. It’s not that difficult people!! If you are having trouble why don’t you go down to the local grade school and hire a ten year old to do it. Please, just get the job jobbed already!!!
Maybe a few snapshots of theming at each OS release. That is all. I mean, some people might not know what kaliedoscope did. So, three or four snapshots might get that point across. That is all. It is not necessary to have 300 images.

I still don’t entirely understand why this entire site had to be shut down just so it could be “redesigned”.
I’ve seen countless websites go through redesigns without closing shop for even a day… and many sites I’ve seen go through multiple redesigns since resex closed, some that are even run by a single person!
To believe you, I think I need to see something only the owner of this site / the actual administrators of this site can do: something! Turn your blog into a forum, delete this entire site, add a file, change the blog theme. Anything to know. Although… hackers can get anywhere. I would contact by email to see, but the whois database has their information blocked. Oh well. This site is dead anyways. Like the messiah. Might come back in my lifetime, might not.

As much as I hate to say this, since I was a big fan of ResEx back “in the day”, I don’t see much point to keeping the old screenshots as part of the main site. Maybe you want to stick them in an archive (or heck, post ‘em to Flickr?) but don’t worry too much about keeping them as part of the primary site.
And for the love of God, would you put a more user-friendly colour scheme up here? This white-on-black stuff is killing my eyes.

Anyone who posts blog “updates” here and/or has a colored box around his post is a stupid n00b.
right now we are about 80 percent finished with our decision phase regarding the older snapshots section. we are leaning towards keeping no more then 100 snapshots per os release. we feel this is a good compromise. again, it will take a few months to go through all those old photos and pick the best ones, so hang in there!
another potential stumbling block is the decision on what fonts to use on the new resex, some of us like serif fonts, others sans.

hey guys, it’s almost the 1 year anniversary since the last real blog update here, the one about the new engine. (aka, the world’s deepest digging hole)
I don’t know about that last post, felt like I should say something, but really had nothing to say. My previous post is the result of the lack there of. Of course now I have something to say in that I am explaining my lack of anything to say and the random non-tent it produced. SoooooOOOoo… Yea…. um… BOOT TO THE HEAD!!!

we finally have finished writing the html to the index page. we will be working on some really cool flash animations to be used in the menus. we expect these to be done by july of next year. also, in the coming months a few of us will go off and create a “team” to decide on color combos for the new site.
The only turkeys are the ones who keeping reading here! Turkey day’s gone and so has resexcellence – get with the program!

This site ranks right up there with applerecon.com. Checking to see if any content is up every few months reminds me of how people keep watching SNL every so often because they remember what it was like 30 years ago (and hasn’t been anything but garbage for the last what, 25 years?). Hope springs eternal, I guess.

I come here every few months – it’s just asexciting every time. Do you guys really think this place has the potential to reemerge as the best mac modding resources site? If you honestly do, that must mean that you guys have hidden away all the best resources from the rest of us, stubbornly refusing to release them to the rest of the mac universe through any other site than this, that died literally years ago.
If that is not the case, i.e. you are not just plain lazy complainers, release your stuff through other sites and start your own website linking to all the best resources. Because that is really what ResEx did. Few things, if any, were released exclusively there. What ResEx did was to provide easy access to what one would have to visit a hundred sites to find without its service.
So stop complaining and start being constructive and productive instead. If you put as much energy into making a good website with links to the best resources as you’ve without results put into whining about this site’s former glory and present all but inexistence, you’ll have a site up and running within two months. Which is probably less time than will pass before the next post on this site will be up.
Leave this site to die and make a better one yourselves.
Now I’ve filled my visiting quota on this site for the next couple of months. I sincerely hope you’ve found something better to do with your spare time than hanging around here when I stop by next time.

Thats funny, I come here for the fun of the nontent (although I do remember what Resex was). Resexcellence.com is now and until the end of its time, the official home of nontent. To me, Resex has become enjoyable avenue of comical relief.
The Digging has made great progress into the ever deepening realm of nontent and will continue until the hostmonster dictates otherwise. The enlighten Resexcellence has passed and been long ago buried. Long Live the New world Nontent!

Dude, I used to love ReEx… I remember when it first faded to black and I was stunned that a site seemed so alive could vaporize. I left the link in my homepage and visited a dozen times until I heard that the dork responsible for the remodeling decided to throw in the towel over some negative feedback. Then I visted today out of curiousity and you guys had me rolling. This nontent is crazy, this site is a black-hole!!! hahaha Keep up the digging.
I was once led to believe that this site might actually rise again as a major force in themy-stuff, but now I see it has evolved into to something new. Something little, yellow, different and better. And I am pleased.

The infinite abyss and no longer a light at the end of the tunnel. Your actually falling in a big hole and the light is gone. Its a matter of waiting til December 2012 comes and it really won’t matter. I understand that you are working four jobs I mean four jobs and raising 12 kids and having to care for 6 wifes and never knowing from one moment to the next if you are going to be able to think of a fraction of code to insert into the web site. The old version probably was what allowed the hackers access. At least this shows that there is some interest here, but probably only ’cause ResEx is stored on the same server as their other more profitable websites.

what was interesting about the hacked version of this site was that it was running for almost 4 weeks before it was fixed. a post on macthemes pointing out the ‘new look’ arab music friendly resexcellence was locked quickly and has since been deleted from their forums.
i guess someone upset an admin or mod at macthemes.

Guys the archives of this site contained countless resources used by the historical mac community. I know that the modern trend is to discard the past or at least trivialize the value of it. The current Mac community has excepted many new members without the experience and joy of the deep levels of exploration and discovery provided by the resource editor and the hex editor.
However,
Speaking for my self and perhaps some in this community I would be willing to pay $100 for a copy of the archives that existed at the point that this site was taken over. No pressure to continue your efforts or to usurp the material, I just still have use for a lot of the content that was available only here. Please email me and I will gladly send you a TeraByte HDD to copy the archive onto.

Uno developers, at Interacto.net said they were readying a theming solution with a beta coming out March ’10. It was posted on Macthemes forums, but as you know the mods over there are associated with Vaporware Façade and Architect, they deleted the post over the weekend. I can’t find anything on Twitter, MacNN forums, Macrumors etc. If somebody can find any info about this, please post here.
And keep an eye on interacto.net in the near future.

There hasn’t been an update since 2008. At least put something back here, I don’t really care if it’s organized (organize it later!) There are historical files now lost because of a developer that has stopped doing his job

Resexcellence was one of the best sites on the net back in Mike’s day… but just became a sad joke.
I used come here to read the “we are working on getting this site back to what it was” bullshit but now it is just silly…
Years have past since I was last here and NOTHING has changed… why don’t you guy(s) just pack it in and let someone else have this little slice of hard drive space and finally let resexcellence RIP…
I don’t want to sound like a smartass. It’s your site and you can do what you want with it and it’s none of anyones business. There are a lot of people who still remember and miss the old Resexcellence and it would be nice to know where this might be going.
Again the owners aren’t under any obligation. Is it money? Time? Money and time? If it’s money I’m certain if you get a figure and set up a way to donate many of us would do that.
I’m just a curious Macintosh user from way back and would like to see this site come back and thrive again.

Have wondered about the activity level of this site, myself. Even if it’s because the admin(s) has/have real jobs which are interfering with more progress, it’d be good to know where the progress is (Hey, even a cm of progress would be useful news, so to speak!).

that’s our thought at this point as well. much of the content is largely useless now, but we’re moving for historical preservation of the mac gui scene.
Definitely keep them. Just stick them in an Archive section. Historically they’re important.
Okay, time to move on from the old and give us something new – the Mac has moved on, it’s time for you to do the same, unless the intent is to have a site for the Retro-Mac crowd. Please, don’t over-think things. This site evolved into what it was over several years – just start simple again, and build. Asking about the old stuff will just confuse some and slow down the process of bringing this site back to life.

Yes, of course they should stay. Every ResEx user who ever sent in a snapshot will love to look at their really old setup. Also, it is stuff like the snapshots that made ResEx different from other similar sites. The personal touch.
In fact, you should keep _all_ the old material, as ResExcellence is a huge piece of computer/OS history.
(And since when were the snapshots “useful”? Firstmost, they were fun!)
Shouldn’t your first priority be to bring up a great site that lets creative people share and showcase their work, and only /then/ worry about retrofitting the old stuff in there? Sure, it’s interesting for nostalgic reasons—especially to those of us who remember names like Arlo Rose—but the site is sure to be a monumental let-down unless you get the core functionality right, and worse, it’s nothing at all unless you /publish something/.
The bright light and sounds of these shallow potholes are still disconcerting as opposed to the dark and familiar silence of out great fissure that reaches nearly to the center of the earth.
Keep in in an archive area. In other words, put this minor issue to the side and move on with more important development issues so that we can have ResEx back again.
I have never been that interested in those kinds of shots. Delete it forever? No, it will be useful some years from now to someone. But move to the new site? Absolutely not. (In my humble opinion)
I vote for keeping them in some kind of archives. It doesn’t have to be fancy or well-integrated with the site as such, but as my dad noted once, pictures are often best if they convey the feeling of nostalgia
I vote for: get that section set up & functional so that people can add new snapshots after the site re-opens, then gradually add in the old stuff after the heavy-lifting on the rest of the site is done

I’m not sure if Brian Wilson is still involved with Unsanity, so maybe that’s why we’ve not seen any progress with ResEx. I would think if Phil Ryu WAS involved, he has long since moved on in favor of actually making money with MacHeist. MyDreamApp imploded because there was really no money involved, so I suspect this site is the same.

Whatever the case, some sign of actual ownership of this site would be nice (like changing the graphics, or God forbid actually getting a live site up and running). But until then, I refuse to believe anything at all is happening with ResEx.
i’m with most on here… just get it up and running, the content will come in and then you have all the time you want to sift through and ask about the old stuff.

If you let an issue with a once great website get to you like this, time to turn off that computer and go outside! I don’t know…. I realize that a lot of the old content may never get used. I realize them that the need for all the OS 9 stuff would be wasteful time and effort. But still, I would hate to see that there was no bridge, historically or emotionally, from the old to the new. It is important to remember that a lot of us learned a lot from the old site. It taught us how to tweek our Mac’s. It made us want to learn more sometimes then was on ResEx, and that as a learning tool, it was invaluable. In the 90′s we, the Mac Community, were still the pirates, the thumb-our-noses (and often worse) at anything and everything Windoze.
SO I guess my answer is to keep whatever you think has archival worth, but do not feel like everything from the old has to be powered up for the new site. We may not be the pirates anymore, but with each new OS X there will be a learning curve. And as it was in the past, RESEXCELLENCE can be, and will be the guiding light.
Good work to you all. We are anxiously awaiting the rebirth of a legend.

Nice to see a little life here again. I really miss this site. This entire project has taken too long, though. I used this site a great deal and loved coming here, contributing, and testing out new ideas and such from here.

I hate to say it but time has marched on. Resexcellence at one time could have kept up with it but years seperate it from it was and what is now.
I personally suggest giving up working on it and let it die a quiet and honorable death. Don’t try to bring it back to just have it die later from low traffic and a general lack of interest.
I believe that anyone that would have contributed anything useful to it has long left for greener, more active, pastures.
Just get the new site up and running and then add the old content in afterwards. Like mentioned earlier, just make an archive section (at some point) and put the stuff there. I can understand that you guys want to build the underlying structure for the site completely before launching into the world, but we have all been patiently waiting for our mac gui fix. The delay has been too long; you killed it. The Mac community has moved on. You’ve lost whatever momentum there was. Interest has pretty much waned, as has the level of goodwill.

Res-Ex is dead. Unsanity’s programmers are supposedly working on it, but Unsanity still has not been able to update their own software to be compatible with Leopard. I have not come across any other software company that has not been able to update their programs, and now they also are the only ones that can not just put up a web site. It’s not that difficult people!! If you are having trouble why don’t you go down to the local grade school and hire a ten year old to do it. Please, just get the job jobbed already!!!

As much as I hate to say this, since I was a big fan of ResEx back “in the day”, I don’t see much point to keeping the old screenshots as part of the main site. Maybe you want to stick them in an archive (or heck, post ‘em to Flickr?) but don’t worry too much about keeping them as part of the primary site.
And for the love of God, would you put a more user-friendly colour scheme up here? This white-on-black stuff is killing my eyes.

right now we are about 80 percent finished with our decision phase regarding the older snapshots section. we are leaning towards keeping no more then 100 snapshots per os release. we feel this is a good compromise. again, it will take a few months to go through all those old photos and pick the best ones, so hang in there!
another potential stumbling block is the decision on what fonts to use on the new resex, some of us like serif fonts, others sans.

Checking to see if any content is up every few months reminds me of how people keep watching SNL every so often because they remember what it was like 30 years ago (and hasn’t been anything but garbage for the last what, 25 years?). I come here every few months – it’s just asexciting every time. Do you guys really think this place has the potential to reemerge as the best mac modding resources site? If you honestly do, that must mean that you guys have hidden away all the best resources from the rest of us, stubbornly refusing to release them to the rest of the mac universe through any other site than this, that died literally years ago.
If that is not the case, i.e. you are not just plain lazy complainers, release your stuff through other sites and start your own website linking to all the best resources. Because that is really what ResEx did. Few things, if any, were released exclusively there. What ResEx did was to provide easy access to what one would have to visit a hundred sites to find without its service.
So stop complaining and start being constructive and productive instead. If you put as much energy into making a good website with links to the best resources as you’ve without results put into whining about this site’s former glory and present all but inexistence, you’ll have a site up and running within two months. Which is probably less time than will pass before the next post on this site will be up.
Leave this site to die and make a better one yourselves.
Now I’ve filled my visiting quota on this site for the next couple of months. I sincerely hope you’ve found something better to do with your spare time than hanging around here when I stop by next time.

It’s amazing how astronomically boneheaded Symeon is. The fact that he *claims* to have read the posts and *still* thinks we’re here complaining and hoping for the site to be resurrected just goes to show how mind-numbingly uninformed he is.
No one… I repeat, *no one* here has any faith, hope or belief that this site is “coming back.” No one here is a *whiner* or *complainer.* That ship has sailed years ago.
Additionally, No one… I repeat, *no one* here has decided NOT to move on to other Mac GUI sites and/or MAKE their own Mac GUI sites. We’ve all gone on to bigger and better things years ago.
The only reason why any of the repeat visitors/posters (Notice I said REPEAT, not NEW) are here is for pure amusement only: We enjoy coming here and seeing just how long these forums can go, and revel in the folly of this site’s existence as an empty shell and monument to the previous owner’s failure. It’s amazing how astronomically boneheaded Symeon is. The fact that he *claims* to have read the posts and *still* thinks we’re here complaining and hoping for the site to be resurrected just goes to show how mind-numbingly uninformed he is.
No one… I repeat, *no one* here has any faith, hope or belief that this site is “coming back.†No one here is a *whiner* or *complainer.* That ship has sailed years ago.
Additionally, No one… I repeat, *no one* here has decided NOT to move on to other Mac GUI sites and/or MAKE their own Mac GUI sites. We’ve all gone on to bigger and better things years ago.
The only reason why any of the repeat visitors/posters (Notice I said REPEAT, not NEW) are here is for pure amusement only: We enjoy coming here and seeing just how long these forums can go, and revel in the folly of this site’s existence as an empty shell and monument to the previous owner’s failure. Think of it as an amusing social anomaly.
(As a funny side note, he said, “If you put as much energy into making a good website with links to the best resources as you’ve without results put into whining about this site’s former glory and present all but inexistence, you’ll have a site up and running within two months.â€

Dude, I used to love ReEx… I remember when it first faded to black and I was stunned that a site seemed so alive could vaporize. I left the link in my homepage and visited a dozen times until I heard that the dork responsible for the remodeling decided to throw in the towel over some negative feedback. Yes, it would be nice to have the old screen shots just for a good record of previous GUIs. Old GUI still have some use and perhaps are better to study than the more complicated ones today.

We hit China, apparently in the main hole. Can the loyal, faithful, lamely addicted tenants of this website cause every hole to reach China? Time will tell. We have a lot of work to do.
It’s the software upgrade to WordPress which caused the error.
But why upgrade WordPress on a site that hosts nothing but nontent?
The old version probably was what allowed the hackers access. At least this shows that there is some interest here, but probably only ’cause ResEx is stored on the same server as their other more profitable websites.
what was interesting about the hacked version of this site was that it was running for almost 4 weeks before it was fixed. a post on macthemes pointing out the ‘new look’ arab music friendly resexcellence was locked quickly and has since been deleted from their forums.
i guess someone upset an admin or mod at macthemes.

Guys the archives of this site contained countless resources used by the historical mac community. I know that the modern trend is to discard the past or at least trivialize the value of it. The current Mac community has excepted many new members without the experience and joy of the deep levels of exploration and discovery provided by the resource editor and the hex editor.
However,
Speaking for my self and perhaps some in this community I would be willing to pay $100 for a copy of the archives that existed at the point that this site was taken over. No pressure to continue your efforts or to usurp the material, I just still have use for a lot of the content that was available only here. Please email me and I will gladly send you a TeraByte HDD to copy the archive onto.

Considering how little space text takes up and the fact that storage space is cheap I would say we’d need to produce millions of pages of comments to even start putting a dent in the space available.

Uno developers, at Interacto.net said they were readying a theming solution with a beta coming out March ’10. It was posted on Macthemes forums, but as you know the mods over there are associated with Vaporware Façade and Architect, they deleted the post over the weekend. I can’t find anything on Twitter, MacNN forums, Macrumors etc. If somebody can find any info about this, please post here.
And keep an eye on interacto.net in the near future.

Any work done while using the old software will be useless when Apple
