@ Miriam: Okay, so, I know that ResEx has a pretty well established community, and from reading the comments on the few posts here I understand that the community wants their beloved forums back; but make the forums prematurely available just for the sake of people being able to ask “questions about their Macs and such they want to ask to ResEx’s on-line community”? There are plenty of active Mac user communities online where answers to just about any question relevant to Mac geekery may be easily found.

I don’t think having forums before ResEx comes back “fer real” is a good idea. It will just lead to trouble. Last time there were forums, they were flooded with people moaning about the loss of their favorite Mac site and how it was being mangled.

Dog Cow, resex has always had forums, as far as i know. the forums will most likely be coming back, with the rest of the site. it’s as important, if not more important, than getting new content.

I’ve been visiting ResEx since early 2004 and I’ve never “seriously” participated in the forums.

Some people may want ResEx forums, since that’s all they think to do, all they’re used to. But that’s not the point of ResEx. ResEx is about the hacking articles and the gui downloads.

All the old-timers know and realize this; it seems the “newbies” don’t, especially since ResEx has not “always had forums.”

While I have no objection to having forums on ResEX, even though I will probably never participate in them, I think that based on previous occurences, having them before the site is fully functionable is a BAD IDEA!

I agree with you, Dog Cow. I’ve been a visitor of ResEx since around 2000 and never really participated in the forums. I doesn’t hope that the new site will focus mainly on the forums as many community based sites does now days. That would sure be the easiest way for the new developers, but nothing like the old ResEx that we all love so much.

i’m no “newbie”. i’ve been coming to resex for many years and it’s always had forums. forums are required, for this site. without the forums, their wouldn’t be a place to ask about the various hacks and different gui changes you can do. resex is a community. take the forums away and you take away the communities way to communicate to each other.

Maybe I’m missing something, but I don’t see anyone saying there will be no forums. Am I right? All I see is someone saying it may be wise to leave them down while the site is being reconstructed because of problems that were happening with the prior owners of the site. Also, there is no rule against asking any GUI related questions right here in these threads. It has been done a couple of times now.

I’m really looking forward to seeing the new site when it comes up. Brian and company are going to do a great job!

@ Matt – you’re right, nobody has said “their will be no forums”, though some are insisting on not doing forums and just get the content up. the forums are required, once the site goes back up, due to switchers and new people, getting into certain aspects of the OS. for example, i recall seeing people asking simple things, like how to replace icons or use the icons they downloaded. instead of searching through years of mod pages, it’s just easier to ask things on the forums, thats all.

i know the site isn’t supposed to be a forum run site, but that’s what it had been turning into, which wasn’t a bad thing. people were getting their work looked at and given suggestions, before they officially uploaded it to the content of the site.

i just hope resex doesn’t become like other mac sites, like macnn, macgui and a few others. resex needs to come out back as the #1 mac visited site.

i believe that one of the old forum head moderators told me that they were going to do a mass email, to everyone who was registered to the forum. not sure if they will in fact do that or not, but it’s an idea.

i’m not going to go into details as to why i dislike macgui here, but my point is, any site that has such mass resources and os mod information, should have forums to discuss them and any possible problems with the documentation it provides. that said, forums should be available, as soon as any files are up and available for download. though given the amount of time resex has been in it’s current condition, i’m hoping when it comes back to having files available, it’ll be back with all sections available.

And I’m not going to go into details why I’ll have nothing to do with your sort.

Um… woah here. Not that I should be needing to moderate here, but, um… aren’t things getting a little out of hand between Cruciarius and Dog Cow? Perhaps lighten up a bit? No need to become enemies before we even get a site back up online.

Now, as far as my comment goes, I was actually thinking of suggesting that there be forums up ASAP. It’s obviously up to the new management, but my thought was that it would be nice to have a good way (not just a mediocre way) to get help on old mods and discuss new ones. It’s nice to have a place where you can ask specific questions, and get answers, or collaborate with others on new projects. Sure, you can do it here, but it sorta feels like you’re getting in the way of the main point here, which was (in my understanding) discussing the new site. And, as far as the “people moaning about the loss of their favorite Mac site and how it was being mangled,” I would think that a nice message at the top that says “we are working on getting the site back online the right way, and will put it up as soon as it is ready” would help to deter those folks. Perhaps you disagree, but… In many ways, the forum was becoming the key part of ResEx for me.

Back in the MC days (who else here has been around that long?), ResEx had a lot of really stellar mods. Sure, a lot of it was submitted graphics and stuff, but there were a lot of just plain “this is a mod and how you do it” things too. Now, perhaps I should have said Classic days, not MC days, because it wasn’t necessarily the fault of those who followed after him, but as things progressed, the mods somehow became more and more scarce, and the site became more about the content. Don’t get me wrong. It’s not the fault of Scott or anyone (oh gosh… i’m forgetting who all we’ve had now) so much as the nature of the OS. Old style mods were “you open such and such a file in ResEdit, change these hex numbers, and paste this picture here”. New style mods were starting to become a “you download this picture and this app and use the app to install the picture.” Useful for my grandma maybe, but not what I come to ResEx for. Like I said, it’s not anyone’s fault in particular. It’s just a combination of
1. Mac OS X is considerably more open than Mac OS 9. you can change a lot of things with just a plain text editor. A lot more can be done trivially using the dev tools.
2. The fact that there are dev tools makes it easier and cheaper for people to write programs. And so we end up with a flood of programs that basically do your mods for you with no interaction whatsoever.

I guess what I’m trying to say here is that the New ResEx that I’d like to see is one with more than just the pretty pictures. Sure, go ahead and let people submit art, and let people write apps to mod the OS. But what I’d like to see is ResEx becoming a place again where people who work out the mods come to hang out. Where there are lots of pages that describe how to do mods by hand, where people are pushing the boundaries of moding, and where those people who write the apps to do mods automatically hang out. In short, a place that covers what lies underneath, as well as the shiny stuff on top. (meaning terminal tricks, programming tutorials, mods with hex edit, more detailed instructions on mods with the dev tools, etc).

Alright, that’s more than long enough. I wish writing for English class was this easy.

oh yeah… and, for the management…
posts more often would be appreciated I think. Even if they’re just more “we’re still working on it.” Maybe you could give us more details? We’re tech geeks. patience is a virtue, not a reality.

@ Ruben – currently, what you see is what you get, since resex is under construction. you can try other sites, like interfacelift.com and macthemes.net to get themes. macthemes.net has a ton of mods and other themes, only in their forums, so it takes a little searching.

Everything is a delicate balancing act.

They can wait a while and give us stupendous news.

Or they can give us daily updates that would probably be as exciting as watching a programmer type!

So in the end, the question is: was it worth the wait?

I must say “yes.” I am willing to believe that ResEx will come back to its full glory.

i know that resex is now owned by the guys who own macthemes.net, but it’s a little odd, to me, that they are using a dark page, with curtains on both sites, while they work on the next revision of the sites. does this mean both sites will look about the same? i really hope that resex doesn’t inherit macthemes.net’s horizontal scrolling.

Coming from the same brain, it would be logical to conclude there shall be similarities.

Perhaps we all just need to do to get more updates from the “Guys Behind The Magic Red Curtain” is be sure to put up more posts than the previous update so they’ll feel some pressure to put up another update, with maybe another tease or two…

And I hope most who read my earlier comment about comments realized it was a completely frivolous tongue-in-cheek, though apparently weak, attempt at some levity and a gentle nudge in the direction of those behind the “Magic Red Curtain”.

This site has been on my “check regularly” set of links for more than 5 years now – I enjoyed the heyday, took advantage of the fruits provided, saw the slow decline and change of hands, alternately clapped and groaned through some of the efforts to “improve” the site both visually and content-wise and then witnessed its abrupt demise and descent now into the darkness of rebuilding.

I, for one, sincerely hope that the end-result, no matter how long it takes, is a Phoenix-rising-from-the-ashes type of rebirth and resurgence into prominence in the Mac community.

At the very least, I want to see that red curtain at the top of the page open wide and let us see! Hopefully the frog doesn’t finish his song and land on the stage floor before that can happen…

(And if anyone understands that last obscure reference, I tip my hat to you.)

Is it really that difficult to say,”We can’t do it”? At least MacMonkeies said that. They can’t go on with their site and I do understand and respect them. MacThemes.net has been “under construction” for going on 2 years now. They only recently took down the main site (which hadn’t been updated in 2 years) and put up the coming soon graphic. I don’t think Phill has anything to do with MacThemes anymore, other than he was the founder. All his sites have gone completely dormant.

We had nothing worth visiting this site for going on two years. Now the latest owners are suffering the wrath of those who all of the sudden (despite being vocal about how bad ResEx was in the recent past) think it needs to get back to it’s former glory RIGHT NOW!

If ResEx turns out to be anything at all like the other sites Phill and the gang come up with, it will take a LONG time to get completed and will lack content shortly after anyway. So why not sit back, chill out and just wait.

Coming back every day to “check in” isn’t going to get it done any faster, and most likely these comments are completely ignored (if seen at all) by those in control anyway.

Ya know, I used an open source CMS (see e107.org) to build a site.. it took five minutes to install, about 30 minutes to tweak the built-in addons and it was ready for the world.
Tacking on some third party plugins gave the place a photo gallery that’s second to none and a slew of other cool features.

The point I want to make is this: the site was up and spiffy in ‘no time’. In the amount of time that we’ve been seeing these ‘coming soon’ updates something similar could have happened here. It’s not like all the old files have to appear from the ‘get go’ for the place to return to functionality.

I realize that the people involved in the project have other irons in the fire that take precedent but even still.. a few hours time could see the place back in operations if someone would take the time to climb out of whatever corner they backed up into with regards to the ‘look & feel’ of this place.

Launch something and tweak it later. At this point probably the only outside people paying attention to the place are old hardcore fans of the old site. And like the academic world it’s publish or die so far as a sites existance goes.

JMO of course. You guys own the domain… a pity it’s lanquishing.

I think “datguy” makes a good point. Perhaps too much emphasis is being placed on the “design” of the site – a problem that MacThemes.net has suffered through for years now. ResExcellence has always been an “ugly” site. There was never anything pretty about it. It was the content that brought people to the site. Somewhere along the way, people seem to have forgotten that.

Datguy and Jim make excellent points. I can’t believe how long it’s taking this site to get back on its feet. Sure, some of the frustration people feel is being expressed in (typically web-style) rudeness – but you *ask* for that if you keep doing rah-rah announcements and then provide NOTHING in the way of progress, or even updates on progress, for months on end. Tracker’s responses are no more bizarre than those who keep posting ‘Yeah – rooting for your guys! It’s going to be fabulous! I just know it!’ comments; when there’s little evidence that anything whatsoever is happening.

What are you guys *doing*? Translating everything into Martian? Hand-painting an interface based on the Voynich manuscript?

As Jim notes, Resex was always a kind of cobbled-together looking affair. Its USP was *CONTENT*. The longer this goes on, the less of the pre-existing stuff will even be relevant to current modding of the OS. So just get a new place up! Resex was a resource, a place to share information and ideas – not a brag-point for the people running it. Yes, those of us who turn up to bitch about lack of progress once in a while *could* just stop visiting the site and go off and find a life. But many of us learned a lot from this site over the years, and felt part of something.

If the current crowd aren’t ever going to get anywhere with that, then they should at least let the old place have a decent burial, finally. Either finally *do* something, or stop propping up the corpse.

even though the growls page works, it’s a hideous wide page. exactly what i was afraid of, when the macthemes guys took over resex. it is a nice clean design though… just far too wide. i hate having to scroll to the sides.

That Growl page looks like the one that existed while Scott Chitwood was still running the site, and it doesn’t look at all bad to me. Maybe it’s cause I have a wide screen Mac.

Getting a database working appropriately will be the key to making Resexcellence a good and easily nav-able website. I like to use ColdFusion for its easibility.

Making your own stuff takes a long time. The current version of my site, Mac GUI 5, I started in April of 2006 and it didn’t go online until September 2006. And now, I’m still adding things and tweaking stuff. It takes months of work to get things how you want, even if you are using other open-source software to build-upon. You can have a site that looks and works like everyone else’s in an hour, or take the time to build your own.

No matter how this site ends up looking, it’s highly doubtful there will be no one who will take one look at the first page and immediately look for the nearest forum and start grousing and complaining and moaning and groaning about how it could have been done in the first place and it would certainly, and instantly, be better, “if only…”

Sadly, it’s inevitable.

Dunno about looking like ‘everyone elses’. Mine Certainly doesn’t look like any of the default out of the box sites that come pre-packaged. But perhaps that’s because I’ve been hacking together sites pre HTML 1.0, dunno.

It takes however long it takes a person depending on how familiar they are with the tools their working with and if the technology supports their vision. It can take days, week or months.

Regardless, my prior post stands. Especially when it comes to your user base.

Just a response to all the comments about Resexcellence and Macthemes. Firstly, the sites are not being combined in any way shape or form, both will help support the other grow, while bringing more life to this already wonderful community. The fact that both of the sites now maintain the same placeholder design was just a coincidence. Secondly, MacThemes.Net and the new Resexcellence will/are not run by the same people. Though Phill is involved in both projects he will not be running MacThemes after the relaunch. I’d be glad to answer anymore question.

Komisar – I’ve been reading about the “relaunch” over at MacThemes. The site hasn’t been updated in years and you (not you personally, but the “ownership”) have gone through how many coders now? The last I read from you, there is still nobody to code the site. Why do you guys (and I’m genuinely interested in your answer) insist on “redesigning” everything? MacThemes was perfectly fine the way it was, it just lacked content. ResExcellence was, well it was butt-ugly but nobody cared because we just came for the content.

The so called “Delicious Generation” is so obsessed with the way things appear that you forget what keeps people there… CONTENT! I don’t care how good it looks, if there’s nothing new every few days at least, most people will not return.

I think part of the idea of the redesign (at least here) is to make it easier for them to maintain content so that we’ll continue to get frequent updates once the site’s up. That, plus the fact that it looks like they intend to use fully compliant XHTML1.1 and CSS will be the things I look forward to. as far as what it actually looks like… meh… I just hope they’re not wasting time on that bit. And yes, doing the site from scratch will take a while, but (aside from the added flexibility of doing things yourself) there’s just something nice about knowing exactly how everything works that only comes from building it from the ground up.

That said, for those of you who’re complaining about CONTENT, why not start posting links to some of your own on other places? we’ve got a way to post links now, so why not start having fun. For example, brownie points to anyone who can figure out how to add a “block cookies from this site” menu item in Camino. Double points if you can figure it out before I do.

cuz I have enough ‘script kiddies’ and zombied machines trying to knock the place down as it is?
I mean I’d love valid traffic, but the few publicly posted links are generating almost constant intrusion attempts, (i.e., attempts to mess with the site code or the server itself).

Is that a chickensh*t excuse or just being prudent? I think it’s just a fact of life on the web these days.

Cruciarius – nice pointer, but I can already do it faster than that while camino is running, through the prefs… it’s just it would be much nicer not to have to pull up the prefs every time I want to block or unblock cookies from a site (actually, I generally keep them blocked by default and just unblock for sites that need them and I’m ok with having set them).

About that Growl page… it’s there as a courtesy to the Growl project. The design is ripped from what was a separate project we had going. It has nothing in common with our current resex design and goals.

Apologies for the slow progress, but again, we want it to fit our vision and nothing less. And remember, this is a side project for all of us involved. We all have full time + work to do besides this site.

It is called wishful thinking… Everyone that used to love this site would like to believe that some day it will actually re-open and have new content. With the (approximately) monthly crumb of an update, that hope was kept alive. Now it seems like little more than a repeat of the last trading of hands the site went through.

I’ll try and explain this as easily and quickly as possible. Firstly, we didn’t decide to “redesign” everything because for the purporse of just having a better looking design, or backend, or forums. We did this because we had too. The backend that we used to run MT off of (MovableType 3.12) was actually broken on our server, and thus we were unable to update anything. The forums were also an issue, and had be subject to a series of maclicious attacks which crippled serveral areas of the code – which we have you to fix. The design itself, in my opinion, was outdate, and we had had a design in the works since June. Yes, we’ve had numerous problems with coders, the last coder didn’t follow the guidelines or timeframe we gave him, and constantly lied about how much had been completed or we had left.

However, we now have a reliable coder who has already begun coding, and is under contract with us. This contract is making the coder stick to strict guidelines and timelines. Regardless, we have always known that content is the major issue when it comes to running these sites. Granted GUI customization has seen a decline, but there is still more3 than enough content. We have lots of surprises and articles already in the works.

Sorry for posting off topic again, just wanted to answer a few questions. As for Resexcellence – these guys know what they are doing, and when they know what they are doing they do things well. Everyone just stay patient, and I’m sure a new revamped Resexcellence will be gracing your computer’s desktop.

you can get the windows cursors to work with mighty mouse (unsanity’s cursor changing haxie). i forget how, but i’m sure it says how, on unsanity’s site. if you can’t find it there, i’m sure mr. google knows.

I didn’t know it could take so long to code and design a website. I also think the MacTheme guys consider every single second of wait hyping the lunch. That sucks very much. I hope it’s worth the wait.

ResExcellence died somewhere between when Mac OS X was released and when Michael Coyle left. You can spend 5 years flashing it up, but you can’t add more content relating to using ResEdit because there is no more content available. Resource forks, and everything else even down to type/creator codes have become obsolete, and hacking is not “graphical” like it used to be anymore because Macs don’t even run Mac OS anymore. They run Unix.

Hacking a Mac is now pretty much the same as hacking a Windows or *nix machine. Your only option is to split open big hex dumps and pick your way through.

Every now and then, something new for your old Mac might come up, like the Mac OS 8.5 – 9.2.2 theme I finished last summer. These are the only real things that can still “fit” into ResExcellence. Mac OS X terminal commands and all that stuff just isn’t related. To allow that is to change ResExcellence into something else entirely, which is apparently what you’re trying to do.

ResExcellence really should stick with Pre-OS X Mac stuff. Too bad it’ll be all aqua-style when it comes back. Mac OS X stuff does not belong at ResExcellence. It should be a completely different site for that stuff. ResExcellence should be about using ResEdit to edit Classic Mac OS resource forks.

I don’t understand why you people want to integrate Mac OS X into ResExcellence. Doing that only takes away from that which is, or was, the great ResExcellence. The Macintosh Garden still has the right idea.

while resedit was basically how resexcellence came to be, OS 9 and earlier, are dead. the only way to keep resex alive, is to continue on, with each new OS and how to mod it. thats what resex is all about. modding the GUI of the OS.

their are other similar apps, like resedit, for OS X, but they aren’t as useful anymore.

I agree with Cruciarius. I believe that ResExcellence was/is all about modifying one’s Macintosh computer formost, and though many things have changed in the coarse of it’s evolution I think the site has brilliantly continued on with that fine tradition after OSX came along even though resedit was on it’s way to being obsolete by way of this particular OS transition. Michael Coyle actually addressed this at the time that the change came around saying what I just had said… (in other words I’m paraphrasing/repeating his statement). So, OS 7, 8, 9 or 10… it doesn’t really matter what the name of the website is (that is just semantics really). Yes, this site was created to show us how to use resedit, but so what? Resedit is mostly dead now (yes, I know that there are still a few of us out there using it, but not the majority). The real story is that Resexcellence was made as a site that showed us how to make our computer unique to each of us. In other words, what matters is that there’s a community for those of us who want to find ways of customizing our GUI for the OS we are currently running. Maybe we aren’t hacking into the system resources like we used to (and sometimes totally screwing ourselves in the process) but the tradition of changing the stock look and way things work with what Apple gives us continues to go on and that’s good enough for me. OK… that’s my $0.02 worth. I’m looking forward to the return of this website. Nuf sed. I am now prepared to be torn limb from limb by those who disagree.

Guys, I have one thing to say to you: KISS. Keep It Simple Stupid.
That is a principle that has followed me for many years and has never let me down. Everyone would love to see a Web 2.0 style ResExcellence, but most of us would be satisfied with a wordpress powered Resexcellence with links to all the old content and to all the new content.

I can totally see where Ben Boldt is coming from. I agree that classic ResEditing was more fun than I’ve had modding OS X in a long time. But the fact is that almost no one uses Mac OS 9, and almost no one creates new content for it. If we limit ResEx to OS 9, that’s the end. Sure, a few people still create new content. We’ll get new content every 6 weeks. Unfortunately, that’s not really enough to keep many visitors. With no visitors, there isn’t likely to be much advertising revenue, and with no ad revenue, there’s no site. So sure, keep it OS 9 only, and in 2 years or less, there won’t be any money to keep the site going any longer, and it disappears.

OR, we could add in more Mac OS X style editing, and keep the OS 9 stuff. It’s not like we’re saying throw the old stuff out. Its not like you can’t continue to submit MOSS artwork if you like. But there will be other things to keep the rest of the mac world knocking at the door, and that will make sure the site stays online and that it is in fact possible to access all the old stuff without messing around at archive.org (which, while very nice, is slow, unreliable, and generally a pain). Even Macintosh Garden relies for hosting on the Underdogs, which clearly gets lots of hits and advertising money to keep the site afloat. But there’s a reason Macintosh Garden doesn’t have its own site, and there’s a reason it hasn’t been updated more than about oh… 3 times in the past 6 months.

That said, of course, I would like to disagree with a few other things Ben had to say. First “Hacking a Mac is now pretty much the same as hacking a Windows or *nix machine. Your only option is to split open big hex dumps and pick your way through.” This is not exactly the case. Yes, there are a lot of hex dumps… but then again, weren’t there before in ResEdit? And also, there are still resource files. Sure, they’re flipped into .rsrc files, but they exist. There is a minor problem that the only software out there for editing resources that’s as stable and versatile as ResEdit is Rescorcerer, which isn’t free. (or at least, that’s as far as GUI resource editors). Second “Mac OS X terminal commands and all that stuff just isn’t related.” Sure, they aren’t mods, and I generally agree that they don’t belong at ResEx. But, for example, the ‘defaults’ command can be used to set hidden prefs, which was one thing that you could (though it was almost never done) do with ResEdit. It would be nice to keep an archive some place of what exactly those hidden prefs are. And there are the Rez and DeRez developer tools. It would be nice, as well as in spirit, to have suggestions for people of how to use Rez and DeRez. Plus, we could build an archive of templates for different resource types to be included so that Rez and DeRez can actually effectively compile and decompile resource files. (ex. porting the layo template to the format DeRez uses). Also, interface builder is quite a useful tool that takes over many of the functions that used to be delegated to ResEdit, and as such, merits a section on it. Then there’s “Show package contents”. sure it’s simple, but there should be a page that tells people about it so they don’t get lost. and, as in the old days, it would be cool to keep a listing of useful, fun software.

And there’s always user art. It’d be nice if it weren’t mostly desktops and snapshots though. iTunes skins, icons, themes… that sort of stuff is still freaking awesome.

And I still want to see someone mod Extras.rsrc (and the appropriate nib file) so that when I restart my mac, I can go to system prefs and open the Appearance prefpane, and pull open the Appearance menu, and be able to pick say Red, or even, just perhaps, Doohickey for example. (Probably only Ben and I know what that is, but that’s OK)

1st off, dont ask about the name of my website, its just a random word. 2nd, I know this isnt exactly the place to be asking this, but, is there a GUI for OSX client to edit the apache httpd.conf file? I know there is iTools but i dont want to spen $350 just to be lazy and not edit them by hand. thanks ~kormsbee

so i came here to check for an update thinking about how longs its been tagged at the top saying “the new resexcellence” and how this isn’t really new anymore, this look has gotten old really really fast…but then i read Ben Boldt’s post and i still can’t stop the whirlwind spin it did to my brain. its almost been worth the shape that resex has been in for awhile just to get around to seeing that post. i’m thinking maybe ford should go back to making only model-t’s since thats their roots (course the t’s gas mileage was higher than some current cars so maybe there is something to that) but to think a website or company or anybody can’t shift their content some to meet the time is so silly to suggest i hope it was a really a joke. in fact only sporting os9 and earlier content might just kill this site faster than its currently going under.

and wasn’t resex’s slogan, something like “everything you need to customize your mac”? that would include any OS changes.

I guess I just sort of miss the way Macs used to be. My view may be a little skewed because of that.

I bet some old ResEx fans would like to try out Basilisk II if they haven’t already. It’s a Macintosh Quadra 700 emulator. (Like Dennis’ Mac in Jurassic Park.) You can install System 7 on it and hack away in ResEdit. It can emulate other Macs too, but I always emulate the Quadra 700. System 7.5.3 is a personal favorite although it will run up to 8.1.

i understand, ben. it’s like going from 10.3 to 10.4 or soon, to 10.5. their are changes that i just don’t want to the OS on my mac, so i stick with 10.3.

The delay between front page updates is increasing pretty closely to y=x^2. 1 day, 2 days, 4 days, 8 days, etc. Each delay is about twice the previous. We’re due for another post next month. Then in July. Then March 2008.

As y (time) approaches infinity, x (delay) also approaches infinity (rather than approaching some arbitrary number.) This suggests that after an infinite amount of time, the delay will no longer apply and therefore ResExcellence will be back up and running.

I hope you guys (and gals) haven’t lost faith yet! Granted it has been an extremely long wait, for both the new resexcellence and the new macthemes, but I can assure you it has not been in vain! Brian and the whole resex team have been hard at work trying to bring this site to you guys, so what if they are a little behind, but they are trying their best while dealing with numerous other things. To answer another thing that has been floating around here, MacThemes and Resexcellence are not owned by the same people, nor are they run by the same people. Both Resex and MT are going to be, in a sense, complimentary sites and both will be unique for their own reasons!

I also want to say that MT 2.0 is seriously right around the corner and (hopefully) will keep you all satisfied while Brian and the gang are trying to bring you guys a fantastic website! These guys are perfectionists, so if they are taking their time, it’s for good reasons!

I’ve been lurking around the site for a few months now, watching y’all quarrell. First of all, I’ve been laughing a lot. Many of you are pretty good at making other people seem stupid.
Second, I think you should all calm down a bit. Let the owners and developers work. If I was one of the developers, I would be really demoralized listening to you folks. I suggest you come with constructive critisism, instead of doing your best in making sure the site will never come to life again.
Of course, it would be appreciated with some updates more often.

Ps.: I know it sounds like I’m talking to everyone, but I’m aiming at the ones that only quarrell…

i would offer some constructive criticism if it was asked for, but there isn’t really anything to offer it about, except the tired plea asking for some updates more often…which seems to lead to more people being demoralized and more quarrellings.

Hard to offer con. crit. for a site that hasn’t changed in nearly two months, changed as in an update to the progress made. For real change you’d have to go back over half a year.

I mean what are we to say? Ooo the curtains are a lovely shade of red? I like the type face you use?

I see resex returning at some point, but if it’s one thing the last owers should have shown it’s that we like progress reports of more than “It’s gonna be great zomg! So many features ZOMGFE YOU WILL LURVE IT WHEN IT COMES”

If progress is indeed being made, tell us about it. Then we can offer up critique. Until then we’re left with the same old nothing.

Thank you for taking down that other dreadful but functional site (i just couldn’t stand the way it looked) and taking so long to get things together because, as we mac users, we all know it’s better to have nothing than something that’s not perfect.

This ia almost becoming fascinating. I’m starting to wonder if this is some kind of weird Reality TV premise: take a site down, promise loyal followers it’s coming back, and then do nothing for months and months and MONTHS – and see what happens. Calls for more constructive criticism of a website that doesn’t exist? Wow, now we’re getting weird. Believing in the re-birth of ResExcellence is becoming more and more like believing in UFOS. Nice idea, but the evidence isn’t stacking up too well, whatever the True Believers think. I don’t care how hard it – apparently – is to reconfigure this site in 3D or translate everything into Medieval Dutch or whatever it is that’s taking so long: putting up a couple-line update everry few weeks doesn’t call for much effort. And how hard would it be to start collating a list of people who want an email update when something actually crawls out of the swamp and declares itself a website? The level of responsiveness we’re seeing now is an indication of what it will be like when (if) it’s running; the speed of updates will work the same too. Given the moribund nature of the other sites run by these people, maybe this is proof of UFOs after all – and the developers have all been abducted…

This would be like a slow-motion train wreck except there isn’t even a train anymore… just the slow, sad sound of old fans of the site (like myself), fading into nothingness, baying and hooting in the night. I’m sure that if this site does ever re-emerge, I’ll hear about it. In the meantime, farewell guys.

It’s hard to offer constructive criticism when the only thing to criticize is the lack of “official” updates.

Like many others, I have no sympathy for those who only choose to criticize. The present owners of ResExcellence, like all their predecessors owe absolutely no “duty” to you, to me, nor to anyone else in regards to how often they provide updates on their progress nor when or even if they ever get ResX up and running. It’s not like we bought a service and then they failed to deliver. ResX (and other sites like it) are purely the result of enthusiastic and generous folks who were willing to stay up to all hours of the night in order to create a central “warehouse” to hold and distribute content contributed for free by other enthusiastic and generous folks. So if you’ve got a problem with waiting for ResX (however long it may take) then go create your own site to compete with it and stop whining like an ungrateful toddler.

Will there be a place for OS 9 programmers? Sort of an area that provides documentation, APIs, and forums for those focusing exclusively on OS 9? Apple themselves seem to lack this information, even though millions of their computers that run only on this system are still out there.

i had an email account on it, it was a very good place. but then it got worse and worse my account got deleted without any reason and now is something completely different.
i can see that my account is active again, but it is now a site account, not an email one… O_o

the resex that scott was running, was the last best resex. the guys after him, barely did anything, then left us.

spymac? i’m sorry, but that’s a horrid site. i used to be a member, but then a couple of the other members were being extremely rude to one of my friends on there, so my friend and i left. later on, i rejoined, since they offered web space. i tried to ask about the web space, in their chat box and all i got was people swearing at me and laughing. spymac is a very unfriendly community.

I finished Doohickey right when ResEx closed up. It’s fully-functional now, even with the centered percentage reading on the progress bar. I also fixed the weird bug that made the title bar really long sometimes. Other than that, anything that wasn’t done before is all done now, including all the uncommon elements.

I also found a new secondary coordinate type in the layo resource. There are two different size-o-matic (aka snap-to) options! The one we always knew was “inward” snapping and the new one I found is “ouward” snapping. For more information, ask if you’re interested.

Why kill the old site if you don’t have a site to replace it with??? It’s stupid…

Using DigitalColor Meter I have found the text here to be a light shade of gray. The values of R, B, and G are all 60%, the Actual 8bit values are 153, the Actual 16bit values are 39321, the Hex 8bit values are 99, the Hex 16bit values are 9999.

I’d list more, but I’m tired.

I think it’s kind of sad that this is the closest thing to an OS X GUI issue for the last few weeks, if not months, on this site.

A short post I made here with a link to a discussion elsewhere of how one of the new developers of this site has been connected – more than once – with dubious net vaporware, didn’t make it through the moderation process. Maybe this post won’t either. I think some people – possibly with the best intentions – bit off a little more than they could chew. When their own flagship sites aren’t showing an progress for months and months, what is the probability of something happening here?

Hey, look…good things take time. These people are doing this for free. They don’t HAVE to do this for you. I’m sure the site devs have other things that are more pressing to attend to.

Someone put a PayPal donate button on. If money is a hold up, people should put their money where their mouth is and donate to the cause. Then, development has no reason to hold back either.

I must say I am disappointed. The ResEx that was here before may not have been the original, but it was there. We’ve gone months without it now. This service was here for free before the calls for a change were made, and we are now waiting for something that may never come back. I am sorry, but I am done waiting. Maybe some day, I’ll rediscover this site when searching in the future, but for now, I’m not going to bother waiting for it; it is clearly a waste of my time.

Noir, that is true, but when you take control of a website that was still partly functioning and say that it’s gonna be great, and this and that will happen and that we’re rewriting it again…etc etc….and then dont say anything for over a month, u’ve gotta start wondering if they are really serious about taking this on. At least before this last move happened there was a forum where people could still discuss things. Now we just have to argue in the comments back and forth and wait for nothing to happen.

A status update is what most people are asking for at least. Just a status update will do and will stop the arguing for a while. You might be surprised, people might start encouraging the site on again. Then again, perhaps nothing is happening at all, so there is nothing to report except that nothing is happening. (Even that would be nice)

Enough ranting….when it’s done it’s done I guess. Just shouldn’t take on things if you ain’t gonna give it a real go.

Sorry, Noir, I’m kinda with Ben on this one. You’re 100% right that “good things take time,” and that’s why I never get insulting or rude when checking in here. That being said, it would be great to simply get some 411.

at least we get occasional updates. over at macthemes, they’ve had a “macthemes 2.0 coming soon” page for over a year, from what i hear. yes, good things take time, but i’ll bet you that once the new resex is done and up, some of us will probably making suggestions on how to change it. some of us have been coming to resex for many years and we’re not too happy with the condition resex is in right now.
i wonder… why take down the site, like they did? why not leave the site up and just give us occasional news updates? that way all the content is still there and they can go about updating the site, when they have time.

And if they are going to moderate the comments, they should do so in a time manner. I posted a question on March 8th, almost a week ago and it still says “Your comment is awaiting moderation.” and I am the only one who can see my question.

I have a free site for a community of net-friends, (ala spymac but on a smaller scale), Yeah, it takes a lot of work and there’s a mess of other things I do besides but even with revamps of content engines and intergrating new features I’m able to keep the existing features up and running.
If anything should I do a re-write of the entire thing I’d leave the pre-existing and semi functional site online to at least allow people access to the existing content. That’s just my operational philosophy, like Cruciarius said. It might not be the best of all worlds but it’s a simple thing to do while I perfect, (like anything ever is), the next big thing.

So this site was taken over in Novemeber of 2006.. ok, there’s a slew of old and patched code and it’s mostly disfunctional.. it’s understandable that there’s going to be a delay getting the older content extracted and made presentable.

A few months go by.. and people are waiting patiently, though they’re hoping for some progress reports just so they know they’ve got a reason to hope.. it’s not that the owners and dev owe them anything.. it’s just a courtesy. And we do get some news throughout November, 2006.
In mid December one update was posted and from what was said it looked like there was a good plan in place and things were happening, (hear the people rejoice!).
January 8th, 2007 rolls in and we get some news that might make anyone with experience in dev cycles get chills up and down their back: there’s been a total change of plan, the method they were going with wasn’t doing the job that they wanted it to, (I can understand that, I quite often may test 20 or more ‘tools’ before finding one that does what I need it to do in the manner that I want it to.. I’m in that process even as I write this).
Ok, people are busy, working hard, they’ve got other projects.. February rolls by.. no news.. March rolls in.. it’s two months after the news that they’ve gone back to square one.. and there’s no news.

My past experience with sites that went through similar convulsions is that they do not come back.. they wither away. The dev team tires of trying to port the old site to the new format or the design keeps metamorphosing and meanwhile nothing is launched.

So why do we care? We don’t own the site, right? It was just a place we all came to because people like us posted cool stuff and ideas.. why should we get worked up if it dies? We just watched it grow, got to ‘virtually’ know the people behind the place.. There are plenty of other people on the planet.. plenty of other websites, right?

I’m not looking for answers to those questions, I have my own already, that’s why I post things like this.. and why I keep coming by.. hoping against hope that this sight will be an exception.

while content, is a must, i came to resex, for the pleasant community, which most all other mac sites, seem to lack. a lot seem to be rude and stuck up, but not the users here at resex… not the regulars anyway. that’s why i’d be upset if resex died off completely.

I’m still hoping for an April Fool’s Day comeback. As a tip o the hat to the old ResEx. It would be funny it they posted a new homepage stating that they have changed to a Windows community.
However, I don’t think that anything is going to happen.

Hey Cruc–that’s a really good point. Although I have to admit I was much more into the content and stopping by just about every day to see what kind of cool stuff was here. That being said, I was always impressed at how users here were pretty cordial and fair to eachother. In fact, the only time I remember people getting really combative was during the aforementioned “rebuilding” period and that horrible logo contest. lol

We may not care what the site looks like or how operational it is, but advertisers do. The bandwidth bill for all that content adds up. That money is better spend getting the site redone in a thorough and maintainable way.

@ Doug – yeah, that logo and forum design thing went way out of hand and i know i was one of those people who were getting upset about it. from now on, i think it would be best to have an actual poll, to see what the majority of the users think of any changes, before they take place. i never saw such a poll before, with the forum. it was just posts of logos, in a random thread and people just said which they liked more. what should have happened, is all the entries should have been sent to either the forum mods or site owner(s), for them to pick the best of the best. after that, they make a thread, with a poll, asking what the users think.
@ pbear – i believe a site cost is for server space, not per MB bandwidth used. though i’ve never had a site that i payed for space to have, so i could be wrong.

Yeah, I came in here every day when Mike Coyle was running a tight ship. His successor Scott C., aka Rampant 1, tried to do the right thing also. A great guy himself like MC is. People here were a civil bunch, even PMac between his tantrums now and then.

Yes, I agree that sometimes good things take time. However, we’re now approaching nearly 6 weeks without a peep or a post from anyone connected to the site (from what I can tell, Brian Wilson’s Jan 31 post above is out last “official”contact from behind the red curtain). Lack of even a smidge or a hint of acknowledgement that something is happening behind that curtain is disconcerting and worrisome – at least to me. I’m not interested in polls or requests for feedback. I just would like to have some indication on where things stand on the rebuild.

i’d prefer it if they had maybe a % progress bar of some kind, showing the % until completion and then just something like this, where we can communicate with each other, until the forums are up. honestly, i don’t care what portion of the site they are working on, as long as it’s being done and we get some form of progress shown to us.

Perhaps they’ve died and no one knows…anyone know these people and if they are actually working on it?

The whole situation with this website is so bogus. The current owners complained that the old owners didn’t so anything with the site, but at least the old owners kept the old content available and how long has this site been down? Over three months now?

There’s absolutely no reason why the current owners couldn’t do their “engine revamp” on a development mac somewhere and rolled it out when it was done. Unless there were overwhelming cost issues, taking the old content down was completely unnecessary and a bit irreponsible given the popularity of the site.

The new owners may make a pretty website, but they’re terrible project managers.

I guess the biggest thing for me is that they said “no we don’t want any help” yet there appears to be a lack of labor of some sort. It seems to me that even at only say an hour of work per day, we should a) be almost done, and b) have had some news of progress. But apparently they lack even the labor resources to do that, and are too proud or something to let one of many willing community members assist.

I’m generally inclined to be optimistic about things like this, but it’s now been well over 2 months, and with no word whatsoever, I’m getting a little worried.

Perhaps someone here could offer to buy the site from them and get it back up faster?

I dunno. It sounds like they’ve got a pretty good start. It seems a shame to have someone else start over, especially because NO ONE HERE probably has all the necessary time to do everything necessary to get the site back up.

What should really happen is for them to have some extra people help (on a volunteer or paid basis – up to the parties involved) with some of the more repetitive tasks of copying content over, so that process can get done more quickly, leaving them to deal with more important things like the actual CMS itself.

Just my thoughts.

Why in the heck didn’t the put the old website back up and then work on the new version behind the scenes, then switch when everything’s ready? That makes no sense.

I gotta agree with Ben Boldt, especially since the site is currently generating a negative income. Though I’m sure it costs less for the current incarnation of the site, it costs something, and with no ads that means no outside funding. Keeping the old site going would let the advertisers know that ResEx valued them, and would enable money to flow, if not in large amounts it’d at least be coming in.

Sure there would be lack of new content complaints, but we’re seeing that now, and complaints of lack of updates/progress, and lack of any content.

I’m an old, very very, old fan of ResEx. I use to submit stuff back in the late 90s. I just now got back onto MacOS after switching to Windoze in ’00 after the hardware conversions.

I’m saddened to hear about what happened but I sure hope things can get better. I mean, with OSX being Unix based, the possibilities are endless!

I look forward to seeing the reborn ResEx. Don’t suppose you all have a “keep us informed” newsletter or just something to email us when you have the site back up?

You know that does make sense. In order to have a clear legal break they had to remove all that could have been construed as ‘created’ by the last owner, or whatever. That would not include the content, since the vast majority (perhaps all) of the content was user created. However the ‘design’ of the site might have been his and not part of the deal when ‘new’ ownership took over. To be honest I don’t know if what I just said is on the mark; the last time I checked ResEx, before finding this situation, was well before the last not so good owner. Must have been 03 or 04.

I have a site too, but it hasn’t been updated in ages. Not because I haven’t gotten around to it, but because I ran out of space, with the host I have.

This is just like ResEx of past. It hasn’t been ResEx since Coyle left. Everytime it gets taken up, they just put it back down. It’s an indefinite cycle, as technology progresses a new group will take it up promising big things and then never finish it, just like Scott before this and whoever comes after this.

I say, give the content to the people. Just put it up, work on the design and everything else after you just simply provide all the content. It’s not YOUR content, it’s ours, and we want it!

Best way to kill a site…. offer amazing improvements, take away what was already there, and then let the site rot.

If there was work being done on the site, it wouldn’t take more than a couple minutes for one of those working on it to make a comment. This post is taking me about that much time. It would convince people that this site isn’t simply being left out to dry. Even the diehards are going to get fed up eventually. If you don’t have steak, at least throw the dog some scraps to hold it over.

Yeah, I develop and maintain a site, just click my name, I just had some server probs, so I had to redo the whole thing, then everything became a mess, so I decided to create a whole new look for the site. That’s why it looks so messed up right now.

I’ve been trying to stay positive with this site. But I’m starting to have doubts. I bet the site will be back up and running the day Apple goes back to IBM/Freescale for their main chip of choice…

“The back-end is mostly ready, however, now we’re missing a design (actually, the designer that we’ve collaborated with suddenly went MIA). Hopefully, if all works well, ResEx will go live sooner or later…And my personal preference is “sooner” as I miss it too ”

Whether they’re working on it or not, a 3 month delay with no news period is never a good sign. Even if it’s nothing more than monthly posts saying “Nothing new to report, but we’re not dead yet!” — that’s better than this nothing.

Thanks, Ben, glad you got a reply. Even so, I think it would be much more helpful – to many of us, myself included – to hear something like “we sure hope it’s going to be going live sometime within X days/months/etc” or perhaps even a tidbit of “here’s what we’re being challenged with and the delay is X” directly from an “official” source who is connected, in any way really, to this site.
Which also begs the question – are the people who are supposed to be working on this site spending SO much time doing other things, or so fixated on making the site ready to go, that they can’t possibly find the 5 minutes (or even less) that it would take to post some new topic, or even just a reply on this thread?
Seems to me at this point that those of us who have posted more than a few times are indeed the unsuspecting guinea pigs in some grand sociological experiment, since at least one of the people who was seemingly connected to this site after this “redux” was announced was also the impetus behind another site that has now apparently gone “dark” and is still incomplete in some people’s eyes- MacHeist.com…can’t help but wonder if the “designer” talked about in Ben’s email was Phil Ryu… where HAS he gone off to? Even his blog hasn’t been updated since November 2006… hmmmmmmm…
It also makes me wonder that if anyone who is working on ResEx even tries to talk about ResEx will mysteriously disappear and get a back alley beat down a’ la that movie about some club you’re not supposed to talk about… maybe that’s what happened to Brian Wilson shortly after January 31?

A long-winded, personal story that is particularly appropos to the task the folks at Unsanity have been dealing with – and which ends with news for those of you hungry for new content:

Some of you may already know that roughly 4 years ago I was forced to take a sabbatical from my Space Planning, CAD and Construction Services business (ELLIS JAY Inc.) while I went through chemotherapy and that I’ve been confined to bed ever since. Whereas I used to dream of having the time to sleep for just a few more minutes, the thrill of being able to do that as a result of no business committments grew old very fast and it didn’t take long to realize that even with 400+ TV stations, most of what’s on is total crap. So my husband got me a laptop and an over-the-bed hospital table so I could stay connected with my friends, family, former clients and colleagues and I also found myself returning to a pasttime I had enjoyed years ago when Macs were still monochrome and the OS versions ran from 3 to 8: namely creating icons and other gui enhancements purely for my own amusement. It took only a few months for me to realize I had already built up a library of more than 10,000 icons for OSX. In hindsight, the early ones really stunk but IMHO, I believe they began to stink less and less as I went on.

Over the last 20 years I’ve been blessed by the opportunity to experience the vast kindness and generosity of complete strangers over the interest who willingly shared their knowledge with me on a variety of issues and skills. So when I got to the point that I thought other’s might enjoy my creations, I decided to start posting them to sites like ResEx and MacMonkies and offer them for free as a way of “paying forward” for the unrestrained help others had shown to me.

Simultaneously with all this, I also decided it’d be a great idea to have my own website. So I looked into quite a number of hosting services and eventually settled on going with the (then) brand new dotMac service as well as Yahoo Small Business. While I really cannot complain about either of those since they delivered exactly what they promised, I really hated the aesthetic and functional limitations of being tied down to their pre-defined templates. So I got the bright idea of creating my own site from scratch, using all of my own graphics and writing all of the code with a simple plain-text editor. I confined myself to those not because I was too cheap to buy Dreamweaver or something similar but out of the enjoyment of a challenge and the idiotic habit of stubbornly refusing to quit, even when I know darn well that no one else really gives a sh#t what the site looks like and whether or not I created it myself, much less whether I created it “the hard way”.

So I embarked down a path that was riddled with pot-holes and hurdles, not only because of the self-imposed “bread and water” range of tools and the side-effects of the chemo which have affected my ability to concentrate as intensely as I used to, but primarily because I began with absolutely ZERO knowledge, training or experience with any of the multitude of programming languages I suddenly realized I was going to have to learn. Oh yeah. I also was dealing with having only a dial-up connection for the first couple of years. Eventually, I created close to a hundred different versions of my intended website – some of which were entirely dysfunctional but most of them, IMHO, looked great and even appeared to work exactly as intended when tested from my desktop, but all of which completely fell apart the minute I tried to post them to the web and access them remotely with different browsers and/or platforms. I imagine that any tech-savvy 10 year old could look at my code and immediately identify the problem(s) but I don’t know any 10 year olds and am well past that age myself.

I haven’t given up yet as one day I still hope to work out all the bugs and get a completely original site online. But in the meantime, my pragmatic side finally got the best of me – AND I came across a host for a unique new kind of blog service (called a “scrapblog”) that I began experimenting with a few months ago while they were still in beta and managed to create something closer to what I originally had in mind that the other services were unsuited for. Since the scrapblog service (atleast currently) does not provide the means for visitors to download files to their own desktop, I have created a scrapblog which actually serves as a front-end to my dotMac website which hosts the files I’ve made available for free downloads.

I have loaded up a new set of icons today and plan to load more over the next several days. The host system itself requires your browser have the latest version of the Adobe Flash Player plug-in (accessible for free from a wide variety of sites including Adobe itself). The scrapblog service is within days (supposedly) of launching their first non-beta version but I believe that the public should be able to access the latest version of my blog (vs. an archived version from a previous beta) through it’s present direct address. So if you’re desperately in need of a fix for your gui-jones, check out the link to my website and let me know what you think. Heard from a VERY reliable source that ResEx is dead. Though an e mail from US has stirred up some hope, the obtained info, lack of public communication, and the gut would indicate the boat is no longer afloat.

Besides, if this is a way to generate anticipation, the wait has moved the majority of fans off to sea.

I suppose we could go back and log some new comments in the 5 other “threads” on this site, too, just for grins and giggles. This top thread is but the most convenient…

I’m on cable. When we had a small amount of comments, it would load fast, but the more comments added, it’s taking longer to load. If I go and check the older update post comments, they load much faster than this one.

Here’s the formula by Ben Boldt:
The delay between front page updates is increasing pretty closely to y=x^2. 1 day, 2 days, 4 days, 8 days, etc. Each delay is about twice the previous. We’re due for another post next month. Then in July. Then March 2008.

As y (time) approaches infinity, x (delay) also approaches infinity (rather than approaching some arbitrary number.) This suggests that after an infinite amount of time, the delay will no longer apply and therefore ResExcellence will be back up and running.

ResEx is/was a community-driven site. Without us uploading stuff and solving people’s problems on forums, it would be empty… it needs to come back.

I think more to the point a ResEx type place is something that is actually quite simple to get running there are tons of CMS packages out there that do everything that the old ResEx did and more available under the GPL license, (Personally I think e107.org’s is the easiest to configure and it has tons of extensions aka plugins to make it even more flexible).

The key is bandwidth and having people willing to take the time to do the site maintenance.

If someone were to ‘donate’ a domain and a place to host the site the site could be operational in under a day. Refinements to the GUI could follow on if so desired.

So far as that goes there are quite a few ‘themes’ already available for the interface so quite probably a new look could be had on nearly a monthly basis.

e107 allows for granular access levels so upload access could be granted quite easliy to whatever member class you like… and the support for it is very dynamic.

And beyond all that it’s easily modified if you have some understandling of php and css.. for the plugins you’d need to know something about MySQL.

Somehow I think we probably have quite a few people in this crowd that can handle things like that.

One note: make it a multi admin site so that if somone gets sick, bored or moves to Antarctica the site won’t fall into the same trap as this one did.

HURRY! We’ve been waiting since the beginning of the year and it’s already MAY!

@datguy: your idea for starting a new community-driven customization site is great. Just one thing, however– there’s already a site like that.

I don’t want to sound like show-off, but my Mac GUI site at http://www.macgui.com is already such a site with a Community and Downloads system that allows members to upload and contribute their own work and get feedback on it.

I though I’d make it known, so please consider it.

if that matter, i can offer unlimited bandwidth on my father’s server (but in a subdirectory, not in using a subdomain), which has also mysql and, obviously, php. i’m using e107 on one of my sites and i like it.

Hey dog–I’m going to check out your site a little more thoroughly–it looks pretty cool! I used to submit desktops, etc. to ResEx, and I notice you have very similar categories. One of my favorite sections of ResEx was the “snapshot” section–where you got to peek at other people’s setups. I know, it’s a little cheesy, but hey–it was fun

(The only other site I used to visit, BTW, was pixelgirl — not quite the same as ResEx, but fairly cool nonetheless…)

Just seems like this has gone the way of other Ryu and gang projects. A lot of smoke and mirrors but absolutely no substance. SnakeOil Salesmen at their prime! Sad to see ResEx get taken over by this lot.

The only other mac forums, besides ResEx, that I ever visited are MacNN and MacThemes. Neither one has a section for users to upload though. Well… MacThemes does have a forum just for posting your new things (desktop pictures, icons, themes, etc), but no official page with it all on it.

I tried MacGUI and… I doubt I’d ever go back to it.

Macthemes is being updated right now, fu*k ResExcellence. For now at least.

Well, I’ll kick in my assistance in maintaining a site if a collaborative effort is decided on.

I think it should cover a wider field of mac interests than just GUI efforts though, perhaps something that spans the idea of macosxhints.com and gui sites.

After all that what the old ReEx really was about, system hacks, the gui and howto’s. Of course that’s just my opinion.

It’s up to everyone to make this work. Perhaps expanding MacGUI to cover those areas would work, I can’t speak to that since it’s Dog Cow’s place and he’d have to be open to the idea.

But I’ll reiterate one key point: the site can’t be ‘owned’ by anyone person regardless of who holds the domain registry.

If you look back at what has always been the demise of any of the great mac sites it has either been that they owner got tired or bored of maintaining the place or it got too expensive for them to support it.

The first part can be allayed by having more than one hand helping keep the site operating and ‘approving content’ ie making sure submssion reach the end users.

As for how to cover the costs.. hell I’ve yet to figure out that from my side people have to want to help cover the costs and they’ll only do that if they think they’re getting the better part of the bargain from what I’ve seen. So far I just do what I do and if anyone wants to through money at me.. well who am I to complain?

The bottom line I think is that we’ve all hung on here hoping a Phoenix would arise from the ashes of the old site and meanwhile there are tons of people dying to contribute their work and ideas who get more and more dispondent. Maybe ResEx will return.. it *could* happen and I wish the new owners of the domain well.

But in the meantime I know for a fact that if you have juicy peaches and they smell great people will still stop at your road side stand even if you don’t have a neon sign and a custom logo advertising them.

So let’s do something!

I have over a year’s experience with PHP programming and I can make Mac GUI do whatever I want it to do, or what anyone else wants it to do.
In fact, I’m planning with two other staff members for a pretty revolutionary over-haul that I’m sure will benefit the entire Mac community and allow them to easily publish and maintain their own content.
In summary, Mac GUI is 3 years old, has me along with two others helping right now, and continues to grow both community-wise and feature-wise.

macthemes has gone to a “2.0 is soon” page for both their main and forum pages. So I imagine we’ll see something on that front soon, one would hope anyway.

Wow Dog Cow I’ve never seen your site before. That’s pretty cool. If you want you can feel free to add my old Mac OS 8/9 themes to your site. Even hot-link the files if you want. You have a few of them but not all of them. I’m not sure how legal the AquaMaX theme is, but you should at least put Doohickey on your site. That’s one of the coolest themes ever made!

@Doug: yes, because every member gets a web site at yourname.macgui.com with 200 MB of web space, FTP, and no ads. So if you can use FTP, then you’ll find Mac GUI easy to use!

@BuriedCaesar – It’s a funny thing about uploading creations to share on the web as compared to designing something for a client. Whereas I can tell how many times my icons have been downloaded, I’ve got no idea how many folks actually found them useful or if they didn’t like something (and why) or if they want to see more of a particular style and less of another or an icon for a particular function. So it really is nice getting your feedback. And I’m glad you liked Merlot.

Oi! if anyone connected to this site happens to be reading this: The fact that we’re still posting here should tell you we’d be VERY interested in seeing a new site emerge…. barring that some NEWS on where you’re at in the dev cycle would be an indication that there’s some reason to keep checking back.

I’d like to point out that I’ve seen magnificent sites go from planning to implementation with all sorts of bells and whistles in less than a 2 month span. If it’s integrating the old content into the new site.. who the hell even remembers what was in there any more.. just open the doors and let the barbarian horde in.. again.

Perhaps they should go to the ‘internet archive,’ find the old version from 3-4 years ago, and just brush off the mothballs. I actually went over there to look at it and got all teary-eyed…

Why does everyone else get to post here without moderation? This sucks. I have tried to say good things in my posts and not one of them has been posted. Maybe it is time for someone to just build another site.

I would have to agree, just put the old one up. Or better yet, instead of not posting for 5 months just make a post with bare minimum of saying “We are still working on this”. That would put a lot of people at ease. You wouldnt even have to say anything else.

The only problem with that is you don’t get the resexcellence.com domain name. Maybe we could pull out the old archive and call it ClassicResExcellence.com or something and, like you said, clean it up a little and branch off from there.

I’ll do the whole thing except pay for a domain name. I will spend time but I will not spend money. If somebody finds a way to pay for a domain name or one that pays for itself, I’ll resurrect ResEx from the past and get it running myself.

I don’t know if all the files are in the archive, so that could prove to be a problem. I bet there is someone who has a complete archive somewhere, though. I bet PeterMac has a pretty good library of old ResEx stuff if I can track him down.

If somebody supplies the domain, I’ll supply all the old ResExcellence goodness.

We will have something by the time one year of downtime lapses – one way or another.

Should this version or ResExcellence eventually come back some day, the two sites could work together. ClassicResExcellence could specialize in pre-Mac OS X and regular ResExcellence could specialize in post-Mac OS X.

I think this could really work out well. Who else thinks it’s a good idea to do this? I’ll get started bringing back ResEx on some free subdomain somewhere so we at least have progress reports here. But first I need some people to tell me if they think this is a good idea or not.

The ResExcellence name is worth absolutely nothing anymore… it’s been dead and gone too long, and really doesn’t even reflect the content anymore. ResEdit is a dead application that only runs on a dead OS that virtually nobody uses anymore.

I have to agree with datguy when he suggests that the old content be left in mothballs and move on. Old desktop pics are probably mostly of 1024×768 or marginally larger – not fitting the standard larger sizes anymore. The icons were of little creativity and again, mostly for OS9. The hacks for OSX were few and far between even when the site was live.

In other words, the Mac-using public moved-on a long time ago. So should this site. If MacThemes had a “user-submission” method to get screenshots onto the main part of the site rather than in the forums, I doubt this site could come up with a reason for existence.

Wow… I was just kidding about that, guys. lol… (Although the version in the archive WAS devoted Mac OSX, NOT 9, J.)

I do agree with the dektop comment tho… most of the ones I submitted were smaller than I’d use now! lol

I might take on bringing back a pre-OS X version of ResExcellence. Felixrad: If things start looking good, maybe we can look into putting it on a domain.

I am mostly interested in ResExcellence as a pre-OS X site, but as things move along, maybe we can build OS X stuff into it too.

I’ll work on this a little and show you what I come up with. I think a lot of the old content (except the desktop pictures) is good stuff worthy of coming back.

Hey, great initiative, Ben… although I have to confess: I (and probably many other users) really came to love and enjoy ResExcellence.com after the advent Mac OSX (post 2001). Don’t get me wrong, I’ve LOVED the Mac OS since way back in the 80′s, but making a “pre-OSX” site really doesn’t do anything to alleviate the current situation, since ResExcellence wasn’t devoted to pre-OSX stuff… just my opinion, please don’t take offense! (On the flip side, I’m still interested to see what ideas you have)

PS: regardless of my opinion, I’d like to reiterate that it’s great to see someone making some effort in the face of all this nontent!

What we need is a backup. Then we can bring it back online almost immediately. Otherwise it will take me FOREVER to reconstruct it. I can’t remember the names of the previous owners anymore, but if someone can track down a backup, we can work together and get it running in no time.

Here’s an idea…why not just change the name of this cadaver site to “Resurrect.com” and start over again with reliable web masters and/or coders tha really want to be a contributing part of this endeavor. That way the people that are doing absolutely nothing to this site can go forever about their business and never have to worry about making this something that it will obviously never be again, at least as we used to know it…..

Just a thought and at the same time keep all parties that be in a respectable situation to not have to apologize for what was never delivered or promised.

I think we should be happy with the 1024 x 768 sizes. It seems to be the most common screen resolution. I understand how difficult it must be for people with larger screens though, to find a nice desktop picture. Still, we should be happy. In the windows world, they still seem to be set on only doing 800 x 600 sizes and blow them up, for larger screens. Personally, I’d never do such a thing, but I guess they can’t see the horrible pixelation that causes.

I visited Michael Coyle’s new site and it’s basically what Resexcellence was 5 years ago–albeit very new and with much less users. lol… I honestly don’t care if the site is “pretty” or not, since ResEx was never pretty: it was efficient, clean and had lots of fun content (Coyle even has the “desktop snapshot” area up).
Anyhow, I just registered over there, so let’s hope it takes off!

Personally I was/am hoping for ‘something’ even approximately the old site’s level of function at this point.
As I said waaaaaay back.. an opensource CMS package could have had them up and running in less than a day and they could have tweaked the thing as they went or worked on the mach II version while that was in place.. this is just absurd.

Or sheer stubborness.. the equivalent of ‘my way or the highway’. And lastly perhaps like the last bunch the few people involved here now simply can’t reach a consensus.

Either way, their reputations suffer the same way as that last teams did.

@jh – careful making accusations like that in these parts. I didn’t trade away anything. I was a bystander – a frequent visitor who enjoyed the tutorials, took advantage of some of the free advice and tips and occasionally participated in the polls.

If you’ll check around the ‘net, you’ll probably find pretty easily that Bryan and Chris certainly didn’t exactly help themselves very much as they tried to make “improvements” to this site when they had it, particularly with regard to their attitude and public response to some of the criticisms they were receiving, many of which were valid and constructive, and just as many of which were grandstanding blowhards with an agenda.

If the new site owners are looking for a way to generate income (they clearly aren’t right now) – they’ll most likely have to get it from other people who are unaware of the history of ResEx – but I’m betting they’ve already discovered that any method they try is not going to be too lucrative, given the reputation that this site has gained – both positive and negative – over the years. There are those out there who won’t let anyone forget neither the glory nor ignominy of ResEx’s past (and whether you choose to take that positively or negatively is up to you).

Michael Coyle appears to have reincarnated many of the generic elements of ResEx that I enjoyed immensely (current news, a fun poll or two, and uploads of desktop caps). The “new ResEx” had better be worth the wait. But sadly, I fear, it will not. It may be soon to enter the perpetual limbo that has befallen other sites – still there but not really “there.”

I am not saying Bryan and Chris are “perfect”.. but that the urge to oust them was a witch hunt at best.. and that that same “urge” seems not to apply to people who do flashy little gimmicky marketing games in the Mac Community.

Where’s the outrage here? While Bryan and Chris did not “endear” themselves to the community… they at least were trying to go in the right direction of creating a dynamically updatable site.

That’s as opposed to what the current owners have done.. namely, pop up a blog with crappy colors and commonly found clip art, and try to convince everyone that it’s going to be “oh so great, just you wait.”

I have to go with ceasar on this one. I really stood by the new guys as much as I could–even when others KILLED them day after day. But even I got tired of that horrendous wiki format (my opinion), the lack of updates and the dreadful logo contest (and its subsequent fallout). Their childish and unprofessional attitude at the end was the last straw for me. “Witch hunt” implies that my disdain was unfounded, but I really had legitimately grown tired of them!

That being said, make no mistake about it: I hate what the CURRENT ownership has done here even MORE, so don’t worry. I think we’re all “outraged,” it’s just that it’s been so long that we’re a little numb. In addition, my outrage has lessened thanks to Michale Coyel’s new site, which is a modest effort that could grow into something fun for all of us again.

Well half a year and no updates…apparently Mr. Wilson has decided not to be involved
with Resex anymore. The no update thing is the most disturbing. I hope he’s well. I hope nothing bad has happened to him. I’m not gonna wish him ill will because a web site isn’t up and running. I think it’s time to call it a day on Resex. Hope I’m wrong. Cheers.

Could someone who runs this site at least give us an update like “Hey, I got bored and stopped working on it” or “Hey, we had a huge glitch in our new engine and its taking forever to hammer out” or “We quit!” Just give us something. Telling people you are going to do something and then ignoring them for five months doesn’t exactly build goodwill amongst an obviously anxious and loyal base.

anyone know if Shapeshifter is being worked on at all. There are rendering issues with the new Adobe CS3 apps. Haven’t seen a SS update since version 2.4 came out.

At this point, any attempt at communication from the owners short of a site-wide launch would most undoubtedly be met with either cries of derision or elation. And that’s a guarantee. They know it, too. Don’t believe for a second that one of them doesn’t check this forum regularly to see the ebb and flow of comments.

Another odd thing about this situation is that somebody, somewhere has paid or is paying for the hosting and domain name, otherwise I would imagine this page would be down. Maybe they are just paid up for a year or something?

I do believe this will be the fossilized web page since the beginning of page one. What really hurts is how all of us come here expecting to find some semblance of change but we are subject to the same black pages with contrasting text to make us feel that something may be transpiring……..very, very sad and the artist / coders that are responsible are certainly not doing one iota of favors to their resumes (they may not even care as far as I’m concerned), ……I am tired…I could go on forever. Very, very sad.

Maybe instead of the joke res ex booth next to them at the next MacWorld we should organize a protest in front of their booth, denying access to it and chanting “Bring back ResEx” Others have made the observation that Unsanity only seems to care about profit, thus the lack of dev on this site. So lets make NOT developing this site cost them more. Yes, it seems a bit extreme, but how many months has it been now? It’s about 18 days until 6 months of NOTHING from them. No new content, no site, no updates here or even on their own site. Now yes we get this for free, and we’re all grateful for it, but getting this page as it is for free? Thanks I’ll pass if it comes to that. The old resex is there, it worked, it wasn’t perfect or pretty but it WORKED. Give us a functioning site or pass control back to the users. No site can take ResEx’s place. ResEx not only had a great source of OS information, icons, desktop pictures, etc, but it also had the best Mac community I’ve ever seen. Sadly, I’ve yet to find another Mac community that even comes close to what ResEx is losing (or already lost).

is it just me, or has the ENTIRE self-described (well, sorta) “Delicious Generation” gone dead silent? The MacHeist crew, Unsanity, Inventive.us, Discoapp, Phillryu.com, MyDreamApp (seriously, how long does it take to code a cookbook app?), and of course, they’re hand in ResExcellence. I’ve been kinda hoping they’re biding their time with the release of Leopard, but truly, the radar has been dark on this crew for what feels like a long time. Could they be spread too thin? Ben, I’ve tried emailing Unsanity, no response yet, and its been almost 2 weeks. I’ve also tried talking to Phill Ryu, and no response from him either.

It seems likely at this point that any email sent containing certain words, particularly related to ResEx, get treated as spam and are summarily deleted without being read by the owners.

Now that’s a pessimistic view if ever I saw one Caesar. Can’t help but agree at this point though.

I have migrated to interfacelift.com for desktops and wall paper…it’s ok…maybe someone should send an email that doesn’t talk directly about resex, but rather has stuff like R…E…S…E…X… so that a spam filter looking for resex might miss it…… oh well…this is sad.

First Time Posting here. Long time user of this site. Remember back in 99 or 2000 Logicware (a developing company that ported PC games to the Mac) went out of business and they put a tombstone on the homepage and thanked everybody for their support. I think this site deserves a proper burial.

Nope no legal action we can take against unsanity for failing to do something great with a website they are paying for, in hosting at the least. You could boycott them, and spread the word. I’m sure you’ll find people willing to join the cause, it’s hard enough to get folks to use their haxies for fear of losing system performance anyway, so giving them a reason to not use it aside from that is likely to be like taking candy from a baby.

I really think they’re working on something great behind the scenes and don’t want to tell us. And I have a solid gold reason for thinking this.

It might have helped a little with your second conclusion, though admittedly, not much…the site most definitely appears to be in the firm hands of “someone” at Unsanity, and (surprise, surprise) Brian Wilson is listed as the contact of record for both administrative and technical issues. HOWEVER, when you visit the current Unsanity.com website and look at their address and phone number info, it’s listed in Phoenix, AZ, not in St. George, Utah, as indicated on the Whois. Hmmmmmm….

Would be interesting to just give ‘em a cold call at any of these numbers and ask to speak to any member of the “Resexcellence Design Team” and see how quickly they hang up, or maybe connect you!

Yeah, the article was a bit of a let-down at the end, really. I had no idea what was going to happen with the article and my research. It was like following a path that is only illuminated a few footsteps ahead of you. I checked the WHOIS _after_ I wrote the article, so I didn’t get a chance to work that in with the other ‘clues’ and discoveries.
But I think the final conclusion is shockingly true: We don’t know **** about what’s going on.

The best thing that can happen now is someone takes up the challenge to create a whole new ResExcellence. There are already many sites that have a great start, but all of the special content that was unique to ResEx needs to begin to be compiled and organized on something new. To keep holding out hope for this site only holds you back from creating an even better one.

@Dog Cow: A response to the comments you made in regards to my post. Firstly, at the time of me writing that I should have been clearer. Though Phill still owns MacThemes.net his role has been (and continues to be) very hands-off, so drawing a direct association between this site and MacThemes is a little to much, albiet understandable. Phill does indeed have a role in both sites, however, saying they are run by the same person is stretching it a bit. Now, you might not believe me now or may haver never believed me, but I can assure myself with a great level of certainty that I have an idea of what I am talking about/ have been talking about.

I respect the persistence that all of you have. ResExcellence is what original got me into GUI customization and same goes for Phill. ResEx will return! When exactly? I’m not going to give you guys a timeframe because those tend to be broken. But I will say that this project is not dead, and there are people who really want to see the site restored.

If developement of this site is ongoing then it’s at a surprisingly glacial rate.

One can keep on saying that work is continuing, but as someone who started out developing websites pre HTML 1.0 and continues to work on sites using php/ajax/mysql and various other ‘languages’ used to implement funtions for sites I have a fairly good idea of what the timeline for a rolout of a site would be realistically.

Even of you implement all the possible bells and whistles one might want for a site a six month dev period is beyond any reasonable expectation.. unless every single step is being vetted through an argumentative commitee in which case this site will resurface never.

Of course if the developer is just learning how to program websites and has been dumped into PHP and MySQL and all the other fun languages being used these days to have a ‘Web 2.0′ site then perhaps a bit of delay is understandable. But if that were the case then saying that to the ‘community’ would be better than the information deficit it is operating under for the last 6 months.

I think there’d be a hell of a lot less carping if we knew that there was a good reason for the delay of a roll-out. And those are my 2¢’s

Are you connected – directly – in some way? Remember that Unsanity and Phill or whoever owns ResEx right now bought it out of their own pocket, are are attempting to rearchive all the content, as well as totally redesign the site, all in addition to their day jobs and social lives. The timeframe you seem to expect from them seems like one that could be accomplished easily, but only if you had dedicated coders, as well as people to rearchive everything. The people who are working on ResEx right now are 100% dedicated to bringing it back and making everyone happy, but do you really think your disdainful comments make them want to work as fast as they can to do it? Also, please consider that the people you’re berating the most can’t actually tell you anything at this point in time, for whatever reason.

ResEx has and will always be about the community, so how about instead of acting like you deserve 100% transparency on their part and a more reasonable, in your mind, of a timeframe, please just be grateful that Unsanity and all the other great people who own ResEx now are doing their best to bring it back.

I was always such a big fan of this website. It was always a daily stop. There were so many cool updates, blogs and gui stuff. I think my favorite was being able to see other peoples desktops, and see how other people use their computer. I learned about little day to day apps that were just so fun. I keep coming to this website everyday hoping there will be at least something new. there is my two-sense.

As much as I dislike the lack of news updates on the progress of this site, I’d never say that “this place sucks”. It’s still home to me, just empty. No other mac site can ever take ResEx’s place as the #1 mac site, in my opinion. Even if ResEx was to shut down completely, no other mac site out there has the community and friendly feeling that ResEx had.

I have removed you from my bookmarks even though I used to go to your site every day. Res-Ex was a wonderful resource for me and now it is just dead.

here comes 800…. I figured everyone would have given up posting by now. Its sad in a way, because it shows how devoted the ResEx community was to the site. I imagine that most of the more casual users are long gone by now. If they ever get this site back up I wonder if there will anybody left? If there is they will most likely be very angry about this whole situation. I just can’t believe that no one on this project has had the decency to post a “We give up… tough luck fellas” type message at least. If by some stretch of the imagination there is someone still working on the site a “sorry we have better things to do than work on this site at the moment, but we will get it done eventually” every couple of months or so (at minimum) would be nice, just so there was some kind of update to appease the loyal fans. At this point I am afraid they may have burned through all available good will left in the community.

i’m getting instant load times too… Perhaps it’s something software/browser based that’s causing the delay? Just my two cents

No way- I downloaded this page to my desktop back at 600 comments at it was over a meg.

It’s got to be a slow computer processor that can’t handle pages at a time without a slowdown. Hey, Cruciarius- have you told us what Mac you’ve got?

I have an iMac G4 800MHz 768 MB RAM. When I first got this mac, it felt much faster than it has been lately, with everything. I’ve already ran different utilities to try and clean it up, but still no luck getting that speed back. People have posted about this on the Apple forums, but haven’t gotten any replies that fix the issue, yet.

Hmm.. Software issues can indeed make pages load like molasses, but ‘No Way’ it is. lol The processor indeed might be the culprit. In any event, I’m with Caesar. To be honest, the fact that this page loads instantly after all these comments serves as the only bright spot in the ‘wonderful’ user experience these guys have provided here. lol

the site loads fast, it just takes a second or so for all the comments to load. But the graphics and a good chunk of the text loads instantly for me. I doubt my CPU has anything to do with it, unless you’re going to challenge a dual 3.0ghz MacPro with 4gb RAM. Oh and cable internet. Might be we’re just talking about the initial load vs full load times here.

@Dog… one of my favorite mac websites was MacWarehouse. lol… And now it’s been eaten by CDW. lol.

@Doug, yeah I know, but even the 800mhz G4 he has should be able to churn out this site pretty easy. I just wanted to make sure the cpu arguement was shut down . Also to just get more specs out there. Though I sort of doubt most people have the current quad core macpros. And if you needed one of them to load the site quickly… I think we’d have a lot of issues.

I miss Jack Miller’s “As The Apple Turns” – http://www.appleturns.com – which has been in permanent rerun status since Oct 2005 – some speculation about his whereabouts has popped up in recent months and the overall consensus is that he’s moved on, which, while a loss to the Mac community, is perfectly understandable given the near rabid efforts of some to actually try and track him down. (I’d try to hide, too, if that were the case…)

I hear ya, Merc. Not sure if I agreed about that processor idea. I keep wondering if it was some sort of software-based/browser deal that was just acting up on that machine. BTW, the new Safari Beta is supposedly quicker than ever–or so I hear.

I suddenly remembered the funniest part of MacWarehouse: That blonde on the cover who apparently was never promoted from the call center in 15 years.

I use Firefox. I used to use Safari, until I found out and also told that once launch, Safari won’t give back the system resources or RAM it uses until you restart the computer. Anyway, I grabbed a Firefox add-on that has a page load timer. According to the timer, it took 154.390 seconds to load this page. I know my iMac is a “little” old, but I see no reason why it’s processor should effect site load times. Most of all, with small simple sites, like ResEx.

well just to compare here is load time on my mac mini 1.66 ghz intel core duo, 1 gig of ram, using a very very extension overloaded firefox. not sure if that makes a difference but firefox on this puter takes forever to open compared to on my other machines and seems to load pages a bit slower here and there. it also likes to lock up and crash, but hey its my experiment with puter

Well, never had any problems with Safari on my iMac G5 2.0G/1.5 GB ram–especially the beta. (BTW, doing alot of Photoshop, Illustrator, Painter and Dreamweaver work and never had Safari steal my system resources–guess I’m just lucky. lol)

Strange. Today took ResEx about half the time to load. 56.480 seconds.

Now that I think of it, I think processor speed does effect page loads. When I use my brother’s eMac, which has around 1GB RAM and over 1GHz, the pages I usually load on my iMac, load a lot faster on his eMac. But I remember my iMac being so much faster than this. Silly question, but can processors become slower over time? lol

not technically but i’m sure in some sense they can, like an updated OS might be using a tad bit more resources to run some “behind the scenes” part of it. like 10.4 might use a bit less than 10.4.10 does.

Still less than ten seconds to load this page on my trusty 14″ G3 800Mhz/640RAM. Just a thought – if your available disk space is small, then virtual memory has to huff and puff to swap all that stuff in and out no matter how fast your machine is or how much physical RAM you have. And the log files tend to get pretty fat, too.

It takes 4.0s to load on my 15″ MBP 2.16Ghz (core 2 duo). I’m on 20Mbps cable

Good point, caesar–I had an issue with that on an older Mac. Free disk space is a priority of mine now
