You’ve got questions…

First a quick introduction – I’m Brian Wilson. Yup, I came up with and sing all those great songs from back in the day. Now that’s out of the way, let me review a little about the last few months of ResExcellence and what’s in store.

Phill and I began talking a few months back about the demise of ResExcellence and the possibility of doing something about it. Sparing you the details, we decided to team up and acquire it from the previous owner. Unsanity was the means of that acquisition, but I want to be clear right up front that the new ResExcellence is not going to be an Unsanity project, tailor exclusively for our products, or anything of the sort.

We envision ResExcellence to be a people driven project serving the needs of the mac GUI community and not the needs of any one company. We want this thing to be what you, the ResExcellence users, want it to be and what it deserves to be. Let me be clear also and say that though it should be community driven and supportive of any needs that exist, the new founders will maintain a controlled direction to avoid some of the pitfalls of the past.

So, over the past few months, we’ve worked through the acquisition, stuck a tiny little logo on the home page to assure you all was not lost, brainstormed some new ideas, got all the old content (yes, we have it all), and have begun work on the design and backend.

So… what’s next? Well, while we’re cranking away with the technical end of things, we’ve got time to answer questions. You have a specific question for us? Ask it in the comments. We’ll choose a batch to answer in our next post.

Will you give credit for those who posted content previously, with the same names/usernames? Also, for those who have had user names previous with ResExcellence, will we be able to keep those?

Oh yea,

Will we still have access to all the old submitted extras? ie: Icons, bezels, menulette replacements, etc?

November 3rd, 2006 @ 5:55 pm

Great to see ResExcellence making a come back, can’t wait to see it completely back up and running.

November 3rd, 2006 @ 8:53 pm

I am so glad that Resexcellence is back. This site has been around a long time and it changed the way I saw the Mac. I loved the community and the generous GUI artist that contributed to it. I was pretty sad when it changed hands and almost gave up on it. I know that now it is in good hands. The GUI community thanks you and I know that they will be very supportive in making this the great site it used to be when there was people behind it that care.

November 3rd, 2006 @ 10:03 pm

will the new resex require us to sign up for all new forums or will we continue to have our previous forum accounts, but maybe a new look to the forum? i’m hoping we keep our accounts. it would make it easier, on the users. though it also all depends on what forum software you’re going to be using.

November 4th, 2006 @ 11:42 am

Good to see you folks ironed out some of whatever difficulties you experienced.

November 4th, 2006 @ 12:14 pm

It will truly be nice to see this site back on the block and hopefully in the swing of things. I’ll believe it more when it actually happens but I think that is because ResEx has been in a dormant stage for a long, long time.
It was always one of the best!

FANtastic! The legacy of ResExcellence’s glorious past deserves this opportunity to clean off the recent tarnish. Sure, any one of us could have tried to replace it with a site of our own, but us never-say-die Mac folks are a sentimental bunch. Towards the community effort intent, if there’s anyway I can contribute, just ask. And Brian, just out of curiosity, on top of your considerable musical, production and writing talents, are you among us here as another hopeless Mac-Modder and/or graphic artist or will your role here be simply as an underwriter as a friend of the community? Either way, your creative and innovative reputation and pleasant personality will be a welcome plus to this site.

Oh, and Brian, you may consider that “out of the way” but your songs are still in my playlist, as for many other friends around ;)

Good Luck!

Hey folks,

Just focus on bringing the site back up and ensuring that all of the content & resources from times gone by are brought back online.

I wouldn’t worry about previous usernames / accounts. I think your time would be better spent working on your vision of the site and providing us the content & resources we all desire.

All of us are clamoring to seeing the resurrection of ResEx, but take your time and do it right. We all benefit when your time & efforts are directed to the benefit of the entire community.

Thanks for stepping up to the plate. Good Luck!

November 6th, 2006 @ 6:35 am

I agree with with OzarkMtn, please don’t waste time worrying about former user names & passwords. It takes all of 5 seconds for us to re-register, but the time you would have to spend bringing them all back from the grave just cuts into the time you could be spending bringing back the old content!

I hope we get some of the stuff back before the server crash back in ’04 or whenever it was. Is that possible?

Several questions.
When showing screen shots, will you be listing the applications shown?
Will non Apple applictions in the dock also be listed?
I don’t recall a way for donations to be made with the old site, will this be changed? People need to be reminded, alittle goes a long way for all the work being done.

I agree. Why couldn’t they have simply uploaded the original site instead of going for this “whole new look” thing? At least the original site was workable. They should at least sell their rights to ResExcellence to someone who will actually get the site running. This is bull.

Okay, if you get tired of the system voices that came with your Macbook Pro 2.4GHZer, is there a place where I can install new and better voices… maybe like Hal 9000′s voice or something? Isn’t that possible? I also wouldn’t mind maybe Heidi Klum’s voice and then I can rename my hard drive Heidi. At least I can dream, eh? Oh, but back to the system voices. Can I get more? I’d love that! Could have more to choose from, you know? Thanks!

Hello,

I have been trying to find all the downloadables as on the old website, nothing has happened by using the old link (www.resexcellence.com) so far, is this site dead, or not been worked on since the closing of the old site? It certainly was one of my favorites to visit, I still have it bookmarked, but I’m ready to give on it. Info on RECENT links to the good stuff would be priority interest to myself and of course, to the world.

Thank you,

Hi! I have a question that you guys just might be able to help me with. Here’s the story: I installed Parallels 3.0 on my Macbook Pro 2.4GHZ notebook. The install went fine… not that hard. Ahemmm.. I’m certified, but no one knows everything. Here it goes: I was told that the drivers for the SoundBlaster 16/32 that would allow me to hear sound was in the c:/program files/Parallels/Parallel Tools/Sound. Well, I went there, and I went into Device Manager, and I installed the drivers, but I still have a yellow exclamation mark in device manager even after rebooting. I hear nothing. The Windows I installed was Windows 98 SE, because all I want to use w/ this OS is: chat on this Livve.com with cam. I have a LIFETIME membership – have had it for years and years. Anyway, why won’t the drivers work, and why is there an exclamation point in Device manager? And, what about using my internal microphone in my Macbook Pro in the virtual setting? Can you help me? I’m desperate. Thank you!

You know, before you know it, it’ll be a year since their last posting or update. They can’t even tell us that things are stalled, or in progress? Thanks for getting everyone’s hopes up and then dashing them. You should have (and still should) simply reinstall the original site setup. At least it worked. No one cares that much about how the site looks. The point is to get access to the content. There was never anything bad about the original site or its layout.

September 12th, 2007 @ 7:59 pm

Comeon! Honestly, if you cant, won’t, or do not desire to do re-create this site than go of and sulk AFTER reinstating some kind of a site. You pulled off a site that was better than this in a savior-esque move, but now you have just killed the site. If you have some sort of a vendetta against resexcellence then got sulk like some emo kid, but please pass on thissite, or at least reinstate it. If you wont, then please aknowledge your visitors. They deserve more that you are giving them. Please at least respond to their posts.

September 27th, 2007 @ 3:39 pm

You all want an update?? Well, here it is.. This site is dead and will remain dead.. All of the thank you for this and thank you for that is ludicrous… Thanks for WHAT!!! They (who ever they are ) are just dangling a carrot in frot of you and laughing as they watch you chase your tails.. Have’nt you figured out that if they won’t even answer ONE question in over a year that they have NO intentions of EVER doing ANYTHING… Working on it MY B*TT!!! have you ACTUALLY seen anything at all from these guys other than this crappy Black screen with grey lettering which I would say is a slap in the face not something to thank them for… Plying ANY questions to these guys is a TOTAL waste of time.. Have any of you even got one answer to ANY personally ask question or is it the same old info that says nothing.. We’re doing this and These guys are working on that and we are implementing this so we can that.. WHAT A LOAD!!!… More than likely some PC b8ttheads that have got great delight in killing one more thing that we fouond to be precious and usefull for the MAC…If they are really going to do anything then what you must do is to QUIT WRITING ANYTHING AT ALL in this site so they can see that we a re tired of chasing our tails.. IF BY SOME SMALL CHANCE they are going to actually do something it will be then that they finally see JUST HOW TIRED this same old song and dance has gotten for us all.. If they are for real they will realise that they must SH*T or get off the pot as they have lost their fan base.. As long as you keep giving them this whimpering thank you’s for absolutely NOTHING at all, they will continue to give you JUST THAT.. NOTHING AT ALL!!! I am not a ccoffe drinker nor am I a hot head!! I am a realist.. get a clue guys.. Put the pressure on them and you just might get something out of it.. Keep playing thisa game and that aand this is all they will ever do… ARE YOU TIRED OF THIS GAME YET????!!!! If you are then just QUIT PLAYING it and MAKE them do something.. If at that point they do NOT then you will have your answer and see that saying thanks for taking it over is just a fantasy…SMOKE AND MIRRORS is all we have goten so far.. The stuff they write here is like what the government does.. They pass out a pre written set of things they want you to think and then don’t answer anything for fear you will actually see the LIES for what they are.. At this time I am asking for an embargo on any comments to this site… it doesn’t mean that you can’t check it out to see if there has been any progress!! It DOES mean that we are not going to feed into a lie just to boost their egos anymore.. Why pump them up with how wonderful they are when they have given you NO REAL evidence that what they say is just a lie.. They COULD put the OLD SITE back up and JUST REPLACE it with the new one, but hey, that would be giving you something and I don’t think that is their goal.. They could post the archives to at least access the old stuff but hey why do ANYTHING for you.. Your going to tell them how great they are without them actually having to do anything to warrant praise.. Do you get the picture guys.. NO MORE STROKES FOR LIES !!!

November 20th, 2007 @ 2:12 pm

Um, respectfully, I don’t remember “chasing my own tail.” I got “tired of the game” a long time ago and I am certainly not complimenting them… but I’ll continue to post comments just for fun. :)

I moved on to bigger and better sites long ago–Like Michael Coyle’s site (MichaelsMac dot com).

“Work is in progress. 12gig of content is being organized into a new structure. A design is being worked on. (I suck at that however)”

If this is true, could they not, after a year-and-a-half of nothing, at least offer an explanation as to why there was total silence on their end? I don’t believe them. Besides, the computing world has moved on. My Intel Mac won’t run Shapeshifter, and MacTheme has already posted a few examples of the future of theming. ResEx is too late for my needs at this point.
