I recently had to decide on which mouse I should buy for work. Sometimes my work involves illustration, accurate retouching, various Photoshop tasks, and lots of wireframe mockup tasks as well. So it made sense to buy a higher-end mouse that would allow me to change the DPI setting and provide me with precision at any speed.
I decided to go for the Logitech G500 ($45.42 instead of $70 on Amazon with free shipping) based on the positive reviews I read on Amazon. While it’s advertised as a ‘gaming’ mouse, you can of course use this mouse for much more than just gaming. Out of the box, it’s a light mouse and the plastic build construction doesn’t feel as solid as the mice that Apple make. However, this mouse does come with an adjustable weight cartridge, so that you can change how the mouse feels to use. Couple that with the adjustable DPI setting, and this really is a fully customizable mouse. The feel of the mouse is comfortable, and the shape is suited to most hands. I would personally rather use this than any Apple mouse, purely for the comfort levels.
It’s very accurate, and the buttons on the side and the scroll wheel give the user additional usage options. Although it’s not advertised as Mac compatible, this mouse works fine with the Mac – Logitech provide a download of their software that is compatible with Mac OS X. The software allows you to change the button functions and DPI settings. There are 10 programmable buttons in total: three thumb-buttons, two to adjust DPI, the two main ones, and of course the four-way clickable scroll wheel. The mouse comes with six weights of 1.7g and six of 4.5g in a metal case, allowing for up to 27 grams to be added.
The final mouse is that I’m able to use this mouse without a mousepad – it just works on the table surface at work. However, I don’t think it would work on glass surfaces. Overall, the G500 from Logitech is a very good product, and worth considering if you’re looking for a higher-end mouse.
