Modify FreePPP's Modem Speed Window
On my first Powerbook, I had a Global Village internal modem. One great feature of their software was a little throughput display in the menu bar.

When I traded up to a Powerbook 5300c with a PC card modem, I lost the menu bar display, but that was OK because FreePPP provided a display of the in/out throughput.
But you know, I've never liked the layout of FreePPP's Information window. I could never get it tucked down and out of the way on my monitor.
New layout. Note the bars are now at the top.

So this week, we're going to change the layout of the FreePPP Information window to one you can tuck down in the corner of your monitor and still see the throughput.
My current system is OS8 with FreePPP 2.6b7. Placing the throughput bars side by side seems to cause a display bug for me with Kaleidoscope 1.7. If you have the same problem, offsetting one of the bars by a single pixel solves the problem; or you could align the bars on top of each other into the upper corner.
The parameters for dialog boxes are stored in the DLOG resource. Starting on a copy of FreePPP, open it up with ResEdit and after finding the DLOG resource, double-click to open it.
In FreePPP 2.6, the window is stored in ID#300. If you are inclined to perform the hack on version 2.5 of FreePPP (with its single progress bar), the resource is ID# -4055.
Find ID#300 and open it.

The DLOG window shows you a miniature representation of your desktop and the dialog window to edit.
In ResEdit, double click on the mini FreePPP window to edit it.
Your top window should now look like the one above. You can resize the window to give yourself more room to work in. Do not delete any items. Do not add any items. It's very important the number if items remain the same. When rearranging items, do not have any overlap or items will be hidden.
Other than these precautions, feel free to rearrange things to suit your taste. When you're finished, close all windows and save your work, then launch the copy of FreePPP and see what it looks like. Before trashing the original copy, make sure you have put the modified one through its paces first. Dial in to your provider and make sure the progress bars and other displays work correctly.
