Change 0T/PPP Init Strings

I've used FreePPP for years to connect to the net, but with my upgrade to MacOS 8.1, I thought I'd give Open Transport/PPP a try.

The reason I had always put it off, was because the modem init string I used in FreePPP seemed to work better than the strings Apple provided in their modem files. I tried using their Modem Script Generator, but the results were hit or miss.

I needed a way to modify the init string, but leave everything else in the script the same.

This week, if you use 0T/PPP, I'll show you how to do it!

An 0T/PPP modem config file
You'll find your modem file in the System Folder->
Extensions->Modem Scripts.

Make a copy of the one that works with your modem and open it with ResEdit.

From the File menu, Get Info on the modem and jot down the file's Type and Creator codes.

Change the Type to TEXT and the Creator to ttxt. This allows you to open the file in SimpleText.

Close and Save the file.

Open the modified modem script in SimpleText.

As shown in the graphic below, find the section of the file that descibes the setup of the modem. I've highlighted the string in my file, but yours will certainly be different. Any text with a (!) in front of it is a comment. Feel free to add your own comments to remind you of what you were trying to accomplish with the new string.

The init string is the section of text I have highlighted above. The
\13 is a code for the return key, so don't change it!

After you have changed the string, save the document and quit SimpleText.

Here's the problem we have.

When you save the file in SimpleText, it adds its own resources.

To see this, and finish up your work, open the modified script in ResEdit.

Delete the styl resource from the modified file.

Next, Get Info and change the Type and Creator back to mlts and slnk.

Save the file and quit ResEdit. Your modified script is ready to be selected in the Modem control panel!
