Change the colors in Apple's CD Player.

They gave us six colors from which to choose, but that's never enough!

Thanks to this tip posted by Don Tipton in the Users Forum, you can now change the colors on the face of Apple's CD Player.

Open a copy of the Apple CD Audio Player in ResEdit. If you get a message that the file is "read only", just click "Yes".

Find the CLRS resources, and open them with a double-click.

There are two ID's.

Number one is for the "Face Plate" and two is for the various text and indicators. Open ID 1 with a double-click.

The six face place colors are here in RGB Hex. I've place red dividers between them to make it easier to see.

Dark Grey: 4444 4444 44444
Green : 3333 6666 6666
Blue: 0000 0000 7777
...and so on.

You can pick your color with Apple's built in HTML Color picker, just repeat the color values twice.

For example, we'll change the last color, Gold (orange) FF 99 00 to a Platinum Grey CC CC CC.

Be sure to repeat the color value twice.

You can also replace all the original colors, but in this example, we'll only do one.

Once you have changed the color, you can close ID 1.

Open ID 2 to change the indicator color.

The format is the same with the 6 colors in RGB Hex, with each color value repeated.

The last Indicator color is Red. We'll change it to a nice MacOS Blue with a Hex value of 33 66 CC.

After changing the color, you can close ID 2.

At his point, you could run the progrm and select the new colors from the menu, but they would have the wrong name and color icon, so let's be professional ResEditors and continue on!

Open up the cicn icon resources.

ID 455 is the last face plate color. Double-click on the icon and change the colors to match your choice from above.

ID 465 is the last indicator color. You can also edit it to match your indicator choice from above.

Now we need to change the color names in the MENU resources!

Open the MENU resources with a double-click.

Open ID#133 and change the last menu item from Gold to Platinum.

Open ID#134 and change the indicator color from Red to MacOS Blue.

Many other hackes would just bailout now and call it a day - but not us, we're ResExcellence editors and we take the extra step!

Find cicn resource ID's 328 through 400 (as shown). These are the indocators for a pushed player buttons. Originally, they're green.

I suggest you make them a nice shade of blue!

You can do the same with toggle arrows at ID's 139 and 140. Loose the Green and make them Blue.

And finally, Patrick Kelleher submitted this final step.

Open the WIND resource.

Open ID #128.

Select a new window style for the CD Player.

You can play around with these (with unpredictable results), but a good choice would be the second one over from the left, circled in red.

You're finished!

Save your work and quit ResEdit.

Launch the modified copy of the CD Player and use the menu's to select your new colors.
